This rn mo governments around the world are a plauding the United States and cuba after that diplomatic breakthrough. President obama said wednesday he will restore relations between the two countries. Those ties were cut in january 1961. Scott pelley is in cubas capital and well speak to him in a moment. First Major Garrett is at the white house where the president made the historic announcement. Major, good morning. Reporter good morning. Good morning to our viewers in the west. President obama said it was time a diplomatic and political experiment that dates back to the Eisenhower Administration arguing closer ties would coax cubas communist government toward all manner of reform. The president s critics called him misinformed and naive. We will end an outdated approach that for decades has failed to advance our interests. Reporter the white house negotiates the release of u. S. Aid worker alan gross unjustly jailed in cuba for five years at the same time it worked on normalizing relations with havanas communist government. Pope grab sis set the process in motion urging president obama and cuba president raul castro to resolve the dispute over gross fate and initiate a new phase in relations. The president sealed the deal with castro in an oval Office Phone Call tuesday. Freedom for gross triggered the lifting of certain travel and trade restrictions but only congress can remove all commercial barriers between the u. S. And cuba. Democrat Robert Menendez is the outgoing chairman of the Foreign Relations committee. I think it stinks. I think its wrong. Im deeply disappointed in the president. Reporter former florida senator marco rubio, whos parents fled the cuba revolution, said the white house gave up too much. This president is the single worst negotiator weve had in the white house in my lifetime who has basically given the cuban government everything it asks for and received no assurances of any advances in democracy and freedom in return. Reporter arkansas republican jeff flake among others flew gross back to america, and was rare among republican supporters of the president. The policy weve had in place for the past 50 years has done more in my view in manys view, has done in power than anything we could have done. Reporter republicans who will run Congress Next year have vowed to do everything in their power to block the lifting of a decadesold economic embargo with florida. In south florida, anticastro sentiment has run high and both parties have tried to exploit it. With president obamas move now the policy could be the dividing line for the race to the white house in 2016. All right, major. Thank you. The president s announcement was a surprise, but diplomats have worked for years to bring home gross. Margaret brennans at the state department. Shes on that part of the story. Margaret, good morning. Good morning. Alan gross first words to his two daughters were im free. Hes been in jailed since 2009 and charged with crimes against the cuban state. A mob of wellwishers greeted alan gross just after he landed outside washington, d. C. A devout jew, gross later told reporters he felt blessed. Today is the first day of hanukkah. And i guess so far its the best hanukkah that ill be celebrating for a long time. Reporter imprisoned in 2009 the cuban government charged gross for crime against the cuban state and sentenced him to 15 years. Hed lost 100 pounds, vision in his right eye and five of his front teeth. God bless you and thank you. It was crucial to my survival knowing that i was not forgotten. Reporter after a few false starts over 18 months of talks a final deal was brokered this week. The u. S. Released three members of the spy network known as the cuban five. In exchange the castro regime released an unnamed Cuban National who had served 20 years in jail for working as a u. S. Spy. Alan grosss imprisonment helped pave the way toward a diplomatic opening. President obama announced the first step will be allowing cubanamericans to send more money to families in cuba, and u. S. Credit and debit cards will soon be accepted. Gross told reporters it was about time the two countries made up. 5 1 2 decades of history shows us such belligerence inhibits better judgment. Two wrongs never make a right. Gross was greeted at the airport by john kerry who says he want to be the first secretary of state to visit cuba in 60 years but theres no trip planned yet and it will take time, at least six months to lift those terrorrelated sanctions. The two cubans released at the same time as alan gross were all accused of spying at home. They are considered national heroes. Castro embraced them when they got off the plane in havana. Cbs eefl ning news anchor and managing editor scott pelley is in havana, cubas capital. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Those three cubans returned here to a heros welcome. Cubans watched them on Television Last night greeting their neighbors as the streets around them filled with what appeared to be adoring crowds and they thanked everyone for keeping the faith and bringing them home. The castro brothers had always said this country would never rest until those three cuban spies were returned from the United States. As the sun rises this morning over the island, cubans are waking up to a new reality. Now that the sweeping changes have finally been announced. These negotiations went on for 18 months in secret. When raul castro announced it to his people, at the same time obama spoke in the United States. Nearly everyone was watching. At first, there was silence. But that soon turned to joy. People broke out in song and danced to celebrate the news. Church bells rang and cars and Motor Vehicles honked their horns as they drove through the streets. Although its still far too early for people to feel any sort of impact theres a sense that this can only be a good thing. People here feel