This time Neiman Marcus says theyre notifying customers that an untold number of shoppers may have had their credit card information compromised as far back as middecember. In a statement the company says we have begun to contain the intrusion and have taken significant steps to further enhance security. Target also announces its data breach was worse than previously thought. As many as 7 million customers may have been affected. For more on it. We turn to bloombergs dierdra bolden. Good morning. Good morning. First, Neiman Marcus how are tla going to deal with it . Theyre going to take a page from target. A lot more people are affected than target originally thought. What theyre offering, target, is basically free credit checks. You have equifax. Theres a lot out there. Theyre basically offering that to their customers for a month. More than likely Neiman Marcus is going to do the same thing. From a pr perspective, thats the right thing. Whenever we do business in the store, all you want to know is my data secure. You want to buy your things. You dont want to worry that your inform somethings going to be taken and sold. The large issue is more and more or personal data being out there. Theres a tight line between privacy and security. There was a billiondollar acquisition this week. This is an area that is going to grow. It affects ought of us as far as retail plays, consumer play government plays. And as we hear more and more about these breaches were all more tuned in to exactly whats happening with our money. I want to ask you about our jobs report though. In december we had another jobs report. Its interesting to see whos dropping out of the labor force. It was a whacky set of data. You had 74,000 jobs added to the economy. Thats actually the worst monthly gain in two years and then you had the Unemployment Rate come down to 6. 7 . Normally that would be cause for cheering. Thats the lowest since 2008. The catch here is more and more people are just dropping out, giving up looking for word. So theres a pretty scary stat actually in that december data stat which is 62. 8 is the Labor Force Participation rate. Thats the lowest since the 1970s. We know the jobs that will there, jobs that cant be filled by americans but they remain there. They go unfilled but we know they need to be filled. For example engineering in skills and science but theres a skills gap. Do we think its a onemonth blip . Weather has obviously played a role. People were saying this was going to be a blowout jobs number. Well, it sure wasnt. It definitely is not and you question is right. What happens next . What is the fed going to do with this information . The fed has been looking for 200,000 jobs added. We fell short of that in 2013. We fell short of that in 2012. So it seems that a takeaway is on hold. Were seeing a lot of Big Box Store struggles, sears, kmart, family dollar. Is that lending itself to lessening in the Consumer Confidence market . Thats a reflekz of whats happening. If you dont have a job, youre not spending any extra money. Youre going to stay with what you need which is essentially food clothing shelter. Youre not going to spend more. We were speaking a little bit about this 1. 3 million americans who lost their unemployment benefits. This is on d. C. This is one of their talking points right now. Theyre talking whether to skpeb the benefit bus in the meantime thats 1. 3 who the h1n1 strain which caused an epidemic four years ago. Reporter these tents in front of san joses Regional Medical center are usually set up for disasters. Now hospital staff are preparing them for a surge of patients suffering from the flu. Were using them to kind of isolate those patients from the other pay ends. Californias flu season is off to an aggressive and deadly start. Its blamed for seven deaths. Health officials are investigating 28 more that are possibly flurelated. Brooke brought her two children to the hospital. They have fever, cough, infection. She fears they have the flu. This flu outbreak stretches across the country. According to the centers for disease control, california is one of 35 states with widespread influenza activity. 12 additional states are battling regional levels of flu. The predominant virus is the h1n1 strain last seen in the 2009 2010 season. Known as swine flu, it killed at least 150,000 people worldwide. It hits kids and young adults the hardest, a group usually at lower risk. There was a bit of a panic surrounding h1n1 last time around. Is that panic justified . I think people underestimate what flu can do to you. They feel sick they feel rotten and some die. It can be a very devastating disease. Republicans meanwhile continue to criticize the health care act, charging that personal information may be at risk. They led a bipartisan effort friday that the administration notify consumers if their information has been compromised on the health care exchange. House Speaker John Boehner praised the passage of the bill in a statement friday saying quote, americans have a right to know if the president S Health Care law has put their personal information at risk and todays bipartisan vote reflects that concern. The white house opposes the concern saying the website already meets the strictest of standards. When consumers fit out the marketplace applications they can trust the information theyre providing is protect by stringent security standards. And im vinita nair. A new Jersey State Assembly committee has released thousands of documents on a bridge closure connecting new jersey to new york. Theres backlash by some of governor Chris Christies closest allies to keep it under wraps. Elaine quijano has more. Reporter the emails include communications when three access lanes in fort lee, new jersey were relewised to one. David wildstein was present at the first day of the closings and they show almost immediate fallout. That morning the general manager of the bridge