Santa Clara Valley Medical Center announced today that a nurse in the Mother Infant Care Center got sick and tested positive for that disease. Laura anthony explains what patients need to know. Not every baby who was born during this time was exposed to the employee with tuberculosis. Reporter while stopping short of calling it an emergency, officials at the santa Clara Valley Medical Center say its important they proactively treat 350 infants. After they were possibly exposed to a nurse with active tuberculosis tell. Infant have an immature immune system. They dont necessarily localize the infection to their lungs. When a baby gets tuberculosis it can unfortunately get into the blood stream and then travel throughout the body. Reporter hospital is now reaching out to babies and moms who were in the newborn nursery and had contact with the infected nurse between mid august and mid november. The context is babies and thats why the hospital is taking it quite seriously and appropriatelyly so because the babies do need to be carefully evaluated and followed. Reporter the nurse with tb was diagnosed when she underwent treatment for unrelated illness. While she does have active tuberculosis tshe does not have cough and did not have cough.
