Steph, you were on that train this morning. It seemed smooth, so whats next. Reporter yeah, that is the big question, scott and kris. Were at the fremont stop and this is that stretch where the derailment happened monday night. Commuters should expect delays tonight as they go home because trains are going slower for safety, but one question has been will Union Pacific install any sort of land or mudslide detectors after this. Right now the answer is not likely. After one day offline, ace trains are back in service. We boarded train number one, the first in the morning to check in with regular riders who echoed the same feelings. I can understand how that happened. Accidents happen once in a while. Reporter conductors are slowing the speed to 10 miles an hour through the stretch, the 40mileperhour zone, where track inspectors are monitoring activity. Longtime passenger fred barnes rides almost daily. Hes hoping theres added attention to the area where the mudslide derail edmonds train. Ive got through there at 4 00 in the morning going to work and there have been rocks on the street from rock slides. Reporter Union Pacific owns the tracks and is leading the investigation. Spokesman Francisco Castillo said a weather team sent track inspectors to check that very stretch around 5 00 monday morning. Everything looked fine. Union pacific is looking at the possibility of installing slide detector fences, but will probably pass because, castillo says, there hasnt been a landslide there in at least 20 years. I think they keep it pretty clear most of the time. Ive been riding about a year and havent had any other issues like that before. I think theyre going to take a sharper look at it because its going to need to be addressed, even though weve been in a drought for years now. We get a couple big rainstorms like this and things are going to move. Reporter i also understand and learned this morning that Union Pacific has a geotechnical Consulting Engineer on site thats still on site to help determine how that mudslide led to the derailment and the best path forward. No timeline on whats going to come out of what he has to say. City perhaps no one will enjoy that break from the rain more than those folks. But we do have more wet stuff headed our way. Our live satellite radar shows a strengthening storm thats coming up off the coastline. Looking live at the Golden Gate Bridge, you can see clouds hanging around. Meteorologist rob mayeda joins us now. Rob, series of storms headed our way. It sounds like were a broken record here. And we may be breaking records for rainfall as we head towards friday and the weekend. Right now really a clash of two different weather patterns. San jose in the mid60s and may get close to 70s in parts of the south bay. Different stories you just saw. Across the Golden Gate Bridge youve got your drizzle storm under way, 59 degrees and rain continues to fall mostly in the north bay. As you head through the afternoon youll see light rain lift on off to the north bay as High Pressure temporarily builds in but you can see all this moisture offshore. The pattern that is setting up as we get into thursday, we saw it this past weekend where that atmosphere and river connecticut back to hawaii connects to the bay area. Well see strong winds and the potential for very heavy rain, especially thursday and friday. For the north bay localized flooding is an issue and sierra snow 2 to 3 feet. All this rain coming down is now starting to cause the larger rivers to react. Here is the forecast stage for guerneville as we approach the weekend. Very close to flood stage, which is 32 feet. Now that the ground is saturated and the river is off to a higher start as more rain comes in, you can still be watching these very closely for thursday into friday in the north bay and into the weekend. Well let you know how much longer this rainy pattern will stick around and how much rain you can expect in your neighborhood coming up in a few minutes. A tree fell on four cars near San Francisco community college. You can see the damage there. Crews working on cleaning that up. Nobody hurt. No word on what caused that tree to come down but as we all know weather is most likely the factor. Stay ahead of the storms with our nbc bay area app. Its a great resource to know when the rain is going to hit. I use it right around pickup time at school. Its free to iphones and Android Devices. It has happened again, raw sewage going back into peoples homes on the peninsula. This started saturday because of recent rains. Crews on the scene are trying to work on a solution. This is in millbrae. Bob redell is live in the neighborhood. Bob, are people out of their homes this afternoon . Reporter kris and scott, we know of at least two families who have moved into hotels, including the chens who live in this home right here behind me. It was their home that flooded again with raw sewage overnight because of a clogged sewer line. You can see right