But if liccardo is elected mayor. Keep in mind this is a referendum on current mayor chuck reed. That is a sign that the people agree with the current mayoral administration. Live in san jose, mark kelly, kpix5. Thanks mark. We are going to take a look at liccardos key enforcements. The San Jose Mercury news. Mayor chuck reed is one of his big backers. Former mayor susan hammer as well. And who was supporting dave cortese. The firefighters and the santa clara democratic county party. Police and firefighters have pulled no punch in the race. They really want cortese. Reporter thats right liz. We have also heard that a lot of police and firefighters plan to leave the city if mr. Liccardo is elected mayor. That is how high the stakes are in this election here tonight. And we have just had a little bit of excitement. Let me tell you what has been going on here. They have a computer here posting some numbers and it was just updated a few minutes ago showing 126 of 495 precincts now. According to the computer in this room, dave cortese is chipping away ever so slightly at the lead that sam liccardo had. Mr. Liccardo at 50. 85 with cortese inching up just a little bit. Mr. Cortese is. Now mr. Cortese came into the room at about 9 00 this evening and spoke to his supporters. He had a lot of people waiting for him here in the room. Mr. Cortese told people, though, this was going to be a close race. And a very long night waiting for the results. Together, we created a campaign that really the the city of san jose. It is not a campaign about electing someone mayor. It wasnt and hasnt been a campaign about a certain special interest in san jose. This campaign has been about putting together a movement that represents what san jose is, and the extraordinary possibility that it can be. Reporter now folks here at the cortese party are expecting a come from behind victory. They are hoping for a come from behind victory. They said in the early kpix5 poll last week, that showed that mr. Liccardo and mr. Cortese were virtually tied with the early voters but the people who would be turning in the ballots later indicated to the pollster they would favor mr. Cortese by seven points. If that polling holds up, then there will be a come from behind victory for mr. Cortese at this point. Still too close to say anything about the results. There has been some sort of a glitch at the registrar of voters. There is some sort of a Software Glitch that has been slowing down the results coming out here. So we have only had three updates in the past three hours. So something may be up. We will keep you posted on that. We will check in a little later. Len ramirez at the cortese campaign tonight. Phil, this is an interesting race because it is garnering national attention. Outgoing mayor chuck reed has really angered the Police Officers association. They have threatened to not back liccardo. And if liccardo is elected, they say they are going to leave. A lot of unions around the country were interested in this. There is money coming in. A couple of years back, with i had the big pension wave hit california and it crashed up against and created a lot of reforms because taxpayers couldnt flip the bill. As a result, we had a lot of cut backs and pensions. Since then, that sort of receded. They were thinking maybe we could renegotiate. This is not a mandate for either side. Nobody is walking in there with a big statement one way or the other. It is a very interesting race that is nation is watching saying what happens next with pension reform . It is a hot button issue. The city has lost 400 Police Officers who said we dont want to stay here if you wont pay us. Reporter thats right. The city says we cant pay that so we have to come up with a different compromise. That is the way it is going and the next place you might see it, in oakland and other cities as well. Very interesting. Thank you phil. Well in the south bay, district 17, mike honda is up against ro khanna. Both democrats. Mike honda is edging out his opponent with 54 . Ro khanna coming in with 46 of the vote. District 17 covers much of Santa Clara County as well as the southern part of Alameda County. It clowns the city of fremont, milpitas. We are with both candidates tonight. Linda yee is with the Honda Campaign and he just show maryland up. Reporter yeahings look who showed up behind me. It is mike honda. He has been mobbed by his supporters. We know the numbers are still too low, but he is encouraged. They are waiting to hear if he has won an eighth term. We may not know that until tomorrow sometime. He had words of encouragement for his supporters and he said it is still too early to celebrate. I feel good. I feel good because all our supporters are here. You dont see a party like this yet. This is good. This is good. But it is still early. Reporter this is going to be a close race because hondas opponent is another democrat who after the june primary had the 20point lead. But that has evaporated. This is a dead heat. Liz . Im curious, how the demographic changed in the district and how is it affecting the election . Reporter well after honda took office 12 years ago, he represented a sizable Asian American population. It has gotten even bigger. Here is how the demographics shake out. The majority of people in district 17 are now asian. That is more than 50 this is the only Asian American majority district in the United States. 