Ukraines new interior minister today posted an arrest warrant for president Viktor Yanukovych for mass murder. But where is he . Footage shows the moment yanukovych left kiev left last week with suitcases. National security adviser susan rice told meet the press, as far as washington is concerned, yanukovych is no longer president. This is an interesting and complicated situation as you know. And todays highs, temperatures will be about 15 degrees below in minneapolis, bismarck, 25 degrees below average. Tomorrow morning, we look for those temperatures to continue plunging. Drug kingpin el chapo, his arrest has huge implications around the world. And comes from help from u. S. Agencies. Mark potter has details. Reporter new details this morning about the dramatic arrest of mexican kingpin Joaquin Guzman known as el chapo or shorty. Theyve been hot on his heels for the last few weeks. They claim to have just missed him after raiding a safe house recently. Guzman had escaped climbing through tup tunnels leading away from the house. This video released by the Mexican Attorney Generals Office shows a stairway heading down to a tunnel which connects to a city drainage system. On saturday morning, guzmans luck ran out when Mexican Marines captured him in the resort town of mazatalan. For drug agents, a huge catch. Chapo guzman is the most prolific trafficker of heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana in the world. Reporter he supplies most of the elicit drugs crossing the u. S. Border. Hes been indicted in half dozen american cities. Forbes magazines labeled him one of the worlds richest men. And in 2001, guzman escaped from a maximum security prison. From a laundry truck. Opening statements begin today in the driving trial of robert f. Kennedys daughter Kerry Kennedy. And it stems from a 2012 accident in north castle, new york, about an hour north of manhattan. Nbcs katy tur with the latest on this story. Good morning, savannah. The 54yearold facing a misdemeanor driving under the influence charge she said was the result of a mixup with her medication. Medication. Shes fine and ready to go to trial and hopefully happy to get this over with. Reporter Kerry Kennedy due in court later today on trial for a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of a drug that stems from a july 2012 accident in which kennedys car side swiped a tractor trailer in new yorks west chester county. I remember getting on the highway and then i have no memory until i was stopped at a traffic light and a Police Officer was at my car door. Reporter officers described her as, quote, swaying and she had impaired speech. A toxicology report showed that kennedy had small traces of a generic form of ambien in her bloodstream. I told the officer it was theoretically possible that i had mistakenly taken an ambien rather than a thyroid pill earlier that morning. Reporter kennedys lawyers says that she occasionally takes the medicine when flying internationally. He argues that that medication and her thyroid medication come in similar prescription bottles and the pills are a similar shape and color. It is not a crime if its an accidental ingestion. If the jury believes that she didnt knowingly take this, then that would be the heart of the defense, the crux of the defense in this case, then the jury would have to acquit. Reporter while prosecutors are expected to argue that once kennedy began to feel drowsy from the medication, she shouldve gotten off the road. Kennedys legal team turned down a plea deal that wouldve resulted in a threemonth suspension on her license. If convicted, she could face a year in jail, fines, and also a suspended license. Now her brother rfk jr. Is coming to her defense arguing a conviction could be devastating to the humanitarian work she does abroad. And there were no injuries in the original accident. The American Flag is flying at halfstaff at Berkeley Hills fire station number 7. Last night fellow firefighters stood with hands over hearts as the vehicle carrying the body of their fallen comrade sped past. The firefighter was driving a tractor on a ranch on his time off when the vehicle went over an embankment and rolled 200 feet. Emergency responders found him pinned beneath the tractor. This morning the San Jose Council will consider a strategy to get homeless men and women off the street. It wants to put some of them up in local hotels and motels potentially for years. The city figures it costs about 1 million a year to help 60 people. Lets begin this half hour, though, with the latest on the murder conviction of amanda knox. With yet another appeal on the horizon. Some wonder if knoxs exboyfriend is now trying to distance himself from her. Joe fryer has that story. Reporter for more than six years rafael soicito defended his then girlfriend, amanda knox, in the murder of her roommate, meredith kercher. But in a new interview, he says he does have some questions about knoxs behavior before kerchers body was found. He says after knox spent the night at his place, she went home to shower. When she returned hours later, he says knox was very agitated saying her front door had been broken into and she found small bloodstains in the