off-the-field trouble and her hope for the future. and good morning, america. we have a lot to get to this wednesday morning and we begin with that american sniper verdict. the jury got the case a little after 7:30. by 10:00 they had a verdict. eddie routh convicted of murdering chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield. of course, this case made so famous by the movie "american sniper," you see bradley cooper playing chris kyle right there. >> and six of the jurors will be joining us in an abc news exclusive taking us inside their deliberations, but first abc's ryan owens has the latest from stephenville, texas. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it did not take this jury long to decide they did not buy the insanity defense. they only had the case for about 2 1/2 hours and nearly an hour of that was dinner. >> we, the jury, find the defendant, eddie ray routh, guilty of the offense of capital murder. >> reporter: eddie routh will spend the rest of his life in a texas prison. the outcome the families of american sniper chris kyle and chad littlefield were hoping for. >> we've waited two years for god to get justice for us on behalf of our son. >> reporter: routh showed no emotion as the verdict was read. he hasn't this entire trial. and no reaction this morning from taya kyle, chris' widow. she left in tears during defense closing arguments and never returned, but she was here every day of the nine-day trial and was the first witness. >> who were you married to prior to february the 2nd, 2013? >> chris kyle. >> okay. >> reporter: the judge didn't allow audio to be broadcast during the trial so this is our first time hearing her emotional testimony. >> i was outside our house on easter morning, chris hiding easter eggs for the kids. >> reporter: as she watched jurors through family photos of the war hero whose life became a blockbuster. >> green light. >> reporter: detailing the last time she saw her husband alive. >> just said we loved each other and gave each other a kiss and a hug like we always did. >> reporter: this morning, we also finally hear the killer's voice on the police interrogation tape. eddie routh answering that pivotal question. >> did you know the difference between wrong and right? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: and apologizing to the victims' families. >> i'd tell them i'm so sorry for what i've done, and if i could have done it differently, i'd done it a whole lot differently. >> reporter: in closing arguments the prosecutor told the jury this man shot two men in the back in our county find him guilty and that's exactly what they did. george. >> thanks, ryan. we are joined now by several of the jurors who reached this decision last night. thank you so much for joining us. i know you had a long night last night, but let me begin with you, barrett, you all deliberated for a little over two hours. how were you able to reach it so quickly. >> we all had our strong feelings. we were led the same direction. we spent time to go back over the facts that led us in that direction and ultimately, unanimous decision, you know, multiple times. we just like i said reinforced why it was a unanimous decision and where we got to where we got. >> heidi, was there any disagreement at the beginning? >> not really. it was kind of, we felt like we shouldn't just come to a decision. we felt like we needed to talk things over first and figure out whether everybody was on the same page or if we needed to discuss something more so we took our time before we actually came to the guilty verdict. we discussed different things and asked questions and talked it over. >> christina yeager, eddie routh had so much bizarre behavior. did you all just decide he was faking? >> that was something that we really had to figure out in the beginning. i know a lot of us came into this jury questioning that. but evidence shows that there was a real definite pattern there when it came to, you know, his earlier convictions before the trial. >> sara, tell us more about that pattern. >> well, when i say there's a pattern that we saw, it was, you know, he would be -- he would get intoxicated, get in trouble, and then the police would show up and he would say i'm a veteran. i have ptsd. i'm insane. you know, and every time something bad happened, he'd pull that card and also just other evidence like his other convictions and then as well as, you know, just pattern behaviors through his interviews with the specialists. >> and bottom line, barrett, you all were convinced that he knew the difference between right and wrong when he pulled those triggers? >> yes, sir. >> without a doubt. >> without a doubt. >> he knew the consequences of pulling the trigger the first time. >> a lot of people are wondering if he could get a fair trial given all the publicity surround ing this case, given the movie, the extreme popularity of this movie "american sniper," did any of you see the movie and are you confident that you went into this