This is dynamic where each side thinks the other side is 100 at fault here. I dont think well get to thursday without a deal. Were seeing tempers fly on all sides right now. Absolutely. Thats todays top story this morning. The push to end the Government Shutdown taking on new urgency with the u. S. Days from losing its ability to borrow money. Peter alexander is at the white house this morning with the very latest. Good morning, peter. Reporter good morning, david. No deal in sight and not a lot of progress here. The next days will be critical on the u. S. Closing in on a thursday deadline. Thats when the government could begin defaulting on its bills. A heavy focus will be on the Global Financial markets, including the stock market opening today on the holiday that could put more pressure on republicans and democrats to finally make a deal. With just three days until the u. S. Is expected to run out of money to pay its bills its hardly inspiring, the Top Party Leaders in the senate talking is touted as a breakthrough. Im positive today. Reporter among the sticking points spending levels, the length of a shortterm deal to reopen the government as well as any extension of the nations Borrowing Limit. To my colleagues in the house on both sides, and to the senate, were ruining both institutions. Reporter with the shutdown in its third week americans on both sides are furious. Frustrations on display across washington sunday where tea party protestors piled barricades in front of the white house. Those were carried from the closed world war ii memorial where sarah palin and senator ted cruz rallied conservatives. Our veterans should be above politics. Enough games. Reporter some states have given up waiting for the federal government, footing the bill to reopen National Parks themselves. Mt. Rushmore today, the statue of liberty and the grand canyon over the weekend. Still, americans are hurt and in response pulling together. In iowa, moms have donations after setting up a Facebook Page to help parents who lost government benefits. We just need to pull together as a nation and start filling in these gaps and get through this together. Reporter some republicans are accusing the democrats of overreaching and trying to capitalize on the republican parties flipping poll numbers. An agreement is possible in the house soon but whether theyll go along with it is unclear. Peter alexander, thank you so much. Lets bring in senator corker a republican from tennessee. Are you willing to go out on a limb and say by thursday this congress will raise the debt ceiling increasing the nations Borrowing Limit and warding off Economic Disaster . Well, savannah, you know, theres no question that House Republicans for a long time overreached regarding the Health Care Bill and for about, you know, 48 hours now, the democrats have overreached by wanting to spend more, unbelievably. But i do sense that people are getting back on the right page here and i do hope that by the end of the day well have an agreement that makes sense for our country. Are you confident of that . You have ceos worrying, World Leaders meeting this weekend. Worried about the impact, not just in this country but across the world financial markets. Can you say, yes, congress will take us off this cliff . Savannah, this environment is different than any that i have seen around an arrangement like this. Its very difficult, i think, for any of us to say for sure this is going to happen. I was with finance ministers from around the world saturday night. Typically im in tennessee but i was here this weekend. You are right. Theres a lot of concern about whether were going to meet this deadline. I think at the end of the day we will. But we have to move ahead with a Senate Agreement and then the house has got to be open to focussing on those things that make our country stronger which is spending restraints. Hopefully everybody is getting, as i mentioned, on the right page, and that is focused on spending and reforms and the things that make our country stronger. I think that is beginning to be the case and hopefully well move ahead today, savannah. You just mentioned that House Republicans in your view overreached with this entire exercise. As you know, the polls have been devastating to republicans. Do you think that the Republican Party deserves credit or blame, however you want to put it, for the shutdown and now the looming crisis with the debt ceiling . Well, that effort obviously was not one that bore fruit and i knew that from day one and i had been saying that. But the other side of the aisle seeing what they thought was weakness also moved to a place that was an overreach. So i think were finally, savannah, in a place where the right conversation is occurring. I dont really focus on who gets blame. I was elected to try to solve problems and i think were on the verge of possibly doing that today. So lets stay focused on that and move that behind us and lets set up an arrangement where in