There are disturbing new details of Sexual Harassment at uc berkeley involving 19 staff members. Stom of them still work at the university. Alyssa harrington spoke with one of those victims. Its just very hard. Reporter she was heart broken when she learned her Sexual Harassment case at uc berkeley was among several others. I sat and i wondered, you know, what did the victims of these circumstances go through. Was it anything like i went through, was it worse. Reporter documents reveal 17 Sexual Harassment investigations since 2008 involving staff. 11 have resulted in the accused being fired or resigning. These include a custodian, peeking at a woman in the shower. An adjunct professor who sent sexual emails to a student, and a massage therapist touching a womans genitals. She said she was forced to go on leave when she complained about the Law School Dean hugging and kissing her. It was like it was on me to resolve the situation. There was no real interest on the universitys part to protect me as an employee. Reporter among those in the report that kept the job, the diving coach. He was only docked pay when a coworker accused him of making inappropriate sexual comments. Im not here to defend past decisions nor can we turn back the hands of time. In berkeley, alyssa harrington, abc 7 news. Take a look at the aftermath when an outofcontrol dump truck filled with hot asphalt plowed into a converted Apartment Building in sausalito. I heard the very loud sound, which could only be a truck rolling backwards down the hill. This tremendous crash. I said to my husband, honey, somebody, a truck has rolled down the hill and smacked into our garage. Firefighters said the driver lost control when making a turn. He was able to jump out of the truck before the crash, but he fractured an arm. Officials are concerned if they remove the truck, the house will collapse into the home below. Crews have attached a line from the garage roof to a tree hoping to keep it in place for the time being. Our reporter Cornell Bernard will have a report at 11 00 over on channel 7. Certainly a strange situation there tonight. The San Francisco police union has released a survey showing most of the officers polled want tasers. The poll was released as Police Commissioners began Arming Police with them. This is the streaming video provided by the city tonight. Vic lee has more on this new development. Reporter a recent survey reveals that 68 of san franciscans favor tasers for our cops. A marin county Deputy Sheriff is using a taser in this video. Thats what the Police Commission is considering, in its review of lethal force policies. The police union released the radio spot after getting results of a survey it commissioned which shows 68 of those polled supports arming officers with tasers. Only 14 of the 500 San Francisco voters surveyed said they opposed the electronic control devices. 18 were not sure. Our informal survey found similar views. Better than shooting somebody. Its taken too long to get them armed with tasers. Hope to cut down shootings. Reporter Police Union President martin hall oh ran said the polls validate his position that all the officers should be carrying tasers as alternatives if possible to lethal force. Right now sfpd officers go from a baton to a bullet. Reporter so far two of the Police Commissioners have come out publicly against tasers. The main argument being that they could result in medical emergencies and even sudden death. The chief has proposed a narrower policy that only select officers, like the tactical unit, should be equipped with them. Then maybe more later. Im somebody who believes that to go in with some sort of measure of caution whenever youre doing anything new, see how it goes, see if you have any problems, see how you can make it better. Reporter one hurdle to the proposal is the cost of deploying tasers all at once to all officers. When it comes to saving a life, whats the cost on a human life in this city . Reporter Police Commissioners are set to discuss the issue tonight. Vic lee, abc 7 news. Engineers returned to the lower level of the bay bridge today with hightech gear with them. Theyre inspecting the bridges tunnel for any signs of deterioration. In february, a chunk of concrete fell and nearly hit a driver. That certainly raised concern that the tunnel is deteriorating. A team from the feral Highway Commission came in to inspect. Theyre using radar, infrared imaging and echo sound waves to check for corrosion and cracking inside the tunnel walls. The radar can see about 12 inches. So if theres a problem back in the wall itself, the Ground Penetrating radar will be able to see that. Cal trans said water and vibration could be weakening the tunnel walls. But they insist drivers are not in danger while driving through the tunnel. For the first time tonight, the San FranciscoDistrict Attorneys Office is explaining why it let a notorious suspect go before the fbi captured him in a raid last friday. They were caught on camera hitting more than 40 times with their batons last november. Abc 7 News ReporterMelanie Woodrow has more details about the case that youll only see on abc 7. Reporter when fbi agents and sfpd raided this home friday, it wasnt the first time theyd encountered stan i slauf petrov. Prior to the april 1st raid, neighbors said