Land in Central Valley is sinking because of too much ground water pumps during the drought. Sta in marin, sandbags and soggystr uner back to our microclimate weather alert. Storm bringing down trees, flooding roadways and triggers mudslides. Weve seen this before. Christy smith is life tonight. Got to be frustrating for the Business Owners there. They get flooded out a lot. Yeah, thats right. Right now were seeing a break in the rain. The businesses are kree pairpre. Some closed today, some stayed ho open. We saw people coming by looking at the creek. Thats not the case now but the storm did cause some problems in the county. Heavy rains pounded mill valley this morning sending a 60foot tree crashing into a garage. I imagine until the storm blows throw its going to be active, mudslides, power lines and tree. Reporter creeks rose, sandbags lined driveways. Deputies checked on residents as the high tide brought flood waters. Anywhere willing to die for their county should have a country willing to give them citizenship. But instead the country they served deports them, hundreds of military veterans. Chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking it for us. Were going to continue to see some form of rain until the weekend. Thats exactly right. My take on things the way we see them right now, the cold front with the strongest rain and also the heaviest wind is moving off to the south. Its located right across the southern peninsula and the east bay. Areas off to the north of this has seen the worst weather youll be getting out of the storm system. Were generally starting to calm down across the north bay to San Francisco right over the oakland. Its in the south bay well have the heaviest rainfall likely over the next two to three hour period specifically from san martin down to gilroy. I think youll undergo possibly the heaviest rainfall here continuing through 7 15 tonight as the rainfall moves from the Santa Cruz Mountains right over you. Well they served the country but they also broke the law and because of it a group once promised u. S. Citizenship has been deported. Steve stock just returned from mexico where he found u. S. Military veterans kicked out of this country. These veterans have been caught up in a law that dates back to president bill clintons administration. The law allows the federal government to deport any noncitizen who commits certain crimes. This applies even if theyve served in the military. Because of that we found hundreds of u. S. Veterans deport bid the very country they were willing to die for. When you walk out of tony romos back porch overlooking the pacific, you might think youre looking at paradise. But in reality, its paradise lost for tony romo who feels trapped here. Just like prisoners of war, you know. All of us together. Romo, a retired marine who led raids into iraq during the buildup of the iraq war was deported by the very country he served, forced to live here after serving time in a u. S. Jail for selling drugs. In the many reen corps, i miss my country, my dad is over there, my daughter, my brothers. Even so, romos allegiance remains to the country he can see from his back porch, just beyond the border wall. It is a great country and ill defend it anytime. We found dozens of u. S. Veterans living in tee wanna, veterans like this retired marine. Deported veterans, i would bring them home. All of them just citizens who served in the vietnam war. Ive been in the u. S. Since up was 1 year old. All of them deported for committing crimes classified as aggravated felonies, things like drug possession, failure to show up in court or entering the country illegally. In this report issued by the aclu in california in july of last year, they were able to identify 250 u. S. Veterans deported to 34 countries. Our investigation found at least 60 veterans living here in the tee wanna, mexico area. I dont think its right but thats the law. A deported u. S. Army veteran helping the aclu prepare the report. We will come into contact either being in the process of being deported or already deported. At least 301. He served two years in polrin after pleading guilty to Illegal Discharge of a firearm in southern california. Deported in 2004, he runs a shelter here nicknamed the bunker where deported veterans can get help with job prospects, immigration advice. I was born in mexico but my allegiance and who i choose to die and fight for is the United States of america. Our investigation found 70,000 noncitizens enlisted in the u. S. Military between 2009 and 2016. At least half of them never applied for citizenship, according to the center for naval anal cease, leaving them vulnerable to deportation im willing to put my life on the line for the country that i love. Yet, your country that you love deports you. The only country ive ever known. To a man these vets served their time in jail prison or probation for the crimes they committed here in the u. S. No one knows exactly how many there are because the u. S. Government does not track that. Did the military drop the ball . Yeah, department of defense did. Retired marine Nathan Fletcher was shocked when we learned about these deported vets. Anyone willing to die for their country should have a kun triwilling to give them citizenship and it was what they were promised when they were joined. Fletcher is lobbying congress to change the law and allow the veterans back. If we had 300 americans who were missing in iraq or afghanistan, we would stop the gravitational spin of the earth to bring them home. They just have to qualify to be a u. S. Citizen. Sharon represents the u. S. Citizenship and immigration services, the federal agency that proprocesses citizenship. The officials from the department of defense declined our request, she did agree to sit down with us. Even if youre served as a veteran in. Thats right, yes. Does that seem fair . Its we dont ask ourselves whats fair or not fair. Were simply here to administer the law. Thats what were charged with. Thats what we do. These are some of the men that have passed away here in mexico. In one of the saddest ironies, current law allows the veterans to return to the u. S. After they die. We will bring their dead body acro across the border, go to a military cemetery, go to a 21gun salute, play tags and fold the flag. Theres no honor in that. Only allowing these men to return when they die or at the point of death. We found the grave of one such veteran, who has been deported to juarez, mexico, now back in the u. S. Resting finally in peace in the National Cemetery in el paso, texas. Many vets told us they were programsed citizenship by their recruiters. Others told us hay thought they became citizens when they took the oath 0 to serve in the military. The pentagon has done a better job of getting information to the recruits, but dating back to 2009, tens of thousands of vets have been left vulnerable. Well take you behind the scenes of one family torn apart by this very policy. When you hug stephanie and you see her, what goes through your heart and your mind . Happiness. See how this law continue to affect these families today. Many of who are u. S. Citizens. Thats tonight at 11 00. We look forward to that. Thank you stephen. Emotional and political there. You can see nothing too heavy here. Some areas light to moderate rainfall. Scatter in the north bay. And for the east bay, the bulk is across the santa clara valley, including downtown san jose. Its moving off to the south and the east at a decent clip. But i think well be stuck with the wet weather for at least the next two hours, especially for morgan hill and gilroy. Specifically in morgan hill well see this batch of rainfall through 7 18 tonight, gilroy through 7 30. We talked about it earlier but i do want to let folks living near the anson rez voi, we got news that it is spilling over. This definitely could make coyote creek run high and fast.
