Gunfire echoed through the halls the parliament as chaos ruled the Canadian Capital agains wednesday morning at the National War Memorial. I thought it was fire crackers going off. One guard shot down, later died identified as Corporal Nathan cirillo, a reservist, father, and animal lover. He was standing guard just minutes before the shooting. Secret Service Officials identified the latest fence jumper as a 23yearold, unarmed, but fought back against k9 units who attacked him. Fresh anger after the department of Homeland Security Inspector General found three years ago there was a serious lapse in judgment that could have jeopardized the president s security. This stunning video captured by fox news shows the latest fence jumper kicking and punching the dogs who attacked him, a stark contrast to last months fence jumping incident with no dogs released. It is yet another secret breach as they repair their image. Outrage expressed over the government report that slams the agency for misconduct three years ago. With Recreational Marijuana now legal in colorado and washington state, concerns that potlaced candy could end up in the halloween hands of little ghosts, pirates, and princesses there. I think this concept of no rescue is a return to typically the way parents parented before we all became hypercompetitively obsessed with not having our children fail at anything. Reporter so the question is to rescue or not to rescue. Hi, how are you . Youve got five kids. I do. So i understand this is a little bit more. Define it for me. What counts and what doesnt count . Okay. So obviously lets say hypothetically your child is stuck in a vending machine, you help your child. I characterize snowplow parenting clearing the way of all obstacles. You shouldnt do that. Your kid is late for an important tryout for a baseball or basketball team. You let him be late and miss the tryout. You dont take a winter coat to the kid on the field trip that forgot . How cold is it . Did you reach your limit . Is that how this started . I did. I had a weekly schlep back and forth for bringing a cello which is a heavy instrument or a coat. I said you need to take more responsibility for what youre doing. Its not mine. Im assuming this did happen over and over again. After you stepped in and helped them, while you were still doing that, how did you feel afterwards . Well, i felt aggravated. I felt i had helped them. So you address the symptom, but not the underlying problem. The underlying problem is their forgetfulness. I was trying to figure how to address that underlying issue. Now, after youve done the no rescue method for awhile and youve allowed them to fail or miss a homework assignment even if it jeopardizes a grade, how do you feel after that . You know, i feel bad. I feel bad when i get the phone call. I got one phone call from school this year saying i forgot my cello could you bring it. Just tell them you forgot just downstairs, actually. I got an email saying do you know where my notebook is . So there is guilt attached to this even though you think youre doing the right thing for your forgettable children. Yes. I think every parent has this impulse. I dont want to disappoint my child. The problem with helicopter parenting is it takes it too far. Youre not there to accommodate every need. Youre there to help them grow and to be autonomous. My kids are very organized and conscientious. So you wouldnt employ this tactic with them because if they forget something its a rare an honest mistake. Correct. If you have a oneoff instance everybody has a bad day. Everyone deserves help especially from someone who loves them. The issue is more when you have a repeat offender. When you have somebody who keeps on not being responsible for their own stuff. Then you need to address it. What kind of response . This has kind of viral since you put this up. What kind of response have you been hearing from other parents . I think people feel relieved. I think people feel theres this burden of guilt in parenting. And, look, if youre working fulltime outside the home, you cant just respond to every beck and call of your kid. And moreover, not only cant you, but you shouldnt for your kids good. Just to end, know your kid. Not rescuing doesnt mean not helping and be supportive and show your kid you love them.
