In just a moment. But we begin with the weather and lisas here with a cool down this saturday. Yes, thats right. But, you know, its still going to be pretty nice. Were looking at the low clouds and fog all throughout the bay area due to a system off the coast. We go in closer and the fog has moved inland. And so we all are starting out pretty gray just like this in the city. The Golden Gate Bridge here, 61. It is 63 in oakland, 64 in mountain view, san jose is in the 60s. And view here from emeryville where numbers are in the upper 50s in the north bay fog not much of a problem but we have had a little bit of mist and drizzle and finally in santa cruz we have sun on the way. Its going to be afternoon sun. And so thats going to allow for less heating, a little breezy, good air quality, a few temperatures near 80 inland later on today. But clouds will linger at the shoreline. Stephanie. Lisa, thank you. Well, here at abc7, we are working to build a better bay area as a part of those efforts. We want to highlight the festivals and events, bringing the community together. Weve seen it with the bhangra and beats fest market and the carnival at Civic Center Plaza and now one in the sunset. Despite safety concerns, people are helping Small Businesses get back on their feet through these events and as abc7 News Reporter tim johns tells us, the night market and the sunset might be the biggest one yet. Food, shopping and music were all present in San Franciscos sunset district friday. For the first time ever, the neighborhood hosting an asian inspired night market. Night markets bring people together. They make streets safer. They give a boost to Small Businesses. Supervisor Joel Engardio is the man who brought the market to life. He says he got the idea after visiting similar night markets in taiwan on a normal friday night. The streets of the sunset can be pretty quiet, but as you can see, thanks to the new night market, they are very much alive. I love it. Ive never seen anything. I grew up here in the sunset and this is the first time ive ever seen a night market happen. So its really special. Paula mac says she thinks events like this are exactly what the city needs to combat its struggling image, not just for local residents, but also for Small Businesses, many of whom said the market is a Good Opportunity for them to expand their customer base. I saw a lot of promotion for it online, but i think this is maybe something that San Francisco is lacking right now after hosting a successful Dreamforce Convention earlier in the week, city Officials Say its important to also remember local neighborhoods. This is really the locals. This is people who live in the avenues of San Francisco, the various neighborhood groups and the businesses that the local community supports. And given the seeming success of this trial run, engardio says he hopes to bring the night market back for more. We want to have night markets every month in the sunset. So this is where were going to figure out what works, what doesnt. Give us your feedback, and were going to make them even better all next year in San Francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. In oakland now, three teenagers arrested for a shooting at Skyline High School are now charged in connection with the case that shooting happened on the campus in the Oakland Hills last week. Thankfully no one was hurt. Alameda County District attorney pamela price announced the charges in a recorded message friday. Many people are concerned that we are not doing enough to hold young people accountable. We should all also be concerned that we are not doing enough to deflect young people from criminal activity. Price says the gunfire at skyline appears to have been an isolated incident. She did not say what charges the teens are facing. Also in oakland is facing more criticism from the community after missing a deadline to apply for a state Crime Prevention grant. Governor newsom signed off on major funding this week. The money will go to 55 different cities across the state for efforts combating organized retail theft. San francisco, for example, will receive 17 million. Business owners are disappointed, though, after oakland was disqualified because it failed to submit its application by the deadline line. Chp says the city will likely still benefit from work in other bay area cities. We will be working together with all the allied agencies in the bay area and that will benefit the community of oakland, whether or not they were awarded or grant or not. We currently are doing organized retail crime efforts in the city of oakland and so that wont change. Oakland Officials Say there will be looking at other grants to fight retail crime. You can also expect Late Night Service from levis stadium if youre attending the ed sheeran concert tonight. Speaking of santa clara, boy is turning into the concert mecca of the bay area. Ed sheeran plays levis stadium tonight and if the show sells out, it means roughly 70,000 people will be in attendance. Now, thats more than taylor swift and beyonce. Abc7 news south bay reporter Dustin Dorsey has a look at what might be one of the biggest concerts yet. You know, we be. The sounds of summer in santa clara have featured great music, top artists and plenty of screaming fans. Take me out and take me home. This year, levis stadium has hosted two of the highest grossing tours of all time with taylor swift and beyonce. But this weekends ed sheeran mathematics tour may be the biggest one yet. Youve got something that is going to draw an even bigger crowd than those other ones, right . Were talking about massively more people heading for santa clara this weekend. Something about the same size of the super bowl. The buzz was felt in