But San Franciscos District Attorney is trying something different. He said prosecutors need to think past punishment to rehabilitation. Hes taking his team on regular trips to San Quentin State Prison for face to face meetings with the men they incarcerated. Chris sanchez shows us. Angry mad at the world. Reporter von miles has called the California Department of corrections home for the last 22 years. I was arrested in 1995 for first degree murder. Reporter he said he dedicated those years to selftransformation and is a state certified crisis counselor. A whole lot of remorse and regret. If you sit there like i have sat in there for the past 22 years, bound to change me. Reporter now he sits in an unlikely circle made up of inmates from san quentin and prosecutors from the San FranciscoDistrict Attorneys office. Name is alex. Reporter theyre coming together as part of a new effort meant to humanize the criminal justice system. We need to be punished if we committed a crime. Also were not past being rehabilitated. Reporter the District Attorney has been taking his prosecutors for san quentin for several years now. He says prosecutors have never struggled filling jeail cells bt he believes they miss the mark when it comes to rehabilitation. We have incarcerated more people than any other nation. Its filled. It hasnt necessarily done anything. Reporter recent criminal justice reforms mean more prisoners will be released earlier than expected. Some who expected to die behind bars are now getting a reprieve. He wants his office to help make that transition successful. Maybe we participated in locking you up, but when you come out we want to facilitate you coming back and not going back again. Reporter the collaboration began five years ago inside the newsroom of san quentin news where the former owner of marin cou countys newspaper volunteers. His daughter happens to be a San Francisco prosecutor. My daughter, marissa, is a da. Asked me one day why in the world i spend so much time with a bunch of criminals in san quentin prison. And said well theyre not quite the way you might imagine them. Why dont you come in and have a look. Reporter so she did, with a little bit of apprehension. But after meeting the men inside, she says her attitude changed. Almost like a light bulb went off and i was like we really need to get our leadership and office here at san quentin to see this. Reporter rodriguez began working with inmates to shape the program. We dont walk out of here and go on with our daily lives it impacts us. Reporter the collaboration is the first of its kind in the nation and its making an impact. The das office created a rehabilitation Advisory Board that includes prosecutors and former inmates. We in the right place. Reporter as for von miles, his first parole Board Hearing comes up next year. Hes hoping for a new chance at freedom, saying he wants to give back to the community. A lot of us in here that has done some deep, deep works and we could be very effective in the community. That was Chris Sanchez reporting. The inmate who helped launched the collaboration will be out of prison by next month. He tells us he hopes to convince other District Attorneys to consider the program as well. San franciscos ban on flavored tobacco could be a turning point, now antismoking activists are pushing for ban on the products across california. There are 7,000 different flavors of Tobacco Products on the market right now, including vaping juices sold with ecigarettes. San francisco has banned all of them. Next week oakland takes up the issue. A recent study found 80 of young smokers start the habit by trying a flavored tobacco product. Kids are getting hooked every day by trying these products. It masks the harshness of nicotine it tastes like bubble gum that are definitely marketed as a way to gets kids hooked. Opponents of the ban say it will lead to a robust black market.