emailed wildstein said just gout off the phone with the police who say theyre not happy about the traffic pattern. Another im relays concerns by fort lees borough administrator who told the port official that there were two incidents that Fort Lee Police didnt and ems had difficulty responding to a missing child later found and a cardiac arrest. Later reports show closings and an attempt to contain the fallout. Patrick foyi wrote a scathing memo. He ordered the lanes reopened calls the decision to close them abusive adding i believe this violates federal law. In vee response former Port Authority official and christie appointee told buoy im on my way to my office to discuss. There can be no discourse. Governor christie has repeat lid denied any involvement. He fired his deputy chief of staff Bridget Kelly this week says she lied to him about the closures. Today were marking a major land mark. It was the Surgeon General linching smoking to cancer. Harry reasoner filing this report back in 1964. Reporter in the history of the world, nothing ever duo so entranced, so fast. 70 million americans smoke. Today they got a message from the sur yen general whos got a blue ribbonto mortality from certain specific diseases and to the overall death rate. Jon, that report was a real blockbuster, of. Give us the impact. I remember so well when they came out. I was in the sixth grade. Everyone was smoking. Edward r. Murrow smoking on television and famous people who everybody admired like Audrey Hepburn and who can forget in breakfast at tiffanys with the long cigarette holder. It was glam orrized. Yeah it was glam or rised. 42 smoked. It dropped to 18 . Still, 44 million americans smoke and more than a dozen cancers are caused by it. I want to ask you. That 1964 report set off a lot of Public Policy and health decisions. How did it make it harder for people to smoke . Was it a financial disincentive. It was an overall Public Policy, Public Awareness campaign. When you think about it back in 196 1964, there were no restrictions where you could smoke. You could light up anywhere, which is hard to imagine nowadays. There are 26 states that ban it completely in Public Places and a lot of cities do. One of the pry mire objectives is to cut down on secondhand smoke. Its actually worked. Its dropped in half. So that has really protected not just smokers hoping to get them to quit but also people around them. And there are actually more laws that are going to come into effect too. New york city which has been very aggressive. Do we need more laws and do they actually work . Well, anthony, the age restriction on purchaseing cigarettes is sort of the last frontiers when we think about Health Policy and antismoking campaigns. Its important to point out most people get addicted really young before the age of 18 often or by the age of 21. So if we could make eight little more difficult to get the cigarettes before the age of 21 theyre less likely to get hooked and we can protect them from smoking for the rest of their lives. 91 smoke before age 21. Its a huge amount. If we can get people to hold off, its likely they wont start. Were seeing a backlash on restrictions of smoking and part of that is a new aggressive way to smoke. Take a like. Im steven dorr. Ive been smorking for 20 years. This lets me enjoy smoking. Its vapor, no ash. Best of all, no offensive order. When people are considering alternative things such as acupuncture, meditation internet support groups, whatever it is that you think might work for you gorks ahead and do it but you have to be ready to quit. Whats great is you learn the bees are attracted to the flowers because the flowers have special markings like landing lights so the bees which are messengers of their pollen help flowers reproduce and when they reproduce we get fruits, nuts, berries, and life goes forward. You covered a lot of things. What was the most fascinating, surprising . Oh, gosh. So much of it. The films that we shot where you can see things that are a million times smaller than the human eye, looking like inside the eye of a flea and we zoomed all the way down to an at tom. That to me was the most breathtaking. Tell us about this image. Using data weve created a time lapsed shot which i always want to do. What youre seeing is ocean currents and clouds being formed and the Aurora Borealis being crowned on top. Its the most magical shot of earth. So ive about been shooting like this 24 hours a day, seven days a week nonstop for over 35 years and i dont think ill ever get tired doing it because i love seeing plants move to the light. Whew how footballs 12th man can set a world record. But first, we have breaking news this morning. Former israeli Prime Minister ariel sharon has died near tel aviv. His family reports moments ago he died after being on life support for eight years. Sharon had suffered a massive stroke at the height of his power. He was 85 years old. Sharon was one of israels most controversial leaders and one of its boldest military leaders. We look back at his life. Reporter ariel sharon was the last of the israel leaders to fight in the war of inside. He was there at the beginning. He was always there. You couldnt miss him. He was colossal. He was controversial. Everything he ever did was hailed and condemned. He may well have saved the jewish state. In 1973 when israel was under siege in the yom kippur war, general ariel sharon disobeyed orders and took his forces across the suez canal into egypt. He might have been punished for this if it werent for the fact that his move won the war. He became a Founding Member of the likud party. Its platform the west bank and gaza gaza are integral parts of the jewish state. All of the communities that we build, they are not obstacle to peace. Theyre obstacle to war. Reporter in 1982 as minister of defense, he invaded lebanon. [ gunfire ] it was his war and his most monumental mistake. It took sharon six