They cornered him in a parking garage negotiating for hours. When those negotiations failed, police sent in a robot carrying an explosive, and they detonated it, ending his life. A look now at how this night of terror unfolded. The time was 7 00 p. M. , the place, belo garden park in downtown dallas. Hundreds of protesters gathering with a common cause, demanding change after a terrible week when two more africanamerican men were killed by police. About 800 people marched through the streets. There was passion, but there was peace, too. In a week of us against them, black versus white, the police and the protesters in dallas seemed determined to get along. Just before 9 00 p. M. , the crack of semiautomatic weapons fire. All of a sudden we just heard gunfire. And there were shots ringing out it felt like from every direction. Peace ambushed by terror. Somebody is really armed to the teeth. People scattered, gripped by panic. At 9 35 p. M. , police warned people to stay away from downtown as they searched for the shooters. 10 29 p. M. , Dallas Police chief david brown gives the nation a first report on victims. 11 officers were shot and 3 are deceased. 11 27 p. M. , Police Announce they have a female suspect in custody. They also are negotiating with a another suspect in a parking garage. The male suspect tells them hes angered over the deaths of black men at the hands of police and wants revenge. Eventually officers had no other option but to send in an explosive device attached to a robot. They detonate the bomb, killing the man later identified as 25yearold army vet micah Xavier Johnson. 3 05 a. M. , in a powerful and poignant moment, Dallas Police officers saluted their fallen comrades outside parkland memorial hospital. This morning, in the light of day, the totality of what happened the night before becomes a grim reality. 12 officers and 2 civilians had been shot with a total of 5 officers killed. And a city struggling to recover. The shock of last nights event still in the air here in dallas. We want to turn now to someone who is in the thick of it all in the moments after the shooting began. Scott friedman from our nbc station kxas here in dallas, he had some exclusive reporting today. Lester, good to see you. Tonight Law Enforcement source with knowledge of the situation tells me that the shooter, the suspect, was laughing during the standoff last night. That hourslong standoff. Singing at points. Not anxious at all, not afraid of the situation. He told police of his dislike for officers, particularly white officers during that standoff. He was wearing a military style bulletproof vest and told officers he had military training. The situation inside that building, the intensity there on a scale of one to 10 was a 30. I was back in new york watching the streaming coverage you guys had. It was incredible. Scott, your kxas colleague scory schmidt was here last night. They got incredible video. They were right in the middle of it. At first didnt believe what they were hearing, thought it was firecrackers. Then realized as people ran for cover, what was unfolding. The situation was still incredibly intense. Officers with guns drawn telling us to get beside buildings or below walls. Did they know where he was . They didnt. The frustrating thing from officers, they just didnt have a sense of where the shots were coming from and with the noise echoing off of buildings in the downtown area, it was very hard for them to detect the direction of the fire. As i was watching on my laptop, thats the first thing that struck me, where did you know it was coming from because it echoed . Then later in the evening we had that dramatic blast that we could hear which we now know was the police sending that robot in and ending the suspects life. We know there are hotels here, some people locked in and watching whats happening. People out on the streets in the beginning of the evening, still a crowd of people standing around restaurants, milling about trying to get back to their cars or to the train to get home after taking part in that march earlier in the evening. Nice to see you again, sorry its under these circumstances. But great coverage. Thanks very much. Were continuing to learn late details about the shooter who lived in the suburbs outside dallas. Police have been searching his home carrying out bags of evidence. Jacob rascon is there as well. Jacob, whats going on there right now . Reporter lester, good evening. Weve learned that the gunman grew up here in mesquite, texas, just 20 minutes away from the rampage. And this is the home where neighbors say he lived with his mother for many years. And this is the backyard where at least one neighbor says that the gunman would practice obstacle courses with his army uniform on and carrying his rifles. As you mentioned, we had detectives and atf agents in and ute of this house for several hours. We now know that the large bags of evidence that they were carrying had ballistic vests in them. They had rifles, bombmaking materials, they had ammunition, they had a journal as well of Tactical Training that he had written down clearly preparing for exactly this. Weve also learned his military records show that he was an Army Reservist for six years. He did two hours in afghanistan. And after he left last year, he became an aide for underprivileged children and