Russia says its protect its people. What you call it depends on where you come from. This is what it looks like in crimea tonight. The white house says forces control the peninsula that make up the southern portion of ukraine. T it appears they are preparing an occupation. The u. S. , European Union and nato all say russia is violating international law. The question is what can they do about it. In prowestern kiev what they are do something protesting tens of thousands have gathered in the capitol, demonstrating against russias actions. We have learned tonight that secretary of state john kerry is on his way to ukraine tomorrow. Off the top tonight we have two reports. Well hear from liz palmer in crimea in a moment, but first, Charlie Dagata in kiev. protestors screaming reporter anger, outrage and fear fill kievs Independence Square today. Prime minister Arseny Yatsenyuk warned that russias military intervention in crimea has brought ukraine to the brink of disaster. This is the red alert. This is not the threat. This is actually the declaration of war to my country. Reporter the newly formed government put the army on high alert and called on men of fighting age, hundreds of thousands of reservists, to be ready to take up arms. Thousand of demonstrators rallied against russias actions call president putin dictator and a liar. This sign says, putin, hands off ukraine. In the place where they are still mourning those killed in protest that brought the russianbacked president down, activist told us there is little appetite for more bloodshed. Of course im worried. Of course. Because i dont want to have war. And i dont want more people to die here for our independence. Reporter but every man of fighting age we spoke to like lawyer oleg pekatch said they were ready to do just that. What putin is doing right now in crimea it is absolute madness for everyone, for putin, for russia, for russian people, for ukraine, for europe, for the whole world. Reporter are you willing to fight . Im more than sure. Reporter nearly everyone told us they were hoping if not entirely convinced that russias military intervention would stop in crimea and wouldnt advance into further areas in the ukraine. And jeff, for all their patriotism, theyre well aware the Ukrainian Forces dont have the firepower or hardware to match the russian military. Jeff Charlie Dagata, thank you. In crimea itself the Russian Forces are consolidating their grip with the support of a largely friendly local population. Elizabeth palmer is in the crimea capitol of simferopol. Reporter as many as 20,000 russian soldiers have been on the move across crimea in the past 24 hours. And theyve taken over without firing a shot. Though there are small pockets of resistance like those two bases where the ukrainian soldiers still loyal to the government in kiev have barricaded themselves in. But many Ukrainian Security forces have switched sides including the head of the navy denis berezovsky, who was only appointed by kiev yesterday, and today he announced in essence he would join the russians. Also, on our way here we ran into a road block on the crimean border. There Ukrainian Interior Ministry troops had hoisted the russian flag on their barricade. They were backed up by local militia who stole our body armour and helmets and then told to us get out of there. In the end we managed to get into crimea by coming on the train. We have had a walk around the capitol here in simferopol. Its very quiet. We did see some russian soldiers standing by their armored personnel carrier near the parliament. And asked them how long they thought they would be here. They smiled and said they didnt know. By and large they have been welcomed by the russian speaking population of crimea and just until a short while ago you could even hear some patriotic russian songs being sung at a rally down the road in a park. Of course, there are thousands of residents of crimea who are not happy to seat russian soldiers, who are afraid of this invasion. But for the moment, theyre keeping their heads down, jeff. Jeff liz palmer, thank you. Secretary of state john kerry today called russias move, an incredible act of aggression. Hell travel to kiev tomorrow for a very visible show of support. For more were joined by chief White House Correspondent major garrett, major. Reporter jeff, the white house has no military plan to eject russia from the crimea even though it considers its military moves there a blatant violation of international law. The United States is working on a package of economic sanctions and is considering blocking russian access to key Bank Accounts and Global Financial networks if it does not reverse course. The white house is offering to provide International Mediation and observers in crimea to address russian concerns about the rights of minority loyalists living there. In the meantime, the white house has pulled out of all preparations of a g8 summit scheduled for june in sochi, russia, and cancelled high level talks with russia on expanding trade and energy exports. President obama discussed all of these moves today with german chancellor Angela Merkel and british Prime Minister david cameron. Top officials says there is a way out if russia backs off militarily but if it does not the west is prepared to tighten the economics noose. As one top official said, vladimir putin, the russian president , may believe he has acted like 19th Century Power broker, but he will soon discover to his dismay that his country lives in a globalized 21st century economy. Jeff. Glor major garret, thank you. We move now to the weather. Once again a sizable storm is moving across the country.
