Trek with wounded veterans. All that and much more on cbs this Morning Saturday, december 14th, 2013. Captioning funded by cbs and welcome to the weekend. We also have some distinguished visitors here in studio 57 this morning fresh off his two grammy nominations. Gregory porter is here to perform. His voice is compared to greats like lou rawls and marvin gaye. Plus chef martin lever inton who got a psychology degree but followed his heart to the kitchen as a very funny chef. And to talk about his generation and mine the baby boomers, the biggest if not the best ever. Sadly we begin yet again with the investigation of a school ashooting attack. Arapahoe high school in centennial, colorado, is not all that far from columbine high scene of a massacre in 1999. Its also not far from last years shoot at a theater in aurora, colorado. Barry petersen is with us this morning. Good morning, barry. Reporter good morning. This is going to be the day to figure out what went on inside the school and authorities promise they will go carefully and slowly in their hunt for answers. The scene was sadly familiar. Students fleeing their school with hands in the air so they could be checked by police to make sure they were not armed and were not part of the shooting. Officials say student karl hello veryson pierson walked in at 12 33, openly carrying a shotgun. He was apparently hunting one particular teacher, said Arapahoe County sheriff greyson robinson. Our initial investigation is causing us to believe that this shooting was the result of revenge on the part of the shooter because of a confrontation or a disagreement between the shooter and the teacher. Reporter the teacher heard he was being targeted and left apparently trying to draw the shooter out of the school. The shooter opened fire and critically wounded one student. Students like Peter Strauss who heard the shots took cover as the school went into lockdown. Reporter what did the students in your classroom with their cell phone and texting. They made sure their parents knew what was going on and texted them and said they loved them. None of them called because they wanted to be quiet. Reporter did you text your mom . Yeah. Reporter what did you say . Told her that i loved her. Reporter it took minutes to find that karl pierson killed himself. He was a bright student and a gifted debater from a religious family that attends bible study sessions. The mystery is why he did this. It takes very little to cause someone to do something as outrageous as happened at Arapahoe High School today. Reporter the sheriff says that pierson also had two molotov cocktails. One went off causing smoke and confusion. Police found the other one and disarmed it. Anthony and vinita . Thank you. Today marks one year since the Sandy Hook School shooting that took 26 lives. An verse that the community has asked to keep private. The president and the first lady will mark the day with a moment of silence at the white house. Reporter on thursday at the National Cathedral in washington, a vigil and remembrance ceremony was held for victims of gun violence, but in newtown itself there will be no ceremony. The community decided against a public commemoration today and respectfully asked the media to stay away. Please respect our need to be alone and to be quiet and have that personal time to continue on our journey of grief in a way that serves us. We were hurt very badly last year, as you all know. We dont need to be reminded. We dont need to relive it. Reporter instead of a vigil, the families have asked the residents of newtown to mark the day by placing candles in their windows. Each candle symbolizeing the commitment to turn the loss and violence into kindness to one another. The community has also created a website, my sandy hook family. There people can read about the victims, post remembrances and donate to charities affected. One of those charities is the sandy ground project, an organization committed to building 26 playgrounds dedicated to each of the children killed in the newtown shootings. The 15th playground opened just this week on what would have been josephine gays eighth birthday. She would have loved it. A playground on the beach. What could be better. Reporter another construction project is about to begin, a new school for the students of sandy hook elementary. It will be built on the same site as the Previous School which the town voted to demolish after the tragedy. Its expected to open in 2016. And for more on sandy hook one year later, go to remembering sandy hook at c b scbs this morningcbsthismorning. Com cbsthismorning. Com. Snow is expected to come mid morning. Theyre expecting a third storm to hit the area this week. Drivers are topping off their tanks and loading up on rock salt and other supplies. A kansas man is in federal custody this morning accused of plotting to bomb a wichita airport, a plot he thought was supported by al qaeda. Jeff pegues is in washington with more on that. Good morning. Good morning, anthony. He faces life in federal prison if convicted. Investigators say the 58yearold was taken into custody as he tried to drive away in what he believed was a van loaded with bombs. The bomb was a fake and they were not al qaeda operatives. They were undercover fbi employees who had infiltrated the alleged plot. It was since early summer of 2013. He made statements that he was resolved to commit an act of violent jihad against the United