It was rejected by his council colleagues. The mayor now finds himself in the bulls eye of a recall effort that will be on the ballot next fall. Residents play him for helping create the proble he wants to solve. Those of us who supported the mayor when he was elected in 2014 are feeling very disappointed. We really feel that our city council has not stood up for the people. Reporter but it may be too little too late. Workers are nearing completion on the massive apple spaceship campus, which the Council Approved with little opposition, which will concentrate 12,000 employees in one spot. Living in this community with them at the doorstep has decreased my quality of life. Reporter sharon, who did not give her last name, says she has lived in cupertino for 29 years. She says walking and riding around her neighborhood with apples silver buses whizzing around is now dangerous. She said it changed her mind from once being proud to have apple as a neighbor. Reporter thats right, liz. Lightning actually hit two locations here in oakley at a middle school and at this house here. The family who lives here that lived here says a burst of lightning actually hit the flagpole first that was placed in front of the house. That energy then traveled throughout the house knocking out power and causing damage to the structure. It started with a loud boom. I mean, it was powerful. It was like a propane tank blowing up. Reporter a burst of lightning blew up the wooden base of the flagpole. It shook the house so hard the ceiling fan fell. James douglas saying the electricity blew out after chunk of stucco touching this metal fence. The sheet metal around the house was also damaged. James douglas sister was shocked working outside at the time. She went to the hospital with minor injuries. Yeah, its really a scary moment. Reporter just a few blocks away, firefighters believe lightning struck Ohara Park Middle School triggering the fire alarm and causing the p. A. System to malfunction. We were using all the staff to go room to room checking staff and children. Reporter the school was forced to evacuate the students. It was really scary because, like, the class was moving. I thought it was an earthquake but it was thunder. Reporter no one was hurt at the school but some students asked their parents to take them home. The families of mario woods, alma carlo pescarolo perez and alex nieto are meeting with the department of justice. They are hoping for an independent investigation of the Deadly Police involved shootings. This comes after a series of protests recently. As activists put pressure on the Police Department to hold its officers more accountable, a group called the justice for Mario Woods Coalition issued a set of demands which include ousting police chief greg suhr and charging all officers involved in the recent deadly shootings with murder. Earlier today, San Francisco mayor ed lee reached out to a group of hunger strikers dubbed the frisco five. But the two sides didnt get very far. Twentyfive yearold kyle ly gave in to full services is back for vta light rail after a very long and rather strange standoff today. Just after 1 00 p. M. , 25year old kyle lewis finally gave in to negotiators and came down from the roof of a light rail train. He had been there for 12 hours. It started about 1 30 a. M. When lewis flagged down a train, climbed on top of it, and then used the high voltage lines that power the train like a trapeze. To get him down, the Sheriffs Department brought in a deputy who apparently had a history with lewis. One of our transit deputies actually arrested kyle about a month ago, recognized him, had a great rapport. Well, that rapport paid off. Not long after the handshake, the deputy was able to get lewis off the train and bring the standoff to a peaceful resolution. The victim of a car break in in San Francisco helped Police Arrest three suspects. This were arrested last thursday. Police say they broke in a womans car in the sunset back in march and took off with her camera. When she found her camera in an online post, she contacted police. They tracked down the seller to a home in oakland. Thats where they found more than 80 stolen items including rifles, jeans, a tiffany dish and power tools. Police are working to identify the owners of those stolen goods. Other bay area headlines chopper 5 was overhead as crews worked to right a meals on wheels truck this morning. Police tell us that a man and woman carjacked that truck from downtown fremont. They led police on a chase through union city in hayward then flipped the truck on an on ramp to 580 in castro valley. Both were arrested. The Charity Workers had off loaded the meals before the thieves stole the wheels. Flames overnight and a child recovering from minor burns. Three adults and four kids were inside the home on karl avenue when the fire started. Everyone apparently made it out okay. Investigators say the home is too damaged to live in right now. No word yet on the cause of that fire. [ elizabeth coughing ] in palo alto, police have arrested this woman for arson. On sunday, witnesses saw her trying to set an empty rv on fire. But we discovered it hasnt always played by the rules and owes a fortune in fines. But will the city hasnt cracked down. Only but the city hasnt cracked down. The largest private art school in the country is one of the largest Property Owners in the city occupying 40 buildings, many of them historic. The problem . It never got permits to convert many of them into the classrooms and dorms they are now being used as. Fines have been filing up for 10 years and they are potentially in the millions of dollars. But so far, the universitys owner and operator dr. Stevens hasnt paid a dime. How have they been able to do it for so long . It is truly unfortunate that instead of enforcing the law in an evenhanded way, that is there have been city agencies that let them get away with murder. Reporter the City Attorney is talking about the Planning Department. This is where regular people like you or i come to get a permit to remodel our home or business. But dr. Stevens often skips that step. Perhaps we have a bit more patience than the City Attorney may in this matter. Reporter the Planning Department, who first uncovered the irregularities, admits that hes allowed the academy some breaks. Most recently so he can finish an Environmental Impact report thats already five years behind schedule. The goal is to get them through the enforcement process and because of the environmental review, it is complicated. Reporter meanwhile, stevens, an influential bay area philanthropist and friend of mayor ed lee, has continued her buying spree. In fact, doubling academys Real Estate Holdings in just 10 years. Its no secret that its one of the biggest employer in San Francisco. Has anybody approached you and said lay off them . Absolutely not. Reporter sanchez says this year no more mr. Nice guy. He just sent out 22 new notices of violation with a deadline comply by july 1 or face fines of 250 per building per day. But already, stevens is paying. That could delay the fines again. She turned down request for an interview referring us instead to her 7th attorney on the case. Our plan is to wrap all this up in a resolution thats satisfactory to the Planning Commission. Reporter Jim Brosnahan says a rests losing is in the works although he a resolution is in the works although he wont go into detail. Its fluid at the present time. Reporter the main Sticking PointNine Properties violate a new City Ordinance that limits conversion to residential units. The law would have to change to make the units legal. Some other schools in the city had the same problem, but their buildings were grandfathered in. They were all grandfathered but the academy was not we want to be treated the same as everybody else. Reporter but back at city hall, you get the sense thats not going to happen anytime soon. Here you have a politically, uhm, powerful entity, one that has vast economic and political resources at its disposal that is treated differently than the average homeowner or business owner. The academy turned in a key document to the Planning Department that it hopes will prove its acting in good faith to resolve issues. The universitys Attorney Says the longawaited Environmental Impact report will also be completed in time for this months Planning Commission meeting. Its overwhelming because everybody happened so fast but im glad i got to share it. We are proud and supported each other the whole time pushed ourselves it apply and achieve it. Once high school ends they will go their separate ways. One is going to uc irvine for nursing the other to stanford to major in environmental engineering. Wow. Pretty incredible. Smart. Yup.
