Amount of radiation naturally all around us. Homeland security wants to know if something bad happens, a nuclear attack, meltdown, dirty bomb. Where the radiation is already and where it might be new. That interview, by the way, was done three years ago by kpix 5. The last time Homeland Security measured. But no one today would go on the record. It flies very low. 300 feet. Thats 30 stories. Theres a lot of 30 story buildings in San Francisco. Weve gone up to the 30th floor on one of the buildings with a Remote Control helicopter to show you what it might look like. You may see it flying around San Francisco, berkeley, and pacifica through friday. Were not the only area where this helicopter will be. Its been going up and down the coast for the last couple of weeks. Mike sugerman, kpix 5. The helicopter, not mikes helicopter, but the big helicopter is supposed to fly over berkeley tomorrow the family of kate steinle filed a wrongful death claim against sheriff ross mirkarimi, immigrations and customs enforcement, and against the bureau of land managements. Steinle was shot and killed in july while walking on pier 14 with her father and a friend. The man charged was an undocumented immigrant who had been deported several times in the past. Juan Francisco Lopez sanchez allegedly shot her with a gun stolen from a blm agent. He had just been released from San Francisco jail in april in spite of an immigration request to hold him. Who in their right mind would let a sevenyear felon, undocumented violent felon loose on the streets where you people are standing . This is for the future. Ours is gone from us. But we want it better for the good of all. Were here to make sure that a change is made so nobody has to endure pain, my mom and dad and i go through on a daily basis. Because the system failed our sister. The filing of the wrongful death claim is typically a precursor to a full blown lawsuit. No comments specifically regarding the claims from the sheriff. He is expressing his sympathy. Blm says it continues to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. Theres a plan afloat to make gun purchases a little tougher in San Francisco by videotaping all transactions. New at 6 00, kpix 5 joe vazquez live with why one man is having none of it. There are others across the bay area but this little shop here on Mission Street is the very last one in the city limits of San Francisco selling guns and its days may be numbered. I dont see how in any way, shape, or form this will curb violence in our streets at all. Reporter the last gunshot has become a Tourist Destination of sorts. But for how long . It could soon be going out of business. Should this pass . Will probably close. Reporter hes referring to proposed legislation that could impose even more restrictions on his store. The ordinance about to be formally introduced by supervisor mike farrell would require all transactions between customers to be recorded on video and handed over to police. He points out his store already has 17 surveillance cameras and he says hes already required to hand over any video the police request. But this takes it a step further. What we dont view is voluntary give private information to the Police Department voluntarily. We just dont do that. He believes if the new law passes it will have a Chilling Effect on his business. It seems theyre trying to take the guns away from the people. The goal is not to run anybody out of business but from my perspective the Public Safety of San Francisco residents comes first. Reporter the City Attorney is still reviewing the proposed but expects to introduce it sometime this month. Its not something i am particularly concerned about. Im first and foremost concerned about the safety of our residents. The element were concerned with, they dont shop here. They dont. Youre going to get Video Surveillance of people coming in here legally buying stuff with their identification, criminals not doing that. San francisco has tried in the past with other gun control measures that have been shot down by the court, but in this case its not clear what will happen because it would have to be challenged and the general manager tells me the owner is not inclined to challenge this in court. Instead hes thinking of shutting it down. Joe vazquez, kpix 5. Shocking video of a bay area construction accident has a major cranther under fire contractor under fire tonight. Reporter the worker did survive with only minor injuries but Santa Clara CountyOfficials Say it shows faulty practices by Turner Construction, the general contractor that designed and built the system. Certainly a concern theyre not paying attention to the details. Reporter the incident happened almost one year ago but the county claims the video was turned in by one of the crew just yesterday amid the countys threat to fire Turner Construction. The county says the steam system has yet to be redesigned and built. Were prepared to lock them out of the project. Reporter Turner Construction said safety is its number 1 priority but the Company Refused to comment on the explosion, saying its already given the county a full report. In comments yesterday a spokesman accused the county from trying to divert attention away. The real objective of today ought to be how do we find a path forward . How do we stop pointing a finger or blame at turner and its subcontractors . Turner construction has less than one week to respond to the outline how it will get this back on track. Turner could be out of this job. Reporting live in san jose, len ramirez, kpix 5. Another construction accident that shut down highway 101 for 24 hours is now being investigated by osha. Federal water officials cutting back the flow from folsom lake near sacramento. Its now at just 20 of its capacity. Reporter lemor abrams with the plan to keep communities from drying up. Reporter folsom lake has long stood as one of the devastating symbols of the drought. It will be a noticeable difference. Reporter lily allen is a hydrogeologist charged with monitoring water supply for surrounding driblths. Shes watching rates drop to historic lows. 120,000 acre feet is when everyone starts to get very, very nervous and 90,000 acre feet is where we hit something called dead pool in the industry. Reporter a dead pool is what allen describes is a condition when water levels fall below the large intake pipes that send water to half a million households. The reservoir will continue to drop. Reporter shane is with the bureau of reclamation which controls water flows. Is there a chance the folsom lake could drop below that crucial water valve point . There is a chance that that could happen. It would be later in the fall or in to the winter. It all depends on precipitation. Reporter the bureau is working on this temporary barge facility that would pump water back up to the valve and keep water flowing. If the worst Case Scenario should become reality if theyre not ready for use, what happens to the people who rely on the water well have the barge up and running before it needs to be used. The bureau is hoping it wont have to use the barge, but if need be, water officials are not ruling out building even more barges next year. Which leads us to the inevitable. People are getting sick of it. We keep talking about el nino, keep talking about the fact that its probably hopefully going to bring us more rain. This is the make or break year. We cant do this for much longer. This is the line in the sand Mother Nature has to give in. El nino we hope will help. Nothing is a guarantee. But we are hopeful for a wet winter this winter. Lets take a peek outside. First day of september. San jose, 82 degrees for you. A very comfortable 75 in san mateo today. Union city, 75. Warm spot was antioch at 87. Cool spot, pacifica, 65 degrees. You can see the low cloud cover and fog moving through the golden gate. Whole different ball game next couple days. It will not be wet but it will be cooler with everybody staying in the 60s or 70s. Now we finally can see the light at the end of the tunnel at least when it looks to average rainfall. For september, not that much. More than the summertime. About a quarter of inch of rainfall on average. October we typically see more than an inch of rainfall and november we triple that. Our average rainfall in San Francisco was more than 3 inches. Let us hope and pray we get even more than that over the next three months as we begin to see the end of the dry season. Dry season is over in western washington. This area of low pressure will be cooler for us as that low makes its closest pass to the bay area beginning tomorrow and lasting three days. I think a lot of Companies Make the discussion of pay a very taboo topic and the lack of information about it often leaves people assuming what other people are getting paid. Reporter according to the u. S. Census, women in california make 84 cents per every dollar earned by their male counterparts. The new law would require companies to pay men and women the same amount. There was an old expression called trust but verify. We should trust employers that they probably want to do the right thing but verify it by recodifying it in law is probably a good idea. Reporter the new law wont transform the workplace overnight. It still requires individual employees question and challenge pay inequality themselves but most believe it is a step in the right direction. Its not perfect.
