A followup to a story we told but last night. Today the city of richmond made good on its promise to sue oil giant chevron. San ramon bay chevron earns 280 billion a year. Now richmond wants some of the cash to pay for the response to the actual emergency and the aftermath of last years refinery fire. The city file a 39 page complaint claiming the fire was not a frequent accident but the result of chevrons disregard for public safety. The suit also claims chevron knew about the dangerous conditions of its pipes and did nothing to prevent the failure. The purpose of the lawsuit has never been about money. The purpose of the lawsuit is changing corporate culture. We want to see the highest standards of safety put forward. Now chevron calls the lawsuit meritless. They issued a statement reading in part, the baseless allegations against chevron usa are plainly intended to divert attention away from a dysfunctional city council. More safety tests for the new span of the bay bridge. Caltrans engineers are testing about 2 dozen steel rods to determine if theyre faulty. The test stretched the rods and exposed them to salt water to recreate years of exposure to the elements. It followed the discovery of dozens of fawley bolts on that new span of the bridge. In june the Lower Court Ordered the inmates released. Today the Supreme Court upheld that decision. The concern is that our state prisons are overcrowded and pose a health risk to inmates. Governor brown said that releasing that many convicted criminals by the end of this year jeopardizes public safety. The state is already working on backup plans including out of state contracts to house the overflow inmates. It just needs funding.