27 are white, 18 are hispanic. Those are important numbers. That is why he has the support of even the national democrats. The democratic party. Because honda is able to deliver the Asian American vote in national elections. Thanks linda. Live at the Honda Campaign tonight. And you heard len ramirez a little earlier saying there were some potential problems with vote counting going on in Santa Clara County. We only have 6 of the precincts reporting in now. This was one of the most expensive congressional races in the country. Mr. Honda raised more than 3 million. Most of that from the unions. Ro khanna also raised more than 3 million. A good chunk of that from Tech Companies like google. He also wracked up endorsements from big names in Silicon Valley. Ann notarangelo is out covering the campaign. How much of a difference did the tech money make for ro khanna . Reporter he certainly had a big boost. He didnt have as much later on in the campaign though. You can see ro khanna is still here talking to his supporters. He has told them he believes they are on the verge of something remarkable but is not declaring victory yet. Ro khanna has a young inner jettic group of supporters willing to take on the establishment and what he has tried to do is frame himself as a pro business democrat. And he has gotten a lot of support from Silicon Valley as they try to unseat the seventh term incumbent. He tried to reach out to republicans and those without any Party Affiliation and he was criticized by the other camp as being too centerrist. He believes politicians want to Work Together for the people. Its a close race. We are very optimistic where we are. But it is going to go down to the wire. We started at 3 . You see the room here. We have a lot of people excited. They want to bring change to washington and i believe that will happen. Reporter so even though this is a democrat against democrat race. That has been one of the most expensive congressional races in the country and it has been one of the nastiest. But they dont believe they will have a winner declared until sometime tomorrow. Thank you ann. Two bay area cities are voting on whether to tax soda. San francisco cease prop e taxes sugary drinks by 2 cents per ounce. Measure d would add a penny per ounce. Berkeley could make history. 7 of precincts reporting. The yeses are ahead with 3 of the vote. In noes have 27 . Cate caugurian is live in berkeley tonight. Cate . Reporter well liz, right off the bat, i can give you updated numbers from that old screen. I know 25 precincts have reported and it is still a 73 in favor of measure d. As far as what is going on here, the race is too early to call. Berkeley could be the battleground or the final battleground over the war over sugary drinks. So far, the soda industry has been able to beat every similar tax opposed. But berkeley could be the biggest challenge right now. The yes campaign as you can hear behind me is receive bathing the early numbers. Change starts here. If this passes, berkeley would be the first city in the u. S. To do so. If the numbers stick, it will be a historic moment. Communities can come together for their kids health in spite of the outrageous amounts of money being spent against our interests. Reporter the no on d campaign claims the measure has too many loopholes and would raise grocery and restaurant prices. Now in order for this measure to pass here in berkeley, it would need a simple majority. Liz, back to you. Big bucks and trying to defeat the measure. Reporter that is right. Following the money, i can tell you the American Beverage Association sent 2. 2 million fighting measure d and supporters spent half a million. They say the penny per ounce tax would lead to fewer cases of obesity and diabetes. Soda is a 76 billion industry. Liz, back to you. Thanks cate. Here is a look at the numbers for San Francisco proposition e. It was 97 reporting, looks like the yeses are edging out the noes with 45 . But it needs a twothirds majority to pass. Move on. Governor jerry brown made history tonight. He easily won an unprecedented fourth term as california governor. In the end, it wasnt even close. Lets take a look now. Jerry brown with 41 is leading his challenger, Neel Kashkari, 58 to 42 . Well peter doubt is out the Governors Mansion with an update on the race. Peter . Reporter hey ken and liz. Jerry brown has made history becoming the fourth