But 20 years ago one courageous woman believed she had a very good reason to do just that. Martha teichner reports our cover story this morning which includes those images which we caution even now are hard to see. Reporter on sunday august 15, 1993, this was the cover of the New York Times magazine. It was a shock. The glamor layout, the mastectomy scar and the message you cant look away anymore. The reason why i think its startling and shocking is because of the juxtaposition of the beauty and the scar. Reporter artist and former fashion model matu scvment hka. I wanted to bring Breast Cancer out into the open. Reporter she took the photograph of herself. It was the taboo subject in the early 90s. There was no press coverage and there was no visual to go with the subject. Reporter the image was intended to start a National Conversation about Breast Cancer. But judging from the 1500 letters the New York Times received in just the first week after the photo appeared, it was a shouting match. So negative that i was devastated. Now everyone has to know what i look like, i mean, the person who is writing it. Ive hid it from my husband all these year. Now you had to expose it. That was the whole point was to expose it and embrace it and not be ashamed of it. Reporter 20 years later, the shouting continues. In may, Actress Angelina Jolie announced also in the New York Times that she had undergone a preventive double mastectomy and reconstruction. While she was being praised for her courage and candor, mastectomy photographs, part of what is known as the scar project, were removed from facebook. More than 20,000 furious people signed an online petition demanding that facebook backtrack. Within days it did. Sort of. Announcing that the vast majority of mastectomy photos would be permitted but not all. It isnt just about whether the breast is there or not. Its the fact that it is a breast. This is the very first edition. Reporter judy is executive editor of our bodies, ourselves. You have a mastectomy section. Absolutely. Reporter in its ninth printing, it is the now iconic guide to womens sexual and reproductive matters. And a gauge of social attitudes. I think we live in a culture where large breasts are almost universally idealized. Reporter an exaggeration . Watch this. So what happens do you think to people that arent pretty . How do people treat them . Very badly. Reporter an excerpt from the documentary absolutely safe about breast implants. The girls in your class talk about how big their breasts are . Yeah. They do . What do they say about it . They say they want them bigger. Reporter the film maker is interviewing sevenyearolds. They say because then they can show off and stuff. Most of us are getting bombarded with imagery that suggests you need this hour glass figure. You need large breasts. You need to look like what is a very narrow beauty ideal. Reporter so what effects does that have on the decisions women make when theyre diagnosed with Breast Cancer . Not only whether to have a mastectomy but what then . Whether to get Breast Reconstruction and what kind. Weve had at the same time a Huge Industry that has burgeoned to promote the idea that women must have implants that you must look this narrow norm whether its the cosmetics surgeons or the diet industry or whatever. Implant manufacturers. Weve got moneyed interests guiding what we see as beauty ideals for the american public. Reporter here are some facts. More than 230,000 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer this year in the united states. More than 39,000 are expected to die of it. But since 1993, the year of the photograph being published, Breast Cancer death rays have actually dropped 30 . For those women who had mastectomies, between 1998 and 2008, the most recent data, the number who got immediate reconstruction nearly doubled from 20 to nearly 40 . Driven by a 200 increase in implant use. And by this, since 1998, federal law has required that if a Womans Health insurance pays for a mastectomy, it must also pay for reconstruction. Implants are the most popular option. Millions of women are happy with theirs. But there are Health Risks Associated with any reconstruction. Oh, my goodness. Reporter heres another scene from the film absolutely safe. It shows what a silicone implant looks like when it ruptures which eventually many do. Thats unbelievable. I remember how difficult it was to take it, but the results were worth it. Reporter but the need to look and feel whole is a powerful incentive to undergo reconstruction of some kind. The world is never going to really embrace a onebreasted fashionable chick. Theyre just not. Theyre not. I was hired to do a fashion spread for women who have had Breast Cancer. Reporter for more than 20 years, she held out. Her missing breast remained the subject in her art. But as her body changed, so did herself esteem. People are looking at me like im, you know, a freak. Reporter last month at the age of 59 she prepared for the first of several surgeries to reconstruct her right breast and to reduce the size of her left. Just as good as original. If not better. Reporter the doctor is an associate professor at new york universitys school of medicine. More cross raching means more fast will be removed. Reporter she specializes in a stateoftheart surgery that uses liposuction to extract fat. She then injects the fat into the breast area. A new breast created from the womans