Nbc has obtained an internal document showing eight years ago the company ordered a Design Change to fix the problem with its ignition switch and never told its exist iing customers about the problems and never told the government. General motors problems keep growing, along with its list of recalled cars. The nations second biggest automaker is now recalling another 1. 3 million evacuation in the u. S. That may experience a sudden los of electric power steering resulting in a higher risk of a crash. The new list now includes 2004 malibus along with four other gm models. It comes as the ceo is apologizing to their customers. Something went wrong with our process in this instance and terrible things happening. Reporter for failing to recall ignition switches and deaths including 18yearold natasha and 15yearold amy and died after their chevy lost power and crashed into a tree in 2006. These were our children and they just act like they dont matter. They may not have mattered to gm but they mattered to us. Reporter now, tan internal memo showing a design engineer knew about the problem in 2006 and signed a document authorizing the redesign. The engineer was ray degirgio. Under oath, he said he did not know about changes to the switch. If such changes were made, it was made but your knowledge and authorization . That is correct. Reporter this gm document authorizing changes to the switch was signed by degiorgio himself suggesting the company knew about the recall and changed the part and never told gm customers who never knew they were at risk. Now, the witness table is set for todays hearing on capitol hill and Ceo Mary Barra is sure to be grilled. Gm accepted they didnt have this switch to meet their own specifications. We need to ask why that was and what was the reason they went ahead and did it anyways. Reporter gm ceo mary barajas only been on the job a few months and in her prepared speech to lawmakers she says she does not know why it took so long and ordered and independent investigation and will apologize again to those family makers. The no just gm but also the federal regulators, the ones supposed to be watching these Car Companies under fire, right . Reporter yeah. The national highway transportation administration, democrats and republicans want to know why it didnt act when it had complaints and they said they didnt have sufficient evidence to order a recall but they will be on the hot seat also today. A little later the two ships collide the barge spilling 160,000 gallons of oil closing the busy Houston Ship Channel and affecting thousands for days. The girl analogy is not completely accurate. Im trying to make the point youre being beaten to the punch according to you in computerized stock markets. Absolutely. The market moves at two speeds. One for people who pay for access to the exchanges and put their trading machines right next to the black boxes actually now the exchanges and everybody else, where everybody else being the investors in the stock market. Theres a version of this called front running. The version youre talking about in this book you expose in this book is legal and in your opinion, infuriatingly legal. I think we will find out whether its legal or not because the attorney general and the fbi have suddenly opened investigations into the practices. Yes, i mean, it seems like the sec is fully aware of whats going on and it doesnt seem to boer this them that much. Basically you have high volume traders out there investing in the fastest possible technology. In some ways they see your trade before it reaches its destination and go in before you get there. That is exactly what happens. You, the average investor, by that everybody from the guy sitting at his etrade account to the biggest pension and head funds in the world are seeing essenti essentially old prices compared to high speed traders. The market more like realtime are trading against people who dont know the market heres the way you write about it in this book. The u. S. Stock market was now a class system rooted in speed of haves an havenots. The haves paid for nanoseconds. The havenots had no idea that nanoseconds had value. The problem is that the haves arer generating so much money sitting in the middle of the market this way they created a whole echo system around themselves on wall street. They pay the exchanges and pay as soon as this profitable bu business arose, it created its own logic why shouldnt i applaud these guys for using technology to their best advantage . Isnt that what the system is all about . Dont we want speed in trading . We do want speed in trading but we want every dollar to stand the same chance. Its an unfair playing field. Its crazy for investors to be playing with people who have knowledge of the prices before they do. You are shaking a stick and knocking it into the hornets nest. Those hornets are fighting back and stinging. Heres what people are saying in your book. You are misinformed. Youre unfair and irresponsible. You have simplified your story. The Advocacy Organization for High Frequency traders modern markets saying markets are not rigged. Say otherwise is a broad generalization that lumps the vast amount of good market behavior in with a few bad actors. They say the system youre talking about actually provides liquidity in the markets. What else are they going to say. I dont know where to begin there. The story isnt my story. The story in this book is a story of people wall street insiders realize starting 2008 the market is behaving funny. The market on their screen is no longer a market they can act on. Every time they trade the market seems to know what theyre doing before theyre doing. The story is their investigation of the market involving exchanges, people who work the a High Frequency trading firms and people that came out of the banks and appalled of what