Good morning, everyone. My sister lives in the midwest, she is very smart, she has more education, she more successful, but i mentioned to her that the founder of tesla went to the high school where she teaches and she didnt know what a tesla is. Its a reminder of all of the things we get spun up here in Silicon Valley do not translate to the res of the united states. That disconnect was on josh reeves mind when he decides to rent an rv and drive across america. Finds his customers and potential customers where they live and in some cases handing over checks. We would play that song about finding america. He went to 11 cities in two weeks from San Francisco, south, al albuquerque, phoenix, amarillo, jacksonville florida. He is on the 30 under 30 list by forbes, and the most admired ceo, joined by katie better of the New York Times and john schwartz. At a time like this, the most admired ceo in tech is a welcome guest indeed. This long list of cities, why those cities . So for this route we wanted to we had a couple constraints. We wanted to go coast to coast, to very different types of cities, and no more of six hours of driving per day. So one thing i wanted to mention, steve going over to the four year, this year he is going through five states in the midwest. So, it seems to be a theme going on. A talked to a lot of ceos in Silicon Valley, and the more the merrier. The better they will have perspective on what they can and could be. so what is the impetus for guys like you and Mark Zuckerberg to go out in the country. The idea for the trip came about in january and we did it a little over a month and a half ago. We tried to not make it overly political. I would say i like to travel, it is a core philosophy of our company to get out and about and explore. I think that election had that impact, realizing the impact on the world and the country. I think it will continue for sure. What do you mean . There is so much concentration of influence now, you look at some of the largest market Cap Companies in the world, but we are very much on the edge from a geographic standpoint. We have good weather, and we can be pretty detached. I think that is interesting. You imagine you go out, you were born and raised in San Francisco to go see what life is like in texas and alabama. Youre also learning what they think of us. California doesnt always have the best image in some of those states, particularly red states, to be honest with you, what do they think of us . That is something i ask i lot of companies i met. Design shops, retail stores. It was a positive connotation of Silicon Valley. People saw it as a place of innovation and change. Generally positive con notation with google, facebook, companies they see driving. And the second part was that it was very far away. There was not a lot of personal connection or friendship. Many cases, it was the first time they mote a tech leader or a Software Found erfounder. We could have send is machine else, but thank goodness we sent you. I think a lot of something businesses in general do thaw consider themselves a flyover country where theyre ignored or i didnt get that sense. I was in alabama talking to a pool and supply store owner, and there is a lot of pride. They serve their community. They have been there for ten or into years. They are really connected and they really favor those relationships. I know there is a health care angle, but some of the other cities, could you possibly help your business, or would you think of jous sourcing some of your organizations there . We have about 450 people outside of the community. This trip was more about the customer. We were excited to talk to them for sure, but were excited to get out of the tech space in general. We do payroll, health insurance, and were helping a lot of Small Business companies as well. I grew up in vermont, can you explain what gusto will do smug to help her bhap is your pitch to people that run successful Small Businesses. Our mission is to make things like payroll, health insurance, things like that as simple as possible. Dealing with local, state, and federal requirements, we make that simple because we do it more in technology. Josh, the company is worth more than a billion dollars, does the fact that youre dealing with Small Business make you more vulnerable to a downturn . There is a lot of turn overin Small Business. It is about 5 or 10 . We think that if there is a downturn, people will become more cost sensitive. Let me squeeze in one last question. If youre hightech, someone is watching and theyre like im going to get myself an rv, what is the advice you would give them not about the people or meeting people, but about driving an rv. Two things, number one, make sure you budget the right amount of time and travel, and check your hub caps, we lost two on the road trip. It was a rental so we had to cover that cost. Oofr are oo and number two, enjoy the ride. It was my first time in an rv and we slept, and worked out, and really enjoyed our time. How to drive for uber or lyft without a car. When press here continues. Welcome back to press here. You click a button on an app, the doors on the car open, you