days to get to beirut. It took israel 18 years to get out n september 82, hundreds of palestinians were massacred by lebanese christians in beiruts sovereign refugee camps. An Israeli Commission concluded that sharon was indirectly responsible and recommended he be removed from the defense ministry. He was. In september 2000 sharon insisted on visiting Jerusalems Temple Mount sacred to jews and to muslims. Palestinians were enraged. The second intefadeh began the next day. Less than six months later, he was elected Prime Minister. Then, in 2004 sharon shocked the nation by announcing plans to withdraw from gaza to evacuate israeli settlements there. Now to the desperate situation in West Virginia where bottled water has been brought in, but the question is when might the tapwater be safe to drink . Residents in nine counties are waking up to the third day of a donotuse advisory after a Chemical Spill in the elk river a main source of fresh drinking water. The chemical leaked into the elk river by this plant owned by Freedom Industries. The chemical we are told, is not deadly but there have been hundreds of calls to a poison hotline complaining of everything from skin rashes to dizziness. Officials say the water is not safe for drinking it is not safe for cooking, it is not safe for even showering. Thousands of people have flocked to water Distribution Sites, and some people have said theyre simply going to get out of town until the water is safe. Anthony and very vinita and that is the concentration of the chemical in the water is decreasing, and they hope it will be safe again within a few days. Chip reid in charleston West Virginia, thank you. Neiman marcus is the latest retailer to report a highend security breach. Theyre notifying customers that credit card information may have been compromised in midseptember. In a statement, Neiman Marcus says weve begun to contain the intrusion and have taken significant steps to further enhance information. Target, the other retailer said the cyber attack against it was worse than expected. If are you planning on going to the Winter Olympics in sochi russia, beware. The state department issued a travel alert. Last month, two suicide bombers killed 30 people. The state Department Says there is no specific threat. The first job is to represent our country and our president , and also our job is you know, the olympics are really, first and foremost, about the athletes. And i think i dont want anyone to lose sight of that. These athletes have worked so hard. I kind of daydreamed the other day what it felt like when i was an athlete, pro athlete. And how much work is involved and the emotional investment. And the time investment. So i dont want us ever to detract our job is to go and cheer for them. Right. Say were here to support you in any way we can. And im looking forward to meeting all of the athletes because i think there are future leaders there, as well. When we spoke with you august, we asked you if athletes should protest. And you said thats sort of a hard one. What do you think now . I would imagine rule 50 which a lot of people dont realize exists, play as big role. Yeah, i think that probably came from the fact with john carlson, tommy smith, racer, the arms of civil rights human rights back in 68, i think the rule of it bans all political demonstrations. Theyre not supposed to protest or demonstration, and if they do, they can have their medals stripped and sent home. But i also think some of the athletes will probably have their say. And actually, wagner, for instance, has already been talking bodie miller has spoken out in favor of all of us gay people and thinking its just ridiculous which it is. If you were an athlete at these games, what do you think youd do . Knowing me . Yes. [ laughter ] i would try to do it in a diplomatic way, but knowing my personality, i would talk about it. Youd have to do something . I would do something. Knowing me, id try to mobilize others because usually i like teamtype of situation, i grew up in team sports. Tennis was my last sport i ever played. So i think i would if the other athletes are willing to do something, i would im not in that position. My job is very different. Our job is to be there for the athletes, and i think representing our country and our president , we have to be very careful to do the right thing, always. And i would worry about that as an athlete too. You mention worry. I want to ask you about the security. In past weeks, there have been two bombings in neighboring provinces. Is security something that could, i dont know, cast a shadow over the games . I think its always a possibility. But i think you somewhere to go. I mean, i have to go. Its a nobrainer. When the president obama, particularly, who has been so fantastic about supporting diversity and inclusion and universal acceptance of everyone right. I think i mean if he asked me to do anything id do it, because i think hes so much for us, and for all people that hes just been a great leader in that respect. Billie jean you have 39 grand slam titles, but youre going to the olympics. Not as an athlete, but youre still going. I didnt get to play in the olympics, but i got to call as the coach they call us captain, but were really the coach in 1996 and 2000 australia, sydney, and an amazing experience. And theres nothing like it when you get all of the athletes from all over the world together. They get so excited, you know getting to meet each other. Yeah. They love to trade the pins. Everyone has pins from all of the country. It is wonderful to watch. Its when relationships, building relationships. And the great thing about sports like music, art, and dance, we have our universal language. And if we could just have it every day throughout the world, it would just change the whole world. But its listen, things that are worthwhile are never easy. So im looking forward to the trip and going with brian and