came out of the system these guys are actually whistleblowers and theyre starting to hear from other whistleblowers from throughout the industry . Were back with more of willies exclusive look at rocky the broadway musical. On monday, we met the actors, this morning, willie catches up with the man himself. Good morning. Good morning, matt. Its one of the great hollywood stories. Nearly 40 years ago, Sylvester Stallone fought hollywood producers who didnt see him as rocky balboa. Well, six rocky movies later, we know how that ended. And stallone had to lace up the gloves again, this time to convince broadway producers who said rocky the musical would never make it to the great white way. Rocky balboa climbing into the ring now, the italian stallion. Reporter 38 years ago, a young actor by the name of Sylvester Stallone created one of the biggest movie franchises ever. To date, the six rocky films have earned over 1 billion at the box office and while the iconic boxing match between rocky balboa and apolo creed is well known to generations of moviegoers, the real fight was finding hollywood producers who wanted to make the film with stallone in the lead role. Get a job. Back then, the names being mentioned to play rocky included burt reynolds, james caan and ryan oneill. They wanted every celebrated actor, they wanted other people to play adrienne like bette midler and cher. And they found out i wanted to be involved, they scattered. Stallone who wrote the rocky script turned down more than 300,000, the equivalent of 1 million today because he refused to sell the project and walk away. At that time, because i was but his decision to hang on to the script until he found producers who would let him play the lead paid off. In 1976, rocky, starring Sylvester Stallone won the oscar for best picture. Literally, i was parking cars ten months earlier, and now here we are. I rented a tuxedo and on the way, tie broke. The driver goes, you want to borrow mine . No. I walk into the oscars looking like vinny bombat. And people go, what arrogance. How dare him going into an establishment. And hes still going against the establishment. At 67, stallone is climbing back into the ring with a new twist on the old story. Hes taken rocky the musical to broadway. Only took me 67 years to get here. Rocky moves slowly. I was influenced by west side story. I always thought, you know, rocky and adrienne was very similar as a love story. And theres so much silence in the movie rocky. A lot of walking, a lot of talking, a lot of thinking, that gives room for song. This time, it was broadway producers who had their doubts. Everyone said, thats a great idea for someone who is a fool because we will never nearly 40 years later, the result is still the same. Sylvester stallones rocky is the last man standing. I love you i love you and the show is already a hit on broadway. Guys, when he went to bring this movie to hollywood, he said he had 106 in his bank account. He said i have to take control of my own destiny. Im not going to do this movie unless i can be in it. He said he had a 40 car that blown up and turned down 100,000 because he wanted to be in it and boy has that paid off. Who has the vision at that moment . You know, to hold out for the big thing. Its amazing. Six movies together have made more than 1. 2 billion. Thats incredible. I think he made the right call. Or about as much as frozen. Right. Willie, thank you. That was cool. Up next, the new exhibit dedicated to the most cringe worthy Awkward Family Photos in the world. But first, this is today on nbc. Well, most of us enjoy looking back at old pictures, but some blasts from the past can be a little cringe worthy. The perfect subject, of course, then, for an unusual art exhibit. The photos are the best of the worst from the website called Awkward Family Photos. Some will make you laugh, others will make you cringe. And each captures a moment that can only happen when families get together for a picture. Its Opening Night for a new Photo Exhibit at the California Heritage museum in santa monica. No famous photographer, no celebrity in the picture, just every day families captured in what can only be described as awkward moments. We look at these pictures as pieces of art in their own way. Doug and mike are cofounders of awkwardfamilyphotos. Com, a website that started with this picture hanging on the wall of mikes parents house and the realization that every family has at least one awkward photo in their past. Theres something cathartic about this experience sending in your photo and saying, do you think your familys awkward . Well, take a look at my family. When they launched the website in 2009, doug and mike were flooded with submissions from crying babies to painful plays and Family Fashion statements. This is the perfect awkward family photo. Number one, matching outfits, number two, the outfits are denim, and number three, they are literally piled on top of each other. The website has already spawned three books, annual calendars, even an Awkward Family Photos app so mike and doug jumped at a chance to exhibit their collection at a museum. Anything that makes people laugh, makes people think is art. One of the featured photos belongs to holly and screams 1976. The photographer took one photo of 5yearold holly with her mother and brother, and a separate profile shot of hollys father and combined the picture in a uniquely 70s way. It does crack me up out of all the pictures taken that day, my parents sat down and looked at this one and said, thats the one. Thats the one were going to hang on the wall. Every photo in the exhibit has its own back story. But the message is universal. Ultimately, its a celebration of family. Its a love letter to families. We all have uncomfortable moments with our family, but we love our family. This is a side of family that