term governor. The first to get a fourth term in california history. He said he is very enthusiastic and looking forward to the forth term. The governor was so confident about getting the term, he did very little campaigning and spent more time on props 1 and 2 than his own campaign. He maintained a pretty significant lead over republican Neel Kashkari who he all but ignored. He did not start a single radio or tv spot on his own behalf. Here is what he said about the propositions he did campaign for. I spent the last several months saying save waterings save money. Those two are pillars because water is life. It is the basis of the well being and also our economy. Proposition is one is going to help us make key investments to strengthen water reliability. Reporter propositions 1 and 2 are the water bond and rainy day measures that could cement his legacy after he leaves office. At 76 years old, Governor Brown is currently the oldest serving governor in the nation and when he leaves office, he will be 80. Reporting live in sacramento, peter doubt, kpix5. Thanks for the update. When you cruise to a big win like jerry brown is, it is okay to break script in the speech. Maybe the most heartening thing ill would have to say besides being here in my wife in her new red dress she just got for this event, is the fact that one in two did pass. And one and two passed which republicans and democrats. And i will say living with him, he does wake up every single morning so enthused and energized by the job and he gives it his all. And there is no one smarter and more ethical in my mind and who has been thinking about california as long as he has and as long as his family has. Reporter Governor Brown pretty confident. There was no doubt in his mind. I thought he was going to bring the dog up. Yeah. But it is a Family Affair with Governor Brown. Ann gust his wife has been his key adviser since he was the mayor of oakland. Right there at the attorney generals office. Basically, his chief of staff an the campaign guru. We are talking a slimmed down operation here that spent, if you look at inflation, he spent less this time than he did when he got reelected this last time he got reelected. He has been around the block. Jerry brown is a phenomenon. He is a party unto himself. And he has led a democratic ticket that is sweeping the state. It is pretty amazing. Interesting that we brought this up before instead of putting his money toward the commercials promoting him. Look at what he really did. He made the came pain about water and saving money. His opponents couldnt attack him about that. He didnt talk about high speed rail or the state of schools or prison overcrowding and he didnt talk about pensions. He talked about what he wanted to talk about and he did it without even saying vote for me. You dont think politics is keeping it simple . That is how you win. It took browns challenger Neel Kashkari only about 26 minutes to concede after the polls closed. And i am really proud of the small part that we played in helping them achieve those goals and we will continue to help them. This was always about blazing a trail for the future of california, and for the future of the republican party. And more than anything, i am proud of all of you and how we Work Together to bring these issues forward. Kashkari raised more than 5 million in this race. 2million of that was his own money. That Campaign Cash paided for ads like this one this made a splash for all the wrong reasons. The kashkari campaign used a drowning kid. Remember this one . In the Swimming Pool to try to go after jerry brown on education. Most critics agreed it was the ad that sunk. Lets check back in with allen martin with new numbers on the state propositions. Allen . Reporter as we mentioned earlier, props 1 and 2 sailing to victory. Jerry brown gave 30 million to those efforts. Prop 37 is passing as well reducing prison time for someone who has been convicted of nonviolent drug crimes. Passing with 57 of the vote. Prop 45 would have given the state Veto Authority or extreme peopleup increases. Well voters opinions changed drastically. 45 being defeated with 60 of the vote. 3. 2million spent for it from the california nurses association. The Health Insurance industry fought this with 57 million going to the no campaign. Groups such as well point, kaiser, blue shield, and it paid off. And prop 46 also failing tonight. It would have authorized random drug and Alcohol Testing of doctors. It set up a Prescription Drug data base. Plenty of people found something to object to. It has been defeated tonight. More than 12 million has been in favor of prop 46. Most coming from the families of victims of preventable medical errors. 