own tissue. No implants, minimal scarring. Its one step away from what is expected to be the future of reconstruction stem cells. Good morning. How are you . laughing hard question to answer. A little foggy from the drugs. A little bit of pain. Reporter a lot of pain actually. But a day after her surgery was the beginnings of a new breast under the bandaging, she is sent home to heal. This photograph was also about pain and loss. 20 years after she shocked us, she has finally moved on. I wake up and i just. I guess i have to say i feel normal. Elvis and hound dog stayed at number one for what was then a record 11 weeks. Love me tender lee only to be knocked off their perch by elvis himself. His fans certainly loved elvis. More fanatically though than tender. Announcer the tempo is 1, 2, 4 for private presley. Reporter even a twoyear stint in the army failed to dampen the female following. As our own Charles Kuralt noted at this News Conference upon his discharge. Elvis, you have screaming fans out there. Do you still like screaming girls . If it wasnt for them, id have to reup in the army. Ill tell you. Lee elvis released 31 number one hits during his lifetime earning him the nickname the king. His death from a heart attack in 1977 at just 42 shocked his millions of fans. But hardly discouraged them. Elvis impersonators thrive to this day. While deniers of his death keep up a steady drum beat of supposed sightings and his records and movies continue to sell. Last year Forbes Magazine proclaimed him the third highest earning dead celebrity behind only Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson with 55 million in posthumous earnings each year. Yet along with all the fun, there is genuine sadness. This past thursday evening, thousands of fans took part in a candle light vigil at graceland on the 36th anniversary of elvis death. Hard to believe that if elvis really is alive somewhere, hes 78 years old. Love me tender, love me sweet lee curves ahead. Right now, 7 years of music is being streamed. At night in todays life what is missing more than anything is the space once provided by this 1950desoto. It had pretty gracious lines too but even then them didnt build them quite like they used to. There are curves ahead this morning as Mark Strassman is about to show us. Lets face it. Todays cars look pretty much the same. Its a highway of ordinary. You can travel from coast to coast and not spot a single standout in style. Unless. You pull over in nashville. Sweeping fenders, elongated hoods, handcrafted leather interiors. These rare cars from collections across the country are on display in an exhibition called sensuous steel at the frist center in nashville, tennessee. Parked here are sculptures on wheels. Some have familiar names like chrysler and ford. But gear up for carmaking exotica from another era. Pierce arrow. All fashioned in the style of art deco. Ken gross is the guest curator of the exhibition. Smooth but elegantly functional. These are all art deco elements to my way of thinking. Its kind of a grand gesture and Perfect Little details. All these cars epitomize some of that. Reporter art decos lavish design style was conceived in paris in the 1920s and grew into popularity between the world wars. Its main thrust mixed traditional decorative motifs with machine age patterns. The style asserted an image of progress and hope in the grimness of the great depression. Sleep lines, bold shapes, lush ornaments were incorporated into the furniture, architecture and cars. If you look at the grill on the chrysler air flow that we have here, you can see the chrysler building. You can see some of those symmetrical elements. They were done in the same era and thats what theyre all about. In the art deco era designers strove for elegance and luxury for their wealthy clients. Most of these cars were hand crafted. Many of them one of a kind. They sold for hefty prices, but todays sticker shock is their value in the millions. Like this one. 1939 type 57c with a custom body. It was a gift from the government of france to the prince and became the shaw of iran. The windshield can crank down to make it higher or lower if you like it to be particularly racy looking. Reporter this 1938 car was commissioned by the founder of a well known french company. This is the only one ever made. It is. Reporter it has plexiglass side windows and doors that fold out and back. Thats pretty sexy. Reporter so this is the fanciest minivan ever. Back when it was built, the expression minivan of course hadnt been invented so its a sudan. But it has a interior that can be configured in many different ways. Theres a little table in there. Seats can be moved around. It was just too radical. Reporter but not for jim patterson. How many of these classic cars do you own . I dont know the number honestly. Hes an entrepreneur. The founder of the fast food franchise long john silvers and as you can see an avid core collector. We visited the garage patterson built for his beauties in louisville kentucky. Im just into pretty. I like the beauty of the french cars. Reporter this 193 roadster won patterson the prestigious pebble beach best of show in 2010. Are you comfortable to tell me the most youve ever paid for a car . Probably not. laughing probably not. But it has certainly been seven figures but never ten. Weve never gotten into this to make money. You dont do it for that reason. You buy it because you think there is value there. Because you enjoy the experience and you enjoy the possession of it. Reporter we certainly enjoyed taking a spin in one of pattersons rides. A 1937 one. Pretty good first date car. It depends on what youre looking for. Reporter in a car like this, gatsby was right. You cant repeat the past. Lee still to come. The indomitable nick vujicic. But first. Free at last. Free at last. [ cheers and applause ] it took place right here in this designated spot. As i look back now, i can feel a little nervousness inside my body, a little tremor because i certainly do it a lot differently than i did then. 50 years ago george was a 26yearold former College Basketball star. Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of georgia. Reporter . Who was not only one of a quarter Million People to witness dr. Martin luther king jr. s historic speech but as a lastminute volunteer he had a coveted spot near the podium. How far away from dr. King were you standing . I was to the left of dr. King, i would suggest, probably seven or eight security people away. From every mountain side. Reporter just having a front row seat to such a momentous occasion is a memory worth talking about. But georges story really begins with what happened after the speech. Free at last, free at last, thank god all mighty, we are free at last. [ cheers and applause ] reporter so what did you do when he finished . People started to stand. I have no idea why i walked over. He was just folding the paper. And i said, dr. King, can i have copy of the speech . Reporter did he hesitate . He turned and handed it to me. Just as he did a rabbi on the other side came up to congratulate him and it was over. It happened that quick. Reporter thats right. George was handed one of the greatest speeches in American History by Martin Luther king himself. And so this is the actual speech. You can see the date. You can see that it was type writer. Reporter it all happened by chance. The result of a dinner conversation at the home of a friend a few days before the march. At that time, my best friend was a young man named warren wilson. His dad was a very prominent dentist. In wilmington delaware. So i was down visiting them. When dinner was done, we went into the family room to watch the evening news. The news was primarily dominated with this forth coming march. The march will be held on august 28. It will have a twofold purpose. When the Television News ended, dr. Wilson asked us if we were going to go. We said no. He said, i think its really important that you go down and be part of this movement. Reporter so wilson and george made the trip to washington d. C. The night before the march. Got down to the monument grounds. Were Walking Around. And we ran into a gentleman. He asked us if we were come to go the march. We said yes. He said, would you be interested in volunteering . Reporter they said yes. The longawaited march for jobs and freedom on washington d. C. Has started. Reporter when they showed up early the next day, they were assigned to handle security around the podium where celebrities like singer Marian Anderson and sammy davis jr. Would stand. We knew it was important but we didnt know that it was historic. Reporter tens of thousands descended on the mall. Black and white. Rich and famous. Working and middle class. As you looked out, all you could see is a mass of humanity, the reflecting pool. You couldnt even see the grass. All of us should be prepared to take to the streets. Reporter beginning at 9 00 a. M. A steady stream of speakers and singers took to the podium. Finally by late afternoon. Dr. Martin luther king. Reporter . The last speaker was announced. I have a dream. That my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. [ cheers and applause ] reporter the words dr. King spoke that day signaled a turning point in American History. But as for the three pages they were written on, george simply took them away in an autobiography of harry truman and forgot about it. He embarked on a successful career as a basketball coach that took him to washington state, the university of iowa, and u. S. C. For over 20 years i never looked at the speech again. Reporter then one day in 1984, a local newspaper reporter named bob denis interviewed george rafaeling about the significance of being the first africanamerican basketball coach at iowa. He said to me, were you involved in the Civil Rights Movement . I said kind of. He said what do you mean . So i told him the story. He said, you have the speech . Reporter the speech was right where he left it. Tucked in the truman book in his basement. After the article was published with a picture of rafaeling standing next to king the reporter framed the speech as a gift. He actually brought the speech back for us. Reporter the typed document has been in that frame for the last 0 years. Its new home is in a bank vault. It doesnt have title. Reporter the speech looks nonthe worse for wear, but the irony is is that the words i have a dream are nowhere to be found. Its not identified as i have a dream. Youll see that he pretty much followed the script. Five score years ago, a Great American in whose symbolic shadow we stand. Coach, i notice theres an asterisk here on the copy of the speech. Right here is where we now go into the add lib part of the i have a dream speech. I have a dream that one day. Reporter its treu. Those famous words were add lib turning a planned fourminute speech