bathroom. Certainly i asked her questions, he says, why did you take a shower . Why did she spend so much time there . The reporter later asks what answers do you give yourself. And he responds, i dont have answers. I think hes distancing himself from her. Hes saying that there is some evidence that may apply to her, doesnt apply to him. Reporter a year ago, he raised similar concerns about knoxs behavior in his book. But in an appearance with savannah on today says hes never doubted her. The real facts are that we are innocent. Reporter they were convicted of murder in 2009, found innocent by an Appeals Court in 2011, then found guilty again this year. In her blog this month, knox rejected claims he was distancing himself. But does say hes frustrated pointing to an email she recently received from him in which he maintains theyre both innocent but says i dont want to be punished for nor have to continue to justify those things that regard you and not me. Knox now hopes on appeal shell be found innocent again. There was no evidence then. There is no evidence now. And there never will be any evidence. Good news is, we are seeing a change in the weather patterns for our friends out west. Because it has been brutally dry. We would normally between july 1st through today see anywhere from 6 inches to a foot and a half of rain from santa barbara. But look at this, some areas, burbank, only a half inch of rain. Santa ana 1 1 4 inches of rain. And to the north where the growing takes place in california, we would normally have upwards of 2 1 2 feet of rain. Look at what theyve gotten so far. I mean, some areas only a fifth of what they should get. But the good news is, were seeing a change. Were going to see some major storms developing out in the pacific. Three major storms. Storm number one will make its way in the gulf of alaska. Storm number two makes its way into central and Southern California bringing heavy rain, storm number three, this one brings relief all the way down as far south as los angeles and san diego. And look at the rainfall amounts. Wont break the drought, but some areas picking up to 6 inches of rain from fresno. Three inches as far south as los angeles. And thats great news. And i started by asking him what it would be like when he hears now the host of late night seth meyers for the first time. I think ill go into a full panic the first time. And well probably have security guards behind me to make sure i cant make tracks quickly out the other direction. For more than a decade, seth meyers has made us laugh on saturday night live. America knows him best as snls head writer and host of weekend update. Im seth meyers and here are tonights top stories. Hes been called funny killing it each week as the straight man. I guess i just miss him this time of year. I never knew you had a family. Thought you were built by gay scientists. I actually read an article and the writer paid you a great compliment. Turns out the most popular seth meyers character is seth meyers. I have very little range. Thats a kind way of saying it. No range, no problem. Meyers is the comedic genius behind some of the most memorable sketches on snl in the last decade. Many played by his friends tina fey and amy poehler. And i can see russia from my house. So what can we expect from late night host seth meyers . Do you see yourself as more of the iconic host . Like the Conan Letterman . I dont know. I think thats one of the things you dont overthink your own persona. You make the decisions you would make on your own tastes and that leads to the kind of show itll be. Do you think well be seeing my favorite thing from weekend update which is really . I think youll see that sentiment. I dont know if youll see it actually in that structure. But i promise to be incredulous about current events. That unique seth meyers brand. I would love to have sort of a long list of politicians coming on the show. Somebody like Chris Christie would be interesting to talk to him right now. And then, you know, wed love to have authors, athletes, as well as obviously people from show business. I could probably get you al roker. Dont joke about this. No, im serious. I know him. Im sorry. I just never thought id get al roker. What does he get . Respect and lots of it. A closer look at body image. Why were our toughest critics on ourselves. We want you to join this conversation as we share how we really feel sometimes about our looks. I have the exact body my dad had. My body is healthy, thankfully. Strong and healthy. Average. 