now the city is trying to fix. How. Hell can we flood twice . I was like i think i think i dont think it can get any worse. Reporter thats a very frustrated jason chen showing us the cleanup a restoration had to do in his house for a second time this week after feces and other debris started pouring from his toilet overnight. He and at least one other homeowner are point their fingers at a Company Called sewer rat for this problem. That contractor has been replacing a sewer pipe connection for one of chens neighbors. The city suspects during this job workers for that Company Allegedly left part of the sewer line improperly sealed. This weekends rains were able to push base rocks into the sewer main. As a result, the main clogged, forcing raw sewage to back up into several homes for several hours on saturday. Im very upset, but what i cant do anything now. Just deal with it, fix it and then deal with it later. Reporter who do you blame . Well, i think sewer rat sewer rat is all to blame. Obviously the drain route is not supposed to be in the sewer line. This has been happening for almost five days and its very emotional and nobody is helping us and i dont have a lawyer right now. Im trying to find someone really good. Thats it. Reporter that was jasons neighbor, who allowed us to accompany a Restoration Company into his home this morning. He believes his house of eight years is going to need to be torn down after the flooding this weekend but he tells us his Insurance Company is refusing to pay, hence the reason hes looking for a lawyer. We did speak with the interim public works head of the Public Works Department here in millbrae this morning. He sympathizes with these homeowners. Hes asking them to file a claim to the city. We also reached out to sewer rat, but so far no comment from that contractor. Again, back out here live, you can see the city has hired a crew to replace those sewer lines because its so hard to dislodge the rocks, so replacing the lines is so far their only option. Reporting live here in millbrae, bob redell, nbc bay area news. Bob, thank you. A developing story, a quiet seattle, washington, neighborhood was rocked overnight by a massive explosion. A lot of business up and down the street that had their windows blown out but thats only minor damage in comparison to what could have happened. Reporter its a very extensive scene, roads are closed down for blocks. Of those firefighters that went to the hospital, two of them have been released. Thats a nice little perk but i think people should also just grow up about breastfeeding and keep walking if you dont like it. Gosh, rob, what do you think . Ill leave that to my life to deal with the twins, those kids 5 months old. We have a handful at home. Back to february it was a lousy month for rainfall. We had 11 , 42 of average. Contrast that just to the fist nine days of this month and look at those rain totals. For san jose, were already at 138 of average for the month of march and theres a lot more coming in the forecast right now. This is good news. If you look at the drought of september 23rd, theres been an improved here on the north bay coast and santa cruz mountains. You can see the severity of the drought at least for the bay area has come down from september to right now but the same story not shared from Central California to Southern California. Virtually unchanged in this very strong el nino year. Central california and Southern California really missing out on the rain Northern California has seen the last couple of months. Right now we have kind of a northsouth divide of our own weather. You can see some rain around San Francisco and the north bay. Whats left of that light rain should move north of San Francisco. Mainly light to moderate rain for the north bay for the rest of the day. Look at san jose, upper 60s, maybe even close to 70 in reach today. Low 60s around San Francisco. Still dodging some raindrops as you move further north. Mid60s around the trivalley. So the next three days, main event number one comes in tomorrow morning for the north bay. Watch how that rain line hangs up over San Francisco and weakens into san jose. Heaviest rain for the end of the week will come friday morning. Bay areawide a lot of wind and rain with this system that should clear out friday evening. In the weekend even more rain is in the forecast. So the next three days looks very soggy, especially thursday into friday. The sierra will see snow levels close to 5,000 feet. San francisco and the peninsula starting to see the heaviest rain, probably more so for thursday night and friday. For the south bay at least where thursday is concerned, a lot of that heavier rain will stay off to the north. San jose will probably have to wait a little while to see that heavier rain arrive. Friday looks to be pretty busy. Saturday a few showers. That is the brief break before another strong storm comes in on sunday. So as you add up all this rain coming in over