Well, the headlines from rio tonight, a soccer shocker. The u. S. Womens soccer team, just in case you havent heard already, is out. Its the first time theyve failed to make at least the sem es of any major tournament. Lets begin with colin rush. And some interesting comments after this match. Yeah, janelle. The outcome was shocking. The controversial postgame comments not surprising when you consider the source. Ill get back to that shortly. First, heres how sweden pulled off this upset. Pia sund ij coached them. Inside knowledge she knew her team didnt have the offensive firepower to hang with the the u. S. Team, so they took the air out of the ball and had a 10 lead until alex morgan tied it. The game ultimately decided on penalty shots. Morgan unable to convert her opportunity, then kristin press likewise. Lisa dal dfuss beat hope solo. I feel like penalties can go either way especially has no influence on who was dominant in the game or who had most possessions. So we just werent lucky today with the penalties. Now, back to solo, no stranger to controversy in recent years, said this afterwards. Im very proud of this team but i also think we played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. Now, solo got some responses for this reaction from sundidge, its okay to be a coward if you win. In defense to solo she was referring to swedens strategy and her tactics not her opponents personally. The threetime defending champs are out. Its a big story across the world. Most olympians fall short of the gold medal, how do you deal with it . We saw how hope solo dealt with it. Coming up later well chat with our olympics analyst Natalie Coughlin in studio with us. Her reaction to this story. Its a medal more than eight decades in the making. Tonight the long drought is over for the u. S. Mens fencing team. If you were around in 1932, this is no big deal. But if you werent, its a big deal. The bronze in the team foil competition. Among the stoofrs team is a bay area product. Jessica aguirre joins us from rio. What a great story for this San Francisco family. Reporter oh, my god. It was so exciting today. It was really a heart thumping day, raj and janelle, for fans of u. S. Mens team foil and for fans of Alex Massialas and Gerek Meinhardt. So moving today because they were up, they were down and then finally they were on that podium. Thats what happened, the squad started out strong this morning with a win against egypt and their chances at gold looked great. But then the second bout against russia proved much more difficult with massialas struggling. The squad suffered a loss in the semifinal round to russia knocking them out of contention for that gold medal, but the bronze was still in sight. They came back strong in the next bout defeating olympic champions italy to take the bronze medal. As you said, the first medal for the u. S. In team foil since 1932. I spoke to alex literally as he was walking off the piste, thats the strip where they compete. He told me they could not have pulled off the win if it hadnt been for his teammates. I wouldnt have been able to fence without those guys. Reporter so you are now headed back to the bay area with not one medal but two medals. I mean, does that sink in already, that thats how youre going back to stanford, a twotime medal holder . Its amazing feeling. You know. I have no words. You know, it was a dream for me as a kid to just get one medal. Now im bringing back two in one olympics, its an amazing feeling. Im so proud. You know, im so proud to be able to bring two medals back. Obviously, i wish one of them was gold, but just the fact that im able to bring back, not only for the bay area but for u. S. Fencing. People didnt think we were ever contenders in u. S. Mens fencing especially individually and in team. You just said it. A team we havent had it for almost 89 years. To show them now were contenders all around, its an amazing feeling. Doing it with this group of guys. Reporter that group of guys he talked about is San Francisco native Gerek Meinhardt but also is Miles Chamley Watson and race imboden. Those are the guys that hes referring to. Now, alex is really happy for gerek, because this is his last olympics. And so happy for his father Greg Massialas who is not only his dad but the coach of mens foil fencing, and then one last note, raj, and youll probably remember this. They actually lost the bronze medal to italy in 2012 at the london games, and today they defeated them. So certainly revenge tonight is sweet. Yeah, we remember that well. And its a really nice story for the massialas family in San Francisco. Jessica, nice work with that interview. Thanks. We have more olympics coverage still to come. The white truck barreled into the front of the dennys restaurant. The driver and his wife sat in front of the restaurant still visibly in shock over what happened. My husband was going to pull back to go out and to come around to park in the handicap and all of a sudden the car just started spinning around, the truck and this is where we landed up. It went out of control, my car. Reporter investigators are still trying to figure out what exactly happened. But the fire battalion chief said this is the third case in the last ten days where a Senior Citizen drove into a building in free mont. Usually what happens is the person has their foot on the accelerator and the brake and they realize the car is moving faster, the foot is partially on the gas pedal. The harder they push, the faster the vehicle goes. Reporter the restaurant host was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after shattered glass fell on her. It sounded crazy. There was like a big i just heard a crash, i came out. A lady fell on the ground. Reporter employees began tweeting and facebooking photos from the crash. The couple in truck says theyll be okay after a very harrowing few seconds. The dennys will be closed for some time. Weve got to talk about todays soccer match. Team usa out, which is a big stunner, but also the comments from hope solo the goalie. This was a surprise or was it not. Sweden. She called them cowards. She called them cowards. You have to take comments like that with a grain of salt. Because youre trained your emotions so are high and youre trained for that moment for so many years and then right as you have the biggest defeat of your career or one of the biggest defeats, you get a microphone in your face. All that being said, hope has a history of saying things off the cuff. You know, it makes headlines. But you have to give her a little understanding because she is very emotional. And then she went back on it a little bit later and apologized and kind of gave context to her comments. It was a big deal. Lets talk swimming now. Simone manuel who we saw last night, you were pulling out your hair with excitement. Oh, my gosh. This is the shocker. I was telling raj last night that the two sure things of this meet, Katie Ledecky winning the 100 free and Kate Campbell winning the 200 free. From australia. Simone was the Biggest Surprise of the meet so far. We still have two more nights of competition. It was absolutely incredible. I really thought Kate Campbell was unbeatable. Simone was so smart in her strategy, kept her head down the last 15 meters and it was perfect. The reaction on her face was priceless. And what she said. Well take a listen. Its definitely been a long journey these past four years. Im so blessed to have a gold medal. Im just so blessed. Im shaking right now. So emotional. Every time i watch it, its emotional. And her mom was there, of course. Thats her coach from stanford right there. This is a deeper cultural story now in swimming. Something the Africanamerican Community really rallies them around that we can do it now is the cry. No, shes the first africanamerican female to have won a gold medal. Anthony ervin was the first africanamerican male. Its breaking barriers, its exciting, a very special moment not just for africanamericans but for everyone. Shes so young. Thats a really big deal. We havent won that event in swimming in a very, very long time. We can see her two more times. She has two more possibly. She has to qualify but she has the 53 and then likely be on the 400 medley relay. I want a camera on natalie watching the races because she gets so excited in the newsroom. I do. I get really excited. Thanks, everybody. Lights. Access. Rio. Did you ever think there was a time you guys wouldnt make it together . Oh, yeah. Yeah. Now we have a little one and a wedding at the end of this year. The three loves of michaels live. Mama phelps, fiance nicole, and little boomer. Simone biles proud sister and brother. Wait till you see the final fives heartfelt thank you to or team captain. Where are you taking me, natalie, where are we going . Blame it on rio.