with an open mind? >> the movie? there might have been a few of us that did, barrett might have. >> i did. >> barrett, you saw the movie. how did it impact you? >> it gave me a better outlook on chris' role as a marine, what that job entitles, a greater respect for it. but, as far as the actions that took place on february 2nd, you know, chad was still in the picture and chad was not in that movie. i basically put the fact that chris was a marine, you know, out of my mind and just looked at him as a person. looked at chad as a person and looked at eddie as a person and tried to make, you know, reasonable judgment. >> finally, is there anything else you want our viewers to know about this case? >> i think -- >> it's a sad story for both families, it's a very sad story. it's a tragedy and it's -- i hope that the families, the littlefield and kyle families get some closure over there. >> well, thank you all for your service and that's how they said it, all right, george. now to that air safety alert. federal regulators allowing southwest to keep flying more than 100 planes despite missing a key inspection and abc's david kerley is at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson airport with the latest. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this caused quite a mess for southwest airlines yesterday. it had to cancel 80 flights because it missed an inspection on a quarter of its fleet of a spoefk aircraft. now, the problem is the inspection of the rudder, in the tail section. now, they missed that inspection for 128 aircraft out of nearly 450. but, the faa is going to let them continue to fly those aircraft if they complete these inspections over the next five days by sunday. now, why? this is kind of your checkup of your car. lot of systems have to be looked at. it doesn't mean they're going to fail. but southwest has had a tense relationship with the faa over inspections. in this case the faa is saying if southwest takes care of these inspections by sunday these aircraft are safe to fly. for now. >> george. >> okay, david, thanks very much. let's check in with ginger. more brutal winter weather. we got another storm coming to the south and a lot more cold up here. >> third in less than a week for this area, and this is not something you normally see at the end of february, so you could hear it on ryan owens' umbrella, it was either rain or sleet and both being detected around dallas. some snow now will move in. winter weather advisories from there through winter storm warnings, southern arkansas to atlanta to richmond. they're in a winter storm watch at this point. so it's that large swath and i think a lot of folks are going to get that show-stopping, school-closing type of snow and a little bit of ice in some places. so, here's some of the pockets of heavier snow, southwestern arkansas. you can see, as you get into the mountains of tennessee, western north carolina and as it wraps up in virginia and delaware. this all because we've got cold air on top, of course, and major cold air, look at where we're at, great lakes ice coverage, 84.5%. that is the highest yet this season. last year we made it above 90% just to give you some perspective. we're getting there. we have this video you've got to see off lake huron of an ice cutter trying to make it through. there were actual shipping lanes shut down. people that could not get through, and although we have a little break today with some mild air, more cold headed our way. look at some of the subzero temperatures headed in for chicago, philadelphia, down to 11 as we start your saturday morning so, robin, i wish i had better news. i will eventually for some people so stick around. >> that gas main. nearly 24 hours after people started to report the smell of gas in the air. there are pieces of this home everywhere, insulation like this litters the neighborhood. the explosion so powerful, it rocked homes in every direction. the video stunning. you're watching a jersey shore home blown to pieces in a natural gas explosion tuesday. watch again. a police dash cam catching it all. from the air, you can see the home blown clear from its base, a gas-fed fire in its wake. the explosion felt a mile away. >> it happened so quickly. >> reporter: the first sign of trouble came 90 minutes earlier when someone reported smelling gas in the neighborhood which is near atlantic city. 75 homes were soon evacuated. >> confirmed we got a critical, got one down critical. >> one down critical. okay, 10-4. >> reporter: it turns out the house was under renovation and empty, but 15 people were hurt including six firefighters and two utility workers who were critically injured and airlifted to an er. >> mostly had hearing problems. >> reporter: town officials say a two-inch gas main apparently broke, though it's still unclear how and what exactly ignited the blast. the police chief telling me they released this video to show the dangers of gas leaks, something they say could happen to anyone. >> i think a