A 21,000acre wild fire in arizona forced thousands of people to evacuate from their homes. The fire is burning in communities around north of phoenix. Officials say its 1 contained. Strong winds and high temperatures have been fanning the flames. One firefighter suffered minor injuries but is expected to make a full recovery. Qualifying residents are a parent, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, soninlaw, daughterinlaw or siblings. Those who are not on the list, grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, nieces, nephews, sisterinlaw and brotherinlaw. We asked traveler what is they think. Abc7 news learned before the shooting the gunman set off a metal detector and allowed into the building. A source with knowledge of the investigation says u. P. S. Driver jimmy lam activated the detector and a Security Guard allowed him inside anyway. The backpack had two guns inside. Two weeks ago, lam shot and killed three drivers and then himself. U. P. S. Would not comment on the revelations saying its investigation is ongoing. Police in san jose trying to find out what led to an attempted murdersuicide. A man shot a woman and then killed himself at creston lane near an elementary school. The woman is expected to be okay. Police say the man is the only suspect and there were no other victims. It was another female that was seen running away and we determined that that was a female because of the shots fired running away from the scene itself but there are no other victims that were aware of. A Nonprofit Group that deals with gangs tells abc7 this neighborhood struggles with a lot of gang related issues. Police have not said whether this particular shooting was gang related. New this morning, one of the popes closest advisers is taking a leave of absence following charges. Cardinal george pell said overnight hes taking a leave from the australian post after authorities charged him with multiple counts of sexual assault. Hes the highest Ranking Member of the vatican to be charged in the Catholic Churchs longrunning sex scandal. The 78yearold denies the allegations. Cardinal pell is also the treasurer for the vatican and close ally of pope francis. New developments in the case of the santa cruz doctor accused of sex crimes against children. Despite prosecutors objections, the judge granted the doctor bail yesterday. Set it at 6. 4 million. If he bails out, he would be under house arrest with gps monitoring and limits on internet access. The terms would include a nocontact order with potential witnesses and alleged victims. We definitely appreciate the courts analysis, but nonetheless, we are concerned its not enough to protect the public. First time yesterday, we saw this woman, one of the nurses in the case whens accused of being an accomplice. She faces similar charges and they will be tried together. Her bail is already set at 500,000. Shes banned from practicing as a nurse until the case is resolved. Prosecutors are also hoping the third defendant, this is the only nurse, emily stephens, will be extradited from arizona. Next court date is july 27th. Happening today, a protest planned in front of the new courthouse in dublin. Theyre hoping to put a hold on incustody arraignments. Now, the east county hall of justice just opened monday and protest is being led by a public defender. According to the east bay press, that public defender brendan woods said holding arraignments makeless it hard for relatives of defendants to be there. Many of them live further away in oakland, berkeley and albany. Meanwhile, though, the presiding judge claims family members dont usually attend arraignments and with the county jail nearby it makes sense. A report of the San Francisco City Treasurers Office shows huge inequities in the countys bail system. Just to reiterate, to get out of the jail before trial, those arrested pay the entire bail or and then be let out before the Court Hearing or cant make the full amount, pay a percentage, normally 10 to the bail company and nonrefundable. A report released by the city treasurer found fees largely paid by residents of low income neighborhoods and communities of color. In fact, San Franciscons paying 10 million to 15 million a year in the nonrefundable bail fees. This is just wrong. Money should not be a determining factor how big your bank account is in whether or not you get out of jail.