into a 16minute historic address. I have a dream today. Reporter rafaeling says he would be happy to turn the speech over to a museum but he hasnt found the right match. I was contacted by someone who said they represented the king family and that they wantedded to put it on exhibit. I was willing to do that as long as they would sign an agreement that the speech belonged to me. We werent able to work that out. I take on a unique responsibility. Reporter at age 76 rafaeling considers himself the guardian of the speech. He has arranged for his son to inherit the document upon his death. With the condition that it is never to be sold. That speech belongs to america. The speech belongs to black folks. It doesnt belong to me. It would be sacrilegious of me to try to sell it or to profit from it. Reporter even though youve been offered as much as 3. 5 million for that speech, you wont sell it . No. I would like to think somewhere out there my mom and dad and my grandma taught me better than that. Everything in life you cant equate in money. Thank god all mighty we have free at last. Whether its sky diving or surfing the waves off hawaii, nick vujicic has found a way around almost every obstacle. He was born in 1982 in melbourne, australia, to parents boris and dutch. Nicks mom a trained midwife took every precaution during the pregnancy. I didnt even take coffee or tea. I took nothing really just to be safe. And i got nick. Reporter during two separate ultrasounds, her doctor didnt detect any problems at all. Nick was born about 6 35 in the morning. Reporter the day nick was born was far different than any would imagine. When nicholas was born i heard a little cry. The doctor just held the baby down so i wouldnt see it because he was shocked. Everyone was shocked. Dead silence in the room. Basically looking at him and wondering, you know, what the future does this child really have. Hes just going to be there like a, you know, a vegetable. Just sitting there. Reporter there was no medical explanation. Just a name. An exceedingly rare condition. But nick was otherwise healthy. Up until he started going to school, he didnt really understand that he was that different from everybody else. Reporter he learned to adapt riding a skateboard on his stomach, playing ball using his head. When he was six, he was given a stateoftheart pair of prosthetic limbs to help. But he had already adapted so well he learned he was actually better off without them. You didnt feel. It didnt feel right. Reporter but despite everything he did to engineer a life to keep up with everyone else, the curious looks soon turned to bullying. Nearly every day that i would come home weeks straight crying i dont want to go to school. There were some days that i would hide myself in the gardens at school hoping no one would see me. It was very, very difficult. Reporter one day at age 10, the teasing got too much to bear. When nicks dad took him in for his bath, nick asked to be left alone. So he put me in and he shut the door. That was the last time i thought i would ever see my family. And i said, thats it. I cant do it. Im done. Reporter nick slid beneath the water and rolled over. Face down. Couldnt do it. Just physically i could but mentally, it is scary. I saw in my mind my mum and my dad and my brother crying at my grave if i actually went through with it. Reporter he grew into his loss. And he now invites the questions and the stares especially from children and teens. His Foundation Life without limbs is an outreach to help those suffering from their own quiet troubles. Man, this looks great. Reporter we caught up with nick a few hours before a speaking appearance in california. To me speaking engagements its not how many people come. Its about knowing that ive come here for one person at least. Come on. Reporter little did he know as he joked with volunteers before the crowds even arrived that there would indeed be at least one person he would touch. Her name was leah sitting right in the front row who had been diagnosed with c. P. , cerebraal palsy. Whats your name . Leah. Oh, give me a hug. He invited back stage. Lord jesus, i pray for leah and i thank you god. Reporter the meeting lasted just moments but for leah she told us it was better than meeting Justin Bieber. Why was it better than Justin Bieber . Does there have to be a reason . Reporter no, there doesnt. I think you pretty much said it all. And i want you to know that we are never alone. That god loves us. Reporter nick spoke for nearly two hours that night. But he was anxious to get back home to los angeles and for a good reason. He had someone waiting. His wife. They were married in Santa Barbara just before valentines day last year. And he even danced at the reception but thats not the real headline. This is. After we got married we fell pregnant. I remember thinking that it felt like new york was at war. I kind of wished there was a magical race of people who could protect the city. I think that was where i got the first idea of maybe i could create a world in which there were these supernatural protectors. Humanity is on the very brink of extinction. Reporter those supernatural protectors have since allowed claire to upgrade from her walkin closet. I always dreamed about having the perfect library. Reporter she now lives a quiet life in amherst massachusetts with her husband and three cats. No shadow hunters here. Hes not always like am i good or am i bad .