63million spent opposing it like the American Nurses association and others. Prop 48 which would allow casinos to be built in the central valley. Voters felt that unnecessary. It has lost today. A message from voter. They want to spend money to save water. They want a Rainy Day Fund as well. And allen, prop 1 is also money for earthquake Early Warning system . The money is not included but there may be a way to do it. It was one of the things approved by state legislature la sweer. But there was no money to pay for it. Not a dime. So of the 7 billion that prop 1 is authorizing, the state senator who offered the quake warning bill says it only makes sense. Use some of that money to the Warning System. Estimates are it will cost 80 million. The thought is a quake Warning System would give state agencies time to protect their warter sources before a major earthquake hits. Whether the legislature chooses to direct 80 million, that is another question. But there is one thing certain, the way the law was written, funding for the earthquake Warning System is not come from the state general fend. All right allen. Thank you. One of the hotly contested races. Oakland voters electing a new mayor. 15 people want to be mayor. The top three vote getters on your screen right now. Lets take a look. Libby schaaf with about 17 voting in. Jean quan is second at 17 of the vote. Joe tuman trailing. This is ranked Choice Voting so you vote for your top three candidates and there is a big matrix that has to go together there to try to put this all together to see who wins. We will have the results. We have Team Coverage on this race. First, want to get back to joe vasquez where libby schaaf is taking lead. Joe . Reporter ken, i got to tell you, libby schaaf is talking to a crowd right now of supporters an one of her supporters just got up on the podium and announced with 44 of the vote in, that she maintained her lead with 28 of the vote. I got to tell you, that is the exact same percentage she had at 17 , and again at 25 . So what we are seeing are some numbers that we are just not sure whether those could be completely trusted at this point. Because she is getting the exact same percentage each time these votes are updated. More on that in a moment. First, i want to tell you, it is a jubilant night for this candidate. She has been a council since 2010. She is 48 years old, a native oaklander. She is the voice of reason on an often tumultuous council. She brokered a heated disagreement over evictions but she says the key issue for her as it is for many oaklanders is crime. What will we see . More cops . It is not just that you will see more cops, but you will see better policing. And you will see a lot after attention to addressing the root causes of crime. Jobs. Better wages, and much better educational outcomes for our children. That is all part of my holistic approach to public education. Reporter she has endorsements from jerry brown. As well as u. S. Senator barbara boxer. You may remember her Campaign Slogan is that it is hella time for leadership in oakland. Well it is not hella time to celebrate here quite yet, but she is telling the crowd to hang in there. It could be a long night. We will be adding up the votes. Once again you guys, we just received an update saying according to the Alameda County count, 48 of the votes are in showing her at 28 of the vote. That is what she had when there was 17 and 25 . There could be some discrepancy in the numbers. We will check on that. Stay tuned. Im joe vasquez, kpix5. Thanks joe. Well, the mood quite different at the jean quan campaign tonight. That is where Christin Ayers is standing by. Christin . Reporter thats right. A bit of a subdued mood here at jean quans Election Party headquarters. The party is wrapping up here. We have the mayor here live. And mayor, we are hearing the numbers, hearing you are behind by a few digits but this is still early on in the race. What is your mood now . It hasnt changed very much. We will see where the precincts are. When they are all in. We will run the long road and see where we are. It is way too early. As i said earlier tonight. That is still how i feel. Reporter we are hearing jubilation over at libby schaafs campaign. Is it too early to celebrate or is it a good indication early on of where the votes are going . We know rank Choice Voting is always a wild card. First of all, we think these are early absentee voters. Four years ago, when i was 9 behind don prada, and as the final votes were opened, later that week, it was a gap that came much closer. So we will see what happens then. Then you see where we are. Reporter you mentioned earlier that, you know, just sort of thinking about as you are going forward, whether or not any message got lost here. Are you thinking right now about what could have or would have been . No im not. Im way too tired. We worked really hard. We feel the votes are trending toward us. That is more people should have gotten the message of what i had done. And particularly, that today, i have been rocking the boat in neighborhoods that dont usually