oakland friday where sheeran made his first of two bay area stops at the historic fox theater. Fans lined up hours in advance to see the british folk pop singer in an intimate setting. Its first come, first serve as far as seating. I want to be as close as i can in because i love him. I love him as an artist and i love him as a human being. Saturday, a much bigger crowd will be on hand. Taylor swift packed 58,000 swifties into levis. Beyonce totaled 50,000 in the beehive. Sheeran show is sold out as well. But Bay Area News Group music critic Jim Harrington says sheeran stage setup will help his show. Peak 70,000 fans with beyonce and taylor. You were looking at massive stage set ups that blocked a huge portion of the seats. On the other hand, youve got ed sheeran whos doing in the round , so you can absolutely sell 360. And that benefit not only means sheeran will outsell swift and beyonce, but he may break the levis concert attendance record set at the 2015 grateful dead concert with 76,000 fans and the all time crowd at levis for wrestlemania at 77,000. Records aside, 58,000 plus 50,000 plus 70,000 equals one. Incredible summer at levis stadium. And for south bay music fans, i think that all three of these these levis tours that were seeing through here this year. Beyonce, taylor and ed, i think those will probably end up as the top three tours of all time in santa clara. Dustin dawsey, abc7 news. Now that disco ball hat certainly caught my eye. It looks like a lot of fun. Well, speaking of the star, ed sheeran is looking for his next director and it could be you. He made the announcement on instagram saying he wants 14 directors for 14 different music videos from 14 countries. See the theme with 14 and he wants to pick them from his fans. So far, 74 of the deceased have been positively identified. The number of people missing is also down from 41 to 31. Lets take a peek outside now. Good morning, lisa. Hey there, stephanie. Good morning to you. It is 60 degrees in San Francisco and a live look outside. Lots of clouds and people just hanging out with the sea lions this morning. If you liked yesterday, youre probably going to like today. Very similar. Upper 60s here, partly cloudy, breezy winds. But what about the rest of the bay area . Well check in and detail that for you coming up. Lisa thank you. Still to come, the big National Headline this morning, thousands of Union Members on strike after failed talks with automakers. You guys are ready to rumble now, arent you . Union president sean fain holding a rally overnight urging ceos to make a deal. It boils down to one thing. Its corporate greed and its got to stop. Well, happening today, san leandro is kicking off its octoberfest season with a beer festival fitting right. The october festival event starts at noon and goes until 5 p. M. It takes place in downtown san leandro and people can enjoy a day full of fun activities, including games, drinks, food and a live beer garden with music. Each beer pour is 8. So if youre headed out to san leandro for that october beer fest weather certainly its going to be in good shape. Is that right, lisa . Yeah, that is its a little muggy out this morning. It has been the past couple of mornings with temperatures in the 60s. A lot of cloud cover here. We had some breezy winds earlier, but kind of quiet out there right now. Those winds are going to pick up and its all due to a system offshore that is sort of parked there for the next several days. Could even be that way into early next week. So its an area of low pressure, a rotation around that, bringing in some good air quality and a pretty tall marine layer. So we have been cloudy all morning long, a lot like yesterday, i think it was 12, 1 00 in some areas when the marine layer finally burned off. Heres a look at mount tam, where were in the upper 60s in the upper elevations right now, it is 60 in the city, 63 in oakland, 64 in san jose with low 60s, Half Moon Bay and a look at our emeryville camera where it is in the 60s with 57 santa rosa 60 by the delta 63 and concord. So a measure of the moisture in the atmosphere is the dew point and were looking at the upper 50s right now and looking at that scale. Certainly feeling a bit muggy outside. Its been that way the past couple of days and well continue to see the marine layer evaporate and get into a nice afternoon, although it will be on the breezy side, very similar conditions with the 60s on the way here at our beaches in the afternoon. So widespread low clouds, the mist and drizzle at the coast. You may need your wipers for the next several hours and then well get into those breezy winds once again over 25 miles an hour and then below average temperatures just by a few degrees today, tomorrow into monday and tuesday. Finally, this low should move on out by the end of the week, bringing maybe one model says warmer temperatures, another model says maybe even a little rain. So theres a look at the fog. It pulls back, say one, 2 00, and then look how quickly it moves back in. So once again, for your sunday waking up to gray skies and certainly no extremes out there, a few high clouds coming into play, maybe late in the afternoon, but really not much of a change out there with a lot of sunshine and temperatures around average. This is your sunday where you notice just 60s and 70s by about 4 00, we may see a few 80s. And then look what happens on monday day. Same situation into tuesday. Just showing you that the numbers are pretty flat and will remain fairly similar. But that is kind of nice, isnt it, for a quiet workweek ahead, looking at 70 today in oakland. It is the last full week of summer here as fall arrives friday night, 67 in the city looking at 75 in fremont. So a little breezy, a little