The issue of same sex marriages is going back to the Supreme Court. The justice less review cases in four states that are appealing a ban on same sex marriages. This time they seem to be saying it may be time to rule as a nation. Here is abc7 News ReporterLyanne Melendez. The Supreme Courts announcement caught San FranciscoCity Attorney by surprise. He paused to ask an aid. Once briefed, her rara, who has been at thefer front of the legal battle for marriage equality, has this to say. It is an issue that needs to be settled once and for all. And im very confident that it will be. And i did believe it is going to be the end of it. The court cases from michigan ohio, kentucky and tennessee will be consolidated and heard in april. It involves couples who lost their appeals to marry or to have their marriages recognized in those states. Today only 14 states ban same sex marriages. Chris was the plaintiff behind proposition 8, which cleared the way for six sex marriages in california. She spoke to us over the phone from washington, d. C. Its a really joyous day to see the possibility that another group will have that opportunity. And i am extremely hopeful that they will rule the right way they will rule in the way of fairness and equality. The questions before the justices would be do gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry or do states have a right to ban them. The four liberals will vote in favor of same sex marriages. Together with justice kennedy, who sits in the center of these cases and makes them 54. Then i think the chief justice john roberts, will actually realize that history is on the side of samesex marriage. Bill welcomes the opportunity to debate the matter once again. We are so pleased that the Supreme Court is going to give the people of california and so many other states their day in court per their right to define marriage between a man and a woman. Many in San Franciscos Castro District believe this will be the most significant ruling ever on gay rights. Its finally coming to a validation of what we all support, and thats freedom to marry who you love. And after the case is argued in april a decision is expected in late june. In the newsroom, Lyanne Melendez abc7 news. In february 2004, San Francisco began issuing samesex marriage licenses until an order to stop from the california Supreme Court. 2005 the state Legislature Passed a bill legalizing samesex marriage. It was then vetoed by governor arnold schwarzenegger. Three years later proposition 8 passed banning samesex marriage. Two years it was it was ruled invalid making samesex marriage legal in california. Then yesterday the Supreme Court agreed to decide the issue for the entire nation. 5 15, the time. We are looking at a lot of clouds out there. The mist and drizzle fog, spare the air. The usual, although we are going to get relief a little bit over the weekend. Theres a dense fog advisory for the san joaquin valley. You can see some of the cloud cover there focuses on the north bay. So this is where yesterday we had sprinkles and we had brighter skies into the south bay. One system has grazed Northern California and another one on the way. Heres the look at the airport where we are looking at cloudy skies. Look at the temperatures. Quite mild. 55 Half Moon Bay. 48 san jose. Low 50s from San Francisco to oakland. With about 50 morgan hill. Some of the coolest temperatures out by the delta where we have some dense fog. Fairfield 45 degrees. A quarter mile visibility, 50 up in santa rosa and the fog in napa. Its also in san jose this morning. Give yourself some extra time. Four mile visibility in the santa clara region. Quarter mile i mentioned up by the delta. Just a mile at santa rosa. So with the little fog this morning and the haze and the spare the air day, poor air quality north bay and central bay, but things will get a little better in terms of air quality tuesday and wednesday. The winds are going to pick up. But unfortunately the rain winds are going to pick up is not a cold front its strong High Pressure building in and that will mix things out a little bit. Even though High Pressure is associated that stagnate air. This will allow for more dry days. For january we are looking at the 14th spare the air day the 20th of the season. And, boy january not only going down perhaps in history for this but also for no rainfall. It looks like we are going to stay dry right on through the weekend with a possibility of a few showers in the north bay. Thats it. After that, it could go down as no rainfall for the entire month. So we look for the foggy and drizzly start. A chance of showers both today and tomorrow north bay. It would be nice, but we just picked up a few sprinkles yesterday. Rain up in santa rosa from that system that just headed out. But as High Pressure builds on in, you are noticing the mild temperatures and a tough time for this front to push on through. So as it does, we will look for the cloudier conditions, the chance the hazy skies in the south, and then we are looking at really much dryer weather and, in fact, temperatures well above average into next weekend. Perhaps some records. We are going to the end of the month and this is the second wettest month of the bay area rainfall season with 4. 5 inches typical. We are talking nothing for the month. 54 in oakland today for high, as well as palo alto and san jose. A mild afternoon despite the cloud cover. 62 up in the north bay, san rafael and mid60s on the coast. Accuweather sevenday forecast looking at a chance of showers lingering north over the holiday on monday and mild with more sunday.