vote. And i think that helped my campaign. Really help get the city measures passed because we have more people off the vote. So thank you. Reporter last question, are you still confident of the possibility of a win tonight . I have never been confident. I have always said it is a close vote. So i still think it is a close vote. Reporter you heard it from the mayor herself tonight. A tight race here. She believes as more of the votes come in. Too early to tell what will happen tonight. We will keep an eye on those numbers. Back to you guys. Stay with it Christin Ayers. Thank you for that. We have updated numbers from oakland. Rebecca caplin tied with joe tuman. Juliette goodrich is live at Rebecca Kaplans headquarters. Reporter we didnt know where we would be in terms of the front runner. Early polls were saying that Rebecca Kaplan had a slight lead. She is in third place now with early returns and a lot of people say it is not over until it is over. What we are dealing with here in the city of oakland is ranked Choice Voting. That means voters voted for their first, second, and third candidates. So no one is declaring an unofficial mayor tonight. It may not happen until wednesday or thursday at best. So right now, a lot of optimism here at headquarters. Phil, break down this oakland race for us. We have 15 candidates. Ranked Choice Voting. It is complicated. Reporter it is. Sand we have seen a shift in the turnout. Jerry browns endorsement of libby schaaf really took her from the middle of the pack and put her up in the lead. Rebecca kaplan has fallen back. Who do you think libby schaafs Campaign Manager is . Ace smith, the same manager for governor jerry brown. Meanwhile, Rebecca Kaplan fell back. And we have joe tuman and jean quan sharing spots in the top four. If they break their second hard third choices, who would they go to and you split them up, it looks like libby schaaf has the edge. If the tuman votes go to her. She could take over kaplan or quan. Nothing is a done deal though. As you heard major quan say, she was nine points behind it this time at the last election and ended up winning the thing. Reporter the difference here is that prada had a lot of negatives going in. Libby schaaf has managed to be a lot of Different Things to a lot of different people. The key is to have a lot of twos and threes. Reporter the key is to be the most likable person. Thanks phil. Well lets go to measure z. Looks like it is going to past pass. The measure extends a 100 a year parcel tax and an 8 surcharge on parking rates. The funding goes towards police and fire as well as violence prevention programs. All right, lets take a look at the National Picture tonight. Big news out of washington. We have been talking about it. Republicans now controlling both houses of congress. The republicans have taken back the senate after eight years. Allen martin watching all of this for us. Allen . Reporter republicans easily held onto the house of course. But they also seized the senate, the first time in eight years with a couple of contests undecided. The gop holds 52 seats. More than enough to oust the democrats from power in the final two years of the president s final term. Republicans won at least seven new seats tonight. Wrestling three away from democratic incumbents. The other four were open races previously held by retiring democrats. Now louisiana is one of the still undecided states headed for a runoff as incumbent mary landro tries to secure a fourth term. Mitch mcconnell has plenty of job security tonight. He is poised to become the new Senate Majority leader. Tonight, they said we could have real change in washington. Real change. Reporter republican tom cotton in arkansas is on the right of your screen, joins the majority as arkansas new senator at just 37. He is also the youngest senator in america after being elected to Congress Just last year. But the new senator is still facing an uphill batter. Nearly eight in ten voters disapprove of the job congress is doing. And republicans wont have enough votes to break the gridlock of a filibuster. Liz . Thank you. Two losses in two states in two years. Tonight, republican scott brown lost to New Hampshire senator jean shaheen. He is a former massachusetts senator. Warren defeated him back in 2012. If he had won this time around, brown would have been the third senator in u. S. History to represent two different states. The latest now from san jose. Still neck in neck in the race for mayor. Lets take a look at sam liccardo on the right, dave cortese on the left. This is one of the most important mayoral elections in rescent san jose history. The city is at a cross roads. Here are the latest results with about 25 of the vote. Sam liccardo with a slight edge. He is leading his opponent 51 over 49 . Lets check in again with mark kelly. He has been with the liccardo campaign all night. How is it looking there . Reporter