Stuck in a sinkhole on a rural county road in santa cruz. Skyland road suddenly collapsed late tuesday night. You see that blue van ended up inside that gaping hole, wedged at both ends. The driver wasnt hurt. With another storm today, people who live in this area are concerned about getting around. Its going to be a while before we get to use this road to go to town. So hopefully the other only road out of here stays open. So, crews say theyre not going to take that van out until they can stabilize the area around it. Caltrans now saying highway 17 will not fully reopen through Scotts Valley until monday at the earliest. Crews are working to clear a giant mudslide. There is one lane open in each direction. Youre looking at video of crews working through the night, clearing mud and debris from the northbound lanes and tuesdays slide hit in the exact same place where one of our morning photographers was hit by a land slide last month. He is still covering from that accident and talking about it for the first time. Coming up in just a few minutes, the video he took from inside and his warning now for other drivers. Good news for commuters heading west along the Altamont Pass in livermore this morning. Your drive is going to be much, much better than yesterdays. Sky7 was live above the nightmarish backup on 580 as crews temporarily nix fixed a massive hole near greenville road. It took more than 20 hours to get this done. Westbound lanes finally reopened around 10 30 last night. And just about an hour ago, the chp reopened westbound interstate 80 near the nevada state line. The chp posted these photos on facebook late last night after a mudslide there. The highway was shut down after several cars got trapped. No one got hurt and tow trucks were able to clear those cars overnight. What a scary situation for the driver inside of that white car. Two Good Samaritans happened to be in the right place at the right time in the east bay. They are krelted with saving the driver. The car was up side down in a creek in livermore. Abc7 News Reporter katie utehs spoke to one of the men who sprang into action. We heard the skidding but i could hear the impact. Reporter cell phone video shows the crash scene. Dan rich discovered near his ranch. The car flipped upside down, the young man was trapped. Reporter neighbor Clayton Weidemann jumped into the creek with dan along highland road. Underwater, we could hear him hitting the window but he couldnt break it. Reporter dan sprang into action again, grabbing a pick axe from his truck and used it to smash the rearside window. Clayton went underwater and went through the car because we didnt know if there was anyone else. Reporter the only person inside, a 20yearold driver who suffered minor injuries. Chp says he drove too fast for wet road conditions. He got very lucky. When you overturn and end up in a creek, it can end up worse than what happened. Reporter dan and clayton pulled the man out before chp and mfgs arrived. It took a lot of you know what to get that done. Reporter courage, perhaps heroics. Anybody would have jumped down in the water to help somebody out, obviously. Reporter a modest rescuer with miraculous timing. That huge hole that opened up this week at lame oroville has just gotten bigger. In fact, a controlled test yesterday did not help. The edge along the spillway broke off and is now gone. Lake oroville is one of the biggest in california and state engineers are closely monitoring it and using a secondary spillway until this one is fixed. Officials said theres no imminent danger to the dam or the public. They expect to get results of yesterdays test sometime this morning as they try to come up with a longterm fix. Well be watching it. Happening today, President Trump will be on hand when Jeff Sessions is sworn in as attorney general. The Senate Confirmed him yesterday by a 524 vote. The alabama senator survived a strong push by democrats to derail his nomination. They questioned his position on voting rights, immigration, and womens health. He actually attempted Senate Confirmation once before and failed in 1986 after he was accused of racial insensitivity. After this vote, sessions urged senators to get along better. The mayor of berkeley now has Police Protection because hes getting death threats. According to berkeley side, jesse started getting threats after calling Milo Yiannopoulos a white nationalist. He later apologized and instead called him alternativerightist. Violent protests shut down the speech. He said the threats will not stop him. The city council was signed off on a compensation package and benefits that will total 300,000. Some City Council Members say they were hesitant to sign off on the 2. 5 year deal but they didnt want to send the wrong signal to kirk patrick after the contract had been extended to her. We are all going to have to live with emergency drought rules a while longer. Despite the fact that weve gotten all this rain and snow, the state Water Resources control board has voted to keep the regulations in place. A coalition of state and local leaders wanted the board to lift restrictions after we received the wettest winter in years, but water officials are concerned about what will happen if the rain and snow start easing up. My biggest concern is up in the north bay during the morning commute. My biggest concern during the evening commute will be in the south bay. That saying doesnt apply to mudslides. Twice in one month, the hillside came crashing down in vict Santa Cruz Mountains near Scotts Valley and both times, drivers were caught in the debris. One of those drivers is our own photographer and friend, ian babcock. He was on his way to work and hes now talking about what that experience was like. Reporter these were the first terrifying moments after abc7 news photographer ian babcock found himself trapped as trees and rocks fell from above. We need chp badly. We have chp, fire and ambulance. Reporter it was 3 00 in the morning and he was on his way to work. The whole mountain just exploded in front of me like this. It just it didnt come down in front of me. It came straight sideways and then crash. That was it. I hit a boulder at 45 miles an hour. I could feel the truck getting raised up and the sound at that point was deafening. Im getting pushed across the highway and boulders are coming in and theres branches coming in and im thinking, this is it. Im done. Reporter but the slide finally stopped and a driver pulled over to help. You all right . Im bleeding from here. The driver saw wires across the hood so ian decided to wait for authorities. Not a month after the slide was cleaned up, it happened again in the same spot. It floored me. It really did and i just was thinking, yeah, i knew that was going to happen. Right now, state law lets cities use automated cameras only for red light enforcement but a bill by assemble assemblyman david chiu would okay a Pilot Program to catch speeders. Investigators from all three jurisdictions believe the break ins are connected and only vehicles with items in plain view were targeted.
