Start this friday morning. Snipers opened fire on Police Officers during peaceful protests over the shootings of two black men. 11 injured, 5 officers dead. Here in the bay area, Oakland Police faced off with protestors throughout the night after they caused destruction and shutdown of freeway. Well get to that in a moment. First authorities in texas have ended the standoff with a suspect connected to the fatal shootings there. Officials say two snipers positioned themselves above crowds gathered yesterday to carry out the attack. Don champion has the story reporter Dallas Police say officers were ambushed thursday night when snipers opened fire on police during a protest downtown. [ gunfire ] reporter people ran for their lives. Its almost like the gunshots were coming at us. Reporter officers used patrol cars to take cover. We know that rifles were used to injure and kill dallas officers and a dart officer. Reporter 11 officers were shot, five died, including Brent Thompson the firstever dart officer killed in the line of duty. Another dart officer misty mcbryde was shot in the arm. Her young daughter spoke to reporters outside the hospital. One woman was shots in the leg. She shielded her son. Three people were taken into custody after the shooting including two information seen tossing camouflage bags into the back of a black mercedes. A standoff with a suspect in a parking garage ended this morning. Police say that individual died of a self inflicted gunshot wound. Tensions were already high in dallas and beyond following the killing of two black men this week. Lets be clear, theres no possible justification for these type of attacks or any violence against Law Enforcement. Reporter the governor of texas says now is the time to unite as americans. Don champion, cbs news. The faa has implemented temporary flight restrictions at the Dallas Airport and will be lifted around 11 30 a. M. A man was wrongfully identified as a suspect. Mark hughes was we had to out carrying a gun but he was allowed to have it under the open carry law. And he had nothing do with the Police Shootings. Cops are human. They dont want anyone to be hurt. But my brother easily could have been killed because somebody that was irresponsible identified him as a suspect not as a person of interest but a suspect. Hughes says when he saw the tweet he immediately approached police and turned over his gun. He says he is now getting death threats. And we just checked that tweet is still up. In oakland, this was the scene overnight. Chopper 5 is overhead as protestors shut down 880 near broadway. You can see the backup it caused. There were about 500 people there. Anne makovec is following the story reporter 880 is reopened. Thats the good news for the morning commute. That highway reopened about 1 a. M. Almost 5 hours after it was closed in both directions. The protest in oakland began down at about 7 00. Over 1,000 people gathered, marched through the streets of downtown oakland, taking over frank ogawa plaza. Some climbed up on big rigs, lighting fires and say they are desperate to have their message heard. Its a give and take word. Sometimes you got to do things to show somebody how you feel about something. Whether they got family, whether they feel bad about it, whether they think they can do something to us, thats how we feel when they are killing us when you see it on tv. There was vandalism in oakland including the word murderer on the door of oakland pd headquarters. Police officers are doubling up in cars so they will have at least two officers on patrol in each vehicle at least until the tensions ease about all these shootings, emotions still running high. Anne makovec, kpix 5. The governor of minnesota spoke at a protest in st. Paul where one of this weeks Deadly Police shootings happened. Governor mark dayton told friends and relatives of the man who was killed by police that in his words, justice will be served. These killings have sparked something on a national level. Galvanizing protestors in cities all over. This was the scene in portland yesterday evening. Thousands took to the streets for protests. And in washington, dc, a parade of protestors marched to the capitol building. Farther down the street, groups gathered in front of the white house calling to end police brutality. This again is in the wake of the two Police Shootings of two black men caught on camera. This morning, facebook is apologizing for taking down the video of the minnesota shooting. Their explanation . Facebook told buzzfeed it was because of a technical glitch. They say they restored the video and were able to pinpoint the problem. The ceo weighed in saying, the images we have seen this week are graphic and heartbreaking and they shine a light on the fear that millions of members of our Community Live with every day. Traffic moving nicely out of marin county this morning no delays south 101 from 580 the Richmond San Rafael bridge into San Francisco. Elsewhere the bay bridge off to a good start. It is friday light with no delays at the toll plaza. No roadwork on