they just made the announcement about ten minutes ago. About the latest numbers. And of course, this place went wild again. Looks like people dont want to leave. They want to keep celebrating though sam liccardo already gave what very much sounded like a thank you speech. He went onto say this is not over. They will be counting votes well into the morning. We probably wont know until tomorrow morning who the actually winner is. But he gave what sounded like an acceptance speech. Throughout the race, liccardo has made himself the underdog. That was the theme in tonights speech as well. Liccardo said when he was down 20 points at the start of this race many months ago, that the people in this room, volunteers, friends, family, all believed in him. He used the speech as a chance to thank them. This campaign he says has worked. Volunteers made 40,000 phone calls. 35,000 doorsteps. Incredible how liccardo born and raised here said it wasnt until this cool pain that he truly understood what san jose stands for. Here is what he said to his supporters tonight. I know we cant say what exactly is going to happen yet. We have a little while to go as they count the votes. That will take some time before we know. We need to take a moment to honor the journey we have all taken because we have all come a very long way. Reporter so once again, though that sounded like a thank you speech, there is a lot of celebration still going on. So probably tomorrow morning. Keep in mind if liccardo does win, that is a strong sign from voters that they support all the pension reform measures that the Current Administration mayor chuck reed put into place. Live in san jose, mark kelly, kpix5. Liz, back to you. Thanks mark. Len ramirez is with the cortese campaign in san jose. Now there are only a couple of thousand votes separating the candidates. This is very close. Reporter only about 1500 votes celebrate the two candidates so the word here the night is that this race is far from over. Let me give you a picture of what is happening now. People are crowded around a laptop computer. People have been standing like this the last couple of hours waiting for results to come through from the registrar of voters office. We have had word of some problems that were delaying results coming out. Hopefully, they are getting things fixed. We have 224 out of 445 precincts reporting. It is liccardo 51 to cortese 49 . So this race is very close. We spoke to candidate cortese just a few minutes ago. He hasnt lost hope at all. Well, it is good movement. They just added 4,000 more votes and we shot up by 200. If that keeps happening t rest of the count, we will win the election. We have had a lot of confidence that we were winning the grass roots. Reporter still a very enthusiastic crowd here at the cortese party tonight. They are waiting for more results to come in. We do have a history in this city, very close mayoral elections. One several years ago was very close and we didnt have if results for about a week. It could be shaping up to a similar scene here tonight. All right, len ramirez reporting live from san jose. Thanks for that update. There are a lot of other mayor races going on around the bay area. Lets look at richmond. Right now, these are the numbers as we are getting them. With 49 reporting in. Tom butt is leading by a thousand votes with 50 of the vote over nat bates and uche uwahimo at 13 . And here are the latest on the Richmond City council races. Gayle mclaughlin is winning. Jovanka bocklse and edwardo martinez. The most expensive race in the state is two candidates. Two democrats running for state school superintendent. Incumbent tom torlickson is up against marshall tuck. Here will the latest numbers with 52 of precincts reporting. Tom torlakson coming in at 53 of the vote followed by marshall tuck at 47 . Why so much money for this particular race . Democrat versus democrat. A down ballot race. Superintendent of public construction. What is that about . It is a tone setter. Tom, a long time state assemblyman. We see on your screen there. The incumbent is backed by the California Teachers Association. Marshall tuck on the right side of the screen is a newcomer. He is a Charter School advocate from los angeles. This became a referendum on the political power of the California Teachers Association which is one of the Biggest Forces in california politics. The result . About 30 million between the reformists and the teachers union. Yes. An interesting race. And one that a lot of democrats are watching because if it goes one way, they will go that way. If it goes the other, they will stay the way it is. Interest. Interesting. Since we are talking about schools, lets check out a few ballot measures in solano county. Vacaville school bonds looking like they will move forward. Yeses seem to have it with 61 . Noes with 39 . In vallejo, there need to be a twothirds vote in order for measure e to pass. This is for the Vallejo School bonds. 