lot of times people minimize the potential risk to them and i think this really highlights the fact that, you know what, there is a real grave danger and you need to get away from any potential gas leaks. >> now at last check those two utility workers were still in critical condition and after surveying that damage up close it's amazing they survived. robin. >> it really is. all right, tom, thank you. now to amy with the other top developing stories right now. good morning, amy. >> good morning, ronnin. good morning, everyone. and we begin with new details overnight about that commuter train crash north of los angeles that left dozens of people injured, some critically. the train slamming into a truck and we are now learning more about the driver and why his truck may have been on the tracks. here's abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: this morning, the man who drove a pickup truck and trailer on to these railroad tracks causing a fiery crash is behind bars. police arresting jose alejandro sanchez-ramirez on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. >> it was not stuck or bottomed out on the track or something like that, but traveled down the railroad track itself. >> reporter: the metrolink train left east ventura at 5:25 a.m. just 20 minutes into the trip the truck turned on to the tracks and traveled about 80 feet before colliding with the train head-on. police say the driver may have accidentally turned too soon thinking he was already at the intersection just ahead. but overnight, the driver's lawyer said trucks often get caught on the tracks at that location. it appears from preliminary reports there was nothing mr. ramirez could do to prevent the accident once his truck was stuck on the tracks. ted maloney pulled victims off the train. >> there was laptops, lunches, purses all over the place. >> reporter: but investigators say this scene could have been much worse. crediting new technology. watch this demonstration, the train on the top of the screen an older model but below on the newer model the crash energy is absorbed by the vega, abc news, oxnard, california. and there is new concern about rising sea levels along the east coast. researchers have found sea levels north of new york city rose by 4 inches between 2009 and 2010. they blame climate change among other factors and predict similar spikes in the near future. well, anthem health insurance now says more than 78 million people may have had their personal information compromised in a recent data breach. that includes up to 19 million non-anthem customers who have related plans with blue cross and blue shield. social security number, names and addresses may have been stolen. four students from wesleyan university in connecticut under arrest facing drug charges after nearly a dozen people overdosed on the drug known as molly. the suspects were immediately suspended. two students who took the drug are still in the hospital. drivers in the south aren't the only ones facing a winter storm. more than 40 cars and trucks were involved in this pileup in maine. one police officer describing the crash site as just a giant pile of mental. metal. well, buick has become the first u.s. automaker to make "consumer reports" list of top ten brands, (announcer) built to be there for your family. love. it's what makes a subaru a subaru. good morning, america. right now, chris kyle's killer sentenced to life in prison in the blockbuster american sniper trial. also right now, the devices strapped to a bank executive and his mother were fake. and the new investigation into dangerous bus drivers caught on camera blowing through red lights. and we do say good morning, america, on this hump day and we have a lot of excitement here this morning. ♪ let it go ♪ ♪ let it go ♪ >> "frozen fever," times square. it has nothing to do with the cold, michael. >> it has nothing to do with the cold but has to do with anna, elsa and olaf. they are back. look at those "frozen" fans skating up a storm right here in the studio. they're here for the worldwide exclusive premiere of the "frozen fever," the brand-new short film that's set to debut in theaters pretty soon. >> "cinderella" very big. looking forward to that in just a little bit. but right now we switch gears and begin with new developments in the bank heist plot in connecticut where an executive and his mother were strapped with fake bombs. there is new information this morning on the two fugitives that forced them into it and gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: this morning, new details about the two men allegedly behind a dramatic home invasion and attempted bank robbery in the connecticut suburbs. abc news learning from police that the suspects wore ski masks, goggles and dark clothing confronting and tying up local bank executive matthew yussman and his 70-year-old mother at their bristol home after midnight monday morning holding them hostage for hours. yussman telling police the two suspects last seen driving