I showed the video to the district which is set to hire a small army of water waste inspectors to talk to homeowners. Anybody who gets a knock on the door saying fix your sprinklers i can imagine them saying, well, youre a hypocrite. [ laughter ] well, were were were checking our sprinklers as often as we can. Hopefully when we go out and encourage people to fix their problems, they will realize that we are just pointing out something that needs to be addressed just like you pointed out something today that we needed to address. Youre welcome. Thank you. Reporter and so to that credit, after we told them about the busted sprinklers, they jumped on it and fixed them within the same day. They are guessing that about a couple of dozen gallons per day was wasted with their sprinklers. Not a big deal in and of itself but over time, on top of everybody else out there wasting water with their sprinklers, thats when you have a big problem. Thats why its important to stay on top of the overspraying. Over the next three weeks they will recruit, hire and train inspectors. They should hit the streets sometime at the end of the month or beginning of september. Live in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. 5 16 now. Time to check on our weather. This is a good safety reminder. It can be tempting to aggressively change lanes when traffic is backing up. But the lane next to you may not be moving as quickly as it appears at first. And youre only shaving a few minutes off your commute at best and putting everyone around you at risk for accident. Thank you, aaron, for that great reminder. Thank you. Hawaii is not a vacation paradise today. No. The big island is the first in line to be hit by Tropical Storm iselle. Cbs reporter bigad shaban is in hilo this morning. Bigad, has iselle hit the island of hawaii yet . Reporter yeah. We actually began feeling its outer bands several hours ago but its the eye of the storm is just sort of coming onshore right now. Its hovering over us continuing to douse the big island. Once it clearance the Air National Guard is expected to use helicopters to assess damage. But its feared that iselle could dump as much as a foot of rain more in some areas here on the big island before moving to the rest of the hawaiian islands. Bigad, what have they done in hawaii to prepare . What kind of challenges are they facing right now . Reporter yeah. I think first and foremost is they wanted to keep people safe. You had a flood of tourists who were trying to rearrange their travel plans get out of what they thought was going to be paradise and go back home ending their trips early. Hawaiian airlines waiving its change fees and hundreds of passengers that contacted the airlines in hopes of changing plans. You might expect, there were long lines at the airport today and then there were also some 30 emergency shelters set up throughout the island by the american red cross. You had several hundred people turn out to those shelters. We spoke to some of them who said they didnt want to take the chance. Some residents said they have weathered storms before and this would be no different. Others said it wasnt worth the risk. Although if you think about it, this is a unique situation. Its been 22 years since a Tropical Storm or hurricane has made a direct hit on hawaii. And speaking of this island specifically here, the big island, also known as hawaii, a hurricane has never made a direct hit here as far back as when records started some 50 years ago. So theres not a lot of experience of that direct hit. But it seems like everybody on the island, they really took those took the necessary precautions. Reporter they did. Well before those outer bands started, you had people boarding up their homes and businesses. In fact, you had some people doing it last minute today too as they saw the storms intensify. You had hurricane julio which is of course that second storm which is also on sort of somewhat similar path headed towards the island, although its on a more northerly track. But when people saw that intensify today it actually jumped to a category 3 hurricane with winds of about 115 Miles Per Hour. You have gusts that could go as high as 150 Miles Per Hour. So we spoke to one Business Owner today who said when he saw that, he said there was no question about boarding up the business. He decided to stay open as long as he could today but he started that boarding up process early this morning. All right. Heeding those warnings. All right, thank you, bigad shaban, in hilo, hawaii.