they heard gunshots overnight. A hospital spokesperson confirms christopher mellow passed away last night. Sfpd said they have not identified the suspect in his death. Fbi sources say its unclear what, if any, connection petrov had to the shooting. Their warrants remain sealed but Court Documents from a march raid at the same time reveal more. In this exclusive video on taped by abc 7 news, you can see fbi and sfpd raiding the home march 8th. According to Court Documents, they arrested the two in connection with controlled substances and a firearm. The San FranciscoDistrict Attorneys Office did not charge either. A spokesperson now says the arrests on march 8th were part of an ongoing federal investigation. We did not receive evidence in a timely manner to support the allegations the documents say, and we discharged the case. They remai in federal custody. Their connection to what has now become an sfpd Homicide Investigation unknown. The fbi says it is unable to comment on these latest developments. In the newsroom, hemelanie woodruff, abc 7 news. Police say a man led officers on a highspeed chase with three Young Children and a woman in his car. They stopped the chase because justice began driving into oncoming traffic. He got away. Traffic is moving again along 280 after a shuttle bus carrying apple employees caught fire this morning. Sky 7 was over the road. No one was hurt. Thats the good news. State lawmakers propose using new technology to catch more people driving while high. Not everyone is thrilled about the proposal. Abc 7 News Reporter chris nguyen explains why. Reporter federal Officials Say more people are driving under the influence of drugs than ever before and now local Law Enforcement must be given the tools to get them off the road. This is a quick way to test and see if they are under the influence of something. And then if they fail this particular swab test, they can haul them down to the station for further testing. Reporter a handful of lawmakers are pushing a bill to do a swab test. Republican state senator is the sponsor. We have to have a way for Law Enforcement to quickly determine who is posing a danger to other motorists. Reporter the number of drivers killed in crashes who tested for positive drugs went up by more than 40 . Under state bill 1462, the test would only be used in instances where there is probable cause that a driver is impaired, and if the driver failed a sobriety field test. They wonder if the technology will be accurate. Cannabis can stay in a persons body for up to 30 days. If you were to test me today after i had smoked no sooner than two weeks ago, you cant say theres a correlation between that consumption and my driving ability today. Reporter the california Highway Patrol said theyll be monitoring the bill closely. We will take the appropriate steps to do a full evaluation to determine whether or not that driver is driving under the impairment or influence of any type of drug. Tonight the National Park service is offering a 1,000 reward for information on a theft of a famous sign in yosemite. The hotel sign made in 1930 was first reported stolen in february. It came shortly before the Historic Hotel was controversially renamed the majestic yosemite motel. Park Officials Say the theft seems like more than a coincidence. A third man is under arrest suspected of stealing a scooter donated to the Makeawish Foundation made by hunter pence. 35yearold jacque mans was arrested yesterday afternoon. Two other suspects were arrested on monday. The three are accused of breaking into the foundations San Francisco offices saturday and taking the scooter, along with other items. The scooter was recovered when police served a search warrant. It will be returned to makeawish tomorrow at at t park before the giants home opener. San franciscos truancy rate is close to 27 . One organization in the bay area and the bay view district, i should say, is doing something to help students stay in school. They begin by knocking on the doors of merchants. Reporter these were once truant youth who hung out at home or along 3rd street in bayview. Lionel said he was having trouble staying in school. Just seemed like things outside of school, make it hard to focus on school. Instead of being in school, theyre out there. The next step is, you know, incarceration, you know, or some kind of trouble. Reporter former 49er marched with students in the annual ymca merchant walk to end truancy. Business owners were asked to help students by turning them away during school hours. They should be in school. They need to be in school. Reporter the students participating in the merchant walk dont attend a traditional public school. Instead they come here. Inside this ymca building are two schools that provide enough support to help them transition back. One of the schools is the center for academic reentry and empowerment, known as care. For students 14 to 17 years old. After a semester here, they go back to a traditional public school. We have over 385 graduates over an eightyear period that are now viable assets to the community and their families. Reporter the other school is a Charter School for the older ones. Smaller classes, teachers have more handson, and having a case manager. Reporter that case manager happens to be just across the hallway.