a car believed to be a white older model four-door mazda spoke fluent english but with distinct accents, not consistent with being native to connecticut. the men allegedly tying yussman's mother to her bed and strapping what they claimed was an explosive device on him forcing him to travel to the bank where he works at 8:00 a.m. threatening to kill both of them if he didn't steal money from the bank's vault. yussman never entering the building. instead, calling a colleague from the parking lot who alerted police. >> it was just wild to think something like that could happen in a nice neighborhood like this. >> reporter: this morning, police and the fbi say they are still investigating whether yussman was a true victim or part of the plot himself. >> it's very common in violent crime that the victim and the offender are connected in some way. >> reporter: no one was injured in the ordeal and this morning a good sign. yussman's 70-year-old mother seen driving back to her home safe and sound. detectives not far behind. >> if you could say anything what would you say to them? >> i would say god bless you for going through what you did. >> reporter: for "good morning america," gio benitez, abc news, new britain, connecticut. >> boy, a strange story. we're going to turn to big news over the weekend in the sports world. hope solo was reinstated by u.s. soccer and, robin, she sat down with you for an exclusive interview. >> that's right, hope solo has helped lead team usa to two olympic gold medals but lately she's been making more headlines off the field and this morning she's opening up about those problems for the first time. >> what a save by solo! >> reporter: with two olympic gold medals and record 78 career shutouts hope solo is arguably one of the best athletes in the world. but last june her career almost came to a halt. at a family gathering she was charged with domestic violence assault, accused by her nephew of pumping and tackling him. solo pleaded not guilty and was released pending trial. eight months later the case was dismissed. i can only imagine what it had to have been like for those eight months and hearing those things that were said and you were not able to say what happened that night. are you able now? >> it's still very difficult to talk about, what took place that night. so, i'm not going to go into all of the details. i was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of my 17-year-old nephew who is 6'9", 280 pounds. i was struck over the head and concussed pretty severely. it was a very scary night. >> you were not suspended by u.s. soccer and many people felt that in light of what was going on in the nfl with violence and assault and players were being suspended, that you were not and how do you respond to those critics who say, hey, wait a minute, is that fair. >> all of us in my opinion have a fundamental right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. i know u.s. soccer took a lot of heat but i am very grateful that they let due process play itself out. >> but then just one week after being exonerated for assault charges, solo was in the headlines again. her husband, former seattle seahawk jerramy stevens was arrested for driving under the influence, he was driving a u.s. soccer team van. hope was in the vehicle. this time u.s. soccer suspended solo for 30 days. what in the world were you thinking? >> clearly i wasn't thinking. it was horrible choice. i think i just wasn't in a good place emotionally to even make good decisions. i mean, it's not an excuse but i just -- it was stupid. we should have called a taxi. >> i can only imagine, hope, that you must be on a roller coaster of emotions. >> i'm working through those emotions, i was filled with anger and i'm finally able to sit down and talk to somebody about what i've been going through, very traumatic events over the last year, and just being able to speak to somebody has been really beneficial for me. i can cry it out. i can try to understand it. it's been healthy for me to just talk it out and to deal with my emotions instead of just tucking them away. >> knowing that you have so many young fans and they have parents and to know that the suspension was because of a behavioral issue, how do you deal with that? >> i'm not going to be too hard on myself right now. but, you know, in terms of what parents tell their kids, everybody makes mistakes. everybody learns from them hopefully and continues to work on themselves. i'm a work in progress and i will continue to be a work in progress until the end of my days. >> solo is focused on the future and says she's finally in a good place, not perfect but good. what is it that you want people when they see this to walk away thinking about you differently than what they may have thought about you before. >> i want people to realize i'm just human. i'm just human and i make mistakes and i want people to be able to forgive me if they're willing to do so, i just want to be the best athlete i can be, the best