that Economic Conditions will improve as trade restrictions loosen and visits by american tourists are made easier. Diplomatic relations between cuba and the United States have been virtually nonexistent since they broke off in 1961. And when you look around a city like this, like havana, the city almost feels frozen in time, but this might change things now that ties have been reestablished. You cant overemphasize what this news means to families here. An entire generation of cubans have watched their children either leave the island or attempt to leave the island and theres a sense here now that if the economy improves and the government opens up more freedoms, families may stay together, people may want to stay here in cuba. Charlie . Scott, thank you so much. President george w. Bush supported the economic embargo on cuba. So did secretary powell. He joins us from washington. Good morning. Good morning. How are you all . All right. Youre a veteran of diplomacy. Do you totally support the steps the president has done, the plans he has made and the deals hes made . Yes, i support it but theres a long road to be traveled. I had a flashback when i heard the announcement yesterday. Flashback in 1962 when i was a infantry captain on my way to vietnam when suddenly i got instructions to go to ft. Hood because we may invade cuba. That didnt happen. Over the years ive watched this policy unfold and ive been a part of it. I think its time to turn the page of history. I dont see anything wrong with opening diplomatic relations with cuba. We have diplomatic relations with other nations. Just as oppressive as cuba. Its a way to talk. Its a way to make your point. Theyre not going to get off the sanctions list any time soon. Congress isnt going to do that. But its good to have an ambassador there who tells cubans, this is what will come if you start to respond in a positive way. And as scott pelley just noted, there is optimism within the cuban people by this change and therefore i think lets start it, lets get the process going, lets not have any illusions. This is still a terrible regime. We dont support their government. We dont like what theyre doing. But i think having diplomatic relations, as weve had with the soviet union, vietnam, so many other place, we can produce positive changes. So you recommend they lift the embargo . No. I recommend they take it under advisement. Monitor what the cubans are doing. If they reach a point where they think sufficient progress has been made, then congress should consider it. This is just the beginning. Were not lifting the sanctions yet and theres a lot of pressure that will remain on the castro brothers and should remain on them until they start to show the kind of positive movement that we want to see. Releasing political prisoners, opening up the economy, making life easier and more open for the cuban people. And so this is just one step and there are a lot of steps that have to be made to make this work. General, can you address the criticism that president obama by taking this action has vindicated the brutal behavior of the cuban government, a castro government that has been so oppressive, a long list of human rights abuses . No, i dont think hes done that at all. Nor is that necessarily the case just because you opened an embassy and started to make some movements. I hope that our government will continue to speak out against that kind of behavior and i hope our ambassador going in makes sure we give that message to them at every opportunity. Were going through the same thing with a lot of other countries. And my experience in all of this is once you Start Talking to someone, youre almost inserting a poison pill into the system where they have to start responding to the pressures that theyre still under. And so i thing this is a positive step and lets not overemphasize all thats going to happen in the months and years ahead. Its a long process, but i think a page of history has been turned and its appropriate to do so at this time. General, i want to turn to the sony hack attack and reports that the north korean government is behind it. What do you make of that and if true, what are the implications of that . Well, i think if it is the koreans, and i understand the government will announce that, the American Government will announce that its a very serious issue. But, you know, this is a problem all of us have to face in this internet age. But if we can identify that the North Koreans did it and if we can be specific as to who did it within north korea, then i think appropriate action has to be taken. I cant tell you what that appropriate action is. Were rather limited in what we can do with north korea that we havent already done. But ill wait and see what the Administration Announces and then well go from there. Secretary powell. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you. A former american hacker who once attacked sony is skeptical. Elaine key quijano sat down with the onetime hacker group anomty. He began cooperating with the fbi after getting caught. For Something Like this to happen it had too happen over a long period of time. You cannot just exfill trait one tear rah bite in that short a time. It would take months or even years to hack 100 tear a bites. Could it have been north korea, do you think . It could be. In my personal opinion it could not. This year they say another berlin wall is starting to fall. Thats a response to the u. S. In cuban restoring diplomatic relations that were severed in 1961. President obama made the historic announcement after 45minute phone call with cuban president raul castro. They agreed on terms for the release of allen gross, the aide contractor who spent five years in a cuban prison. Also released one citizen convicted of spying for the United States. Meanwhile, three cuban agents serving time in america were freed. They returned