Security is beefed up nationwide this morning. There have been two suicide bombings in two days in a row. They are now responsible for kiing more than 30 people. Both attacks targeted transportation links in the city of volgograd 400 miles from sochi russia where the Winter Olympics will be held in february. Elizabeth palmer is in london. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The russian government anxious to show its taking bombings seriously has released video of the president and the Prime Minister meeting to discuss the response. Of course its the pictures of the terrorist attacks themselves going to grab the headlines. The first bomb went off in volgograds main Railway Station. The Security Camera caught the moment of the explosion. Witnesses say it was a suicide attack. Then less than 24 hours later, another bomb blew up a volgograd bus. No one has theyve been saying that 15 to 20 years. Everybody remembers the 2002 theater siege in moscow. And the school hostage taking two years later. But the attacks have continued. Mostly in southern russia. Just two months ago, a suicide bomber blew up a volgograd bus in an attack similar to this mornings. An hour plane ride from sochi where the Olympic Games are due to start in over a month. The situation is not under control. Its anyones guess whats going to happen at games themselves. Officials are growing more and more concern. We know russia has had terrorist problems for some time. The region thats produced the threat analysts in the u. S. And around the world are growing more concerned about the ability of russians to control security as we approach the olympics. The russians have been taking Extraordinary Security measures in sochi and around it. Is that leaving the more vulnerable just outside of it . Perhaps. Youve seen terrorists in the past talk about that. There are softer targets outside the site of the olympics where they could target softer regions. Youve seen from leaders the fact they want to bring maximum force and pressure against the russian state and bring instability of a sense of that to the olympics. Normally the United States and Intelligence Community cooperates closely with the host city during the olympics. There are strange relationships between u. S. And russia. How much is that affecting this. When you talk about tactical security around the will olympics areas fall to the short side. U. S. Authorities are work closely to make sure u. S. Athlete, sponsors citizens for the games are provided the maximum security. I think everyone now needs to be even more concerned act the terrorist threat thats reached the russian heart land and growing closer to the sochi olympics and affecting transportation hubs that are so important to the olympics. This attack sunday may have involved a woman, another attack in the same city back in october included a woman that detonated a vest of explosive killing herself and six others. Whats behind this and why are women involved . The leaders are famous for using what is called the black widows. These are often widows of fighters who they themselves become suicide attackers. Weve seen this in the past. In 2004 bringing down two airliners. Ironically one headed to sochi actually. Youve seen that in prior bus attacks two months ago in volgograd. The administration reported more than a Million People now signed up for Health Insurance under healthcare. Gov. Those numbers sound strong, but its still a long way from their goal. The Administration Calls this a welcome surge in enrollment because we met our marks on improving healthcare. Gov. Welcome but only a third of the administrations original projections, 3. 3 million enrolled by the end of the year. That was the number officials seemed confident about a month ago. There you can compare insurance plans side by side same way you shop for a plane ticket or tv on amazon. Upon day one, six enrollments nationwide. By the end of october, 27,000 managed to sign up, 137,000 by the end of november. The white house says things are getting on track. Theres no controversy over last years deadly assault at the consulate in benghazi libya. An investigation finds al qaeda had nothing to do with the attack that killed four americans including the ambassador to libya Chris Stephens. Leaders are criticizing that. Chip reid is in honolulu. The times investigation found the prime suspect in the attack that killed Chris Stephens and three other americans was a local militia leader with no ties to al qaeda. The report says the siege was sparked by an antiislam video that inflamed passions throughout the middle east. According to the new york time many attackers that night were angry over this online video they believed denigrated islam. The paper interviewed witnesses who said they received lectures from the attackers about the evil of the film and virtue of the profit. The u. S. Ambassador to the u. N. Said the video inspired protestors. Though the times also undercut the initial claim the attack was spontaneous tanous. According to the paper, the after tack does not appear to be planned but neither was it spontaneous without warning signs. We had strategic warning benghazi was not a safe place. The report noted the local militia commander who witnesses said directed the fighters is described as having an my american views but no ties to al qaeda. Former cia director hayden says even if groups have no connection to al qaeda, they could have an idealcal connection. The make up shifts as you move westward. A new blizzard has engulfed the Akademic Shokalskiy harvering rescue efforts. The australian scientists and other passengers are keeping their cool amid the freezing conditions even though their rescue might still be hours or