Independence. Yes or no . We get the answer this week. Captioni this is captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs e this is the cbs evening news. 01 good evening good evening, i am jeff glor, british Prime MinisterDavid Cameron did not mince words in a nationally televised address today he says his country must destroy isis. The speech came one day after isis released video of the execution of british aid worker david hanes, the group says they are also holding another worker alan hennings. En two americans have been killed on camera by isis. We have two reports this evening, we begin with Charlie Dagata in london. British leaders in downing street were summoned to an emergency meeting. With David Cameron, who described as pure evil the beheading of david hanes by isis militants. They boast of their brutality. They claim to do this in the name of islam. That is nonsense. Islam is a religion of peace. They are not muslims, they are monsters. Mr. Hanes in the balkans where he lived back in 2003. Our office normally goes across to belgrade. His family said he was devoted to helping people in trouble, and today his brother mike said the reach of isis expends far beyond the war zone. Robert, remains the biggest threat to the wholesale safety of every person in the world. The Prime Minister praised the courage of david hanes calling him a british hero. He vowed that britain would hunt down those responsible and bring them to justice no matter how long it takes. Cameron said the uk has an iron determination to destroy isis, although he stopped short of authorizing british air irrikes. And britains hostage crisis is not over. Officials confirmed today that isis militants are holding another aid worker alan henning, threatening he would be executed too. As in the videos of u. S. Journalist james foley and Stephen Sotloff the first british victim appears with the same executioner with an apparent british accent. People across this country would have been sickened by the fact that it could have been a british citizen, a british whtizen who could have carried out this unspeakable act. It is the very opposite of everything our country stands for. The execution of a british citizen has piled pressure on the Prime Minister to get ugugher on isis, including increased calls for britain to join the u. S. In launching its own airstrikes, british aircraft have provided support role for the u. S. Military campaign, but that is about it. Jeff . Charlie, Prime Minister cameron also has his hands full coming with the upcoming vote on scottish independence, how does that matter complicate this one . Well, jeff, the scots have largely been opposed to air strikes and the idea of uk getting any more deeply involved in another conflict in the middle east is besides the fact the victim david hanes is scottish, the vote is going to be close and cameron cant risk losing a single vote to independents. Charlie dagata, thank you very much. The fight is taking place in iraq and syria, the plan is coming together in paris. World leaders gathered tomorrow to address the threat from isis and today the state Department Says they are getting more help. Secretary of state john kerry says some arab nations have offered to strike airstrikes against isis. Here is Julianna Goldman from washington. The u. S. Says it has found arab nations willing to commit military assets, some even ground troops, but it is too early to name specific countries. Secretary of state john kerry says he expects regional allies to help on a number of fronts, they range from humanitarian aid to going after isis finances and its sophisticated propaganda machine. We are not looking to put troops on the ground, there are some who have offered to do so, but we are not looking for that at this moment anyway. But it is securing military commitments that will be the most critical, and the Administration Officials continued to promise there will be no u. S. Combat troops in iraq or syria. White house chief of staff Dennis Mcdonough said on face the nation, it will be up to regional partners and syrian fighters. We will provide our unique capability in air strikes and intelligence and in training and then it will be up to the syrians on that side of the border to finish the job. One of those allies could be jordan, according to republican Michael Mccall who chairs the House Homeland Security committee. I met the prince of jordan, just two days ago, who said he is ready today to put his troops into syria to fight isis. Congress is expected to take up the president s 500 million request to train and equip moderate Syrian Rebels this week, the measure is expected to pass but not without controversy. This threat has been out there for over a year, and finally the white house started to Pay Attention to it. And senator Lindsey Graham told fox news the white house cannot afford national security. It will take an army to beat an army, and this idea will never have any boots on the ground to defeat them in syria is fantasy. Were entering a critical few days, president obama will be meeting with general john alan the u. S. Envoy charged with building the coalition against isis, and he has his work cut out for him. The president will be in tampa meeting with Central Command and, jeff, secretary kerry and secretary