New at 5 00 a twoalarm fire sent up a plume of black smoke over one Mountain View neighborhood. Firefighters say it began in the garage of a house on wortham court. It quickly spread to the interior and to the house next door. You can see flames shooting from the roof. A person inside one of the houses got out safely. The fire is now out but the cause is still unclear. Manhunt under way in Mendocino County for at least one man involved in the shooting of a sheriffs deputies. The chase started at noon north of fort bragg. Investigators say at least one suspect shot that deputy and ran away. Authorities urge everyone to stay away from the area especially near highway 1. The man police say stabbed and killed a 16yearold boy in campbell is free. 24yearold todd tharp was released from jail last night. Police say that he fatally stabbed ivan diaz but the Santa Clara County d. A. s office decided not to file charges after evidence backed tharps claim of selfdefense. Apparently a fight broke out sunday night at a park at campbell. Tharp says he was attacked by diaz and at least two other people. After tharp was knocked to the ground, he took out a knife and swung at his attackers. Diaz was stabbed, died monday from his injuries. The fbi has dealt a crushing blow to a violent san jose street gang. It started with this huge bust back in january. Thats when about two dozen suspected members were arrested accused of dealing meth. The fbi picked up two more Significant Players this morning. Now, most of the suspects face drug and weapons charges. New details on a plan to put a Probation Center right between two oakland schools. Alameda county officials decided its not such a good idea. About 1400 probationers klug sex offenders would be required to check in at 1111 jackson street every month near Lincoln Elementary and American Indian charter school. Parents said no. Its totally implausible that the government administrative process that took place to allow this business to come this far and this close to fruition didnt look at the impact on the community. But today they got to come here to the secret garden as part of a District Program called education outside. Were talking about water use during the gold rush which the students have been learning about in the classroom. How did people get water during the gold rush . Reporter using the drought as a teachable moment, instructor brook mcclelland explains to these fifth graders how different california was in the mid 1800s. Water to homes had to be carried in and people used only about a gallon a day instead of the average 100 gallons we use today. With that, they were off to the schoolyard where the kids had to perform common tasks like cleaning dishes and washing clothes, hands and faces with only a gallon of water. Most found they didnt need that. Im surprised. I didnt know cleaning these dishes would take such little water, probably not even a quarter. Reporter the students discussed strategies for using as little as possible and being 10yearolds you knew that some couldnt resist the urge to be knuckleheads but they got the message.