cooler. But you may have noticed that already yesterday, the accuweather seven day forecast. So were continuing that pattern today. And then the look for your monday and tuesday 70s and 80s for most and then wednesday and thursday could get into a minor warming trend. But that would just put us around average nothing too extreme again but well be watching that friday forecast because now thats pushed out a little bit more into maybe sunday or monday. If we see a big pattern change. So well keep you updated on that. Just have to keep watching. Good to know. And for all those 70,000 expected attendees at the levi stadium tonight, jacket, weather it sounds like for this. Yeah but kind of on the muggy side as well. So mild. Good to know. All right. Thanks, lisa. Well, a reminder that you can watch all our newscasts live and on demand through the abc7 bay area connected tv app. Its available for apple tv, google tv, amazon fire tv and roku. Now, the creators of the biggest smash hit of all time bring you the next episode in the star wars saga, the Empire Strikes back. You might be surprised to know that classic and hundreds of other films were created inside this nondescript building on kerner boulevard in san rafael. Thats a paint and sample section of the trestle from the lone ranger up there. Lucas relocated his campus to the presidio in 2005, and he took the original door with him. Now on display after a decade, the studios new owners are calling it quits. They tell us 30 to 10 is simply going out of business due to adverse business conditions, including the declining use of miniature practical effects in Film Production and also the halt in production due to the hollywood strikes. Sean howes says the landlord plans to repurpose the building. Its a travesty. I mean, this is a historic place. The other part of it is its a tragedy for the bay area filmmaking community. We reached out to the buildings owner but have not heard back. Sean howes says hes launching a campaign to save the campus and continue its film making legacy. We are in the process of setting up a go fund me so this is probably the coolest hidden gem of this property. This is the original theater. Its where that cool theater sound quality was born and tested. In fact, the speakers are still on the wall. Sean howes hoping to preserve all the history. I would encourage if people do care about this place and they care about their film and everything to show their support of the continued mission of this facility in san rafael. Ill tell you what, this is an interesting game because i heard that the wind is going to be like maybe 25mph up there for this game. Boston college, its a red bandanna game and theyre going to come out. A lot of emotion. But Florida State, they have so many weapons on the offense. Keon coleman transfer from Michigan State is having an exceptional year so far. I think that Florida State will overwhelm them in the fourth quarter, 330 eastern time, alabamas on the road at usf. Wouldnt be surprised to see alabama maybe take a different approach at quarterback this week. I wouldnt either, especially after the game. Jalen milroe had last week against texas. You know, very dangerous dual threat quarterback. But when it comes to sitting in the pocket, executing the offense, hes not that great. This is exactly what alabama needs coming off of that texas loss playing against usf. Theyll get back on track then prime time on abc. The backyard brawl separated by about 80 miles. Pitt in West Virginia. Oh, man, i was looking forward to this game. But then pitt lost to cincinnati last week. So you know, narduzzi, he had some very intense film sessions this week. Phil djokovic, the quarterback, i think hes going to have an outstanding game. Pitt will bounce back and beat West Virginia on the road. As of last month, the california Highway Patrol was trying to fill more than 1000 vacant officer positions across the state. And according to the Public Policy institute of california, in 2021, the number of patrol officers per 100,000 residents was the lowest it had be in 30 years. Since 1991. Bu one bay area countyaseen trying out a new strategy, offering the largest hiring bonusn the country. And its working. Were talking about 75,000. Joining me now is Alameda Police chief nishat joshi, who signed off on the idea. Chief, its great to have you with us this morning. Good morning. Thank you for having me here. As well. Absolutely. Well, i got to say, the 75,000 figure certainly catches your eye. How did you settle on that . Sure. You know, there were a couple of things that went into play here. We were looking to see how can we attract quality candidates here while factory in the difficult housing in the bay area. What we had learned is that candidates were considering their ability to afford housing in the bay area and we were able to look at what we could offer to candidates to try to help them overcome that barrier. And so we presented it to city council. City Council Approved it. Our city manager was key in crafting this proposal and it was approved unanimously by city council. So five months ago, how many vacancies did you have and where does that number stand now . Sure so when we first brought this proposal to the city council, there were 24 vacancies. Thats about 30 of the departments staffing. As of now or ever since then, we have been able to swear in three new Police Officers last month. In about two weeks, well be swearing in four more in november. We have one more coming out of the academy. January will have another four coming out of the academy. And then we have another six laterals that are in the pipeline in and on top of that, we actually received over 300 applications for the Police Officer position with alameda