Do you think pg e has done enough now . We are working every day to make sure it never happens again. Nearly two years after snipers crippled the major power station, we investigate what theyve done to make sure it doesnt happen again. Up next, you will see the changes. Also a key ruling in the ellen powell discrimination case. And good evening, im your meteorologist. The storm track is super close right now, plus details on warming temperatures and when well reach 85 degrees. Many people believe it was a terrorist attack nearly two years has passed and yet no definitive answer on who shut down a pg e substation. They have made significant security improvements at that substation in south san jose. Tony, the change comes about six months after we exposed potential failures in security. Questions and pressures from that investigation. Now experts are telling us that part of the reason snipers succeeded was that the substation was an easy target. Little or no security and a clear line of sight. All that has changed, thanks to its part of 100 million in promised upgrades. Its the sight and sound of change a move to make this high Voltage Electric substation more resistant to an attack. John is the former chair of the federal Energy Regulatory commission. This is Security Camera video of the 19minute attack that destroyed 17 transformers costing 15 million in damage and concern that it was either an act of terrorism or potentially a trial run for future assaults on the nations power grid. It was a wakeup call for the entire industry. Local Law Enforcement never made suspects and no person or organization was publicly claimed responsibility. Pg e responded byomising to upgrade security at the facility and other critical substations throughout the state. Do you think theyve done enough now to prevent another attack . We are working every day to make sure it never happens again, tony. But there was a clear difference between what they were saying and what an nbc bay area investigation discovered last summer at substations in northern and central california. Is it still vulnerable to an attack today . Its vulnerable to the same kind of attack from a different angle. Hes asked us to protect his identity because he has two decades of military experience, including extensive training in special operations. He visited and analyzed security at many of the critical electric substations. Guys are trained like you, what could be done how long would it take . It could be repeated across all the sites you showed me in less than 15 minutes. And that became even more apparent last august. 16 months after the original attack vandals executed a Second Security breach at the substation. Cutting their way through perimeter fencing and stealing thousands of dollars in Construction Equipment all undetected by what pg e described as high level security. Now seven months later construction crews and heavy equipment are proof that they are spending money to increase the security at the substation. They deserve some credit here . Absolutely no question. They deserve credit from moving on this. A move that includes increased onsite security more Security Cameras, better lighting and concrete perimeter fencing that better protects the critical transformers. Transformers responsible for powering much of Silicon Valley. Theyre all upgrades that follow pressure from state and federal regulators. Theyre getting ahead of the game and those requirements and putting things in place that will protect those facilities. Now, pg e declined our request to talk about security upgrades in front of our cameras. Instead they released a statement that included safety and security of our facilities is always our top priority and well continue to be vigilant in reviewing our facilities for any risks and threats. They say theyre also upgrading security at other substations. Utility has confirmed the concrete barrier arent the facility is now complete. It took nearly two years, but the security upgrades will make it far more difficult for snipers to succeed a second time. Thats a big deal. Your reportering has prompted some change. Thank you, tony. If you have a tip for tony give us a call or you can send under the circumstances us an email. Did you feel any of them . Tech companies and Venture Capital firms are watching this case closely now as new charges surface, the potential money involved has gone way up. Its a decision that could be very expensive, and that might make the ellen powell case much larger than first thought. Now that the judge in the case ruled the former Venture Capitalist can sue for punitive but about punishing the company. Punishment to the tune of according to estimates as much as 160 million. Enough say the experts, to scare other companies away from potential discrimination cases. So clearly, this is a bell weather case in terms of sending a message about gender discrimination in the financial industry. As well as the tech industry, which within the last few days has been hit with gender discrimination lawsuits filed against facebook and twitter. I think theres a fair number of women who work in Silicon Valley who can really identify with this case.