States. Some of those statements appeared in court documents. In one exchange he wrote brothers like Osama Bin Laden and Anwar Al Awlaki have become great inspirations to me. Prosecutors say he took various steps to study his plot. He studied the layout and Access Points and researched flight schedules to see when it would be the busiest. He said my greatest fear would be not being able to care out the carry out the operation because i was set up. Just days before his arrest he left this letter for his family. By the time you read this, i will, if everything went as planned, have been murdered in the path of fal la. In past operations like this one the fbi has been criticized for aiding a wouldbe terrorist with little actual ability. Anthony and vinita . Jeff pegues in washington. Thanks, jeff. New details are emerging about a former iowa contractor who vanished in iran six years ago reportedly on an up sanctioned spy mission. The Obama Administration is under pressure to find Robert Levinson and bring him home. Cbs correspondent john miller was an assistant with the fbi when levinson disappeared. What a muddy case this has become, john. It has. This fact that he was working under contract for the cia is something that the u. S. Government, that the fbi, that the lever inson family was desperate to keep out of the press from the beginning of this case, but at this point, think the family is taking a different tact on this. I mean i think by now, their point of view is this guy was on working for the United States overseas and this is just not a top priority. Hes been gone seven years we know theres great people in the state department who thing about this and care about this, the same in the fbi, the same in the agency, but this is not this is not at the top of heap of things that theyre bringing with iran especially at a time when they have a new dialogue. So i think at this point the family has changed their tact on that to say, hey, this is our guy, what are we doing . The cia reportedly paid the family 2. 5 million to keep quiet, john. So does this change that . I think that the ciacia paid the family 2. 5 million along the lines of he was working for us hes being held and you are a bread winner and that may be our fault. It was interesting to me that initially they were denying this until the emails came forward. What work was he doing in iran . That is part of being bob levinson. Bob levinson is a very interesting guy. He was an incredibly talented fbi agent. He specialized in organized crime on the five families in new york city and then moved on to the russianyuussian mob and then retired and worked for private companies, private entities. One of them being the cia. He would go to different place, expert in Money Laundering expert in interviewing people and eliciting information. One of the things that the cia liked about him is he came up with different products when he tasked research for another country. He had a lot of things going. Part of what he was doing in dubai was being involved in counterfeit networks and cigarette rings. The trip to iran was different. What is the next step in trying to get him home . I think this disclosure jumpstarts that. There are two things. For the u. S. It makes them uncomfortable. He was under contract for the cia. For iran they say they never had them. They can go from a narrative where we kidnapped an innocent businessman to hey, we caught a spy which means the calculus there becomes who does america have under arrest and in jail that we kwamt and now you get into the conversation of doing a straight trade. We should mention three analysts were fired over this and it changed a little bit of the protocol also. It didnt so much change the protocol as they were fired for not going by the exists protocol. And after that they really took the hammer down on tightening those rules that already existed. But the basic of that vinita was the Analysis Division does analysis and they contract people for research to feed into analysis. The Operations Division of the cia runs operations and that means case officers in the field recruit agents nchl this case the Analysis Division was using a researchers as an agent and he got jammed up and they got stuck with that so three people were fired over the case. John miller thanks for joining us this morning. Thanks for having me. In south africa today the remains of Nelson Mandela begins a journey home. Allen pizzey is liven there there. Allen, good morning. Reporter good morning, anthony. The plane is carried the body. The flagdraped coffin came out the back of the plane in full military honors. It will be placed in a hearse and driven around the town making two stops so people can pay their last respects and then they will make their way down a highway thats been closed off down here to qunu. A lot of people have been lining that route so they can say their final farewell. It will go to mandelas traditional the house he built, the house he loved the most. You may be able to see it behind me amongst the tents. Theres a screen so people who cant fit into the large dome where the funeral will be held can watch it. The journey began very early this morning at an aur base this morning where they made a very long speech detailing the history of the African Congress which were the ones who fought against the apartheid. Zuma has been accused of turning this into a Political Party type of event. There were huge crowds. You can see