even days away. The situation is shifting hour by hour aboard the Akademic Shokalskiy. On saturday scientists saw a glimmer of hope thanks to a crack in the ice. Posting a vine video with the news. That ice is definitely cracking down there. Is there enough to get us out . I hope so. But those hopes were dashed yesterday after another storm came through the area where the Research Vessel had been icebound since christmas eve. Blizzard here. Its a total whiteout. Theres snow blowing everywhere and its cold outside. Two rescue vessels the Aurora Australis and the chinese snow crag dragon are nearby. But theyre having trouble breaking through the ice to free the ship. We reached the lead. Weve got the aurora and the dragon support as well and if its possible well evacuate the ship. The chinese ice breaker sent a helicopter to survey the area for a possible air evacuation. But turnny stresses abandoning ship is a last resort. Weve got very specific scenarios at the moment we just never know with antarctica. If the wind changes direction, it could break up some of this ice. Were also in contact with the u. S. Coast guard and there may be a possibility, that the polar star which is an american ice breaker might actually be heading our way as well. The coast guard tells cbs news that the polar star is in the antarctic but its 12 days away from the Akademic Shokalskiy. Despite being frozen at a standstill the teams research on Climate Change and ant art tick wildlife is moving forward more than a month after the mission started and just five days from when it was originally scheduled to end. Be reassured that all our family and friends, were all well, and were keeping fit. The ships not in any immediate danger. Just know people thinking of us back home and hopefully well see everyone soon. Expedition members say theres currently no chance for an air rescue until these blizzard winds die down. Wow. Quite a predicament there. Thanks so much. This morning doctors say they cant predict the outcome for seventime formula 1 racing champion Michael Schumacher. One of the worlds most famous race car drivers is in a medically induced coma after a skiing accident in the french alps. As Terrell Brown reports, his injuries are now being described as life threatening. Reporter Michael Schumacher was skiing on unmarked slopes sunday morning at a popular resort in france when he fell on the right side of his head. Resort director said schumacher was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and that he was alert when First Responders arrived. He was airlifted for medical care. Doctors say he arrived at the hospital agitated before losing consciousness. He underwent immediate surgery, and is now being kept in a medically induced coma. At todays press conference the doctors said they believe shaw milwaukeer would not be here today had he not been wearing a helmet. The 44yearold is know stranger to injury. In 1999 he broke his leg during a crash and in 2009 he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. He suffered damage to his neck and spine, but managed to make a nearfull recovery. In his years of formula 1 racing schumacher was known for his sometimes reckless behavior on the track. Even with 91 grand prix wins he was a high risk competitor and accusations of dangerous driving followed his career. Still, he is a beloved member of the formula 1 community where fellow racers sending their support and wellwishes from around the world. He retired from the sport officially in 2012. In an interview last month he spoke about what life is like off the raceway. I have arrived in my new life and its very nice. To have so many other pleasureful things to do. So its a good life. And that includes pennsylvania where a pregnant nurse is out of a job this morning. The reason . She refused to get a flu shot. Elaine quijano looks at whether science backs up her concerns. Reporter 29yearold Brianna Brayton has worked as a nurse at Lancaster General Hospital in central pennsylvania since 2008. Earlier this fall her employer required brayton to receive a flu vaccine. I want to look in to anything thats going in to my body. Any pharmaceutical has side effects and we all know that. Reporter brayton the mother of a 19monthold son is flee months pregnant with her second child. She has had two miscarriages in the past year. And worried the flu vaccine could complicate her pregnancy. She offered to wear a mask but refused to taked vaccine. And was subsequently fired. I know im in the minority. And so its frustrating to me to be forced to do something that youre not comfortable. Reporter the American College of obstetricians and gynecologists urges pregnant women to receive a flu vaccine. It advises on its website, flu vaccination is an essential element of prenatal care. No study to date has shown an adverse consequence of flu vaccine in pregnant women, or their offspring. Dr. William shatner is a dr. Of Infectious Disease at vanderbilt university. Not only does the flu shot offer some protection to the pregnant woman, but theres a bonus. You see the pregnant woman can pass some of that prevention in to her newborn baby. Reporter since 1984 the cdc has encouraged Health Care Workers to receive a yearly flu vaccine. But a study from this august showed less than three quarters of all Health Care Workers received the vaccine in 2012. That has led Health Care Providers in several states to require workers to be vaccinated. Braytons former employer Horizon Health Care Services said in a statement, like our requirements for tb testing and mmr vaccination as a condition of employment mandatory flu immunization protects our patients employees, and communities from getting the potentially serious infection.