person i can be and i know i have a lot of room for improvement. >> and late last night we received a statement from hope's nephew and his mother regarding our story and they believe and this is a quote from them, "it does a disservice to domestic violence victims to suggest that one's physical size is a determinative of whether one is an abuser." they maintain that hope was the aggressor but once again all charges were dropped in that case and she is currently with the national team in portugal and they're playing in a tournament playing norway next week all in anticipation of the world cup which will be this summer in canada. >> she's coming back. >> she's owning up to her mistakes and looking forward to the future and we'll have much more on our conversation in later days. >> good luck to her. ginger. >> let's go to the video, slick roads from dallas up through even atlanta today but this is from ohio. last month the video so good, okay, so a highway patrolman, this car slides out of control and, look, the person falls out of the car. the patrolman can hardly stop. just in time. such a lucky, lucky thing. he ended up being okay. so, as we look at those winter storm warnings and advisories, maybe you make the choice not to go out this morning. des moines, you're in one and some could see 4 to 7 plus inches, locally 10 from des moines to ames even up to waterloo. central illinois and that's just the top storm, right? there she is. looking so adorable herself with little elsas joining in on the fun. >> you know, the little elsas stole the show. i was happy to be there with them. i just had my little angels. they were just so precious, yeah. >> okay, so hang on for this trailer. it's coming up and on in just a few but we've got to get the news from amy. >> that's right. good morning, guys. we begin with the guilty verdict overnight in the american sniper case. a texas jury took only 2 1/2 hours to convict former marine eddie routh of capital murder in the shooting deaths of former navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield. rejecting the insanity defense, routh will spend the rest of his life in prison. this morning six of the jurors told us they believe without a doubt that routh knew the difference between right and wrong. well, a desperate search is under way in seattle for a woman kidnapped from a christian school in nigeria. the reverend phyllis sortor has worked as a missionary in africa for ten years. armed men descended on the school where she was working, but she was the only one taken. her captors are demanding a $300,000 ransom. overnight southwest airlines reached an agreement with regulators to keep flying. the carrier failed to make mandatory inspections on about one-fifth of its fleet. the deal gives the airline until sunday now to make those inspections. and the truck driver police blame for causing a train derailment north of los angeles has been arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run. dozens of passengers were injured, some of them critically. a federal official says it appears the man's truck was traveling down the tracks not crossing them. new details about this gas explosion that destroyed a house being renovated in new jersey. a gas main apparently broke. but it's unclear what caused it to ignite. 15 people were injured, two workers in critical condition. a new class action suit claims a popular pet food is poisoning dogs but the company that makes the dog food is strongly denying those claims. the lawsuit filed in california claims thousands of dogs have died as a result of eating beneful. reported symptoms include liver failure and weight loss. purina which makes beneful insists the food is safe and says two previous lawsuits were dismissed. and finally, the latest demand in what's shaping up to be one of the biggest divorce settlements ever. the estranged wife of billionaire hedge fund owner ken griffin is now asking for $1 million per month in child support for their three kids. how does that break down? what are her bills, you ask. well, apparently she needs 14,000 a month for food, $300,000 a month for a private jet, $160,000 a month for vacations and $2,000 for stationery. that leaves about a half million for rent and utilities? >> how many kids, 12? >> are there enough? >> yes. >> so, anyway, good luck to her. >> that's a lot of thank you notes. $2,000 for stationery. wow. okay. thanks. we're going to turn now to health news now and an important alert about heart disease. it's the number one killer of women in the country and a new study finds too many women fail to recognize the symptoms until it's too late. abc's aditi roy has more on the danger signs to watch for. >> you okay? >> i'm fine. >> you sure? >> reporter: it's the number one killer of women in the u.s. with celebs like rosie o'donnell. >> i had a major heart attack. the pain can be anywhere. it could be your arms, it could be your jaw. it could be your shoulder. it could be your neck. >> mom. >> reporter: and elizabeth