the next few days and look at the north bay, youre seeing 3 to 5 inches of rain. This is the reason why the creeks and streams here in sonoma county, marin county and napa county will have to watch this bullseye of rain for the north bay. So the trend that were seeing right now is quite active as High Pressure is nowhere to be found. Its allowing all these storms to come on through. Very interesting as we head to next week, you can see a drying trend trying to take shape right around this time next week. Well let you know just how long you can expect that dry weather to last and the outlast for the rest of the march coming up in the longrange forecast. A very colorful map you have, rob. Up next at 11 00, we have the first results of the khan Academy Learn storm. Tens of thousands of bay area kids are participating in the math challenge and we know whos on top. Well show you that and tell you how your kids can still get in on it. Last week google admitted that its selfdriving car was the cause of a crash back in february. Now were watching it happen. The video and a link to the story right on our twitter feed. And trending on facebook, 19 dogs rescued from horrible conditions, saved from a uhaul truck. Those pups had not been clean in at least a week and many of them are looking for new homes. You can find that on facebook. Tens of thousands of bay ea stu tens of thousands of bay area students are in the middle of a learn storm, a challenge designed by the bay area Nonprofit Khan Academy aims to help students master the math skills they need for a successful future. This reinforces the common core math skills kids need to learn while also teaching the students that when they feel like saying i cant, they say i cant yet. Its that one small detail that has one small napa school up on top. Phillips elementary is celebrating a first place finish in the learn storm, a nineweek online math challenge that celebrates both mastery and hustle. When you do great work and you work really hard and you meet with success, the world notices. 65 of phillips students are still learning english and 82 of families are socioeconomically challenged, but determination pushed students to the top of the leaderboard. My heart started beating really fast and all of a sudden i heard my name. The students who are taking on the challenge of trying a new skill. Third through 12th grade students work on the learn storm challenge anywhere they can get online. The Nonprofit Khan Academy designed learn storm to meet students where they are, reinforce what they know and introduce the next concept when theyre ready. With one win under their belts, these kids are ready to keep hustling. I want to keep on going until we get the second cup. Trust me action hes very excited. You can see Phillips Academy was at the top of the leaderboard. They were followed by newark junior high school, also a Bay Area Technology school, and then theres the mastery list and those are the kids that mastered it. Phillips, that little school, was also on that list. Good for them. Thats fantastic. So the challenge continues through april 1st. If your kids are interested or your school is interested, there is still time to get involved and you can find out how on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. You can find the full list of those winners as well. And we conned khan academy into letting us have the next cup winners exclusively next week. So well have those on tuesday. Thats fantastic. Making up a dry february, its much needed help for our drought. Rob mayeda is tracking the next batch of storms. Rob, what have we got . Weve got a contrast of styles right now. San jose youve got sunshine, 64 degrees, may get close to 70 later on. Right now speaking of storms, drizzle storm in San Francisco. Youre looking at light rain, 59 degrees. Well probably hang on to the raindrops for the north bay in the afternoon. Whats very interesting here on the satellite is the plume of moisture which is not just off our coast, it actually stretches all the way down to the hawaiian islands. Its made that subtropical connection. We sometimes refer to as an Atmospheric River which helps to really boost the rainfall rates. That very moist air slams into the coastal mountains and is forced to rise up because of heavy rain rates per hour and all of this is aiming in on the north bay starting tomorrow morning which means well see periods of intense rain at times like we had this weekend. Also gusty winds to contend with friday and the weekend and the sierra will get a healthy amount of snow, at least 2 to 3 feet. As all this rain begins to add up on top of saturated soil and rivers and creeks that are already running pretty high, even the larger rivers now were having to watch out for river levels on the rise as we head into the weekend. Well have a full look at how much rain to expect examining up in our forecast. A break between storms is giving everyone plenty of time to make sure