is very real and we wanted to expose that to shine a light on it. Okay, guys. He was looking for the restroom. Construction workers spotted him wandering around with two bags looking. He was arrested for public intoxication. An airport official said the man did not pose a risk to passengers since hed gone through airport security, fully screened, just walked out the wrong door and kind of stayed there for 20 minutes looking for his flight. But he was drunk . He was drunk, apparently, allegedly. Allegedly. He was charged. Hasnt been proven. Right. I think if i were him, thats what i would go with. Exactly. I would go with that one. Well, 46yearold Andrew Taylor from london apparently was changing a sail when he fell over the side of the boat into the sea, 2,500 miles from land. This must be them calling a may day. Listen in. Look at the seas. Isnt that crazy . He was in the water for about an hour and a half before his mates were able to pull him to safety. He was wearing a life vest and a dry suit. I dont know what a dry suit is. Its like a scuba suit that keeps you dry. It allows you to stay in much colder waters for longer he was treated for shock and possibly hypothermia but determined he was okay. The best part of this, this is a trooper. You fall asleep on a temperature drop. And when you take a shower too close to bedtime, it heats you up. It silences the signal for sleep. Believe it or not to increase flexibility and lay flat in the bed. So on the floor and do it on the bed. Five minutes before bed. Tossing and turning. Al, most people when they cant sleep at night, theyll lay in bed tossing and turning. If youre tossing and turning, youre not getting good quality sleep and your brain is then associating the bedroom with a place of high alert. So you want to get out of bed, go do something relaxing, walk around, only return to bed when you feel sleepy. I may have been distracted by willie on that thing there, but we talked about exercise before bed . Exercise i thought he was exercising, too. Exercise, we used to say dont exercise three hours before bed. A National Sleep Foundation Poll found that if you exercise any time of day, its great for sleep. Yes, rob jones suffered an injury while deployed but never gave up on life. Thats right, tamron. And now he wants to pay it forward and help those organizations that never gave up on him. When i first came to, i wasnt coherent. It was kind of a separation of mind and body, so to speak. Marine combat engineer rob jones entered the corps right out of college deploying twice to the middle east. My job as combat engineer, to clear the area for everybody else so we can get through it safely. A dangerous job, it led to a devastating life changing event. An ied exploding right under rob resulting in above the knee amputations of both legs. And everybody thought i was going to die or anything, i dont know why, obviously it was likely i could have. It never really crossed my mind. Rob wasnt about to give up on his life, though. I didnt spend a whole lot of time about being distraught. I decided to skip that being depressed stuff and get on with it. And get on with it, he did. Rob joined the National Rowing team. And not only competed but won a bronze medal in the 2012 london paralympic games. Then it was time for a new challenge. Rob had special legs made for him to be able to pedal a standard bike so he could embark on an ambitious Cross Country ride. Starting in maine and ending in san diego raising money for the charities that gave him the tools to go on living. I cant say enough great things about rob and what an inspiration he is. Hes trying to soar above and do things that most people with two perfectly good legs wouldnt do. I believe in leading from the front and hope people can see what im doing and use it to make a difference in their own lives. With the help of his little brother, steve. Driving a support truck behind him, hes spent the last few months traversing our country. In wind, snow and ice. There have been a lot of times where ive been tired of it and i want to stop, but i never actually want to quit. And the support robs received along the way has helped keep his spirits up. I knew people would be supportive, but i never thought id have people lining the streets. From people cheering him on to ride alongs, even police escorts. Part of the reason i wanted to show that americans Work Together toward a goal, we can do anything. Robs story has inspired other fellow veteran amputees. You see these guys always smiling and, happy and making jokes. And its inspiring others that theres a reason for us to stay alive and go forward. With just under 500 miles to go, the end is in sight and robs already thinking about his next challenge. Triathlon is entering the 2016 paralympics. I might try that. You want to figure out if its a good fit academically. Revisit the school. Exactly. This is the time to visit if you havent visited and youre one of those lucky kids thats looking at multiple offers. But then we also tell kids, you might want to revisit schools because if youre on the fence, this is a great time to do that gut check. I love what you said about financial aid. There is so much aid available these days, which makes opportunity for people who otherwise wouldnt have it. You say you can kind of pit schools against each other and negotiate a little bit. Exactly. So this is now the balls in your court, right . Youve been admitted, they want you to come. This is when you have to use all everything in your control. If you love school x more than school y but school y gave you a better offer. You can call school x and say can you match the offer from school y . Create that bidding war. They want you to come. This is your time theyre receptive to that . Absolutely. Is that part of the big money talk you say kids and their parents should