pd. Wow, thats great to hear so clearly its working. Where are these officers coming from . Well, weve actually received applications from all over the country, but the majority of the ones that weve been hiring have been locally in the region, some from the Central Valley and others from Northern California area. But weve been able to pull some folks from local Police Departments as well that are in the process. So theyre coming from all over. Thats wonderful. Well, i know you know this, chief, but this hiring bonus appears to not only be the largest in the country, but its certainly towering over comparable bonuses being offered at neighboring Law Enforcement agencies. For example, San Francisco pd is hiring. Bonus is 5,000, which is on the low end. Ansa mateo pd is around 30,000, which was on the high end until nownow, have you heard from other Police Chiefs interested in following suit . And do you think this will incentivize those other departments so as Police Chiefs, we regularly communicate, we work together. We hope to support each other in staffing strategies, Crime Prevention strategies, things of that nature. So you know, i have gotten phone calls from different chiefs and different commanders from different departments looking to see how is it that they can improve their hiring practices. I believe the average vacancy in Alameda County is about 15. So as i mentioned earlier, city of alameda, the alameda Police Department was double that when we first brought this initiative forward. And if all goes well, we hope to be very close to the well significantly have reduced that number by early next year. Thats great. Recent research from mit finds that increased Police Staffing helps to prevent crime. Are you starting to see proof of that in alameda. Yes. So we track our crime regularly. You know, i think its a little bit too early to say, but i certainly believe and ive seen it through my career, being a Police Officer for the last 25 years. I know that when you have a appropriate staffing, the proper resources and good training that you can certainly have an impact on crime numbers. Well, chief, its great to see this always a pleasure to have you with us. Thank you for joining me. Thank you. Absolutely. Well still to come on abc7 mornings we have a baby animal on the peninsula. The nfc title game a couple of years ago being the painful outlier. But they meet again tomorrow in la. You know, the niners, they love to impose their will on opponents with a relentless running game led by christian mccaffrey, who had 152 yards and a touchdown in the season opening win over pittsburgh. Mccaffrey knows his success is directly tied to how effective his teammates block the thing i love about this team is the run game is a commitment of all 11 guys out there, and thats what makes it so special is, you know, one guy has the ball, but theres so much that has to happen in order to make it work. Not a lot of receivers in this league do it, but we take full responsibility like bringing our guys free. Its just something we harp on every week. If everybody has the same mindset of just that physical mentality and im going to give it all every single play, that run game looks really pretty. Hey, if youre going to call out deion sanders, well, maybe just dont. Colorado state plays dions buffaloes this week, rams coach jay norvell criticized deion, saying, you should take off your hat and sunglasses when youre talking to adults, addressing the media. What does dion do . Of course, he provides his whole team with this new line of sunglasses and the kids love it. The buffs are going to beat the rams by like 1000 in this game. All right. Thats a wrap on morning sports. Have a great weekend, everybody. Im larry beil. Thank you, larry. Well, happening today, it just may be the cutest event in the bay area. I have to agree. The cons started almost ten years ago and we actually spoke to the founder about the start of their journey. We had 90 corgis at our first meetup and then now were upwards of over a thousand corgis who come. And a lot of folks actually use this as a destination for travel for a thousand corgis. Can you imagine . Well, the event starts today at ten and it lasts until five at the Alameda County fairgrounds. Tickets are 12 and you can purchase parking online at corgi con. Com. What do you think, lisa i think we should go to corgi con. Yeah, very cute. Yeah. We need a costume though. Yes. Good morning, everybody. But as for today, looking a lot like yesterday where the fog makes its way to the delta and it erodes back the breeze kicks in, making for a sunny but falllike afternoon as we get into your saturday night and sunday the fog quickly moves back in. And then as it peels back, youll notice that we have a few high clouds here. Maybe the east bay, the south bay, but we still are left with mostly sunny conditions for your sunday afternoon. So highs in and around the south bay mid 70s upper 70s we should see about low 80s for this time of year on the peninsula. Breezy 77 redwood city low 70s for you in san mateo, downtown 67, partly cloudy, a little gusty throughout the late day and up in the north bay. Very pleasant and low 70s petaluma only about 80. In calistoga and on the east bay, temperatures will be from the upper 60s for you in berkeley, 66 in richmond, a little breezy. It was that way. Certainly on friday, even thursday was on the cooler side and you head inland looking at 82 in pittsburgh. And this will be about 4 00 in the afternoon. So a couple of hours of some fall ish sunshine on the way. But in between, were looking at the gray sky, the comfortable readings with the breezy winds and then very little change until the middle of next week where we could see a bit of a warm up.
