With lester holt. Good evening. Im Peter Alexander in tonight for lester. As tens of millions of americans begin the holiday rush, security is at the top of everybodys mind. With loved ones crisscrossing the country. Tonight the fbi says it foiled an alleged Christmas Day terror plot to kill americans at one of the countrys favorite tourist destinations right along the San Francisco bay. The suspect, a former marine, was inspired by isis. Nbc justice correspondent Pete Williams has the very latest. Reporter the fbi says the man talked about attacking San Franciscos pier 39, a popular tourist attraction, on Christmas Day. Court documents say it never got beyond the talking stage, but investigators say 26yearold Everitt Aaron jameson, a tow truck driver from modesto began communicating with fbi undercover operatives two months ago telling them he supported isis and was pleased with the new york city attack on a bike path. Investigators saying he was willing to use his u. S. Marine corps training either by joining isis in syria or staging a gun and bomb attack in the u. S. He asked the fbi operatives who he thought were connected with isis for a semiautomatic rifle and components to build a bomb, but they were never provided to him. The fbi says when asked about his escape plan, jameson said, he was ready to die. But Court Documents say on monday he told them, i dont think i can do this after all. Ive reconsidered. After an fbi employee in washington mistakenly dialed his cell phone, then hung up. Agents say a search of his house turned the up three firearms and a martyrdom letter calling the u. S. Nationalistic and godless and complaining about president trumps decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. Jameson appeared briefly in court late today to face these charges. Federal Officials Say hes also been undergoing a Mental Health evaluation. San Francisco Police say even before this arrest theyd already stepped up security for the holidays. Peter . Hallie jackson is at the white house with the details on what the president did and what he did not do today thats also making some news. Good evening. Reporter whats coming next . Hi, good evening, peter. President trump is getting away for the holidays, but theres plenty of work waiting for him when he gets back from maralago. Before he left for his trip, he signed a major gop tax overhaul into law doing it now rather than waiting for something more formal after the new year because he wanted to keep his promise to get that tax plan done by christmas. He signed a shortterm fix to keep the government open for another month, so that sets up a real spending fight in january, which is not the only big battle coming up. Congress will need to cut a deal on immigration. With the fate of about 100,000 undocumented immigrants, socalled dreamers, hanging in the balance. Eventually the white house wants to tackle welfare reform but after infrastructure, with the president calling that the easiest item on his todo list. Because unlike with taxes, the president cannot pass an infrastructure plan without the help of democrats. That means the buzzword for 2018, peter, may end up being bipartisanship. Should note the president left town without holding the traditional yearend news conference. Were hoping to hear more from him come 2018. A full year finally winding down. Thank you very much.