banks bringing attention to the cause. >> make it your mission to save your life. >> reporter: heart disease kills one in three women every year. that's one woman every minute. but this morning a new study shows what women don't know about heart disease could kill them. >> what we know is that the signs and symptoms of a heart attack in women can be very vague and they can mimic the signs and symptoms of very common things. >> reporter: researchers at the yale school of public health interviewed 30 women between the ages of 30 and 55 who had heart attacks and found all delayed treatment because they didn't recognize the symptoms or lacked knowledge of their risk factors. so how can you recognize a heart attack? >> chest pain is still the most common symptom of a heart attack. there can be shortness of breath, fatigue, almost flu-like symptoms, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting. >> reporter: tips that could make all the difference. for "good morning america," aditi roy, abc news, san francisco. >> i never would have guessed those final symptoms. >> absolutely. they have been talking about that. sometimes even they say doctors misdiagnose it with women, as well. >> a lot to think about. >> yeah. the bone-chilling temperatures may actually help you lose weight by stimulating the body to burn extra calories. abc's becky worley has more on what's being called cold dieting. good morning there, becky. what are you doing now? >> good morning, robin. i know. this may look like torture as i dip into an ice bath but some claim this could actually be supercharging my metabolism and helping me burn, whoo, extra calories, but does it work? cold dieting, there's a rush of new theories, products and services that say braving the cold amongst other things will burn extra calories. >> hi. >> oh, my gosh. so the kryolife chamber, it uses air cooled by nitrogen gas to create a dry negative 254-degree environment. each session costs $90. the company says three minutes in here has several health benefits including -- >> it's a great supportive tool for weight loss. >> reporter: cold, yes, but weight loss? well, there have been studies that show lengthy exposure to cold can burn extra calories but we couldn't find any directly related to this much shorter exposure like that in the kryolife chamber. ♪ but you may be asking why not just brave the elements? here's the problem. when does boosting your metabolism turn into hypothermia or frostbite or worse? yeah, don't try that at home. a more moderate approach, the cold shoulder. ice packs slot into the vest and the company says wearing it for three hours a day could burn up to 500 extra calories. i'm at san francisco state university to first measure how many calories i burn normally. >> you expended about 1.41 k cals per minute. >> reporter: now 20 minutes wearing the cold shoulder vest. >> your caloric expenditure went up to 1.52 k cals per minute. 7% or 8% maybe increase. >> reporter: do the math. in my case it does add up to an extra 500 calories or the equivalent of 25% increase. the makers of the cold shoulder say they performed a similar test and noted roughly the same calorie boost, 10% to 12%, but they stand by the weight loss claims explaining a different test they did with eight users who wore the cold shoulder twice a day and experienced an extra pound of fat loss over when they didn't use it. bottom line on cold dieting -- >> i definitely would not recommend using this as a replacement to physical energy and energy expenditure that you get via exercise. >> now you don't have to buy anything. if you want to try cold dieting, the old ice bath is right here waiting for you. but our lawyers want me to mention that you might want to talk to your doctor before you try anything like this and, me, robin, i think i'm just going to walk for an extra 10 minutes or 15 minutes and never do this again. >> yeah, who knows how many calories during this report sitting in that -- i thought for sure you'd get out of the tub by then. >> please get out of the tub. >> yeah, really. get out of there. thanks for taking one for the team, becky. >> so tell us, would you cold diet? >> it was a blast filming this episode. it was so different and the concept is amazing and to be able to be a part of it is amazing. >> rico was there a challenge at all? >> at first whenever they had told us how we're going to do it holding the cameras, we're not going to be holding the cameras but we will and just you know the whole thing about iphones, you know it was kind of mind-boggling at first but we all got the hang of it pretty fast. >> you guys are shooting i'm assuming separately. have you seen it put together and what did you think of it? >> yeah we -- last week we all -- all the cast and crew and screened it and i -- it was pretty amazing episode. i got lost in the story even though i knew exactly what was going to happen but i just got -- all the moving parts, whoo this is crazy. >> do you think this is going to catch on?
