That likely wont stop people who still want to celebrate cannabis culture. A unique partnership between the Presidio Trust and the California Academy of sciences is bringing a lost part of the bay area Natural Environment back to life. Its a melding of science and conservation thats about to take flight. Abc seven news anchor dan ashley has the details. And if you look through that, you can see the wings. Not many butterflies get the celebrity treatment, but then again, this bunch is about to make history. Turning the clock back nearly a century in San Franciscos presidio, durrell capon is a Senior Research fellow at the California Academy of sciences. He says the butterflies will replace a long lost species called the xerces blue, that went extinct in the 1940s. Syracuse blue was a beautiful blue butterfly that was restricted to the dune habitat from fort funston to baker beach. That was before the west side of San Francisco transformed from sand dunes to development, wiping out their habitat. But ecologist lou stringer says the presidio has spent decades restoring the native dunes around the former army post, including butterfly friendly plants like the edible deerweed. If we didnt have this habitat, we wouldnt have the plant and we wouldnt have the ability to bring back the species that was lost to San Francisco. So with butterflies in tow, the team hit the trail. But they say the scientific part of the journey actually began much earlier in the sand dunes of monterey. Thats where biologists from the academy were able to identify the closest living relative to the extinct blue sources, combining sophisticated genetics with matching samples from their own collection. The results pointed to a species known as the silvery blue. In fact, we sequenced the complete genome of three different subtypes of the silvery blue butterflies so we could say which one was closer. Just push it right in there and with a delicate touch, wildlife ecologist Phoebe Parker shams helped settle the presidios newest residents into their adopted home. Oh my gosh, look at it, look. Oh, look at that already. It already jumped out, placing them underneath a protective net to let them get acclimated and even giving them a quick drop of gatorade for hydration. And they get a sense of this is good habitat. And then they stay, hopefully stay put, sort of get the way worked into the plant, hopefully lay some eggs, on those plants. For the presidio, its the latest in a string of native reintroductions, ranging from coyotes to pond turtles to the western fence lizard. And they believe partnering with the academy of sciences could offer new opportunities. Absolutely. Its a place of experimentation and innovation around conservation in the 21st century, a living lab with a potential to bring native environments back to life in San Francisco. Dan ashley, abc seven news. The teams will also be using a Citizen Science platform called inaturalist. It also helps volunteers track those butterflies. Pretty neat. Well, National Parks week kicks off today, and to celebrate entry fees to all National Parks are waived for the day. Many parks are already free, like the point reyes or the presidio, but others like yosemite, kings canyon and sequoia National Parks are free for the entire day. Other sites like muir woods , require a reservation, and alcatraz also requires a ferry ticket to get to the island. And yes, we can say it, no rain in the forecast, at least for this weekend. Lisa, i know youre tracking everything we need to know, but it feels good to finally say that. Yes, i was telling you, i was in Southern California where it poured, so didnt escape it down there either. It follows you . Yeah, exactly. But were definitely looking at some really nice weather over the weekend. It will get warmer if you like the warmer days. Thats on sunday. Holding on monday, but low clouds and fog to start off this morning. Sun coming up at 627, sets at 750. Thats 13 hours and 24 minutes of daylight. And look at live doppler seven, where all of california is pretty quiet right now. We have numbers in a narrow range from the upper 40s up in cloverdale. Well, cloverdale, 5249, santa rosa, saint helena, sonoma. And then weve got those low 50s in oakland, 49 in fremont, though, and a look outside emeryville. Theyre mostly cloudy this morning. And as we go through the 8 00 hour, those clouds begin to peel back. And then by 9 00, partly sunny over the weekend, weve got sunshine and spring warmth with the warmest day of the weekend will be tomorrow and even the entire week. Even though were going to hold on to that warmth on monday, well get some cooling along the coast for your monday, and then well look for temperatures to continue to drop off after we peak on sunday and monday, and some neighborhoods with perhaps even some rain showers, light rain showers by next friday. Heres a look at the low clouds and the fog early this morning. Then were left with sunny conditions for your saturday afternoon. And then as High Pressure builds, we have less in the way of that marine influence for your sunday. Even at the coast. And the winds will be lighter. So as a result, the warmest day certainly will be tomorrow. Heres a look at the winds that will continue to pick up throughout the day today, especially at the coast, 25 to 35 miles an hour and inside the bay. Not too bad, but well call it breezy. About 10 to 15 miles an hour. And then this is a look at sunday how the winds will really be much lighter out there. If you are headed to at t park, weve got the diamondback in town with temperatures in the low 60s. And notice not a big warm up. Weve got those breezy winds, but it will be bright out there with temperatures in around the mid 60s. By that ninth inning. As for your sunday, here come the red colors from the Sacramento Valley into the inland valleys, and that takes us up into the 80s. So certainly a warm afternoon, mid 70s for the bay shore. And looking at those 60s at the coast by monday, notice the warmth Still Holding inland. But typical of a cool down. We get that cooler breeze at the shoreline and then look at how dramatic it is for your tuesday. With temperatures a lot cooler out there and even below average as for your highs today, look for temperatures from the upper 60s. San mateo 72, in palo alto, look for those upper 70s, maybe a stray 80 degree temperature there inland. So a beautiful day. But it will take some time. Just a couple of hours throughout the Morning Hours for the clouds to scatter on out. 67 will make for a warmer day in San Francisco and the accuweather seven day forecast. Weve got a great start. Then looking at a sunny afternoon, the warmth is really with us for your sunday. The coast will even come up a few degrees and then by monday we will still be warm inland. But youll feel the breeze if youre here in the city and then the rest of the week looking cooler. And then by friday could bring in a few light showers. Nothing like last weekend though i was going to say. There it is, we said not this weekend. Yeah, but 80 for tomorrow . Yeah. Very warm. Nice. Thanks lisa.