to a heros welcome in havana. They were part of a spy network known as the cuban five. Cbs news Senior Security contributor is a former cia Deputy Deputy director. What can you tell us about the spy that we only discovered yesterday was in the cuban prison . This was a very important asset of the United States government. He provided Vital Information that led to taking apart cuban spy networks in florida and ultimately resulted in the arrest of eight individuals for spying for cuba. Very very significant intelligence asset for us. What do you think about the Prisoner Exchange in general, michael . Do you think we should be exchanging spies . Absolutely. You know we have a number of individuals around the world who are spying on behalf of the United States, who are committinges spinnage against their own country. When they agree to do that to us gayle, we make a commitment to them that we will be with them forever. On the very rare occasions when one of them gets caught we do everything we can to get that person out of jail and to the United States and we never forget. In this case it was 20 years and we havent forgotten and we brought them out. Very, very important. Mike, as part of this historic change, the United States will now reconsider cubas designation as a state sponsor of terror. When might that happen . How would that change things . Theres a number of steps here norah, that have to happen to reestablish normal relations. Congress will play a big role in that. Part of that will be taking a look at the state sponsor of terrorism designation. In my view cuba has not been involved in terrorism for a very very long time. So an actual looking at the issue should be pretty easy but its probably going to get wrapped up in politics. Michael knowing what you know about nsa and know about espionage, wouldnt we know if the North Koreans were behind this hacking at sony . Dont we have that much technical superiority to identify where its coming from. I have to be careful how i answer that. In general, yes. I can tell you that north korea has significant cyber capabilities. They use them quite frequently. Against south korea. You know for a backward state, that might be a little surprising but they also have a nuclear weapon. So theyre capable of achieving things when they focus on them. Mike, the significance has america lost its first cyber war to north korea . Obviously they succeeded here in doing what they wanted to do which is take this take this movie and put it to the side. So, yeah they won here. But, you know north korea is some day going to change, you know like cuba has changed. Thats going to happen. It cant survive over the long term. Mike, thank you. Youre welcome. Report from havana cuba, tonight on the cbs evening news and you can find coverage on cbsn just go to cbsnews. Com. Russias president says his country will bounce back stronger from the current financial crisis. Reporters from around the world filled the kremlin for putins annual News Conference. Charlie dagata was there. Good morning. A marathon annual News Conference conference, lasting three hours. Putin was mostly defiant but at times relaxed and even joking. When he was asked whether russia was being punished for taking over crimea, he likened it to a russian bear guarding its territory. Translator the bear who guards his forest. You know, the thing is if we go on with such analogies, sometimes and this thing even comes is that probably our bear should just relax and sit quiet relax and sit quietly and just eat honey instead of hunting animals. Maybe then they will leave in peace but, no they will not. What theyre trying to do is to chai the bear and when they manage to chain the bear they will just take out fangs and claws. My fangs and claws he said hes referring to russias Nuclear Deterrent in the fact that the country is being isolated. When pressed on the economy, the overwhelming subject, he blamed external factors. And he said that sanctions were to blame for 25 to 30 of the problem. Norah . Charlie, thanks. A new Pew Research Poll shows family and friends are looking forward to visiting this season. Cbs news contributor and republican strategist frank luntz brought together parents to talk about the state of the family. I begin with a simple question. Is it easier or heard today to raise your children than it was for your parents raising you . Who thivs it easier . Who thinks it harder . Everybody thinks its much harder. What is it . Ipads tvs, cell phones. Isnt technology a good thing . Its good for the most part but not in the hands of children. Theres no guidelines. Whats that . They can go as far as they want whenever they want. Nobodys putting a lid on it. Its 3 00 in the morning. Stop, get off the ipad. Isnt it your job . They dont do it. The technological process inkster fears with the educational process and family life. My daughter wants to do this this, this and nothing with me me, me. It irritates me that her Facebook Page is more important im not kidding. Its more important. Her twitter account is more important than family life. I dont let my kids do any of that. That is part of the problem. I make my children very shy. I make them interact with people. I think its hard to battle a Narcissistic Society thats teaching my child to thing about themselves and no one else. Is every parent a role model . Not every parent. I am. I cant speak for anybody else. I make it the point to be the best. Does your child appreciate it . She does. She doesnt have no choice. What values do you want to teach your kids if your parents what do you want your children to know and how do you want them to behave. To be accountable for their actions. There are good ones and bad ones. To teach your kids personal responsibility. Selfcontrol. Are there any Single Parents here . Weve got three of them. How hard is it for you when are you raising your