an orderly way we can focus on the reforms that we all know as a country we need to have in place to make our nation stronger. We know people will be glad of that. Senator corker of tennessee, good to have you with us. Thank you. Thank you. We have breaking news this morning about a Red Cross Team of workers being kidnapped. Have Richard Engel with the latest. Four of them have been released. They are in good health. It is a sign of how dangerous it is to work in syria, even if you are trying to deliver humanitarian supplies. Reporter the Syrian Government may be destroying chemical weapons, but that has not slowed the carnage. Four vehicles, a convoy of eight workers traveling north of today mass damascus were kidnapp kidnapped. Two car bombs exploded in front of the Syrian State Television building on sunday. The blast sent the broadcast to black. But another channel with a studio nearby had a unique perspective. Watch the man on the right. He is a proregime analyst and as he is describing how foreign backed islamic extremists are destroying syria with bombs, behind him the anchor asks how he is. We are resilient. Go ahead with your questions the analyst says and the second explodes. The analyst cant hide his look of confusion and shock. The bombings were likely the work of Syrian Rebels increasingly lead by islamic radicals linked to al qaeda. The socalled Islamic State in iraq and idlab theyre not just talking the Syrian Government. Witnesses say the Al Qaeda Backed group kidnapped 7 aid workers from the International Committee of the red cross and arab red crescent on sunday morning. They just delivered medical supplies to the city of idlib. Calling on the Groups Holding them to release them immediately and unconditionally. Reporter more than 110,000 syrians have been killed in the civil war so far. The u. S. Chose not to intervene, but for syrians, the killings and kidnappings cant be ignored. Once again, several aid workers are still being held and the red cross says they will continue to operate. Good news. Those now freed. Richard, thank you so much. Lets turn to natalie with breaking news. A small homemade bomb in los angeles at the airport. Thats right. The fbi investigating after the small explosion at the Los Angeles International airport sunday night. The blast delayed several flights. Nbcs tom costello has the latest from the washington d. C. Newsroom. Good morning. Reporter good morning, this was about 6 30 last night at l. A. X. International terminal two. Police and firefighters were called to a report of an explosion in an employee restroom. An area the general public doesnt have access to. They found evidence of a dry ice explosion inside a plastic bottle. A Chemical Reaction caused the explosion. Overall operations not greatly impacted by this. A few flights were briefly delayed. This appears to have been a prank that certainly got everybodys attention. There were no injuries and no planes involved. The airport was back to normal ops by 9 00 p. M. The lapd and fbi are looking for a suspect or suspects, natalie. Tom costello, thank you. Breaking news from london. A 44yearold man was arrested after trying to enter Buckingham Palace with a knife. No one was injured and the queen was not at the palace. At least 115 people have died on a bridge on a stampede. Hundreds were crossing a bridge that leads to a remote temple when railings broke. Witnesses say people panicked and flights broke out. Police began hitting people with batons causing a stampede. Most were crushed and others drowned. The clean up is under way in india after the country got hit by a powerful cyclone that caused damage. Many residents are now coming home to find their houses in ruins. The cyclone was the strongest storm to hit india in a decade. It flattened shacks and houses and destroyed millions of dollars of crops. So far, 17 deaths reported from the storm. Caught on camera in china. You can see people making their way down the bridge toward a dock area when it suddenly gives way sending everyone in the harbor. About ten people suffered minor injuries. 30 people had to be rescued sunday when their boat capsized off the shores of miami. The 45foot catamaran was submerged in eight feet of water. The coast guard and Good Samaritans helped pull people from the water. A preliminary investigation shows the boat was used to taxi people to and from a party on a local beach. High drama in boston last night as the red sox made an unforgettable comeback in the game against the tigers. The red sox down 51 in the eighth, but david ortiz tied the game with the grand slam. T torii hunter almost made the catch. The reaction of the Boston Police officer in the stands. A lot of people are talking about that. That is officer steve horgan. I dont know if he was trying to help torii hunter out or not. I dont think so. The red sox went on to win in the ninth. The boston fans are classy. You see south dakota. We have areas of just torrential rain here. Here is the area