Nelson Mandelas widow graca machel openly weeping and his exwife winnie. Because its an interesting combination of state funeral, military honors and traditional. Each time his body is moved, clan elders go beside the coffin and grow an aromatic herb thats associated with cleansing and they talk to mandelas body as if hes sleeping. Theyre speaking to his spirit and explain whats going on next. Even if that doesnt happen he was baptized a methodist, hes still the cause, a man of the people, over 7 million. His spirit has to know where its going or it will not rest at peeft with his ancestors. All of that is long and a very detailed process. Very, very interesting and very very moving. Anthony . Allen pizzey. Thank you. Tomorrow on face the nation, Bob Schieffer will have a final look at his life legacy and the historic importance of Nelson Mandela. Hell also discuss the budget deal with john mccain and Richard Durbin a democrat of illinois. Theres a lot going on in space this weekend including chinas first attempt to land a robot explorer on the moon. A startling discovery on one of saturns moon and a possible spacewalk at the International Space system to fix the cooling system. Lets start with the space station. How serious is the problem . Its not sirous. Keep in mind youve got six paem living in a confined space with a lot of equipment running. Its going go get warm in there. You need cooling loops to take care of thafrmt they have cooping loop a and cooling loop b. Cooling loop a has broken down and theyre running on cooling loop b. Its happened five times in the last seven years. Its something they expect. It sounds like it took three spacewalks to install it. Thats right. Is that whats going to happen . It could be. Theyre trying for a software fix which is always a great idea because theres great risk of going outside. Better to stay indoors in space. If you set it on the football field, it would be as large as a football field, so its a mavis hung of hardware and the assumption was every now and then youre going to need people to go outside and look under the hood. The second story, and this really fascinates me chinas first lunar propose scheduled to land on the moon this weekend. Why is that . China thats the big dog. The reason theyre the big dog is they chose to go to the moon. That was a word president kennedy used when they said well go to the moon. This is their Third Lunar Mission and this is going to be a probe which is really when you get to get down and play in the lunar moon. The other thing is the images. Theyre beautiful. Theyre beautiful and they tell a very beautiful story. Its filled with hydrocarbons, all the goodies you need to make life and there are legs on the surface of titan, particularly on the north pole. Theyre not filled with water but methane and ethane. They show what the earth would have looked like if we had put it in the freezer right behalf life emerged. The news from europa the moon over europa has a water ocean gurgling it. Its salty, almost amniotic. What the Hubble Space Telescope just found was a geyser coming out of the moon 100 miles into the sky. Just a magnificent image in a magnificent world. Speaking of magnificent, the meteor shower. What makes it so . Its ghorjs. Its eye candy. We get this hail of particles every year. We know that its coming. We know when its going to half. Its nice to know we have something to show for it. Always fascinating. Jeffrey, thank you. Its time to show you some of this mornings headlines. The New York Times says Cantor Fitzgerald has reached a property settlement. The amount not disclosed. 658 of its employees were killed when an mernl Airlines Plane struck the canter fitzgerald at the top of the building. The idea of losing your freedom is a terrible terrible thought. How did you cope . What did you miss the most . I just missed knowing that i had all these opportunities that were gone, you know. My whole 20s were gone and i coped by learning and educating myself every day. You know aaron, we saw ryan when he came out after he had been released when we did that story with you. He said, you know its easy to get wrongly convicted but it takes an army to overturn it. Dr. Jon lapook and dr. Holly phillips. Therell be a major change in our food supply. Beef, pork and poultry farmers will have to phase out antibiotics in the animals they raise. Jon . Its become a Major Public Health threat ffrmt decades, farmers have added antibiotics to animal feed to stimulate growth in poultry, cattle, and pig, but the antibiotics have been overused and bacteria in the animals have become resistant to the drugs. Eventually these resistant bacteria have come into contact with humans. The man dade would eliminate overthecounter use for boosting growth in healthy animals. Antibiotics can only be used to treat or prevent disease and be prescribed by a veterinarian. One Advocacy Group says 80 is used in all animals. Dr. Schaffner. A few of theer antibiotics we use, the better for us. Doctors are having a harder and harder time treating patients with important infections. He brings up a good question. How many people are affected by these resistant infections jon . Its a huge number. More than 2 million americans have infections and many die. They say its going to start out voluntary. The reason for that its quicker. They can get it going more quickly. But theyre going to take another look in three years. Depending how many people are on board, thiel have to reassess. Trans fats and cal lors on menus has made news again. Its been voted to make flu shots mandatory for all children under the age of 5 in Public Schools and day care facilities. Holly, tell us about these new regulations. Really this is the department of health responding to just incredible numbers. 