A scandal more serious over the beating of a car theft suspect by Alameda County sheriffs deputies stemming from last falls incidents in San Francisco. Now it includes stealing from a suspect bribing witnesses and a coverup. Anne makovec has more on a case that led to three deputies being removed from active duty. Reporter the story keeps getting worse new accusation of deputies taking a photo of the man they beat as he lay on the street bleeding and we found out that a sheriffs investigator rejected the deputies first reports of that incident because they didnt match what was on surveillance video. Heres some of that video taken last november showing two Alameda County deputies hitting a man with batons after he led them on a highspeed chase from Castro Valley to San Francisco. Now that suspect accuses them of taking a, quote, trophy photo after they beat him. Another deputy now accused of bribing two homeless witnesses by giving them that, the suspects golden necklace to keep quiet. You take evidentiary photos and in that photo was a picture of a gold chain. That gold chain did not make it into evidence, which is one of the main reasons why that person is on leave now. Reporter that person he is referring to the third deputy now caught up in the scandal 15 year veteran sean osborne. All three are on paid leave as the investigation continues. No charges have been filed. In the meantime, the sheriff is announcing new rules including use of force training protocols, bodyworn cameras that must be on and a restructuring of the patrol division. Yesterday, the Alameda County sheriff Gregory Ahern called the beating disturbing and said that if there was a coverup that would be a total breach of ethics. Senator Dianne Feinstein says the fbi should not have to tell apple how it hacked into an iphone. The feds said last week they were able to get access to data on a phone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters. That access was the subject of a legal dispute until a third party came forward with hacking tips. Now feinstein says the february does not have an obligation to share that information. The senator, who has access to private intelligence briefings, says agents had a good reason to get into the phone but she cant disclose it. Electronic cigarette industry is pushing back against a bill that would treat its product like traditional tobacco. Reporter a lot of new details as the man who was beaten in this case filed a civil rotunda criminal investigation civil lawsuit, and a criminal investigation continues. Last november two Alameda County sheriffs deputies hit a man with batons after he led them on a highspeed chase from Castro Valley to San Francisco. Now that suspect is accusing them of taking a, quote, trophy photo of him after they beat him. A third deputy is accused of bribing two homeless witnesses with that. Investigators say they are searching for the suspect who shot and killed five animals at the berkeley marina. A groundskeeper found them including a feral cat along seawall drive on the weekend. They were shot with a pellet gun. Four died, a fifth was put down. Happening today, san jose residents will get a chance to speak their minds about a housing plan for the homeless. Next door they have a Recovery Center where folks get counseling and other services and or the other side of the lot is Affordable Care act. The lot itself is huge. Six acres and used to be used for rv and boat storage but now its got room for 170 people. The county plans to award the contract soon. But detailed plans have yet to be finalized. One idea that seems to be gaining momentum are these modular individual units that have locks. They will be 100 to 200 square feet with access to shared bathrooms and kitchens. The city may also allow couples and pets. Now, the site is close to Public Transportation including buses and light rail. The city wants to avoid this, remember the jungle that was cleaned up more than a year ago . More than 250 People Living in squall lar, deplorable conditions for a year in squalor after a crimeridden filthy site in downtown san jose.