of low pressure right in through here. On the Northwest Side of it, that is where we have the snow. It is in the Higher Elevations where we have a lot of snow. Because of that, we naturally have the Winter Weather advisories. In blue, the winter storm warnings. We could end up with a foot of snow. Take a look at who will get what. The area in navy here where we could end up with 9 to 12 inches of snow. To the east of that, you see moving in central and western minnesota, that is where we could have 5 inches of rainfall. It will be messy out that way. Up and down the west coast, a lot of sunshine. Now to a mystery in new mexico where an amber alert has been cancelled for a group of teenagers from a ranch for at risk youth. The boys are safe and with their families but the program they were attending is at the center of a troubling investigation. Kristen dahlgren is in hillsboro this morning and has the story. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning, savannah. Authorities this morning are seeking ranch owner Scott Chandler. Theres no charges. He is just wanted for questioning at this point. At least one of the families of the boys that returned is angry that an amber alert was issued at all. For two days authorities combed through miles and miles of desert scrub before calling off the search last night. Its been checked and theyre with the guardian. Reporter the nine boys are now home with their families. Something the attorney for the Tierra Blanca ranch he told authorities days ago. Theres no mechanism to quickly verify they are with the parents. This is not an amber alert situation. Reporter the alert came friday after they tried to serve a search warrant for the ranch and they found it empty and Scott Chandler gone. Dozens of Police Reports allege abuse at the ranch, handcuffs, shackles, teens forced to run for long periods of time and threats of castration. Steven cowan sent his son jonathan to the program. They wake them up in the middle of the night. Theyre forced to do things. Reporter he says his son is now standing by Scott Chandler like other teens in the program that have come forward in support. I was thinking about trying to imagine a situation where scott would kidnap anybody. Nothing would come to mind. Reporter but critics wonder why the program isnt credentialed or regulated. Mark lived there for two years. There were no therapists or counselors or drug addiction specialists. Reporter Scott Chandler denies any abuse took place and just last week defended his program. Theres proof in the pudding. Everybody wants to make it about credentials. Compare our success to the supposed credentialed people. Reporter chandler will likely face a lot more questions as may the state. New Mexico Department of child and Family Services wasnt aware of the abuse allegations until just last year and the complaints were made by former residents here at the ranch so it was out of its jurisdiction. Bob costas himself weighing in on the controversy over the redskins name. Ask yourself what the equivalent would be if directed toward africanamericans, hispanics, asians, or members of any other ethnic group. When considered that way, redskins cant possibly honor a heritage or a noble character trait nor can it possibly be considered a neutral term. Its an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present day intent. Thats bob costas at halftime of the redskins game yesterday. Redskins owner dan snyder has set out and out were not changing the name. We have 81 years of history behind it. He said were never going to change it. You can use all caps. This is a case that makes you think of your own children and shudder at what happened. The thought of your 3yearold girl just disappearing and years later not knowing what happened. Well, there just arent words. Here in london they say they have new clues. The parents are clinging to hope and fighting for the truth. Madeline mccann, a happy, outgoing 3yearold. Full of energy. In 2007 during a vacation, madeline vanished. But more than six years after she went missing from her familys apartment in portugal, could detectives have found evidence to track her down, to find her alive, now 10 years old . This morning there were photographs of a man acting strangely in the area. Could he did the abductor . They are taking to the air waves to make a fresh appeal. Come into the apartment, and take a little girl. Reporter and they will reconstruct the day she disappeared to solve the case. She played tennis, was he watching this . This is one of the last pictures, smiling. The detective says they have new clues as well. Primarily we are trying to do everything back to zero. Reporter police have access to cell phone data. In the area, one former detective told me theres still definitely hope. Are they going to find her . They could do. The they could do. The thing is, the information there at the time is there. Reporter and british detectives say witnessed were left unquestioned even while