We will continue to discuss with tsa our Airport Security program. Reporter granted it is a miracle that the teen survived. Paramedics treated him after climbing out of the wheel well of this jet. Passengers are shaken by the story of this stow away. Anybody could do that and get on the airplane and that security breach. Reporter and that concern is justified says security expert steve elson. This kid wasnt sneaky, just walked over and got in the well. Reporter should it be that easy . It sounds like a simple question. Thats a rhetorical question, hell, no. Shouldnt be easy at all. Reporter neither the fbi or the police have filed any charges against the boy who will be sent home to santa clara soon where hess family is keeping quiet about the whole thing. The boys sister did talk to us off camera earlier today, but all she really said was that her brother was doing fine. She also didnt really seem to understand full gravity of what had happened here and the charges that her brother could face. But im sure that family will be just happy to have him back soon. And i wilhawaii child and famil services are working on having that happen soon. Considering the conditions, it is estimated the plane was flying near 38,000 feet. Compare that to the height of mt. Everest at 29,000 feet. The worlds tallest mountain. The air in that wheel well would have been thinner. Between 1947 and 2014, 105 people have stowed away around the world. Of those, only 25 people have survived. And that includes the santa clara boy from yesterdays incident. The last time Something Like this happened was in february. At dulles, police found a mans body in the wheel well of this South African flight that originated in johannesburg. It made a stop in senegal before landing in washington, d. C. It would have been nearly impossible to survive in one of those wheel wells. How could it have happened . Cheryl hurd is live with reaction from a pilot and doctor both of which are stunned that the teenager lived if it did happen . Reporter thats right. Experts say all the cards were stacked against that 15 year old boy. And if he did hideaway on that Hawaiian Airlines plane like he said he did, experts say they cant believe how he survived. Its plain to me that somebody got in a wheel well and went 35,000 feet. I would say they swropt survived. Reporter the impossible turned out to be possible last night when this 15yearold walked out onto the tarmac after stowing away in the wheel well on a flight from san jose to maui. Pilot bob hill is not a commercial pilot but flies vintage planes like the memphis belle. The gravity holds the air to the surface. You got all of the wait above you pressing down. Theres no pressure to place the oxygen thats available into your lungs. Thats the problem. Reporter a medical director agrees. I think he just wanted to a very low metabolic rate. Reporter not knowing exactly what happened on that plane makes it tough to guess how he apparently survived the five and a half hour flight. Id say that he was probably unconscious for most of the flight. Once he got that high and that cold he probably went into sustained state. Reporter they believe that the boy blacked out at 10,000 feet and they believe he stayed warm because of the planes landing gear. Reporting live in heyward, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. Were going to see a lateseason push for rainfall and snowfall. Midlevel clouds. Some rain evaporating before it hits the ground. But a sign that the frontal boundarys on approach. Were seeing more of that up towards the north barite now where its mostly cloudy with a few scattered showers. That is a huge temperature change from 24 hours ago. We have the clouds from most of today. The sea breeze doing a number on our temperatures. It is kind of windy out there right now. Oakland over to San Francisco. Youve got winds 15 to 20 Miles Per Hour. Youll see these winds accelerate a little bit towards 7 00 and 8 00 tonight and then back off slightly tomorrow. But theyre going to stay out of the northwest. And thats the reason why tomorrows temperatures are really going to feel fairly cool as well. Right now some light rain approaching santa rosa. You can see the progression of these bands. The most significant will be coming in right around 9 00 tonight through 3 00 in the morning. This is a fairly quick mover we think. It should be mainly overnight impact for the bay area as we continue to watch the clouds thicken up for this evening. There you see the rains coming in after midnight. Tomorrows commute could see some lingering showers especially around the south bay. Then as we head through the afternoon we get clearing skies. Northwest winds and cooler air aloft will keep our temperatures down in the upper 50s to low 60s phenomenon. Almost 20 degrees cooler than the temperatures we just saw on easter sunday. If we can just get. 003 inches. If we can manage that, its not just tonights system were watching. Theres another one to follow as we get into friday. And this is a system that will pack a bigger punch for the bay area. A little bit more moisture to work with as it drops in friday afternoon through friday evening and another snow system that should drop snow levels maybe close to 5,000 feet. Perhaps a few north bay showers at times for the weekend. But the rainfall projections look a little more healthy where the bay areas concerned. Should see rain totals at least getting close to a half inch. And higher totals north of sonoma county. And when we get this much moisture, we hope about 6 to 12 inches of snow above 6,000 feet for the sierra as we head into friday night and saturday. So around the bay area well see early showers, cooling and breezy. Its going to feel cool with the highs in the 60s. 80s on sunday, tomorrow youre looking at 60s. North bay locations also seeing highs in the low 60s. And in the tri valley out of thth the 70s, likely seeing 60s. The trend will be watching the friday system come on in. Short term after we lose the showers, a little bit of a bump up in the temperatures as you see in the sevenday forecast. But tomorrow looks to be the main event. Heading into tomorrow morning you could see chain controls. We could see one more winter storm warning before spring wraps up. Back to you. Thank you very much. Lets check in with gerard moncure.