28 of precincts reporting. The yeses seem to have it with 59 of the note vol lowed by knows at 41 . A few california counties are debating whether to ban fracking. Not much fracking in california yet, but it is get tag way. Allen, i know you have been watching. This is really interesting because this is controlling land. Basically. Reporter it is all because of the monterrey shale. A lot of people were criticizing these ballot measures saying it is kind of like voting to ban ice fishing in mexico because while there is no fracking going on, never theless, chevron, exxon mobile put 7 million into the campaign to defeat the ballot measures. If fracking was used, it could produce billions of barrels of oil. Environmentalists say frac sergeant a disaster. It jokes water and chemicals under ground and high pressure. Contaminates ground water. It causes earthquakes. The latest results show the ban in san benifo county shows it is standing. The Oil Companies will want to frac to get the oil. It is going on all over. It is crazy out there. And so california, a couple of counties acting out on trying to stop it here. All right allen, thank you very much for that. We will be right back. But first, heres a look at some of the other races around the bay area. First impressions are important. Youve got to make every second count. Banking designed for the way you live your life. So you can welcome your family home. For the first time. Chase. So you can. siren wails pop music playing when youre ready ready, ready, ready come and get it get it, get it when youre ready, come and get it na na na na na na na na na na na when youre ready, come and get it na na na na. Female announcer its a great big world and it can all be yours. Here and only here. Come and get it. Still has a commanding lead shes about 12 points aheaf ma taking a look at the latest oakland mayoral numbers. Libby schaaf is still ahead of jean quan. Joe vasquez has the latest. Joe . Reporter ken, we are talking a 28 of the vote. Libby schaaf, city councilwoman of oakland. Thanks for joining us. You just gave a speech to your supporters. You are not declaring victory quite yet. Again, we are focusing on celebrating a great campaign. That is what we are focused on and we are all committed to making oakland great. We are committed to ensuring it has a fantastic future. Numbers look great and we are celebrating that. Reporter all right, with 28 of the vote well ahead of major jean quan and a lot to go. Only only did they goat the first police votes. Stray to go through the ranged Choice Voting. Lets go to allen now. Joe, i think we know that jean quan landed in the mayors seat thanks to rank Choice Voting. She and Rebecca Kaplan wanted to vote out dan prada. People still think they can gain the system in certain ways and people still are pretty confused about how votes actually get calculated after election day. Reporter for starters, you should know rank Choice Voting doesnt matter if one candidate gets more than half of the first place votes, but dont bet on that in oakland. So here is what will happen. The candidate who gets the fewest first place votes is eliminated, then the second base votes are contributed. Then the process is repeated. Candidates with fewer fist place votes are knocked out and their second choices get shuffled over to who is left standing. Eventually, even if it takes adding up the third place votes, someone gets pushed up over 50 . While it is often called instant run off, there is nothing instant about it. The first thing you should know is dont expect to know winner tonight. It could take several days as we saw in the San Francisco mayors race. Reporter no telling how long it is going to take to get all of those votes counted. Ken . Liz . Thank you very much allen lets talk about Oakland City Council race. District 2. There are the numbers. 22 of the precincts reporting in. Dana has 38 of the vote. Abel, her challenge, 35 . Dana is back on the air. But in a very limited role tonight. All right, candidate king. You have an accomplished record as a topnotch journalist and a pretty good artist. Why do you want to get in to politics . That is what i have been asked by people. So you tell me. Well its a good question. But i dont call it politics. I call it service. It is an extension of the volunteer work i have done 30 years of my life. I love this city. And i live in an amazing neighborhood that is like the u. N. I want my neighbors to stay here. I want people who want to come here to be welcomed here. I want the city to grow sand thrive and i believe that i have the skills that can help lift the city up. And if i am i lekked, it is not me going to city hall, ken. It is a we going to city hall. Im excited im energized tell me about district 2. You say it is like the United Nations there. What does the city need to do in district 2 .