40 of children in new york city between the age of 6 months and 5 years old get the flu every season, especially if theyre in this setting. Nursery school day care. And four kids died last year in new york city. So theyre really reeling from these numbers. The push is to get more people vaccinate and to recognize also that kids are the first vector of flu in the community. They tend to get it earlier and get it in large numbers and pass it to the rest of the population. So you can really cut down just by targeting those kids. As a mom, i feel divided on this. I obviously see the benefits but i always think, shouldnt this be the choice of the parents. It is a sensitive topic, but its not the first vaccine thats required. Certainly we are required to give our kids measles, mumps, tetanus, and other things. This is one that can make a really big difference in just a short amount of time. We will be required to give it every year but the other thing is to really point out that the flu is not like the common cold. Theres this misconception you get sick for a while and get better. It can cause huge complications in kids. High fevers secondary pneumonias. The shot should really protect our kids. In london this week Health Officials from the g8 summit held a session. Next year 2014 is being called the year of the boomer because the youngest baby boomers born in 1964 turn the zbik 50. Aarp the magazine marks the occasion by writing about how it shapes america. P. J. Orourke thanks for being here. Born peak year 1947. Proud of it. Nothing i can do about it. How would you describe the baby boom generation . Selfabsorbed is the key thing but also sort of optimistic and happy and you know, positive. We grew up in the spirit of incredible Economic Growth in the United States very stable period we had duo parents, you know. We didnt always like them but we had two of them. We came out of that thinking the world was great. In the article you gave a great frame of comparison. You said its all in the family versus modern family. How is your generation different than the generations that came after . Well, when you look at modern family, what you see is an older guy kind of confused about the changes in the world and kind of happily shrugging it off with this young babe of a wife and a new kid and all that stuff. When grow back and look at the comparison show with carol connor from all of the family. What you see is a guy of the same age angry, really ticked and constantly the butt of the jokes for all of his prejudices and his preconceptions and so on. We dont see that anymore. Theres 76 million boomers. Its interesting because this generation spent 18 years. Bill clinton, spielberg were born in 46. Michelle obama and Sandra Bullock born in 64. Cher is a baby boomer. Cher to michelle obama, thats quite a span. Can you lump them all together . No, you cant. Of course, i had to because im writing a funny book. But it was interesting to me is leak the first group, my group, you know we were right on the edge, and but we were also closely tethered to the greatest generation. Were right there. So we end up getting kind of were at the bow and the stern, kind of keyholed. If we wind up as Investment Advisers with a nose ring trying to start a tea party chapter, youve got to forgive us. Hillary clinton belongs to that age group. Say no more. The next group, the younger siblings. A little whackier. They walked without shoes. They eventually found their shoes when they got to silicon valley. Never did find their neckties. Thats bill gates and thats steve jobs. Then you have like what i call the sophomore baby boomers and theyre the ones going yeah, yeah, i love the sex, drugs, and rock and roll but what works in general doesnt always work when the bong sets fire to the bean bag chair, so they wrote the preppy handbook. That was kind of the reaction there. And then there were the freshman baby boomer which would be president obama, and theyre kind of ons willblivious to all this. They were like the sea they fished in. Reverend wright. Reverend wright saying these Amazing Things giving these sermons. President obama, if you remember when he was a candidate, caught a lot of flak for this but he wasnt even noticing reverend wright. Baby boomers of my generation were o on the pews with clenched fists, going over to chicago and breaking windows. Next set of baby boomers were looking for nods and free lunches. Third set of babe boomer cia, i dont know. President obama, hes back there in the back pew texting rahm emanuel. Doesnt notice any of this. Wonderful world. Well, it really is a fascinating topic. P. J. Rourke thanks so much for joining us. Thank you for having me here. Coming up colorful classic comedy. Hey. Isnt this a dandy . Oh, boy. Thats a beauty, fred. Oh, fred thats better than the first one. And the best thing of it is because its getting so late, the guy let me have it for half a buck. Its just been proven to fred once and for all, there is a santa claus. Youre not seeing things. Thats the richar goes and mertzs for a colorful special. This is cbs this Morning Saturday. Is green so