Three correctional deputies are on administrative leave after an inmate died in his cell almost one week ago. The question now is was this accidental or intentional . We obtained a Court Document yesterday and it lists as the victim the nigh of michael tyree. Sources tell us he was badly beaten in his jail cell on the sic floor. Several sources also tell our Investigative Units, he had lacerations to his liver and his spleen. That information comes as the coroner waits to release the auch reports. He was waiting to be transferred at a bed at momentum crisis residential treatment center. He did not have a cell mate and last wednesday just after midnight sources tell us some sort of the argument ensued inside his cell. On friday, the Sheriffs Office said what he has been saying and repeating all week that the guards found tyree unresponsive in that cell and called for help. They noticed the person was not responding to them, knocks on the door. They went in and rendered aid. Fire and paramedics were called. Not much information has come out from any agency, but were aware the sheriff, the county council and other county leaders are being kept up to date on the progress of this investigation. Our Investigative Unit also contacted tyrees sister out of state, but she did not want to comment at this time. Thank you very much, damian. We could finally learn when the man accused of killing teenage yeah sierra lamar will face trial. Lamar disappeared more than three years ago while walking to a school bus stop. Her body husband never been found. Prosecutors say her dna was discovered in garcia torress car. Hes pleaded not guilty and has awa awaited trial for three years. A perspective male model was meeting with this man to discuss some modeling work. The victim says francisco grabbed him inappropriately. He has been arrested now and faces Sexual Battery charges. This happened last week, but now investigators are asking if there are any other victims for them to come forward. Another sexual attack to tell you about. This one at uc berkeleys library. This morning, Campus Police are tight lipped about the details but they will say that just before 1 00 yesterday morning, a 20yearold Woman Told Police she was groped. Police have not revealed exactly where it happened at the library and they have not given a description of the suspect. Yesterday morning we know a woman is now home safe. Police say she contacted investigators about her apparent abduction. Witnesses reported seeing a man grab her and throw her into a trunk of a car monday night. Shes since told police shes fine. She was involved in a domestic dispute at the time. West oakland b. A. R. T. Station is up and running at this hour. Closed sfr more than three hours overnight after a man shot himself reportedly while trying to draw that gun on police officers. This video was taken by a witness that shows a suspect right after he apparently accidentally shot himself. B. A. R. T. Officers say they approached the man because she was snoeking, which is against the rules. He reportedly threatened to jump on the track but reached for a gun in his waistband and officers tazed him. Officers say he accidentally shot himself in the stomach. Hes in the hospital in Critical Condition. And more questions this morning following santa clara countys release of a video showing an explosion at Valley Medical Centers construction site. We have learned that explosive incident youre about to see was not reported to cal osha, the state agency that overseas work place safety. Now as you saw in that video, when that steam pipe exploded last year, there was a worker inside trying to climb out. The county categorizes the accident as a, quote, serious nearly fatal accident. But a spokesperson tells us on that day paramedics determined that the worker was not injured and he returned to work that very day. Because there was no catastrophic injury, nor hospitalization, turner was not required to notify cal osha. A digital team found out that the worker has since filed a Workers Compensation claim related to post traumatic stress. The county released a yearold video showing one of the reasons why turner should be fired from the job. But state your name turner says this is all a publicity stunt. More than 5,000 People Living on the streets in santa clara county, supervisors are going to consider spending more than 26 million to help out on that problem. One calls for turning the Old Plaza Hotel in downtown san jose into transitional housing for the homeless. And thats not all. Nbc has another proposal which involves car camping. This parking lot at Camden Avenue is empty now, but the county is considering establishing a Pilot Safe Parking Program where Homeless People can park, stay in their vehicles and have access to showers and other facilitate i tos. The county supervisors will also consider turning the Old Plaza Hotel near the Greyhound Bus station in downtown san jose into transitional housing for the homeless. He fears, it will bring more homeless to the streets and scare customers away. It will affect our economy and our business for sure spp. That location i think is a pretty strong location for that kind of facility. The fact of the matter is for years and years, it was an unofficial homeless shelter and, you know, if the government is involved but we do the job right, it could be a very safe, secure, sanitary facility. The goal is not just to offer the homeless a roof over their heads, but access to services so they can one day secure permanent homes. Nbc bay area news. Heres a story. Unconsciousing dragged down the street, pulled by her own leash by her own owner. What would have anyone make somebody treat a pet like that . Yeah, thats what vets are asking themselves after saving a young pit bulls life. And now that owner is facing animal cruelty charges. Nbc bay areas Michelle Roberts shows us how that dog was rescued. I think its disgusting. Its very upsetting. Reporter many people in sunnyvale are disturbed to hear the allegation against 34yearold manual hovian. His dog was rushed to a vet clinic in Critical Condition on friday after someone called 911. Police say he was walking along lawrence expressway in sunnyvale dragging aun unconscious pit bull on the sidewalk by a leash around her neck. She had abrasions all over her body from being drug. Super, super dehydrated. Dr. Ken sawyer was the first vet to treat the pup. He didnt know her name but said she was barely alive. To have to be that dehydrated, he would have had to work her for a long time without getting any drink or rest. Reporter he was able to stabilize her before transferring her to another hospital for more care. The man is facing felony animal cruelty charges. Its a loss of the appreciation for life. Thousands of gallons of flammable crude barrelling through town within a mile of some childrens schools. It is happening on tracks and counties all across the bay area. Oil being transported on trains that run right