40, its okay. Its not good and its not terrible. Its fine. Subpar. Ive got a forehead you could show a drivein movie on. My body, aging. When i was younger, i didnt like i was so tall. I actually tried to drink coffee because i had heard that it stunted your growth. Obviously, that didnt work out so well for me. But i have now a lifelong coffee addiction. I had a big head in high school, they called me jug head. I wore braces for six years. Kids would say big teeth or rabbit teeth. I had a serious case of buck teeth. My smile was something i was always insecure about. I was the kid with the crazy, frizzy hair, the stop sign glasses and the weird name. Like the trifecta of woof. Weight is a big issue. And ive always been heavy and as i got older, i got heavier. At times when i was a young kid, a lack of weight was an issue. And i was skinny. Not just thin, i was skinny. We had something in our family, we called them wuggies. That little place right at the top of the thighs just a little too much on there, that love. You know . I was a tall, scrawny kid. I looked exactly like Anthony Michael hall in sixteen candles. I think im like every woman in america who has things they dont love about their bodies. If you would ask me this before my children, i would have said my thighs. But since csections, the stomach. I was heavy and lost weight. But i dont ever feel like the girl who lost weight. There are lots of things well never love about ourselves. Who are we kidding . We can pretend all day long we like that we have cellulite. Im never going to like that. But you know what, i try not to wear a bathing suit in public. Thats my gift to america. After youve had two csections, some things dont go back, you know, the way should have been. So ive got a little pooch sometimes that, you know, i stillbirthed two incredibly happy, healthy children. Im so thankful. Its what my mother told me, my aunt told me. We all have something, why focus on it . The hair thing bothered me for a short period of time. There was a time when i had too much hair. I had this awful thing going on there. And i had people used to make jokes when theyd see a picture of me from behind. You can pick matt out, thats matt right there with the bald spot. I think if you have something about yourself you find unsatisfactory, youve got to either deal with it or get over it. So i woke up one day and said lets cut it off. Welcome back, how was your vacation . It was fantastic. I think it looks fantastic. I think it was the healthiest thing ive ever done in terms of my appearance. I think you reach a certain age, this is the body i have, lets make the most of it, have fun with it, play some basketball, play some football. And at the end of the day, i think im probably right about the right height. 64 is a good height where youre tall, but not too tall. My ears, nice and close to the head. Never caused me a problem in my life. Great ears. My hands because my nephew says i have my mothers hands. You have grandmas hands. And it touched my heart and become my favorite part of my body. Now i like my height. I tower over everybody all the time on the today show and i go with it. I dont think too much about myself. I know its a real selfie world right now. But i try to focus on the beauty in other people. When i think of beauty, i think of my wife. Beauty is inside out. Its when your eyes light up and you give off joy. To me, you look at someone and you go thats beautiful. We are what we are inside. I tend to concentrate on that. I think of whats behind the eyes. After time you fight it, but after time you learn to love it and accept it and appreciate the greatness that your body is always going to have. Fathers, as well. Our bodies all that. We just talked about something a little earlier, 335 hours a year are spent on appearance if youre a woman, but only 100 hours less if youre a guy. Does that surprise the men on the set here . Yeah, i didnt think we spent that much time. Thats a lot. Only 16 minutes less per day. I was surprised men spend that much time. Is it important for us as guys . I think the caricatures we dont care. I think it is more than youre willing to admit. Wed be lying if we said we didnt care the way we look, especially in the business were in. But i dont put that much time a day. David gregory i also think guys think they look better than they do. Yeah. Its the point you make, al, turns out men are fatter than women. But most of the time its inverted in how we perceive. For those of you with daughters. In the survey, 85 of teen girls say they worry about their appearance weekly, 72 say daily. For boys, its a lot, lot less. So what do we tell our daughters . So they have the right body image . We never talk about looks. We talk about being smart, we talk about being kind and generous and looking out for other people. Its not something we talk about or focus on. Absolutely. I do the same with my niece. How do you feel going into it . And do you think the other judges . Adam and blake are taking the gloves off now, maybe taking it easy on you before but not anymore . No, i think theyre enjoying a high moment. Blake is won it a few times, adam won the last season and the first. For me more than anything im happy my audience gets a chance to see me in a different way. For many years, people know me through music. Now you get a chance to see me in a different light but still in music. But just really enjoying mentoring talent and just giving a different aspect to what Reality Television is, you know. Its a perfect fit for you because you were mentoring before you were doing it on the voice, something thats important to you. Do you think that the voice has been able to turn out a huge star yet . Thats the one criticism i ever hear of it. You dont have a Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood yet. More than anything, youre learning