her parents were accused. They have gained strength from story like duguard found after 17 years. They hold on to the hope that madeline is alive. Because its clear that the initial investigation missed a crucial lead, i was there as a reporter the day after madeline disappeared. And even then it appeared apartments werent being searched, work wasnt being done, and all these years later, the detectives are searching. Just imagine how the parents feel. You can see the flash flood watches and warnings are posted up and down texas. Its the tropical moisture thats fueling the storm systems. We could have an additional 13 inch was rain. Dallas and st. A lot of investors are thinking is there a way to insulate myself from what could be coming down . Focus on the savings, the shortterm savings. This is not a time to rush to sell investments, but make sure you build up enough cash on hand in case of an emergency. This could be a big one. A lot of Financial Firms are spending money in preparation, but think about your stock portfolio, whats the best advice . Try to think longterm. We know the market is going to be in for a rough ride today, maybe over the next couple of days. If youve got money in stocks that you need not next five y r years, it doesnt belong there. But longterm, you have time to ride it out. But we went through this two years ago as well with washington. This is the second monitor, we continue to ask about the impact of the default. The big issue is the bond market. It has to do with Rising Interest Rates because its about paying billings. Bd. The rising cost for the u. S. Cost going up, thats going to impact everything you are borrowing as well. And that includes credit cards. You could see a Significant Impact on your credit card rate, seeing 15 , thats average, thats going to go up and hit your monthly bill. Now is the time to pay down that credit card debt. Has to do with the confidence people have in treasuries. As we lose confidence, Mortgage Rates go up, car loans are going to go up. So, you know, sharons right, pay down as much of your shortterm debt as you can. So we talk about home mortgages being so important, sharon, as we come other here, unemployment is still so high. And i talked to christine over the weekend on meet the press, major bankers talking about this could usher in a recession like that. The kind of disruptive shock this could have. What what does that do . Paralyzes companies, they dont to want hire. We could see a serious impact on job growth we are starting to see. If you are fortunate enough to have a job, focus on the job, make sure you stay marketable and employable at this time. If you are looking if a job, it may take a bit longer to find one. It makes the shortterm savings more important. If this happens, we could start to feel the effects in Social Security payments, tax refunds very quickly. Those will be delayed. Coming up, the man behind a movie secretly shot at disneyworld is getting a lot of attention. But first, an already full house that just got bigger. Were going to talk to the parent of a new set of quintuplets that already have four kids under seven at home including twins. But first, Kristen Dahlgren with their story. This house is already pretty lively, but this family is in for a whole lot more. Thats right. Five more kids. Quintuplets, born september 6th. We were trying for one more, you know. You dont try for three and four at one time. With the 7yearold and 3yearold and twin oneyearolds already at home, mom and dad were surprised to find out they were pregnant with multiples again. We wanted a large family. We always said that. We just never anticipated overnight. To add shock to surprise, two days after hearing they were pregnant with quadruplets, the daughter revealed it was really quintuplets. Oh, yeah, youre doing so good, by the way, theres the fifth baby there. The couple didnt conceive using invitro fertilization making them very rare. The chances of this occurring was one in a couple of million. Oh my gosh, are you out of your mind . Five . Its like oh my gosh. Theres days im used to it, ive adjusted and then theres other days that are like what are we going to do . We have five babies we were not expecting. She pent her last trimester on bedrest in arizona. She carried the babies more than 32 weeks. As a mother with nine children, you often think do i have enough love for all of them and i think thats been my number one priority is to make sure im not i dont want anyone to feel neglected or unloved or distreated. Reporter believe it or not, the babies have grown a lot since they were first born. The biggest now well over 4 pounds. This is dayton. She was the one no one could see on the ultrasound. She was born less than 2 pounds and now she is 3. 