This haze has become an almost annual occurrence during wildfire season on the west coast. Of course it brings those Serious Health and respiratory concerns with it. So lets check in now with abc7 news meteorologist sandy patel. Yeah and julian and omar. This is going to stick around through tomorrow. So lets take a look at the air quality right now and you will notice there are some parts that are in the red, believe it or not, from redwood city out towards fremont livermore, san jose. That is unhealthy air. We have orange for santa rosa, San Francisco, oakland, concord area and that is poor for sensitive groups. So as we take a look at the smoke forecast, notice that northerly wind is going to continue to drive smoke into the bay area. So tomorrow morning during the commute, youre going to notice the thick smoke. But later in the afternoon, even going into tomorrow, were going to thursday excuse me, youre going to start to notice an improvement as we take a look at a live picture right now from our exploratorium camera. Hard to tell if its low clouds or haze. Its a combination of both. Air quality advisory through tomorrow due to smoke from the wildfires in Northern California and oregon, some safety tips. Keep your windows and doors closed. Bring your pets inside and put your ac on. Recirculate here is where that smoke is coming from. Oregon and Northern California. So much smoke in the bay area. You can hardly see the bay bridge. Its really bad. I mean usually you can see east bay. The smoke is so thick from the port of oakland you can barely see the San Francisco skyline. People all around the bay are seeing, smelling and feeling it very smoky. It smells like a campfire. It started to feel it in my throat and now i have my mask on in the east bay. Some high schools canceled practices because of bad air quality. But amina ship chandler had no issues in lafayette. I dont think its too bad. Just yet, but i mean, the next few days it could affect our playing air quality. Experts say we could expect to see impacts for the next couple of days. These fires up north in california and in Southern Oregon have kind of picked up over the weekend and unfortunately, the weather patterns have changed and its just bringing it right over us now, there might be sort of short term unhealthy patches of air quality, so people should, you know, use the should take precautions in north beach at coal hardware, people have been stopping in and buying face masks. Ive had a couple come in, but i expect far more to come in shortly tonight, an orange haze hangs over cupertino in the south bay. Someone like myself with autoimmune deficiencies, its kind of difficult to get through with your day to day life. Experts say if you need to stay indoors or keep your windows closed if possible or seek out a cooling center in San Francisco, suzannephan abc7 news. And now its just not the smoke but pgandes says it may now need to shut off power to some homes this week to reduce the risk of wildfires. The utility says a Public Safety power shut off is possible in eight norcal counties on thursday. Napa is the only bay area county included in this. Its just a watch for now. Former chief Lauren Armstrong sat down with abc7 news to provide an update on where he is. He says a report by an independent state arbitrator clears him of any wrongdoing. Armstrong was fired earlier this year over his alleged handling of some internal investigations. My hope is that, you know, we acknowledge the fact that, you know, ive been vindicated and we acknowledge the fact that i do have a passion for the city of oakland. And well see what decisions are made after that. Oakland, ndoubleacp, is now joining the call for armstrong to be reinstated. And the Police Commission has hinted that he could end up on the short list of candidates that is sent to mayor shengtao. This comes as oakland businesses are criticizing the city for missing a deadline to get funds to fight retail crime. The issue came up at Tonights City Council meeting. All of your districts, you guys see it every day prioritize Public Safety and help your small businesses. Thats where the money needs to go because they create jobs for the community. Small businesses are now preparing to fight back on their own with a one day strike. The date has yet to be announced today we sat down with San Francisco mayor london breed for a wide ranging conversation on the direction of the city. One item that came up was increased Police Presence in the twin peaks neighborhood after the deadly shooting of a 19 year old officer say they found the man badly hurt from a gunshot early sunday morning around 2 a. M. He died at the hospital on our 3 p. M. Program getting answers. Mayor london breed called the shooting a targeted incident, adding that the city is considering other measures to deter crime in that area. Twin peaks has been a bit of a hotspot for some time now