katelin. Very, very fortunate. People would get in their cars drive to the worlds fair and run out of gas and what it was going do is stop people going to the fair. They wanted to raise awareness to civil rights which they felt had been ignored. This is the first time that the Civil Rights Group had broken with the national leaders, all civil rights leaders came out against it. The president came out against it except Martin Luther kichlkt he said it was a tactical error and he didnt agree with it. He said, and its a good point, that whats worse stalling at the worlds fair that holds back you know, hundreds of thousands of people going to a fair or a stall in the u. S. Senate that holds back aspirations of millions. It was a nightmare. It didnt make the money it wanted. Robert moses wantedle 70 Million People and that would give him the Profit Margins to pay back all the investors and recreate flushing meadows park to a narc would be his dreams. These days theres a different kind of influence that goes on. For example, i think Robert Redford will lose tomorrow because he didnt play the game he didnt do a press conference with them. We can talk about the alcohol and drama all day long. Lets talk about some of the predictions. Lets talk about best Motion Picture drama. Who will win the globe for it . I think its going to be gravitys award. Avatar won a few years ago. But we have experts who give their predictions and most are going with 12 years of slave. I dont buy it. What about best actress in a drama . Think thats going to be kate blanchette. I think shes destined to win the oscar. I think she should win and will win. What about best actor. It feels like a tight race based on everything you read. It is. Matthew mcconaughey is probably out front because hes redefined himself from surfer dude to serious actor. That should count. Robert rhettford should win but hes not played the game. They have the best picture for comedy or musical. Who do you see winning that . This is a slam dunk for American Hustle to win here. I kind of like the wolf of wall street better but american wall street is the real danger mean that could sweep the oscars. Ite goeset anits got an alist cast. Is there one for best actress in a comedy or musical this year . Yes. I think amy adams has to win here because American Hustle is going to win best hustle picture. I thought amy adams was just remarkable in that film. What about best actor in a musical or coddy . I think leo dicaprio has it for the wolf of wall street. Plus he gives the biggest performance of his career here. I think, though the best performance, which is a lot more subtle is really joaquin phoenix. So obviously the show is not just about movie. Youre eating some of the favorite food from my road trip. Its great fried green tomato. This over here is from my first cookbook and its from Nigella Lawsons caramel croissant pudding. This over here is a hash brown souffle that is really so easy to make. When you find out whats in it, you say, wow, i cant imagine its going to be good but its extraordinary. Thats a tomato pie right there and this is probably one of my favorites from fried and true sesame schnitzel. Say that again. Sesame chicken schnitzel. I love it. Can you say that three times . Is it basically chicken thats been pounded out . Not only basically but is. Very easy to make dish. It is so delicious. The black and white care way seeds, caper mayonnaise sauce. Its really good. Its in my mind a perfect breakfast food for a drizzly morning like were having right now. You mentioned this before. You eat in 300 restaurant as year . I dont know that i eat in 300 restaurants a year. I eat out about 300 time as year. Not 3 hundred different restaurants. I have a lot of my favorites. A lot of it is research. Research and weight watchers. I read that you said youre actually a pretty i dont want to say boring but you tend to order the same things at restaurants. How do you go about picking the restaurants for the festival. Im really a simple eater. They think they have to impress me. Nothing impresses me more than great simple meal. Certainly i enjoy great dining and white cloth dining but to me a roast chicken, great burger, if you look at the foods i do at the festivals whether its south beach and new york the things that are popular, the burger bash barbecue event, chicken coop go late night dessert party, sushi party. You really know what i like or whats my favorite food by looking at the events i create. You started studying at the Culinary Institute but never wanted to be a chef. I didnt want to be a chef but i went to the cia 30 years ago because you didnt have to take an s. A. T. I had a passion for food. No no. You have that knowledge. When i hear someone with that title i immediately assume he must have been doing this his whole life. You had an entirely separate career for 20 years and it sounds like 40. Actually ive always been in the food business. I started aet the beginning bagging food in the chinese restaurant. I worked in the supermarket, hot dog stand, is svensons. You ran a food service for a hotel chain. And became a food director. I joined southern wine and spirits handling Corporate Communications for the company and in that role created the festival. I read that there was a handwritten letter. You sat down and wrote a letter. Actually when i turned 40 in 2000, too early to discuss that. We wont go back there. Yeah, yeah yeah. I actually wrote a letter to wayne chaplain whos a ceo of southern wine and spirits and said ive about been at this great job for 20 years. I could proebt sit here for another 20. U im looking for challenge and i could bring something to wine and spirits which is the nations largest distributor. He said lets have breakfast and a few weeks later he said i was hired. I love that both of these festivals, the money goes to charity. Both of the festivals, south beach and new york but not for profit.