things are flowing smoothly when the next round of rain arrives. Vta crews are working to clean out branches and debris around the light rail tracks. One line of work is getting a lot of business these days. Those rain gutter cleaners, they are booked solid. For them rainfall is a windfall with some businesses in some cases tripling. You find the lowest spot and it starts eating away at the foundation and that causes major problems. If you think californias Drought Conditions have evaporated, guess again. The santa clara Water District says this has been a good winter but not a great winter and that everyone should continue their conservation efforts. Now the forecast for the upcoming salmon season also looking dismal. Joe rosato jr. Takes us north where the efforts are under way to save a disappearing run of salmon. Reporter if theres one thing that gets fish lovers and fishermen excited, its the opening of the commercial salmon season in may. But the impact of several years drought has taken a toll on these fish and put this Upcoming Season in jeopardy. Even worse, biologists have seen a drastic decline in winter run s salmon in the sacramento river. It could mean the demise of the salmon. Reporter because a dam near the town of redding marks the end, its also where things begin. The dam is part of an effort to try and save the winter run chinook from extinction. Reporter although fishermen are allowed to catch fall run fish, regulators will restrict the season based on the winter run salmon. The smaller the winter run gets, the less time and area out on the ocean the commercial fleet is allowed to fish. Reporter for the hatchery manager, the survival of these fish is personal. Today in the truck we saw a few fish come back that i raised myself. Reporter with this years survival rate estimated at a dismal 3 , the effort to save these fish has become an upstream battle. Joe rosato jr. , nbc bay area news. He looked a little angry about his trip there. Up the elevator and then swoosh. We might be going swoosh in the coming days. We are expecting a deluge, rob mayeda. The north bay will get a lot of rain. Right now san jose has sunshine and its going to be an interesting day. The south bay has a chance of getting temperatures close to 70 degrees. Already 64 right now in san jose and the rain has let up around the trivalley, at least in dublin, 59 degrees, but still mist and light rain over San Francisco. San francisco northward heading into the afternoon i think well see light rain at times. Over the Peninsula Hill tops and over into the north bay as we see light rain ahead of a much stronger system due in during the day tomorrow. Highs today upper 60s to near 70 in the south bay, still a few sprinkles possible around the peninsula, including obviously San Francisco with highs in the low 60s. For the north bay off and on showers into the evening. North bay temperatures in the mid60s. So over the next few days were going to see opportunities for heavier rain coming down and its because of this rainfall boost that is setting up offshore. Not just a storm but a storm with subtropical moisture extending out to hawaii. We saw this coming together last thursday. Well see those upper level winds very favorable for high rain rates per hour and a lot of snow in the sierra. So compare the type of rain were seeing today just a little bit to the north bay of as that Atmospheric River starts to point to the north bay during the day tomorrow, look how high those rain rates are and the rain in the north bay over an inch. San jose missing out, at least through thursday. Things will change by thursday night on into friday so over the next few days, north bay getting a lot as we head into tomorrow morning and showers for the south bay. Thursdays system not really the big rain producer for the south bay and the santa cruz mountains. Its fridays system that comes on in. Friday a lot of wind and a lot of rain for the morning and a brief break friday evening into perhaps early saturday and another storm comes in on sunday. So the north bay will see the most out of this pattern. Thats prolonged patterns thursday into friday. San francisco south not as much. Friday everybody sees a pretty good storm. Saturday we catch a bit of a break but sunday another strong storm system with a lot of rain. That will be sunday afternoon on into monday. So the pattern as it looks right now stormy all the way through monday. Once we get past that monday storm, High Pressure will return, something we havent seen in a while. It looks like five days of dry weather from next monday afternoon through about friday. And the longrange forecast, which has been very favorable for us, putting this bullseye for above average rainfall, at least holding on to that pattern through the 16th. Longrange forecast towards the end of the month will continue to bring less chances of rain as we head toward the third week of march. All right, rob, thanks. A team without a home.