child . Yeah. How hard sit for you to raise your child without a mom . I mean its pretty hard because you have to i mean a fathers one thing. But you do have to have certain types of sensibility because shes of the opposite sex. Have to have certain types of sensibilities there. What are the unique of being the mother and the father . Trying to be both parents. Im a Firm Believer i was raised by a single dad. Even to this day not having my mom i stel feel like i missed out on something they needed so that gives me the want to do much better as a parent so i try my best to be both parents although i cant because i do believe children need both parents. Weve kind of lost touch knowing gender roles. Womens liberation im for it. I think its great but there are certain things a woman needs to learn from a woman and men to learn from a men. Especially our community we need a man to raise our son. A woman cannot do it. Theres a love from both parents. Hes telling me why is this so emotional . In our community, weve just been ransacked. What is a black community . First of all were one america. A black americas problem is americas problem. Thats my Biggest Issue with this whole conversation number one. Number two, we do need to work on building families as a whole. Do any of you having trouble in a typical day making it through from morning to night . Is that difficult for anyone . Sure, yes. Its exhausting. What is it . Its exhausting between work and trying to do homework with the kids at the end of the day, especially if you have a job thain involves travel. You feel like youre always catching up. I feel like im working, working, working to death and i dont have much to show for it. Do you think your children will have a better quality of life than you or worse off . Better. Better. Worse. How many think better. And how many of you think worse . Worse. So youre split. Whoo do you think it will be better. Because technology is moving the knowledge is there so they can obtain everything they want. Its achievable. Right there in their face wchl that being said, you can do anything nowadays. And who thinks it will be worse . I think homeownership is going to be out of the question for most of the kids in this room. Taxation, the decline of the government, the way its heading. We used to be an exceptional country. We have american leaders who dont believe in an exceptional country. History says we have a long road to gohoe and were going to do it. Were going to do it together. All the parents seemed to agree Technology Makes it hard. I think parents are the boss. Take away the technology. You cant have your twitter, facebook and ipad. Go ahead and try do it. Im sitting in the green room for the last 45 minutes and everyone who comes in here said the same thing. When i was a child, when i was a child and they all talked about how different they were raised. This is 2014. It igs not 1980 anymore. And so our kids have different expectations and different demands and parents are having a touch time and what i tell you is the role of technology for parents allows them to be more connected to their children but it allows their children to be less connected to their parents and thats what the frustration is. Its the anxiety. Its fear. They dont know what world their children are living in and unfortunately theyre not willing to fight to be part of that technological world. How should they fight . As gayle says if not take away the technology then participate in it engage in it. Know what theyre experiencing online. Its more than that. That gentleman who said they all agreed. The idea that dhar children find technology to be more powerful and more real than real life. The idea that you can be Something Different on the web than you are facetoface kids dont know how to communicate anymore. They dont know how to talk. They dont look you straight in the eye. They say um and like and dont know how to communicate. Our parents have to have these conversations with their children. The most important advice i give them is that you come to the dinner table, you turn off the tv, you turn off the radio, and you come prepared with it with your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. Chris rock is known for his standup and comedic rules in some of hollywoods funniest movies. This month hell release a movie he wrote, direct and started in. Its received critical acclaim and i was pleased to play a role in it myself. Heres what theyre saying about your movie. For the first time he has made a movie thats as good as his standup. Does that resonate with you . That was the desired effect. Whats up. This is andre allen. Oh my god wheres my kiss. Do we have to do it on camera . It doesnt exist. In 2005 Time Magazine voted this man the funniest man in america. I dont feel like doing a funny movie anymore. Dont feel funny. I wanted to do a movie kind of in some ways about black fame because being famous as a black guy is a little different than being famous as a white guy. Tom hanks is an amazing actor. Denzel washington is a god to his people. Okay . Denzel washington has a responsibility to his people that tom cruise and you know liam neeson and all these guys dont have. They just make their art and no one no one goes hey, tom cruise stay white. Dont forget your whiteness. Come back and visit white people. Hell, what you doing for white people tom cruise . Nobody says that to tom cruise. Salon, what you doing for italians, man, what are you doing for italians. Like no one says that. What do they say to denzel . They want to know that denzel loves his people that denzel is doing stuff for your his people and they feel denzels highs and lows more than tom cruise, theres going to be another white movie next week. If denzel does a bad black movie, i might not see a good black movie for a year. Im really left out here hanging. Did you feel that yourself