john hagel will testify before Congress Later this week. Julianna goldman, thank you very much. More fallout over the nfls handling of Domestic Abuse cases today. Just before game time the Carolina Panthers said they were deactivating will hardy and especially the commission of Roger Goodell where there are now serious questions about the appropriateness of him continuing on his commissioner of the league, there are a test when it comes to Domestic Violence, my stance is not one of indifference. This case is just the latest, that they have had dealing with players and their legal troubles, Michael Mccain ask a sports expert with the university of new hampshire. I think the nfl has to provide greater clarity. What is an offense under their various conduct policies, whether the league whether were talking about the leagues personal conduct policy or the new Domestic Violence policy. Where there isnt clarity as to what is an offense. Is it a conviction . Is it an arrest . Is it just an accusation . In minnesota the only way fans will see Adrian Peterson today son a ticket stub. The superstar runningback was benched by his team after he was charged with child abuse on friday. Petersons dismissal comes in the same week the nfl suspended Baltimore Ravens runningback ray rice after a video emerged showing him knocking out his wife at a casino elevator. With so many incidents, the nfl and commissioner Roger Goodell are under fire. This has been an extraordinarily meaning will week for the nfl and especially its commissioner Roger Goodell, where there are now serious questions about the appropriateness of him continuing on as commissioner of the league. There are a variety of groups that have argued that he should be removed. Two of those groups flew goodell must go banners over several stadiums. And on twitter, goodellmustgo was trending it. One player who did suit up today was San Francisco 49er the ray mcdonald, he was arrested in august for Domestic Violence against his pregnant fiance, as for greg hardy, and peterson, jeff, they havent been officially suspended by the teams or the nfl so it is up in the air if both players will be next in the field next year. Thank you very much. Hillary clinton was the featured speaker today at a famous political event in iowa. The first in the nation caucus state where she finished third in 2008. And her appearance on, unsurprisingly is fueling more speculation about her plans for 2016, nancy cordes is there hello, iowa. I am back political intrigue was the main course at this years harkins steak fry at 5,000 iowans and 200 journalists all try to divine whether Hillary Clintons presence here means she is running for president. Is this for another campaign . We are just here today to support democrats. The annual harkin steak guy founded by tom hark quinn is the premiere democratic event in a state that eats, sleeps and breathes president ial politics. Good afternoon, iowa. Then senator Hillary Clinton attended the steak fry back in 2007, along with her top five democratic opponents. Havent joe biden who is mulling his own president ial bid headlined the event last year. On stage today with her husband sitting behind her, clinton played coy. I have got a few things on my mind these days. [ cheers and applause ] the former secretary of state has said she wont announce her plans until january, but a Des Moines Register poll earlier found 88 of iowan democrats think she should run again and the Shadow Campaign run by her supporters was on full display today. With 100 volunteers from all over the country signing up supporters in this key caucus state. It is true, i am thinking about it. [ cheers and applause ] but, but for today, that is not why i am here. Oh i am here for the steak. Senator harkins who is retiring after 40 years in Congress Worked to stoke the suspense too. President clinton and Hillary Clinton are now the comeback couple in america. Iowa was supposed to be the state that cemented Hillary Clintons front runner status in 2008, instead, she came in a surprise third and her Campaign Never fully recovered. Will scotland leave the United Kingdom . That story when the cbs evening news continues. Nchypiy as we noted earlier scottish voters will decide in four days to break away from the United Kingdom and form their own independent nation. Mark phillips in ed bro tells us the contest is going right down to the wire. What was once considered literally a pipe dream is now a real possibility. Scotlands independence debate is heating up. Weekend opinion polls say next thursdays vote is too close to call. Scots are evenly split between those who will vote to stay in the United Kingdom, where they have been for three centuries, and those who want to break away and form an independent country. Alex salmon the leader of the yes campaign for independence insists history is on his side. This is an example of a country that has been progressing in a government for 100 years. But salmon has problems. He has promised an independent scotland would use the british pound as its currency but the rest of the uk has said forget it and some of scotlands big banks have got the legitimators saying economic uncertainties would force them to. The no or Better Together side says the risks of independence are too great. It has