the process and you have to stay tuned. This season hopefully well be able to introduce some new things greater than that, not to compare to other shows, but this one is so positive. And it doesnt really highlight, i guess, us tearing the talent down but building the talent up. And with the support of america and Online Purchases as well as do downloads and instagrams. Its being connected with not only our core base but also, too, introducing people in a light that would represent them, you know, successful on the show or have a career afterwards. People talk about, its difficult to take a great book and turn into a great movie and now nbc is taking the book to a movie to this sitcom. Its not a traditional sitcom, though, it feels to me. No, its not. I think through parenthood and friday night lights, hes got a handle on how you effortlessly bring characters into the medium that youre working in. And its story telling at its best. Created these amazing characters and used that as a jumping off point. Fiona is neurotic a little, maybe. A lot. Overprotective maybe a little. A lot. Shes a vegan, what else do i need to know . Shes somehow everyone knows someone a bit like fiona this day and age where there is theyve embraced their lifestyle to the point of sort of hilarious selfrighteousness. When youre wafting someone elses barbecue smoke back into their yard, you know youve got a problem and its quite funny. You need to get a grip. Shes a mom, i mentioned, single mom. You are a mom. And this schedule works for you . This doing this show. You have a 5yearold. I do. And i listen, this is the most amazing job for me to be able to be home sleeping in my bed at night, making it to some of his sporting events, sometimes being able to take him to school. Its pretty great. In fact, its very great. This was kind of a week where were talking about body image here on the today show. Youre in a business and have been for a while now that puts a lot of emphasis on appearance. Yes. Youve dealt with this in the past. Yes. What advice would you give a teenager or a young adult in terms of trying to be comfortable with themselves . Dont get taken in by the assault of images that are out there now telling you what it is you are supposed to be. Everyone has a different body type. And figuring out where you where you lie is your only job. Not comparing yourself to the teeny weeny romanian model when youre 6 feet and a volleyball player. My mom says i was the only kid born there that day. The town is so tiny, that wouldnt surprise me. I grew up in a big family. My aunts, uncles, cousins, my mom, my grandfather. These people were always around me, always encouraging me. She was just outgoing little girl. She was always sweet. Stop by and see us. I Love Learning and talking to other people. So those things i naturally enjoy just snapped into place in my career. From what family members and neighbors my work as a reporter for four years in dallasft. Worth. I was on the phone calling all my siblings and friends. I said, look, there she is. And from there, i ended up in chicago. Welcome back, the time right now anchoring a fourhour morning show. Everything i thought morning tv could and would be. You do become a part of the family. I want to welcome my new colleague tamron hall. The year before i started working for msnbc, i brought my mom to new york and outside of rockefeller center, my mom pointed up and said next year youre going to be working here. And i said, yeah right, mom. And my best friend sonia snapped a picture. I had a feeling tamron would be there. And it happened. One year to that day, i was in the office with the president of nbc for my first interview that turned into my job. She really did it. She really made it. Super proud. Super proud of her. Its hard to believe this happened in this country. But these what we call sun downtowns. They were all White Communities that africanamericans were not allowed to live in or even visit after dark. And surprisingly enough, they werent where you would expect them to be down south. They were up north in ohio and illinois, places like that. Towns in indiana, illinois, ohio, to find out theres word these practices still do exist. And he was starting an investigation. Joined by an expert in the field. One of the most surprising aspects of this phenomenon is the assumption these towns only existed in the south. The truth is, most of them were in northern states such as new york, connecticut, ohio, indiana and illinois among others. More importantly, though, convinced these towns still exist today, and im determined to find out if hes right. And its basically a road trip into history and injustice to find out whether they do or not. Its really, really fascinating. I grew up way off in the country working on farm and playing hockey. But theres always a sense of community and its always bigger than yourself, i think, anyway. Youre never really trying to find the spotlight. And youre always trying to chip in and help each other out. And i think its, you know, more of that. We didnt even i didnt grow up in a town. I grew up way off in the woods. Which explains a lot. A lot of that confidence you have. A little bit. A little