hard . Is green illusive . I think your show is so great but i wanted to interview carrie. I want to say, carrie why were you dumping all your pills into the toilet . Right, right, right. Do you do that with carrie yourself playing her, do you think, why would you do this . Do you question the writing on this . Sometimes. Im always monitoring the condition of her depiction of her condition. I never want her buy polarity to be a convenient gimmick and its kind of fun to see crazy carrie and i want to treat it with more respect. The attorney general is ready to honor our agreement but as we discussed there are a few things we need to do first. Resign from congress . For starters. What do you think when you heard that president obama said its one of his a first shows . Its wild. Im amazed by the success of the show and obviously grateful for it. But, you know ive never done this before. I never have done a series. So this is really novel for me to have an extended relationship with a character. When you were first approached about playing the role of carrie mathisen you said it scares you. Hmm. You still scared . Yeah, because im still interested. Yes you did. Yes you did. No i didnt. No i didnt. Yes you did. Yes you did. No i didnt. No i didnt. Yes you did. Did not. [ male announcer ] find some peace this holiday. So yes, those specials have holiday and sent men. You chose an episode from the big bang thee. Penny gives a special gift to sheldon, an autographed napkin. Lets take a look at this. To sheldon. Live long and pros ter, perrosper Leonard Nimoy. Yeah. He came into the restaurant. Sorry the napkins dirty. He wiped his mouth with it. I possess the dna of Leonard Nimoy . I just love that. Its like watching the grinchs heart grow three sizes. Actually that episode made me cry when i first saw it. It was so full of joy and the rest of the episode of him trying to remaypay her, this idea of generosity is so unknown to him is. Its a classic show. Its going hit one out of the park. What have we got here . A little bit of fall in new england. Shaved Brussel Sprouts and carrots. And duck with pureed lemon. I love duck. Tell us what you have here . My favored beer. Ipl. Indian Indian Indian pale lager. Ive never seen duck and beer paired together its great for so many things. Cooking was not where you started out. No. What were you studying . I was studying psychology. You were studying something else, too, werent you . I took time off from college and was working on Database Management systems. Where did the fork in the road come from . I couldnt sit still. The one thing about cooking, theres not just the physical element but the learning curve is straight up. I thought it was darling that you would cook for people in the dorm on a single burner, multicourse meals. Yeah. How did you do that . Its a lot of juggling and some of it was successful, some of it wasnt but it was better than eating in the cafeteria. Did your mother have a role in starting you down that road . Yes and no. Yeah . My cooking is very different from my moms. Right. But i was very fortunate to be exposed to the idea you can manipulate flavor and texture and theres a whole process to it. Youre really dedicated to food, Food Sustainability and i think its interesting you said cheap food is killing america. Yes. What do you mean by that . As weve gotten our modern food system weve got a lot of cheap food which is great, but were less healthy than we used to be the more we get way from the actual farm. You referenced even Health Insurance bills. Everything is going up as americans are spending less basically on the food that they bring to their table. Right. And so the idea that perhaps if we spent a little bit more raising our animals properly, raising our produce properly there might be a little more inherent nutrition. I mean the issue is also trying to bring costs down for people as well because a lot of times thats expensive. So how do you do that . I think that the you know we need to look as i said the true cost of food is the issue, so whether its the environmental were destroying the health costs of eating poorly we need to sort of look at how we reverse the equation. Yes, good food is going to necessarily cost a bit more but it should be cheaper in the long run. I want to ask you about the food truck. You went from a really fancy restaurant to another and then to the food truck. Whats the difference in terms of customers especially . Were certainly reaching a different market. But ideally essentiallywhat we do across all of our projects is basically the same idea trying to bring good healthy, simple really tasty food to market. Whats the secret in opening, whether its a truck or a restaurant, i mean whats its so competitive out there now. Yeah. I think you have to come to work every day trying to be it ber than you were yesterday. All right. As we enjoy this beautiful meal we want to ask you if you could pick anyone dead or alive to share this meal with, who would it be . Who would it be . Thats an incredibly tough thing. You know for me food is id want a big group of people. Food is one thing that brings people all together create as conversation, no matter who youve got at the table, so i couldnt honestly answer the question, but i want it to be a big group. Your dorm roommates were very lucky. I want to hand this dish over to you to sign. Thank you so much chef leviton. For more, head to our website cbsthismorning. Com.