the upper or lower decks of the bay bridge so its clear all the way into San Francisco, as well. And taking a look at the san mateo bridge, so far, so good westbound 92 between 880 and 101. Thats an easy 13 to 14 minutes this morning with no theres once you get on 101 if you head northbound towards sfo. Today federal investigators head to emeryville to figure out how a sixalarm fire turned a construction site into a total wreck. The National ResponseTeam Includes certified fire investigators as well as other experts from the atf. They will study the remains of the blaze on 3800 san pablo avenue that destroyed a building under construction, Auto Repair Shop and four neighboring townhouses. Ricardo orozco was allegedly involved with celeste guap a teenager who had sex with other officers. She says she had sex with at least three other officers before she turned 18. Time now 4 41. They vanished in the Angeles National fores june weeks of searching for these missing hikers ended in tragedy. They vanished in the Angeles National forest june 20 right where two fires burned nearly 5400 acres. And yesterday, a relative says he found their bodies. The Los Angeles CountySheriffs Department said it did all it could to find the two men during the fire but the situation was too dangerous. Its why a relative never quit the search. We saw, like, five birds on top of the canyons. So me and my fr got worried. So we started hiking up the canyon all the way up to the top of this mountain and sadly we saw the two bodies. They were burned. The Coroners Office still has to identify the victims. The remains are set to be retrieved sometime today. Bart officials are renewing their efforts to prevent station suicides. Kpix 5s Christin Ayers tells us that a new campaign is already showing promise reporter the bart stations in Downtown Berkeley and San Franciscos embarcadero have a dubious distinction. These are the stations with the highest number of suicides. Eight people have killed themselves on the tracks since 2013. But a campaign to change those numbers is already making a difference. Just look at the ads at some stations. And on the backs of some bart cars. So they decided to put an 800 number on the backs of tickets that would connect people with Suicide Prevention lines in the bay area. Reporter bart worked with eve meyer and an alliance of other prevention specialists to come up with the campaign. First the signs. Then in may, the tickets were printed. The goal. That someone will think twice before harming himself. Seems like it couldnt hurt. I do think for some people, it will have an impact on them. Hopefully, these campaigns stop this kind of action. Reporter the campaign is already having some success. People are calling the hotline and saying they heard about it on bart. The numbers show suicides at bart stations are down. There have been five suicides or attempts on bart property so far this year. There was double that nine at this time last year and eight the year before. Of course, im overjoyed that the numbers have dropped. Anything that makes the numbers drop is good. Reporter bart says its too early to call the program a success yet. But this is just the beginning. They are working on replacing these ads with permanent signage that would reach millions of commuters every day. Christin ayers, kpix 5. Winds continue again today to rush onshore and also become variable about 10 to 20 with gusts to 25 and 30. Boy, we had winds clocked at 35 yesterday afternoon towards the evening commute. This is a trough we have been talking about for five days located to the north of the bay area but its enhancing our marine layer bringing some rain to the northwestern quadrant of the state of california but what its doing for us is just thickening up the marine layer and were seeing drizzle at the beaches all the way inland today and then rain around pleasanton. You will need the windshield wipers early this morning. You can see by lunchtime the san mateo coast totally socked in. Most of the peninsula is, as well. A warning to wendys customers. Your credit card numbers may have been hacked. The restaurant chain says that hackers breached the security system. Patrons who use their cards during february are at risk. Its unknown how many have been affected. The company says its working with federal Law Enforcement in the ongoing investigation. There has been a national outpouring of grief and anger over Police Shootings and deaths in louisiana and minnesota including in the bay area with protestors took over a freeway last night but in dallas, texas the unthinkable happened. Gunfire broke out hitting and killing multiple officers. At least five Police Officers are dead this morning, six others in the hospital. And overnight, police ended a lengthy standoff with one of the suspects likely connected to the fatal shooting. At least two snipers are suspected to have carried out the attack. And, of course, this has caused grief in the Dallas Community and also across the country. We are seeing a lot of outpouring of support for Law Enforcement there
