Heres a live look at interstate 80 at carlson boulevard and you can see how quickly even at this Early Morning hour, 4 31, that traffic is stopped. Over at the Golden Gate Bridge, an accident overnight still has lanes blocked at the tollbooth but traffic is light. There is afog advisory for those going across the span. Tear gas, stun grenades and thousands of protestors outside President Trumps rally in arizona last night. The protest started out peacefully outside the Convention Center in phoenix. As andria borba reports, clashes between demonstrators and police started just as the rally wrapped up inside. Reporter President Trump returned to phoenix for the First Time Since taking office. It is finally time to rebuild our country to take care of our people reporter he was fresh off the tour of a Border Patrol center near the mexican border. He should have had a jury. But i think he will be just fine. Reporter the states two republican senators mccain and flake is publicly clashed with the president. The city of berkeley is bracing for another rally this weekend. The mayor is urging people to stay away from sundays demonstration for their own safety. He says that groups will use it as a platform to spread their message but one organizer told us that she wants nothing to do with white supremacists, racist or violent counterprotestors. The people are Walking Around like this violent terrorists in masks and this mayor does nothing about it. We stand for free speech. Violence is not free speech. City is city working out the security details for sunday including separating the two sides with barriers and and one day ban on wells. The conservative Group Planning saturdays rally at crissy field could receive a formal permit anytime now. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is objecting to the move saying the event amounts to a white supremacist rally. The groups leader who publicly denounced neonazis at a recent event says its untrue. They are not white premises, theyre diverse. How can they be accountable for people just showing up . They are accountable and well hold them accountable for it. Patriot prayer has invited a group called the oath keepers to provide security on saturday. You may have seen armed members of the group at previous protests. They are expected to encounter counterprotesters. Groups of their own going to be at Civic Center Plaza friday and saturday. Crews are keeping an eye on hot spots on a wildfire in dublin. It started at the Camp Parks Army base yesterday. At one point the flames were burning near a road that separates the base from a neighborhood. 200acres burned. It was 90 contained. The heat is on. Right now were tracking an accident involving one rollover and couple of other cars and that has traffic backed up along westbound 80. The crash is westbound 80 approaching central avenue. The backup extends beyond carlson towards cutting boulevard. So if you are ready to head out the door and you can avoid westbound 80, i would do so. You dont want to be in this backup. Use 580, the richmond san rafael, looking much better as your ultimate. The city of San Francisco is suing a landlord who made his tenants live in a death trap. The squalid underground in the mission is like a dungeon with no windows and only one exit. Kpix 5s Katie Nielson reports. Reporter this is the entrance to the apartments where almost 30 people used to live in the illegal units, dungeonlike. One tenant we spoke with said it was much worse. [ speaking spanish ] i prayed to god every day, just let me wake up in the morning. Let me family see another day. Reporter claudia soto and her family moved into the illegal unit four years ago when they first came to the United States from nicaragua. They paid 1,000 a month to live in one room at the end of the basement. [ speaking spanish ] it was so dark i couldnt tell if it was day or night. There were no windows and only one door to get out. Reporter the city acted. A 911 call on Christmas Day in 2016 led firefighters down to the basement unit. They wrote the report that led to an inspection from the city. The city filed suit today against Melissa Mendoza from hillsboro who owns the building and Ernesto Perez of daly city the master attend and landlord who they say was responsible for the illegal basement unit. It was one of the worst conditions we have seen in terms of their actual living conditions. [ speaking spanish ] pipes from the laundromat upstairs leaked all the time and there were wires and extension cords running everywhere. And there were elderly and children living here all in these dark cramped rooms. Reporter her unit was at the far end of the basement furthest from the door. [ speaking spanish ] i always worried about a fire. I knew if something happened, myself and my family wouldnt have a chance to get out alive. Reporter claudia says most of the people in the basement around her were undocumented, many worked construction like her husband and son or worked in hotels and restaurants. The original had to be demolished about five months ago because of damage from winter storms. The man accused of killing an offduty firefighter and injuring another made a court appearance. You can see lawyers blocked our view of Oliver Juinio in court. Prosecutors say he shot the two offduty firefighters thursday night. Authorities dont believe that he or the victims knew each other. Prosecutors say the firefighters did nothing to spark the violence. It does appear to be an unprovoked attack in which both these offduty oakland firefighters were shot without warning and without provocation. The suspect is due back in court in september. A memorial has been scheduled for the firefighter who died. The service for jake walter is going to be at 11 00 in the morning on saturday. Some in piedmont are calling for the mayor to step down following his statements on facebook. Christin ayers shows us how locals confronted him at a recent council meeting. Reporter piedmont mayor jeff wheeler is under fire because of what he has been posting on facebook. Having jeffs ideology public like that, um, takes piedmont back 50 years. Reporter piedmont resident Conna Mccarthy showed us partisan posts by the mayor. She read his most inflammatory comments to piedmont city council. Black lives matter encourages cop killing. The left is dangerous and un american. Transgenders are mentally ill. The left is intellectually bankrupt. Democrats are the plantation slave masters of today. Reporter conna says whats worse wheeler refused to hold a moment of silence after the charlottesville protest. He said to me, the moment of silence you will get is i will not engage with you anymore. Kpix 5s betty yu breaks the frightening encounter down. It sparked a 12hour standoff. Reporter the drama began when a 911 call came in reporting a suspicion person covered in blood. It led to a massive manhunt and standoff that lasted nearly 12 hours. Now were getting a firsthand look at the Surveillance Video of the crime. Surveillance video shows a white pickup speeding by and then turning up a driveway. A neighbors camera shows a person near the drivers side of the car and then the driver rams right into the fence. One of the officers said there was a dispute between a tenant that was moving out and the landlords son, became heated and then the person attempted to run them down. Reporter San Jose Police say that person is 26yearold stephen maciel. You can see him backing out of the driveway and speeding off. He was found covered in blood about four miles away from the scene of the crime hiding in a garage. Before maciel took off, police say shots were fired just after noon on friday. I hear one shot. And then i was like, okay, i need to get my kids away from the front because they were sleeping out front. And then i hear two more shots. Reporter police say maciels truck was found riddled with bullets. Blood and shell casings were found inside. And the truck was also stolen. Its disturbing, but all our neighbors are pretty good neighbors. And he is gone from our neighborhood. So its a little reassuring that he is gone and he is in custody. Its definitely unfortunate this type of violence happens. I wish it wouldnt. You know, you just do the best we can to protect ourselves. But, you know, typically its people that know each other as opposed to just random violence. Reporter maciel was treated for a nonlifethreatening gunshot wound and the person he rammed had nonlifethreatening injuries. Maciel is booked into the Santa Clara County jail on charges including assault with a Deadly Weapon and an outstanding felony warrant. In san jose, betty yu, kpix 5. Skydrone5 taking flight over lake tahoe just as federal officials are making clear how they will preserve the area for future generation. Congress passed a bill to set aside an additional 415 million.