1 and doctors say she should be going home by the end of the month. The proud new parents brought three of the five home to a very excited welcoming committee. I want to enjoy this time and love all of them right now and give them everything that they need. I know you have multiples running in your families but surely you didnt expect this. Youre absolutely right we did not expect this. Multiples run very high in the family. My mother miscarried triplets just prior to myself. So were not shocked to have the twins. We wouldnt have been that shocked to have had twins again but we could have never expected this. Do i have it right that you wanted a big family . Maybe you even wanted to have nine perhaps one by one or two by two. Oh, yes. Absolutely. I wanted a large family. Again, no one expects that overnight but i wanted a large family. It was just imbedded in me at birth from everyone in the family having babies, i kept their babies, so this is just a blessing from god. It really is. Its a dream come true. We walked it with the camera crew about nine times before we brought actors in to do it. We were meticulous. Any close calls . Not that its an addiction of something that needs to be fixed but its using more of the examination of ourselves, how we interact with others, how we interact with life through performance and through the lenses of a book but it is a book of fiction. Its not a recovery book. Its a book of fiction. Its a novel. However theres a character named james franco. Is it the real james franco . No. In air quotes . Well, hes not a big character in there. He just pops up a little bit. That was ironic because i read one of your favorite books is called this is not a novel. So i thought maybe this is like that. Well, the structure. There are sections in this book that are just little statements and that was very influenced by david marks in this is not a novel. Theres even a point and we all remember this 2009 photo of you appearing to sleep in class. And i dont know if its score settling but you got to explain what that picture was all about. What is the reason for his hope . Salvation. See, god never intended for us to die. He never intended us to be sick. He never intended us to go through pain and suffering in this world but sin has separated us from god. And the bible tells us that god loves us. That god gave his son to take our sins. Jesus christ came on a rescue mission to take your sins and my sin and died on the cross and was buried and god raised him to life. People dont understand that god is willing and eager and he wants to forgive sin and who would refuse being saved from a drowning . Who would refuse being saved if your car was on fire and the firemen were there to pull you out. God wants to save us. And theres that sense in all religious faith and tradition the idea that we all seek in our lives to become whole. Were not perfect but were trying. That were on a path. What does billy graham think he was rescued for . First of all, he was rescued from sin. And i believe god has used my father hell be 95 november 7th and he is still sharp as a tack. Still writing. Just finished a film which will be released all across the country. But my father wants people to know the truth. And theres lots of religions but theres only one person to take your sin. Theres not many people that died for your sin. Only one person and that is jesus christ. He said im the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the father but by me. This book is not a cut and paste book of earlier writings. Its a new book and fresh. He has gotten so much wiser and smarter and he is just sharing a little bit of it with us. How is he . He doesnt preach anymore in person. No, he cant stand in the pulpit at 95. I tried to get him to get a hamburger. He said you wait until you turn 95. He said i just want to sit in a chair. I understand that. But he still works and his mind is clear and he wants to share with another generation how we can have peace with god and the only way we can have peace with god is through his son christ. He is of course known, among other things, as a preacher to our president s and cut across ideological lines. How do you think he was able to achieve that . Because he always went to visit a president with the focus of ministering to them spiritually. Every president has questions just like you or me or anyone else. Does god know who i am . Does he care . How can i talk to him . Will he give me advice . And my father would counsel them on spiritual issues. Youre always going to be around a politician that wants to talk politics at some point but my father would try to get the conversation back to where their soul was. Was their soul secure . Were they sure their soul was in the hands of almighty god and if they werent sure my father would help them have that assurance through faith in christ. You had varying degrees of commitment. Well you guys are on it. So then what were going to do is keep your whisk. Cant stop whisking. Put it right on your pasta. Make sure its cooked and a al dente. It has the hollow middle so the cheese gets in there and the grooves are important so it binds to the cheese. Let it cool. Dont want it to melt the