adults right here. Then suddenly something snapped. His mom tells nbc news she believed it was the shootings earlier this week that had to do with officerinvolved shootings of black men that drove him to the rampage. And while the Texas Governor and others say they believe he was the lone gunman, theyre still investigating whether there might have been any coconspirators or anybody who possibly knew about this attack. Lester . Yeah, jacob. Im wondering someone harboring this kind of hate, did he pop up on anyones radar in any form or fashion before all this . This is part of the investigation, lester, that we dont know that he was on any watchlist, for example. He had no criminal history. The police made a point of saying that in their latest update, that they had no indication from anyone as far as we know that he might have done Something Like this. Lester . All right, jacob rascon, thank you. A number of those injured remain hospitalized this evening. Tammy lightner is outside one of those facilities for us where theres been a heavy Police Presence all day. Tammy, good evening. Thats right. Good evening, lester. Some of those victims are still here tonight recovering, but what you cant see is the line of police cars that have been coming and going all day around the back of the er. Police officers from all over the state of texas wanting to pay their respects. Some of these officers were here overnight at one point a very emotional scene. The officers lined up in the emergency room bay as two of their officers who passed away came through the emergency room bay. They saluted them as they went through. Weve also learned that three of the officers that were injured worked for the dallas area rapid transit. That was omar cannon, misty mcbride and jesus retana. Hes been released from the hospital. The others are still here recovering but were told theyre expected to make a full recovery. And just a short while ago, we spoke with two of the emergency room doctors who actually treated these victims, and they describe the moment when everybody came in as chaotic and that they had very little warning. We probably had 50 volunteers that were home watching the news, saw this, put on their scrubs, came in to work uncalled. I had five docs that i called on my drive in to work, and they were ready to come in. We had no time to really prepare. People saw things on the news, they live in the local area, were hearing the gunshots, the police cars, and they were calling to say im coming in to help. Reporter that doctor is actually married to a Police Officer, and she told me the moment she realized that all of the victims were Police Officers, it was just heartbreaking for her. Lester . All right, tammy leitner, thank you. Both of the presumptive president ial nominees reacted to the killings. Donald trump saying what he called the senseless deaths in minnesota, louisiana and dallas. This afternoon i spoke with Hillary Clinton and began by asking her how after all these incidents we can move the needle on race relations. I believe we need a national conversation. And we start showing respect toward one another, seeing each other, walking in each others shoes. I think we have to show our support for our police under very difficult circumstances, particularly as we have seen in the last days, the bravery of Police Officers running toward danger and being shot down. At the same time weve got to do criminal Justice Reform and we need National Guidelines about the use of force, particularly lethal force. So routine traffic stops dont escalate into killings. And madam secretary, our time is short. If i could switch gears. This is the first time weve had a chance to chat since the head of the fbi called you out for careless handling of classified documents on your personal email server. You said that none of the emails you sent were marked classified. He said they were. You said it was a single device. He said it was multiple devices. You say you turned over all workrelated material. He says you didnt. Did he get it right, and if not, where did he get it wrong . Yesterday director comey clarified many of the issues that you just alluded to. Very quickly, he clarified, as did the state department, that the very few no more than three documents that they thought might have some kind of marking, two of them were the result of human error. They were not classified. And i believe and have said many times that i take classified material seriously. I have said i regret using a personal email. We turned over every document in my possession when the state department requested it, and we turned over every device that we had. But to the extent that theres a disconnect between things you said and what he later found, it is certainly playing into the narrative of the Trump Campaign whether you can even be trusted with classified materials. How do you respond to that . Well, again, i would just repeat, if you read his testimony yesterday, i think there was a lot of clarification. I do not believe that all of the professionals that i dealt with in the state department were careless in handling classified material, and im very proud to have worked with them and i believe that the clarification that was set forth yesterday answers a lot of those remaining questions. Hillary clinton speaking to us from philadelphia earlier today.