have . Yes. Right now, this might be the first time that parents are talking to their kids about realistically about what their finances are. And they have to have that conversation about what theyre going to contribute and what they expect their students to contribute. Maybe the Student Needs to take an on campus job or sell their car from high school. But also, its important for parents to create a budget. Its not just tuition, room and board. We advise parents to think 10 more than that. Theres transportation, cell phone, off campus activities. And you want to stick your kids into that budget and dont just keep replenishing their bank accounts. A lot of kids on wait lists of their dream school. What can they be doing while on that waitlist . Well, the first thing, writing a letter to the school. And if its your first choice school, let the school know, hey, i will definitely come if im admitted from the waitlist. But they still need to enroll somewhere by may 1st. They have to deposit somewhere. Theyre not going to find out about the waitlist until june or july. They might lose that deposit. Its very important for students to keep up their grades and do well on their final exams and a. P. Which begs the question, why in the world would you open yourself up to that, if it is such an, indeed, terrible, trying time in your life, why make it worse, why complicate it with cameras everywhere. And i dont understand docuseries as opposed to reality how do they differentiate . It sounds more high brow, doesnt it . It is the same thing. Same thing probably. I like tori. Ive grown to see how hard she she is a hard working girl, and she loves this man, loves these kids, from all accounts shes a terrific mom. But it is almost like Gwyneth Paltrow and chris martin right now, what they want, you know, to document everything theyre going through right now their life is documented. I find it weird, with more and more Reality Stars we meet and tori is an actress, shes known more for her reality stuff, they seem to divide their life up in seasons. When we meet them, how are you doing . Oh, my god, were in season nine. They break up their lives like that. It is not even theyre saying youre not going to know that i broke up with my boyfriend, thats in the third one coming up. So in a sense, ironically, they lose their very sense of reality. And i do think if you thats deep. Write it down. If you really want to repair your relationship, i dont think a docuseries. Lindsay is trying to do that now and other people are trying to fix, repair, mend themselves through television series. I cant imagine that really works in the long haul. May work right now because we want to see what its like and there are people who are going through divorces who may watch t o ori and dean and say, oh, these are the tools they used, maybe we can try that. Having been through tough stuff in my own life, being well known when that happened already, the best thing i did was went away, shut it down, go home, lock your doors, turn off the tv, dont read anything, and work at what makes you happy, which is your family and your marriage and and i dont think i would be married if i hadnt done that. And i also i think i know for sure my kids would not be what they are today had they been forced to be exposed. I just think it is you pay a horrendously high price. When the session was over and i was packing up, bob dylan asked bob johnson, the producer, where is he going . He said, i have another guitar player coming in. He said i dont want another guitar player, i want him. Wow. It was the greatest nine words that ever had been spoken over me at the time. You ended up doing two albums with him. Three albums, yeah. Altogether. National skyline, selfportrait and new morning. It was just he was always kind of putting players names on the back of the albums. Hes the kind of artist people wanted to know everything about. Flip the album over and look and there was my name. So it legitimized me quite a bit. He also wanted players to play his music their way, total freedom. Yeah. His songs, but your way to play it. Go for it. And your fiddle is sitting there on the side table. You like to play that . Oh, yeah, yeah. What i like about this cd, it is acoustic. First time you have done an acoustic album as well. Thats why we called it off the grid, doing it dylan. Can you play a little mr. Tambourine man or something. Lets go back a little farther than that. Okay. Oh, wow. Now, do you still go out and play . Yes, im doing 100 dates this year and ten grand ole opry appearances. The crowds must be crazy for you. Our crowds, we have got i have a special part of our fan club called century club. And when you come to 100 shows over the years, i give you a belt buckle. You would be surprised how many i passed out. Youre kidding. Youve been together a long time. 39 years now. And the youngest member, the newest member for three years. Do they ever tease you about your mothers stuffing . They better not tease me about my mothers stuffing. I make stuffing. You do . Corn bread. Im a horrible cook you make good stuffing . Yeah, maam. Make your eyeballs come out. Guaranteed. I went down to the dressing room to say hello to you and the first thing i notice, you tell someone what theyre like right away. Youre so kind to everybody who walks in. When we were taking a picture you said, wait, do you want me in the picture. Everybody was like, you are the picture. Thats your personality. Im just an old country boy that gods been very good to and i just i love people. I honestly do. I dont hate anybody. I hate some things people do sometimes, but i dont hate anybody. Love everybody. And still loving what youre doing after all these years. Still loving what im doing. And bob called him and said he was excited hes going to do the album. Thank you so much for coming to see us.