by campuses. The question, is it safe . We have more on a new report released. Take a look at this map. It shows train tracks running through solano, contracosta and also media counties. The oranges are within a mile of the tracks, the red, within half a mile. The in um ber of children who go to school within one mile of current oil train routes, staggering. The mile is the size of the evacuation zone for multiple oil train derailments like this one in West Virginia in 2013. Now there are plans to increase train traffic in the bay area to feed patriot posed oil depot in san obispo. One of the oil is in north dakota, which has proven to be highly explosive. And thats in Northern California in the bay area, thats been the primary type of crude that weve seen. The association said spending 30 billion alone on top to bottom recreational views, increasing track inspections and the use of track side Safety Technology and stepping up outreach and training for responders and communities. It wont be a question of when an accident will happen, its a question of when. Sadness has turned to angry for the one family. They failed our sister. An undocumented immigrant with a checkered history is a prime suspect. Guns stolen from officers are a widespread problem. We have more on that part of the story. The gun was stolen or taken in clear violation. A ranger on assignment in San Francisco broke the rules when he left his gun in his car. A gun is required to be unloaded and locked up, but attorneys say the loaded gun was left in a bag and stolen. If the gun actually was placed in a backpack and that backpack was in plain view. The chief of police at uc berkeley had her gun stolen at point isabel in richmond when she left it in a bag in her car while on a run. Her father says its a dangerous trend. Is there no protocol . Do they not care . Or are we out of control here . I think its a little bit of everything. Police departments face a challenge. San Francisco Police say in the last five years, nine officers. Each agency is different. In the wake of high profile thefts and violence, there should be clarity. If theres a rash of incidents. Police officers are still on the run today. Local faces are fanning out from that area where the lieutenant was killed. They vow they will look around the clock. The nature of the search seeps to have shifted. Theyve given up on the focus search around the twosquare mille area where the body was found. Instead theyre focusing on what they call saturation patrols. To reassure residents theyre still out there looking for these three suspected cop killers. This is not only a community on edge, its a community in morning. Hes an all around caring person. The kids loved him when they came down the street. They loved it. And sometimes he would buy them an ice cream. The lieutenant was a father of four sons including one in the military. They were interested in becoming Law Enforcement officers themselves. He had been on the force for more than 30 years and talked about retiring at the end of last month. Bayar matooan likt 70 years after emotional rules, and a bay area man took an unlikely trip to japan hoping to heal some of those. Today marks 70 year since the United States official victory over dia pa when tjapan was the was signed. George hen kins was serving in a british navy, manning a gun aboard an Aircraft Carrier when a kamikaze pilot flew right into him. Both henkins and the pilot were killed. George was the only one that died, but he saved the lives of his gun crew. He would never meet his grand father, and henkins dad was just 4 months old when it happened. I missed having a grandfather. My father certainly missed having a father. Reporter last month, japanese media covered the henkins story as part of their coverage on the 70year anniversary, but also found the brother of that kamikaze pilot, still alive today. It certainly made everything real. Reporter the two families agreed to meet. And last week, the hinkins traveled to dia opinijapan. We sensed this energy and expectation was in the air that something momentous was going to happen. In central tokyo in a mansion, they came together to share stories and photos of who they lost and the pain both felt for generations. Regardless of which side of the war they were on, those two men, they sacrificed their lives to defend their countries. Henkins documented the meet, the experience, the moment, two families torn by war were connected by fate once again. Just ability to reach out your hand and shake the hand of the brother of the pilot, it connected me to my grandfather. 70 years just vanished, and i felt for a moment that i connected to that time that he existed. Ian cole, nbc bay area news. Wow. They even look alike. The city of pleasanton is fighting the drought with a new set of pipes. Thats right, ten miles of purple pipes are going into the ground. And soon they will deliver recycled water to the city. Were in pleasanton with more on the purple pipe project. Line lawns here are dry and brown as they are in much of the bay area, but theres a plan here to turn things around. Green may be making a comeback, thanks to the color purple. Its great that were starting this project. Reporter its the biggest pipeline project in the city of pleasantons history. Work began today on whats being called the purple pipeline project. Workers are installing purplecolored pipes throughout much of the city that will soon pump 450 million gallons of recycled water a year to some of pleasantons biggest water users. Using more recycled water is a great way to bre serve a precious recourse. The ken mercer sports park and all of its sports fields will be the first to go online, followed by the hacienda business park. The city estimates the project will save 10 of pleasantons drinking water. Save a lot of money, but more importantly, save a lot of water. Reporter in this time of drought, the city says recycled water is the way to go. While brown has become the new green, the purple pipes will soon pump in what it takes to brighten up the landscape once again. Purple is the new green. And so were really excited about this project. Now if all goes as planned, this lawn will be getting all the water it needs to make it happy and green by this time next year. In pleasanton, im jody hernandez, nbc bay area news. Its good to see were doing these things. We should do more. We should have done some of these things a long time ago. My sister is in austin, texas, and they were in a severe drought as we were. Then they got torrential rain. And their city council said maybe we can ease up on the restrictions . Lets not. I think we should do the same thing here. Lets find out if we have the possibility of any rain ahead. Im hoping i can get some of that for my yard. With esee all the sun shooip, but at least the temperatures are nice aechb comfortable. We bring in a cool breeze under all that warm sunshine. And the high today will be up to 74 degrees in the east bay.
