So what do you want to ask people here in the bay area to do . Were famous for it. Well, clearly we have to show everyone that in the bay area, we are a can do area. And so we ought to make the call to donate here. I think so many people have that same prayer tonight just that they can find loved ones, make contact, know that they are okay and the red cross is doing a lot of that work. I spoke to a red cross official earlier tonight who told me that 1,000 people are on the ground, red cross people, right now in the philippines working in each Little Village trying to get the word out trying to find out who is there, who is hurt, who is okay and what they need. Wendy has a special guest tonight. Yes, we do. Councilman with san jose and woody baker from the red cross. Thank you for your good work. First, councilman, tell me about what youre hearing from your constituents. Were hearing a lot not south bay. We have a very vibrant Filipino American community and theyre very concerned, obviously, but, you know, theres also a lot of people organized not just within the Filipino Community but the entire community is coming together as we see here tonight but the outpouring of support. We were talking earlier about the generosity of the Filipino Community and this is our chance to give back. Absolutely. Filipinoamericans are so active in the nursing field involved in taking care of us. This is the time for all of us to get together and take care of those in the philippines who have suffering and take care of the filipinoamericans who have family and friends there that they are worried about. Lets all come together and help those in the philippines in this tragic time. Thank you so much for that. Woody, tell us a little bit about the effort in the philippines. Are you becoming more able to get the help out to the outlying areas now . Yes, we are. Telethons like this are a huge help getting the funding which we transfer to the philippines red cross so they can get water, food, medicine, shelter, supplies and things of that nature. The money is right there. You have a lot of boots on the ground in the philippines. How many members of the Philippine Red Cross are working . Quite a few working since before the storm hit. So there are about 1,000 paid staff and about 500,000 volunteers staff and again they worked on evacuating people, sheltering them in advance and, of course, working now very hard. Thank you very much for that. Thank you for your good work. Thank you, councilman. Ken, back to you. All right. So im here with chanel from the raiderettes. Youre taking a lot of calls. Pick that one up and well listen in. Hello, thank you for calling the cbs bay area typhoon relief funding. This is chanel of the oakland raiders. How may i help you . Every time we have a 500 donatio you will hear a bell ring. Chanel is taking in too much money. She cant talk to me. Paul . Ill tell you what, not a bad place to be. The need for relief in the philippines is immense. Imagine this. Imagine youre standing next to where the ocean normally is. A storm surge is a water level rise because of all of that wind thats being shoved toward the islands in the philippines. That water level rows between 20 and 25 feet. Literally wiping some communities off the map. There is a huge need there. And even five or ten dollars can help out. 18885helpsu is what to do. Well be here until 7 00. Talking about our local weather, high temperatures today chillier than yesterday, huh . Napa im starting at the bottom, 59 degrees. Thats it. San jose 64. Fremont you hit 64. A foggy start even in concord. Your high 67. Livermore avoided much of the fog. High of 74. Gilroy 75 degrees for a high today. But lets talk about the rainfall or lack of it. Kpix 5 hidef doppler is completely dry again. Thats been a theme for three or four months. Out of the past oh, about 5 months or so, as we advance our computer, we are going to be talking about rainfall only on three days in San Francisco out of the past 142 days. Now, were not into the meat of the wet season yet but thats extraordinarily dry. The forecast will stay dry for a while. Heres what to expect. That big ring ridge of High Pressure is moving a little that big ridge of High Pressure is moving a little bit but not enough. It will bring cold air down to dallas and houston, texas. Offered a solution that co help people remain in polics that have been president obama to trying to fix a much criticized consequence of his Healthcare Plan. Today he offered a solution that could help people remain in policies that have been canceled. Julie watts explains here in california thats about a million people. Reporter we hear from them all the time. Some applaud move, others question the effectiveness but here in california fixing the problem is complicated. 287 a month. And thats affordable. Reporter cathy may have gotten relief from her obamacare headache. Last month her insurer canceled her husbands high deductible policy along with 1. 1 million other californians. But now they may be able to keep them after all. The bottom line is, insurers can extend plans that otherwise would be canceled into 2014. Reporter notice the president said they can extend current plans. They dont have to. I will do everything within my power to urge that californias Insurance Companies and hmos follow the president s call. Reporter but california Insurance Commissioner dave jones says its not that simple here in california. It will first require the states insurance marketplace to change a key policy. Unlike most other states, californias Health Insurance exchange requires all policies adhere to the rules of the Affordable Care act and provide a wide range of coverages. Its a provision jones says insurers demanded from covered california before they would participate in the program. I think that was a mistake. Reporter now jones says he is urging covered california to change that rule. I have asked covered california to take this action immediately. I think covered california would be remiss if they didnt do this. Reporter and a consumer watchdog says while making the change wont be easy it doesnt have to be hard. They just need to send out notices to the public saying, look, your plan cancellation is premature. You actually have another year to make your decisions. If you want to cancel you can but you dont have to. Reporter even with the president s about face today, there is no guarantee that policies will be reinstated at the same price and at best they would only be reinstated for a year meaning even if cathy can get her husbands policy back it could cost her and she wont likely be able to keep it for long. Now, the Insurance Commission also called on insurers to issue new notices offering the customers the option to renew their policies. But the Health Insurance industry issued its own Statement Today saying changing the rules could destabilize the market and result in higher premiums for everyone. Its like a knot. It just keeps getting more and more tangled. Were trying to untangle it but it wont do it. Reporter then you get into californias portion of the policy and how we differ from everything else. Thats another knot. Reporter even we get confused reporting on it constantsly. The Worlds Largest wind tunnel is here in the bay area. All of it goes to the relief fund that we have created that will go to the filipino people in the islands right now hurting so badly after this major league typhoon. Paul, we are talking about this on the air the other day, some of the incredible wind speeds and just the phenomenon of this typhoon. Its crazy to think of a wall of water, ken, some 20 to 25 feet high. These islands for the most part were lower islands. They were not high in elevation. Some had mountains but many didnt. Many people lived along the water. Youre talking about the water rising temporarily. 25 feet. So if you are in a one story building, theres nowhere to go. And when that water comes in and then it takes off, theres nothing left. In some of those islands, there is literally nothing left but the people who are left behind. So were talking about this isnt just a small need. This is a significant need to keep these people alive until the infrastructure can be rebuild. They need food, supplies, medical supplied and need to get out. The money is so important. A lot of people think 5 or 10 doesnt make a difference but it does when you add it all together.