and , you know, car break ins and other violence incidents that have taken place. But its the most beautiful, iconic destination in San Francisco. And so we have to look at some solutions. The ideas floated by breed include installing a new gate up at the lookout spot, adding new surveillance equipment and possibly closing. Twin peaks during certain parts of the day. The Sonoma CountyHealth Officer said this is due to a higher rate of severe cases of respiratory illnesses between the fall and spring and points out that patients in Health Care Facilities are at a greater risk of hospitalizations and deaths. In those cases, particularly those who are young children, pregnant or the elderly they have, or those who have Chronic Health conditions. The mask order will be in effect from november 1st to april 30th, happening tomorrow, governor gavin newsom will speak at the United Nations climate ambition summit. Newsom has set some ambitious climate goals, like having the state reach net zero Carbon Emissions in 100 Clean Electricity by 2045. Hes expected to give remarks on californias future as a world leader on climate goals. And we have some new developments on the nearly billion dollar purchase of land in solano county. A group of Silicon Valley investors is buying up the more than 50,000 acres to develop a, quote, utopian city partially surrounding the Travis Air Force base. Earlier this week, governor gavin newsom also expressed criticism or skepticism, rather, of this project. Our abc seven news political analyst Jackie Speier is taking her next career step and gave a big announcement earlier today on abc seven news. She wants to return to public service. Ive decided to announce here on abc seven that im going to run for the board of supervisors in San Mateo County in whats called district one, which is going to be vacated by supervisor dave pine because hes up against term limits. So. Wow so im going back to my roots. She represented the peninsula in the house of representatives for seven terms before deciding not to run for reelection last year. She says theres a lot of work to do in San Mateo County, in particular addressing housing issues, childhood poverty and the strain on the middle class. There was a big push to get people registered to vote across the nation with the 2024 general election a little over a year away and a special election coming up. Even sooner. Volunteers are advocating for voters to get engaged. Historically see minorities and youth have not been mobilized to vote, to turn out to vote. Theres been a great push for these communities to be registered to vote, but that register often isnt enough, and we need to do more in order to get them to actually show up to the ballot box or to turn in their voter, their voter form. Sacramento countys District Attorney is suing the city for its alleged inaction on the issue in the last seven years. Our unhoused population in sacramento has exploded. To over 250. We have more Homeless People in sacramento than in San Francisco. The da says he is suing the city of sacramento for not cleaning up homeless encampments and instead letting the issue escalate. The lawsuit also claims the situation has created a Public Safety crisis, as the da has a list of demands, including more shelters and a ban on daytime camping. Sacramentos mayor says the da lacks a basic understanding of the situation and of the capital citys limited finances as well. There are so many people out there building a better bay area every day and bringing you those meaningful stories are what we want to focus on. So tonight were highlighting a few of those breakthroughs. Our first is bettering San Francisco by doing a little bit of cleaning up. We went out in San Francisco today with some local muralists in the Mission District to see how the city is working to clean up its image in a positive way. Its nice to discover something where you can point somebody in the right direction and then later on in life, theres successful artists. And we got a firsthand look at the world of graffiti and street tagging in San Francisco and how these muralists, police and Community Volunteers are all working together to push street art in a creative way. She says she got involved with project one life after her uncle died from a fentanyl overdose. Several years ago. Thats when she started the chapter in san anselmo. Her story is also up on the abc seven bay area app. Our final building a better bay area breakthrough was in menlo park tonight, a special benefit concert was held tonight for local farm workers nearly eight months after the mass shooting in half moon bay. Abc seven News Reporter tim jonze shows us how neighbors are stepping up to help neighbors in the months since the. Hi. All this it was music for a cause on tuesday night, gilroy based nonprofit earth to table hosted a benefit concert for farmworkers in half moon bay. Without them, we would