when you were in that room writing . A little bit. A little bit. Didnt you make this movie without studio backing . No studio backing. I got the money from barry diller. Right. Barry diller came up with the moan. You go to toronto. I go to toronto. With the movie, no distributor. The crazy thing was, we went to toronto. Theres all these pamphlets and booksing things to look for in toronto. Were on nothing, no list. No list to the point wherever i went in toronto people were going, what are you doing here . What are you going to see . How about my movie. How about top five . What are you doing here, mr. Grownups . Didnt you make booty chang. What are you doing at the toronto film festival. Im like i made a movie. My movie is jay, scar face and then i might let biggy in. My biggest is cool j. Well put on a show. You said an interesting thing. You said i want to make a chris rock movie. You would sit with adam sandler and see what he was doing. He was making an adam sandler movie. He was really making an adam sandler movie. Men dress like we always get our fashion sense from whatever friend gets laid the most. I guess ill get those shoes. Okay that hair cut seems to work for him. Ill get that haircut. So sandlers like my biggest movie star friend. Im like, okay, ill just do what hes doing. But it didnt kind of fit me, you know what i mean . Like i had to it fits when im in a movie with him but it didnt fit me to make a movie of the same tone as him or even an eddie murphy movie. That wasnt my tone. And this movie the important thing was i found a tone that works for me. Everybody has said to me its harder for a serious actor to be funny and that it is for a comedic actor to be serious. I saw gone girl the other day. Its amazing, right . Its amazing. But if you took adam mckay who directed anchorman and you let him direct gone girl, right and take dank fincher and have him direct anchorman, whos going to get closer to the finished product . Adam mckay is going to do it. Not as good as fincher. But youll get from a to b. Finchers anchorman is going to suck. He cant do comedy. Im just saying. Odds are come on fincher. Im here. I love social network. Standup will always be at the core of your life . Yes. Standup will always be at the core of my life. Why is that . I like it. I really like it. I really love it. Map we lie all the time. We lie all the time. You know what a mans lie is like . I was at tonys house. Kennys house. A womans lie is like its your baby. You want people who are africanamericans who are in the audience to populate the audience when you do the hbo specials because why . Heres the thing. When i do an hbo special and this is why i do it. Kind of insist on an all black audience. Yes . Because sometimes i do things that are critical of black culture or critical of my people as a whole, and when you do jokes like that its important to cut to a black face laughing to signal that this is not racist because black people can be racist against their own people too. Guess what . Black people laugh better than white peel. Theyre better laffers. Black people laugh with their feet. When you hear black people laugh and you hear you know what i mean . When black people are really in into it . Its the mouth and belly and feet where white people laugh from the neck up. All my black friends have a bunch of white friends and all my white friends have one black friend. Seinfeld says you can do race better than anybody else because you can approach it better to get to the truth of the race in america than most. Maybe. Im from im from that era. I was bussed to school in 1973. Thing of it this way. The bridge has been the robert f. Kennedy bridge for 20 years. We still call it the try barrel bridge. So when you pass a law it takes like 20 years even though its illegal to do certain things it takes 20, 30 years for people to get acclimated to things. I got bussed to school. I was called nigger all the time, you know by students, teachers janitors so i know it. Like i really, really, really really know it. There aint a white man in this room that would changes with me. None of you. None of you would change places with me, and im rich. Whats interesting, louie c. K. Told me once it takes about 15 years to get really really good. You were really really good pretty early, werent you . I was not really really, but good. I was good, you know a club level of good pretty early. But, yeah it did taken 15 years for me to become you know a guy good enough to get on a charlie rose show, you know. I made money. Or to get to be in your movie for gods sakes. Or to get charlie rose in my movie. You know how good i had to be to get that . It does taken 15 years. You have to hit the highs and lows. And you have to have really lived. You have to have really lived for the audience to take that journey with you. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks for doing my movie. Its a pressure. Its our movie. Were always going to have this. Were always going to have this. Hes so smart and so funny. Actually you opened that movie, the crick ross movie. When i went to the premiere, norah norah, i was taking pictures. Some who shawl remain nameless chris licht said it was annoying. I wanted to capture that moment. Yeah, it was a moment. Hes so smart and so funny. Absolutely. And he achieves in his movie what i mentioned there. Hes as good and directing and acting in a standup which says a lot. And Rosario Dawson is great in the movie too. Very well done. Its in the theaters. Top five is in the theaters. An American Girl has a dream come true when she meets the pope. Im excited and a little bit nervous just because its like the pope. A good catholic she prayed for strength. Then along came make a wish the foundation that grants kids like gracie their fondest desire, which is how she found herself in a hotel in rome all dressed up to meet pope francis.