drive it around the city and you return it where ever you want. On tuesday, maven opened their car service to gig workers. Anyone that needs a car to make money. They will be using in part chevys new bolt. Bolt with a b, available to anyone that needs a car to make a living. Now rachael is gm executive in charge of making that happen. Getting all of those cars on the street to use ubers and lyfts. It is completely complimentary. Most of the people using the car Share Offering in the city or the gig are not in the purchase funnel. If youre living in an urban center, owning a vehicle does not make sense, they were never going to be customers. It was serving people where we were, and youre exposing people to new vehicles, and what we have seen is that on the rise share side, they may not remember what car your lyft driver is driving, be this theyre saying this car is cool, and they have gotten a lot of feed back, so it has been a very popular vehicle for them. There is a theory that self driving things will be in fleets. Yeah, i think you probably heard them say that is their intent. If you look into an autonomous future, the Fleet Service is going to be a critical capability. So it is one area where they can fulfill that set, it is a really good real world incubator for for the future and the world, and were able to develop new capabilities and bring them back to the mothership. There is a nice Value Creation between sus staintained funding they get great earnings and access to technology that were developing. So youre based in detroit. You were in seattle and atlanta. How long have you been in detroit and how long have you noticed the change. Is something happening there . For sure, i have never been to detroit until i kablg here for the job. I came over to maven when we launched it. There was a ton of energy. You see, i think, especially with autonomous. There was already a great start and the definition of what is automotive and what is tech, and you get a lot of great energy and talent. You mentioned the vibe, and it plays into the history and the culture. Yeah, the depth of the history in detroit, i dont think that i comprehended this is a great city, right . It is really, really incredible. And in seattle, of course, very tech centered and innovative. I think you get the energy of not just tech and not just forward looking, but a maker mentality. Physical creation, and that combination of hardware, software, integration, i think it is regrally great. San francisco to austin used to be called the nerd bird and now it is automotive engineers going across the country. Yeah, on the flight out i ran into three colleagues all coming here for different reasons. We didnt realize we were all coming here. You do start to see the Incredible Movement back and forth, and if youre Walking Around the General Motors campus, you will see people from every company and country, and it is just incredibly diverse eco system of talent. Let me go back to the rental where you are renting these cars out, 229 a week for the most expensive car, that is very competitive. And why a week . If if i want to drive uber for an hour or hour and a half, not necessarily a week. The week was again, its about flexibility, right . Nobody that we spoke with wanted a yearlong commitment. The one week minimum is a couple reasons. Most simple is it allows something to experience the full arch. You will see a peak on friday and saturday evenings, doing a whole week, it gives them a chance to see if it fits their life. You can see when surge is. So with delivery on top, we can allow them to explore that maybe i will do a grub hub delivery. And commuting hours, ride share, and in the afternoon a Package Delivery shift. It gives them enough flexibility and time. Thank you for being here. Of course, thank you for having me. Google, linkedin, amazon all building mega offices. The future of Silicon Valley when press here continues. Google is building a staggering big office. The mega campus they want to build a mountain view. One under a giant dome or tent. It is worth remembers life comes at you fast. Googles current Head Quarters is the former headquarters of the fbi. Facebooks headquarters was u. S. Microsystems. The lessons of suns fall has not been lost on facebook. Which is left suns sign on visible class doors as a reminder of employees. I like the reference, but you caught that, youre the first to catch that. There are still sun logos, and you assume that is because they want to remind them. Yes, what happened in the past, past prologue. But it is just a remind near there are other Companies Like excited home, remember when they emerged, by the ampex sign that was up there. These things happen and you know, it is a remind near they use their market value and cash to decide were going to build on to our greatness. You mentioned the sears tower as well, too. Sometimes it doesnt pan out. Sometimes it signals a turning point or an Inflection Point in their history. And in San Francisco youre seeing the same thing. It is phenomenal, right . We never managed the sears tower would not be the sears tower, but some day the Sales Force Tower will not be the Sales