become a contest of competing loyalties. I would hate to break away to something that has been a tradition in my family and my friends for over 300 years. This vote is about more than the future of scotland, even more than the future of the United Kingdom, it also involves nato and the united states. Why . One word. Nukes. Britains fleet of trident missile subs, its Nuclear Deterrent is based in scotland and the yes side says an independent country would throw them out. Scotland would be a nuclear free zone. George robertson is a former uk defense minister and former secretarygeneral of nato. We are moving into very uncharted and dangerous water, if we go down this route. Scotland is already in uncharted waters, the unthinkable has become the possible. Mark phillips, cbs news, edinburg. Glor up next, millennials move away from credit cards. Is that moving their credit score the wrong way . Glor the way we pay is changing dramatically. A new study by bank rate says 63 percent of those between the ages of 18 and 29 do not have a credit card. Debit cards, the choice these days, and while that can avoid debt there can be some disadvantages. Here to discuss the cbs News Business analyst jill schlesinger. Jill, always good to see you. What is behind this trend . These kids grew up in a once in a generation recession. Iit really booked sthenl and saw the credit bubble burst, it affected them their family and friends, they are weighed down by Student Loans and as a result they dont want more debt on top of that and they are turning to debit cards but remember the debit cards they dont establish a Credit History and could make it hard to buy a car or house in the future. All these seem like valid concerns, not building up the debt. Yes, i guess i would feel better if there wasnt so much ms. Information, a recent survey found 40 percent of the mill yen thals cat carrying a balance actually improves your credit score, obviously that is not so. 33 percent believe that checking your score hurts your credit, 25 percent dont even know their score at all. All. Meanwhile other big credit news, apple pay was announced how does that announce the game . It wont get rid of credit but maybe your plastic credit card, dozen banks have signed up to be part of the apple network. They will pay apple to be part of the network and what they believe there will be so many transactions through apple pay it will more than make up for the amount of money they pay apple. Jill schlesinger, thank you very much. Thank you. Still ahead, prince harry helps close the games dedicated to Wounded Service members. Helps host the games dedicated to Wounded Service members. Guardians of the galaxy crossed that threshold in north american theatre this weekend, worldwide it has made 612 million so far, at least one sequel is already in the works. Up next here, high school chemistry. Not in classrooms, on the fielda glor there has been a lot of bad stories about football this week. This is a good one. It is about tough choices, tough kids, and the best of what can happen when former rivals are forced to come together. Here is don dahler. Reporter hut for 40 years Martin Luther king high and germantown high were arch rivals. Then last year a 304 million budget deficit forced philadelphia to merge the two schools. A scene in the documentary we could be king, what resulted was not pretty. Listen, listen. Emily medley came from germantown. Some people already didnt like some people and then people just wanted didnt want to play. Coach dunns challenge forging a Football Team out of former enemies. In a city where 40 percent of the children live in poverty, dunns other challenge was getting his players to believe life can get better. What football allows us to do is give these kids something to do that is positive, that is associated with school. Lets go. With no money to maintain it the practice field is mostly dirt. The lockerxgymj room is a bad old trailer and for part of last season coach dunn worked for no pay. Thats what we practice, and it is done. Thats what we practice, and thats why we practice in 20degree weather. Yet after losing the first two games last year, dunns passion began to pay off. They began to win. Regardless of all the trauma that comes into their lives and everyone, these guys know they have each other and can depend on each other and i think that makes a family atmosphere. We have to prove a lot of people wrong this year. No one expected us to win. Lets make winning a new tradition around here. Hard work led to success on the field and by extension the classroom. They got, if you dont get your degrees, you cant play like being in trouble and in the school, like you cant just give you something, it gives you motivation. Feel the fire. This is not the time to get tired. This is a time you have to suck it up. Ask coach dunn what his greatest victory is and he will tell you about the 11 players who are now in college. As he works with a new crop of players, the coach faces the same obstacles, but this season he has one advantage. This season his players, his school, his city know what is possible. Despite the odds, they can be champions. Don dahler, cbs news, new york. That is the cbs evening news tonight, later on cbs 60 minutes and first thing tomorrow, cbs this morning.