bit. But you carry that with you wherever you go and it translates well into acting. This morning the American Flag is flying at half staff at the Berkley Hills fire station number 7 in honor of tony nunez. Last night, fellow firefighters stood with their hands over their hearts as a vehicle car reing the body of nunez sped fast. He was driving a factor on a ranch in his off time when the vehicle went over an embankment and rolled about 200 feet. Emergency responders found his body beneath a piece of the tractor, declared him dead at the scene. This morning, the San Jose City council will consider a new strategy to get homeless men and women off the streets. It wants to pay to put some of them in local hotels and motels. Did you feel as you were growing up that pressure to stay thin . I dont know. I mean, in the 90s on blossom from the ages 14 to 19. The industry was different for teenagers then. There wasnt the internet, wasnt this publicity machine putting so much attention on teenage girls to look like adult women. And i think thats one of the big differences ive seen. Is now we have all that pressure for teenagers to look like women and the model for women seems to be, yes, thin thin, thin. In hollywood, there seems to be a standard of beauty. Did you feel pressure to look a certain way . If there was, i didnt do any of the things that wouldve made me look like other people. I was a funnylooking kid with large features and i was what was considered ethnic when i started acting in the late 80s. Kids didnt look like me on television. I didnt have success in commercials and things like that. I got character roles, which is what they call roles for people who dont look like leading girls or leading boys. Thats kind of, i guess, been my schtick. It worked. Certainly look, you are a role model on the Big Bang Theory as a smart, funny, young woman. And now its led you to the vegan table. Tell us how did you make this journey . Gosh. Well, its been a long journey. After blossom, i got a ph. D. From ucla in neuroscience. I had a career as a scientist, came back to the world of acting after i had my two sons. And ive been vegetarian since i was 19 and vegans been a slow progression. But raised my boys vegan and this book is literally the recipes that i make for nonvegans that they ask for more of. Yes, there are plenty of healthy recipes, but also a lot of fun recipes that have a lot of rich flavors. Everyone should be eating more fruits, vegetables, less processed foods. Less animal fats. Every Major Medical organization agrees on that whether or not youre vegan or not. This book is an opportunity to present the things i actually cook that happen to be plantbased that also still have good flavor that wont make people say, like, oh, thanks for that weird vegan now the mac cheese in this. I was invited to a rare thing for me to come back into the city on a friday night and have a dinner, but craig hatcoff is married to jane rosenthal, invited me and maybe 20 people to come it a dinner at the lambs club in new york, beautiful, beautiful room, in honor of glenn beck, who is a controversial gentleman, but as i have befriended him in the last few years and have great affection for him and apparently so does craig, so do it was so fascinating to be in a room with so many people coming from completely different ideological places, all coming together to say, wait a minute, our country is in trouble, where is our common ground, because thats where our sacred ground is. Everybody contributed. Everybody was respectful, everybody was it was powerful because it was powerful. Im grateful he invited us to come. And then cassie texted me the next night, the next day, oh, mom, i heard you had dinner with my friend from colleges father last night, a small world. She was having dinner with her so it was lovely. I didnt eat much. I was so norm kamali was there, the great designer. Love her. Such a funny woman. Were leaving, she goes, i didnt know you were so smart. Oh, thanks. Anyway. It is the end of the olympics, you guys. They had the closing ceremony. You remember in the Opening Ceremony, there was this big flub where one of the rings didnt open up. I liked it that way. I thought was cute. The russians decided to have fun with it themselves. They made fun with it at the closing ceremony when all the rings except one burst into there it goes. They know how to laugh at themselves. It was clever. The united states, by the way, finished the olympics in great fashion, 28 medals, we were in second in medal count, next to russia and, you know, good there. Going to be interesting to see what all the attention is going to be on kiev now since the coup there. Different time for putin, who was partying one day and trying to clean up a major mess now. I bet he doesnt care that we didnt wear no makeup today. It is body image week. They did an image with cas and i about what we felt about our bodies and it ran in the earlier hours. Part of it. This morning, the American Flag flying at half staff in the Berkley Hills fire station number 7 in honor of tony nunez. Investigators say he was driving a tractor in his off time when he went down an embankment, the tractor flipped and he died.
