Least 19 deaths. 372 roads and bridges are closed, and 17 dams have failed. The waters are still rising, filling not just basements but attics. David begnaud is in the flood zone. Wow, look at that. Reporter this is the scene in andrews, south carolina, a town nearly 100 miles southeast of columbia. All you can see are the rooftops of twostory homes. The local Shriners Club is barely visible. This is a home which was on stilts and is now at risk of floating away from its foundation. Nearly four feet of water has ruined the home of 72yearold shelfia postman. Ive lost everything that i worked 50 years for. Reporter her house is not in a flood zone, so like most people in this area, she does not have flood insurance. Well, i would have to use my lifes savings to rebuild that house. Reporter we boated through the devastation with Andrews Police chief kaynnera capers and state senator ronnie sabb. There is no other way to describe it it is sheer devastation. Reporter we floated down local highway 41, which is now under 16 feet of water. Senator, keep your head down. Reporter at times, we had to duck under power lines. There is such danger that still lurks, and i just hope folks will continue to stay on guard and be mindful that we are not out of the woods yet. Reporter many people have already fled town. Rescuers are now trying to help animals. Two horses were pulled to safety. Never would have thought i would have been able to pull a boat up to my front doorsteps. Reporter as the water continues to rise, andrews residents are still trying to save what they can, which brings us back to shelfia postman, who is trying to focus on the positive. And, of course, having to start over is going to be hard. But were alive, so we thank god for that. Reporter as the sun sets, the water continues to slowly rise. Those homes behind me have been flooded since tuesday, and, scott, theres a 90 chance it will rain here tomorrow. The states governor says the flooding could continue for another ten days. Pelley David Begnaud reporting again for us from the flood zone. David, thank you. To hear House Republicans tell it, paul ryan is their only hope, and ryan hates to hear it. Pressure is building on the former Vice President ial candidate to run for speaker after Kevin Mccarthy dropped out. Well, tonight, nancy cordes tells us ryan is taking refuge in his own house. Right now, im just going to try to make it home for dinner. Reporter paul ryan had the look of a hunted man today, as g. O. P. Begging turned to groveling. Californias darrell issa. I did everything except carry his gym bag this morning trying to get him to do it. Reporter oklahomas tom cole appealed to ryans sense of duty. I hope paul looks inside. I hope he finds that thats the right decision for him. Reporter even utahs jason chaffetz, who is running for speaker himself, said hed prefer ryan. He race, of course, id support him. If paul ryan got into the race, of course, id support him. He would be the kind of person i could get excited about. Reporter ryans colleagues view him as articulate, smart, and driven. We need leadership. Reporter hes cut budget deals with democrats, but still managed to maintain his conservative cred. Were going back to regular order. Reporter and as mitt romneys former running mate, he has a national profile. But the wisconsin father of three has said for years he doesnt want to be speaker. Its a good job for an empty nester. Reporter and theres no guarantee that the conservative hard liners who bucked Speaker John Boehner would cut ryan more slack. Lake thal, of texas, is one of several today who wouldnt commit to back ryan. I want to see who else is in the race. I mean, you dont pick a candidate until you know who all the players are. Reporter why would anyone want to be speaker at this point . That is the 64,000 question. Reporter ryan will have a weeklong recess to think that question over, but its hard to see how anyone could hold out against this kind of pressure. Even romney called him, scott, urging him to run. Pelley nancy cordes on capitol hill. Nancy, thanks. Speaking of ryan, donald trump was doing just that today with our political director and the anchor of face the nation, John Dickerson. Reporter so youd be okay with Speaker Paul Ryan . I would be okay, i would be okay. It may not be him. They have a couple of people im not going to mention names but people i know that are really tough and really smart and right now, thats what we need because the republicans never win. John, they never win. Everything, whether its on obamacare, whether its on the debt ceiling, whether no matter what we have, theres never, ever a victory. So we need a toughness that we just dont have there right now. Pelley and John Dickerson is joining us right now. John, paul ryan probably knows more about the budget than any member of congress. Hes chairman of ways and means, the taxwriting committee. Exactly where he wants to be. Why would he run for this thankless job of speaker . Reporter as you say, he doesnt want to run for it, but he is feeling the pressure, and so while he first said, i dont want this job, hes now at least thinking about it. The reason he wouldnt want this job is that he is more like john boehner, the speaker who is leaving, and Kevin Mccarthy, the speaker who decided not to go, in terms of his ideology and the way he thinks things should get done in the house. He is not like the ultraconservatives. So, if he were speaker, he would likely have those same clashes. He may want to be president some day and those clashes wont make that very easy. Pelley also in politics today, ben carson, the republican candidate, had some interesting things to say about guns and the holocaust. Lets have a look. I think the likelihood of hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed. Reporter hes trying to make what is actually a pretty traditional conservative point that if you have gun control, it leads to tyranny, that its the thin edge of the wedge. But no debate has ever been improved by a holocaust analogy or a nazi analogy and even ben carsons campaign manager, scott, said this is just too powerful and he probably shouldnt talk about this anymore. Pelley John Dickerson, the anchor of face the nation, who do you have on sunday . Reporter we have mr. Trump and mr. Carson. Pelley thank you, john. In the clip we just saw, ben carson was reacting to last weeks mass shooting in roseburg, oregon. President obama went there today, and heres John Blackstone. Reporter the protesters gathered at the roseberg airport carrying both signs and guns, a potential nightmare for the secret service. Alan montgomery made no attempt to hide his holsters. Is this part of your statement here the fact that, as i see it, youve got a couple guns on me . Well, its not necessarily a statement more than it is just my right. Reporter as the president s helicopter arrived, many showed their distaste for his call for more gun control. Obama, go home reporter the white house has indicated the president is considering an executive order that would require more gun retailers to conduct background checks. In spite of the killings here, that remains an unpopular position in this part of oregon. Sally teleford is a gun owner. The Second Amendment says no infringement. That means no infringement. Reporter anybody can have a gun, even somebody with mental problems . Yes, everybody can have a gun to protect themselves. You cant just make us get a background check because somebody might have a mental problem. Reporter the president s motorcade avoided the Largest Group of demonstrators wheres he met privately with families of the victims of last weeks shooting. Were going to have to come together as a country to see how we can prevent these issues from taking place, but today its about the families. Reporter eric dietz is the former husband of shooting victim kim dietz. And he said to you . He said that, when it comes right down to it, theres a lot of different opinions in our country, but really, were a lot more alike than we are different. Reporter the president s visit to roseburg was largely confined to the safe, secure area in the local high school. In spite of suggestions that demonstrators would try to block roads, scott, his motorcade came and went without disruption. Pelley John Blackstone for us in roseburg. John, thank you. Syria was russias only ally in the region, and today, rather than being able to count on their support and maintain the base they had in syria, which theyve had for a long time. Mr. Putin now is devoting his own troops, his own military, just to barely hold together by a thread his sole ally. Hes challenging your leadership, mr. President. No. Reporter hes challenging your leadership. Steve, i got to tell you, if you think that running your economy into the ground and having to send troops in, in order to prop up your only ally is leadership, then weve got a different definition of leadership.
