The possibility of lightning strikes, very dry, hot windy weather and this dry vegetation all throughout this area. I do want to start off with a map to show where the fires are burning. 10 fires in all with 5,000 firefighters in calaveras, lake placer, san bernardino, humbolt. This means bay area firefighters are assisting in those areas. Bay area Fire Departments are sending crews there around the state and banning residential burns in this area. In santa clara, alameda, contra costa. They have helicopters and dozers ready. Red flag warnings are up for the foothills, the mountain areas and the Coastal Regions. A good portion of Northern California is at risk for combination of dry lightning and gusty winds. That with the dry conditions is going to elevate extremely high. In april we did have lightning storms that touched down since then. Its been usually dry. What this is called is cheat grass. Its all over the hillsides in the Oakland Hills. That is why the fire danger is high and when we talk about a red flag alert. Its not just because its hot. All the conditions have to be ripe and very serious. Thats why cal fire issued the red flag alert. Frank. Lets talk about that red flag warning. Are there specific rules weve got to follow because of that. Thats a good question. Doesnt mean just to be on alert. No bbqs or open fires in the park areas. If you have a permit for such, theres a chance they could be revoked. And not supposed to use any equipment that could spark a fire. When in doubt, contact cal fire to ask questions about what you can and cannot do in the area. There also could be road closures if you are up in the park areas because they dont want that element of people bringing into the mix possibility of fire equipment, cars, cigarettes and the like in the park region. Just to be aware that firefighters are dealing with the other wildfires. Resources are thin. A Little Common sense goes a long way. Sue kwon live, thanks. The project has cost big bucks and a lot of headaches. And state law makers are asking how did the new project become such a mess . Ann looks into the inquiry underway. Thank you, lawrence. Californias high speed rail project may be derailed over how its managing funding. A judge said the agency in charge of it was not following the rules. San franciscos columnist Melissa Griffin smans what that means. Good morning. Good morning, guys. What was the big mistake . It is a big one. Back in 2008 when voters endorsed high speed rail, said give us 10 billion. We will get the additional money from federal funding, from private investment and voters said okay, as long as were not splitting the whole bill. You are going to be able to get other people lined up. Fast forward to now when 2. 7 billion of that 10 billion taxpayers approved is about to be spent on a segment of track. The court on friday said you still have not identified an additional 20 billion that its supposed to materialize to finish that useable segment of track. Thats not what voters were promised. Not what the law says and you guys are going to have to stop even though the state legislature approved that expenditure. Still not entirely clear what the remedy is going to be here but the court said its pretty clear it is absolutely clear no reasonable expectation of funds materializing to the extent we need them to to fund what we need. So if they are going to build, get us from san jose down to fresno. Which is the current situation. The proposal right now is 2. 7 in taxpayer money and 3 billion in federal money. And doesnt go anywhere thats useful and the state admits it is not useable track. The court said i dont know what you are doing here. This isnt even contemplated in the law. Even though you can fund that section, no, no, no you got to build a useable section and identify the full funding. You cant build half a highway. As soon as you get the shovels in the ground, youve got to keep going. And taxpayers are going to be on the hook in a number of public works contracts. If you can get going, then somebody is going to have to come out of pocket once you have a piece of track, you have to keep funding it. Thats what the authorities pears to be doing appears to be doing. So harsh, the bay area Fire Departments had to send help to those crews and cal fire is now banning specific activity including residential burns in santa clara, santa cruz, contra costa and alameda. If you are visiting area parks, you could zeroeds closed and a ban on restriction of local bbqs and firefighters asking residents not to use equipment that has possibility of sparking fires.