not eat. And so their work is so sacred. The event featured a variety of performers as well as speakers. Its goal was to highlight some of the struggles faced by local farmworkers, some of whom were in the crowd. The smiles on their face tonight, seeing them on stage and also just them seeing coming out of the their environment to see how much the community appreciates them. Honestly, it really means a lot. Belinda arriaga is the founder of alejos, one of the beneficiaries of the fundraiser. She says the past year has been especially difficult for many in the community. First, with the mass shooting that left seven dead and then with the heavy winter storms that flooded fields around the state and put many out of work with the donations, with the funding that we get, were able to turn around and buy resources for them. Some of those resources include things like economic assistance as well as Mental Health counseling. Beyond the money raised, though, some workers like ramone say it was just nice to feel appreciated. He spoke to us with the help of a translator. I feel really happy. My blood is like pumping. And i actually wanted to start to dance. Organizers say they hope this benefit concert is the first of many more to come because for them, the hard work is worth it. We must uplift, we must respect , and we must advance the rights and protections of farmworkers who are toiling every day in menlo park. Tim johns, abc seven news. Eli lilly, the maker of the Maker Company of manjaro, has filed lawsuits against ten medical spas, wellness clinics and pharmacies for allegedly selling knockoff drugs. The suit claims these places market and sell products that are not fda approved and fraudulently claim to be their drug. Most of the lawsuits claim misuse of their trademark to the original manjaro is approved to treat type two diabetes, and the fda warns that off brand weight loss drugs they can be unsafe. Eli lilly seeks to block sales of what they consider counterfeit versions of their drug and receive financial damages. New at 11 United Airlines is making use of its brand new electric super tugs. These machines can move airplanes across tarmacs and runways without burning any jet fuel. Laxs first airport to use these emission free, Battery Powered tugs can last up to nine hours on a single charge. This is this is not all, you know, uniteds also invested in electric airplanes. We have a regional jet coming in 2026. Weve also invested in electric flying taxis. Also has invested in Hydrogen Powered jet engine. Yeah late tomorrow night, going into thursday, it will improve julian and emma as we take a look at the sunset from tonight from mount tam, you can see just how smoky it was. Smoke just shrouding the bay area and you can see the haze in the air from our emeryville camera looking at the port of oakland. Visibility is low around parts of the bay area. Not just because of the smoke but because of low clouds over two miles in half. Moon bay, six miles in oakland, san jose reporting four mile visibility. You normally have ten mile visibility. It gives you an indication of how things are looking 50s and 60s on those temperatures right now on live doppler seven, we have some low clouds right near the coastline that area of low pressure that has been providing us with the cooler than average conditions still with us. But its going to kick on out of here as we head towards tomorrow as this trough to our north deepens. Its going to push it on out, but that trough is going to bring gusty north winds, which is why a fire weather watch goes up for the north bay hills, lake county and solano county. 11 p. M. Tomorrow, runs until 11 a. M. Thursday. Solano county until 6 p. M. Thursday. Its the combination of those gusty winds, 25 to 30 humidity, any fires that do develop will rapidly grow and spread in size. So that is the concern. Even as we go hour by hour, 7 00 tomorrow night, things are still fine. But look what happens thursday morning. Over 30 mile an hour north, northeasterly winds that gusty wind is a very drying wind. And when you have that happen, especially around this time of year, fire is fires are a concern as you go into tomorrow afternoon, were looking at moderate fire danger index and then look what happens thursday morning as the strongest winds come in. Its going to go into the high to very high category, the yellow and the orange for parts of the north bay. So just be aware, stay aware, and in case any fires develop from our san jose camera, it is certainly a murky view, smoky and hazy skies through tomorrow. Gusty in the hills, high fire danger wednesday night into thursday and autumn arrives on friday at 1150. At night. Hazy tomorrow morning. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Well see areas of low clouds tomorrow afternoon. We continue to see the hazy sunshine in mid 60s to the low 80s. It will be breezy right along the coastline.