Force Tower. I cant imagine that happening. What google wants to do, if it tells us anything at all, it tells us a lot of things, i dont want to pretend that i can tell everything it will tell us, but it is that Silicon Valley, the San Francisco bay area will remain the Silicon Valley and the San Francisco bay area for a long, long time to come. If you look all of the ocounty ri, right . There is segments of tech. What goes on in detroit and other parts of the united states. Those are all important areas feeding great areas of innovation. They are really, literally putting down roots. As a south bay homeowner, ill tell dwlu is the most exciting thing in the world. I could not be more excited because it guarantees the future. I think one other thing, too, if i might add when you think that apple, google, all of these companies cant get any bigger than they are, all of a sudden not only are they putting up these campuses, but theyre almost building their own countries. I think especially when you look at it from a marketing and branding lens and what it says to all of the world, were going to be the center of innovation, one of the most power forces of technology now and for a long, long time to come. There simply is no stopping us. That is really the message that that new complex is spending. I think it also represents an interesting dynamic happening out in the valley. There was times when they were scrappy companies and i would say that is no longer. What is happening with their product line up, when they get so established, they become more like an ibm, and now you have a situation where microsoft went through that, to. Yeah, the start of the Silicon Valley, instead of bursting through and beating and challenging the google and the apple, they are just being acquired by them. For apple, for linked in, for microsoft or facebook. A place where smart investors can place interesting bets. Are there the amount of cash theyre setting up, like 260 billion, they are will we ever see another facebook or apple, probably not. Theyll never reach that side. I want to throw this in there and then i have to go to commercial. Sears tower was, in 2017 numbers, cost 810 million to build. 810 million. Apple, 5 billion in 2017. The reason we have to go to commercial is i want to talk to you about uber and well be back in just a minute. Just filed, to the New York Times about uber, im not making fun of you, you are literally the New York Times reporter posting about uber as it is happening. This past week was nuts. Its true, it is one of my guys laegd the coeading coverag not slept in days. It is like the tour de france. He was in the room when the decision went down. He wasnt, but it sounded like it. I always imagine him wearing the mask and listening to all of this, dont sell yourself short. You have been covering uber and doing an excellent job. I know these hot takes are all the rage, but what can we take away from it. It is a founders world. You can go raise money at the drop of a dime. All of these special terms when you control the company. When push comes to shove, the investors are more than happy to show this awesome display of power. Does that surprise you a little bit . You know, it did. It is such an extreme measure. Technically, you have to go to war with us, and us means a group of silicon vollalu valley investors you need if you want to start another company, and the stability. The stability that they and uber will need. Fidelity will have to be an investor that says well support you when youre a public company. Do they want to exercise all of that with the control they have. It is a huge gamble and they decided to take the bet and they won. Should they have done it earlier . Yes, of course, no one wanted to be in the position that everyone was in this week. Its not good for the investors, the company, and now the employees are upset. You said like 1,000 people, 1 14 of the workforce is in support of him. How do you raise moral in this company now that still has to work every day to be competitors. They have to be out there on the ground, motivating a work force that cant believe their ceo has been fired. Watch for my guests excellent coverage. We have a huge library of news. You can watch the show, a podcast on your phone, apple tv, or roku. Thank you for making us part of your sunday morning. To comunidad del valle, im damian trujillo. And today, once again, wine country comes to Silicon Valley. Sabor del valle, on your comunidad del valle. Male announcer nbc bay area presents comunidad del valle with damian trujillo. Damian sabor del valle is back, and Ray Castaneda is kind of the inspiration behind sabor del valle. Hes back on the show to talk about the 8th annual. And you corrected me there during the break. We are in wine country. Talk about that. Ray singh castaneda we are in wine country. I mean, weve had wineries here that have been here over 100 years, and damian the paul massons and everybody else, right . Ray the paul massons, and thewe have guglielmos that have been here 7580 years, and theres others, but Northern California is wine country, you know . Im kinda bias. Everybody talks about paso robles,