final ingredient which oh my gosh. Dont double dip. Out, out. We plan to eat this. The reason you dont want these to melt is later you want people to bite into these morsels of cheese. Then lay it out in a pan just like this. Were going to create a much more denser oh, i see. It has to be a solid. Let that cool for just an hour. This is the best part. Cut out circles for me. You dont really ever cook it. You let it sit there. And were going to cook it again in the frying pan in a second. Pop that out. Its like a hockey puck. Youre going to put it in seasoned flour. Okay. Follow me now. You guys are hungry. We want to do this. Flour and then cover it in egg. Did you say seasoned flour . Yes just a pinch of salt and pepper. Okay. And ill put it in bread crumbs so were creating this amazing crunch. Its going to go right into the frying pan. Dont get it on me. Okay. I said ill write an album about a guy in despair on the beach and an hour before sunset and through the beauty of the night he regains his joy of life. But each song is an individual song. I used that as a scenario to hang the hooks that the songs needed. Where does this spoken word thing come from . You said i cant sustain a note to sing but i have music in my soul. Some people probably heard you do this in the price line commercials and thought this is a spoof but this is how you express yourself. Theres a fine line between spoofing and being real. Im not spoofing in the album but since it caused controversy of is he trying to sing or talk, language has a musicality. Language has a rhythm. Youre dealing with it all the time and its musical. And run as much water as you need to get rid of the vinegar. Next crime, wearing clothes multiple times between washes. Jeans and stuff. As long as youre not wearing under wear multiple times but apparently 40 of people admitted to occasionally wearing their underwear multiple times. When youre in college. When moms no longer doing laundry its acceptable but also dont throw a dirty shirt into the dirty clothes and then pull it out. Once its in the dirty basket its not coming back until its washed. Yeah. What about eating at your desk . Thats something we all do. Yeah, totally. So its like all the sauces and the dressings and any kind of oil that can splash on to your keyboard overtime is a conducive environment for things like staph and strep and any bacteria. Im going to keep eating at my desk. Thats not going to stop. An alcohol based cleaner, wipe it down once a week. Okay. What about the blender, this is something people dont think. All of these part versus to come apart. Just smash it. Thats the best way to clean it. Its what happened if people just wash out the inside. They found these are some of the dirtiest spots in the kitchen because when you wash this out, if you dont take this off, bacteria gets all around there. And this thing too. You need to get it off and take that off. If you turn it on, youre shooting all of the bacteria growing for weeks into your margarita and smoothies. Good stuff. Yum. So take that off every time. Really quickly, cutting boards. Yeah, cutting board for me, thats a real problem because its poris and hard to clean. You have to use a plastic cutting board. You ruined everyones coffee maker. What i did was reinforced the flavor profile. Toasted fennel seeds and crushed red pepper. I started with pancheta first and caramelized it. Just regular sausage. Regular pork sausage, Italian Sausage and reinforce the flavor profile with more fennel. I have a little bit of olive oil in the pan. Added the pork to that. Now i just added a touch of garlic and well caramelize it nicely. Let that cook four or five minutes or so. Its nice and brown and caramelized and full flavor but not brown garlic. And then i have it cooking here. Im going to add this right to the pan. Why do you like that pasta . Well, this shape, like you said its a really classic flavor profile. Especially in the heel of the foot of italy. But, you know, i love that and really starting with the principles of that cuisine and then things that are updated and fresh and vibrant. Here we have beans and beautiful peas and we add that here. Beautiful color, too. Great colors. Good flavor. You do that only at the end, right . Just at the end. You dont want to lose that. Fresh mint here. Just a pop of brightness in addition to the great flavors and sweetness of the peas. A lot of chefs do that more and more. Add the pasta water back in. Thats the way to do it. If you think about it, we should always salt the water so it tastes like broth. Not the ocean because thats too salty. My mother told me broth. Do you put olive oil in it too . No olive oil. Good quality pasta will never stick. The good stuff doesnt stick. Good to know. Good to know. And then of course we saute it all together. Now, you see the good pasta c k cooking liquid, its absorbing the flavor. Its all good stuff. Well add a little parmesan cheese. I got those at the Farmers Market this weekend.
