When folks get polled on a head to head if donald trump should be the republican nominee again, he wins and he wins decisively. President biden is stronger and the former president is weaker. Hes been indicted. I look at what we have gotten done with President Biden at the white house on infrastructure, manufacturing and it is a great record to run on. The president says watch me and some of those people have watched him and still have doubts. What would you say to them about those stumbles and about rambling sometimes. Martha, compare him to the alternatives and recognize the value of experience and seasoning, recognize that his values align better with where we want america to go and in my meetings and conversations with him and public and private, i am more often the person that goes um you know, the new senator from missouri than he does. Hes fit and capable to another term. What was this Campaign Like . The last one during covid and he didnt have to go out a lot. How will he handle this in a general Election Debate . Joe biden loves campaigning and he loves going to a coffee shop or a union hall or a fire station. I have seen no one in politics in my time whos more energized by connecting with voters than joe biden. His campaigns are not generated rallies with playing with his name behind him. He frankly complained in 2020 that he didnt like being disconnected from folks on the day of his inauguration. The fact that nobody there because of the pandemic made him feel like i want to get out to connect. Hes been doing that as president and will be doing that as our canned nate. Well, the Vice President like many Vice President has struggled to get positive press coverage and get the credits she deserves for the hard work shes been doing. I had a great opportunity with her recent trip to ghana and how engaged she was and the significant meetings with national leaders. I saw this week as we did a Campaign Kickoff campaign. The Vice President is ready to run and ready to be president if that should ever happen. I know our president has great confidence in her and so do i. I want to turn to the debt ceiling. 1. 5 trillion, of course, a key part of President Bidens agenda. What should the senate be doing now . He says he wants a clean debt bill. Martha, you know what the consequences would be to you and your viewers if we were to default. The republicans are demanding hostage negotiations will theyll crash the full face and credit the united states. Thatll raise the rates viewers are paying on credit cards and Student Loans and mortgages. It will hurt us globally. President biden will meet with Speaker Mccarthy of the things we should be discussing. The annual spending and appropriations. He wants no spending cuts. He reduced the deficits by 1. 7 trillion. His predecessor ballooned the deficit with record lets go forward, what do you want to do then . Look at what just passed in the house . We passed landmark legislation to fund the healthcare for burn pit victims. They cut that. If you apply the cuts across program they are talking about. 30,000 states and local Law Enforcement officers would be laid off. You would let us default our debt. No. Before any spending cuts sns no, i would be happy to negotiate, whats the mix of revenue increases and spending cuts that made sense going forward. You heard what rick was reporting and the bill republicans passed on the debt ceiling and you heard what senator coons had to say, he compared it to hostage negotiation. Whats your reaction . Well, martha, good morning, good to be with you. Most americans recognized that as we are addressing the debt limit, we have to address the problem that got us here. President biden maxed out americas credit card by spending trillions of dollars over the last two years. What republicans said is we are willing to work with the president on addressing that but lets address on the spending that got us here, too. What we put on the bill is basic common things. Lets have some work requirements for ablebody people who wants to get welfare benefits, should they be looking for work when everybody is looking for workers. You got millions of people being paid not to work. We talk about protecting veterans and we heard this over and over, we are protecting veterans. My boss, the chairman of value Affairs Committee is a veteran himself. The only person that talks about cutting Veterans Benefits is joe biden. I will not bring a bill thatll cut our veterans. The president does not want to talk about whats in the bill. We do things like reclaim and unspent covid19 money. There is tens of billions of dollars floating around for covid when President Biden said covid is over. Why dont we give that money back to the taxpayers. Pro growth policies to cut red tape to help americans with things like inflation and energy cost that are out of control. So, bottom line if the u. S. Defaulted on its debt, if this does go down to the wire, are you willing to let the u. S. Default rather than sign to a clean bill . We just passed a bill that addresses the debt ceiling. For all that we hear from our senate friends, martha, they have yet to pass anything. If they got a better idea, i want to see that bill and tell them to pass it through the senate. We passed the bill through the house and we have been vocal. It is been over two months since President Biden sat down with Speaker Mccarthy. Hes trying to run out the clock and create a debt crisis. Thats irresponsible. Republicans said the president is going to set this one out. We are not going to leave. It is time for the president to get in this game and get off the sidelines and lets start negotiating and not in june when we get into the midnight hours but today. We cant wait another two months. You have little time, you brought up kevin mccarthy. I want to ask you of your relationship with Speaker Mccarthy. You have been number two since 2014, reports suggest that there are some friction there. The New York Times reported that mccarthy feels he cant rely on you that you are in e effective and reluctant on taking on an issue on anything, your response . I guess they didnt follow last week, the speaker and i talked multiple times a day in the last few days leading up to the debt ceiling voting. How would you describe your relationship because in New York Times, that was based on interviews with direct knowledge of mccarthys private comment. Describe your relationship with mccarthy, please . We have a strongopen relationship. We dont agree on everything but we have a candid relationship. We have been focused on working through an agenda that gets the economy back on track. Is this the way to beat donald trump if donald trump is the nominee . Joe biden is operating as if donald trump is the nominee. When you have americans do not want to see joe biden running. This is a potential rematch for 2024 that nobody wants to see. Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, age is going to be a factor in this campaign. Guess what, donald trump is no Spring Chicken either. This is something that both candidates are going to have deal with through their primaries and President Biden in the general election. And i suppose you would agree about all of you, age is clearly an issue. It is. You heard those especially with young voters talking about that. The rollout was pretty low key. It was. It was video and later in the day, the president addressed kind of the legislative accomplishments that he achi achieved. I kind of see from the white houses standpoint you hear them focuses on two visions of this broad idea of freedom, protecting freedom of abortion rights with the situation in the Supreme Court and the other factor is promoting his legislative accomplishments. It is difficult for the white house to ignore the president s Approval Ratings are underwater. They have been underwater for more than a year ever since the withdraw from afghanistan. Very difficult for a president to have those Approval Ratings but this is not normal times. Jonathan, he had the same Approval Ratings before the midterm. This is different. Precisely of what happens in the midterms, the biden folks had the same strategy for his reelection which is make the focus on them and not us. It is hard to recall a modern political history, a sitting president whos so eager to turn his attention away from him and his office towards the opposition. Thats the story repeatedly by this president and his administration. I get the politics. For them, it makes more sense to point to donald trump than lets talk about them because his numbers are terrible, in fact. So, i get the politics of it. It is remarkable that he puts out a video and gives a speech that nobody pays attention to later that day. Thats the entirety of his reelection for a sitting president . Thats what we are in here. It is going to be a Rose Garden Campaign to put it mildly. The idea sort of him engaging of the campaign is never going to happen. Hes going to be lowkey avoid the press and trying to keep it on the gop. Their thought is if it aint broke, dont fix it. Those numbers are problematic. A lot of folks who dont want. If the nominees not trump then i think the calculation starts to change a little bit. Donna, let me ask you about that, you say hes going to be out there campaigning the end of my peace. The young voters who said get me out of bed, joe. Do something to make me want to go to the polls. What does he do about that . You hear chris coons talking and all the surrogates saying this. People have been watching him, and they are not sure. Well, first of all, let me just quote the chair, the Republican Party and something i rarely do. She says, focusing on joe bidens age is not going to be a winning issue. Joe biden just received a very good report from his doctor about his overall health. So, thats important. She seems to have a sense of credibility on that issue, a sense of legitimacy more than the president has. Shes more comfortable on speaking that issue. You talk about trump is older but biden is also older. Policies never matter. Probably always true until we get to abortion. I have not seen an issue on any elections that galvanize the public this way. I think republicans will face challenge if they cant figure out how to deal where the public is. Will, you want to go on that one . Republicans dont want to talk about it. Sure, policies does matter. I think whats what people see. Why do we only have 23 of the country voting in primaries . The roast rest country is like we dont care what these jokers are doing. I dont care if you are in a ruby red town or a deep blue city. You care about putting food on your table and taking care of your loved ones. As we talk about those issues, we have an opportunity, but if you are doing things Like Fighting businesses and trying to curb Economic Advancement and using the power of the government to stop businesses from operating, you will have a big problem. Shes someone whos really spent a lot of time on maternal healthcare on climate, she spent a lot of time traveling across this country, talking about Voting Rights and going across the globe and talking about investing in americas future. Shes going to be a strong government partner and a true asset to this candidate. Her numbers are terrible and thats why the biden folks know they have to build her up. They know the attacks coming is not just for him. It is a vote for joe biden and a vote for kamala harris. Thats the urgency the biden folks are trying to help her build up some. We have a legal system dominated by a lot of conservative jurors who would not let that Program Going forward. We knew it would put more farmers in peril. I want to see usda get the farmers relief that we passed through legislation. It is taking entirely too long. Another planting season has come and gone. The usda is not tracking loan recipients by race and making it difficult to see the impact. Why not put the data out there and be transparent, release it by race at some point. We have decided to focus on following the mandate of the law. Right now we are focused on implementing it and getting people back farming, and participating in program as fully as they can.
