Captioning funded by cbs we also have a great lineup of guests for you this weekend including testify eli cope whos brought some of his awardwinning recipes to the dish. And classic doowhop in our saturday session. Insider training involving a well known billionaire investor high wheeling gambler and a well known athlete. Investor carl icahn, las vegas better bill walters and golfer Phil Mickelson. Marlie hall joins us now with the details. Good morning. Word of it is only being made public now but the fbi and Securities Exchange commission began looking into it three years ago. Thats when carl icahn made a bid to bicolor red sox. No charges have been filed but theres a lot of questions. It was unusual trading activity that caught the eye of the federal investigators. In the days leading up to carl icahns bid to take over clorox in 2011 there was a series of successful options trading made by Billy Walters and Phil Mickelson ahead of the corporate deal, an automatic red flag for them. The s. E. C. And fbi are trying to determine if icann tipped walters and if he in turn shared that information with mickelson. Icahn who may have had dealings with him in the past told the wall street journal says he duh not know of any investigation and added that his company is always careful to observe all legal requirements in all of our activities. Walters, one of las vegass best known professional gamblers who was the Phil Mickelson. Sources say fbi approached mickelson as he competed in dublin. He did not immediately respond but he told the wall street journal that, quote, phil is not the target of any investigation, period. Icahn, walters, and mickelson have not been formally accused of any wrongdoing. Under the laws that governor Insider Trading, it is not always illegal to leak information about a corporate bid for a takeover and it should be noun that icahnsed by to bicolor red sox ultimately failed. Thanks, marlie. Now on to the scandal regarding the Veterans Affairs administration. President obama accepted shinsekis resignation and it could lead to a criminal investigation. Lawmakers want to know who ordered vets to be put on secret weight lists with documents falsified to cover it up. Mark albert is at the white house with the latest. Good morning. Good morning. Minutes before he arrived to resign, Eric Shinseki told a Veterans Group he was mislead by some in his own department. A breach of trust, he said that exposed a, quote, unacceptable lack of integrity. I extend my deepest apology to the people i care most deeply about, and thats the veterans of this country. Shinsekis apology friday morning was not enough to save one of the president s longest serving cabinet secretary is. Thinki think it was ricks judgment he could not carry out the next stages of reform without being a distraction himself. My assessment was unfortunately hes ride. President obama had backed shinseki as recently as last week that at this stage rick is committed to solving the problem and working with us to do it. Reporter but since then two government reports confirmed widespread systemic problems in the v. A. A widespread audit found there were altered wait times. Shinseki retired as a fourstar army general before taking over the countrys Largest Health care system. His final marching orders fire leaders where the scandal broke, stop all nationwide. The president put the v. A. s number two sloan gibson in charge. Some leaders in Congress Said shinsekis resignation wont be enough. Today ees announcement really changes nothing. One personnels change cannot be used to paper over a systemic problem. Our veterans deserve better. Well hold the president accountable until he makes things right. The top two senators of the Appropriations Committee are calling for a department of justice probe to determine if criminal charges are warranted against anyone found have falsified patient records. Vinita . Mark albert at the white house this morning. Thank you. Ben kesling covers issues for the wall street journal and also a former marine who served in both iraq and afghanistan. He is in chicago. Good morning. Good morning. We heard from john boehner that this is not enough. Shinseki really became the poster boy in all of this. It seems like he had no choice but to resign. Is that your choice also . Its definitely what people were saying. What you said, he became the poster boy of the scandal. He resigned because he did not want distraction for fixing the problems at the v. A. He didnt want the distraction of focusing on him and wondering whether hell step down. He wanted to allow somebody else to come in a fresh set of eyes on the problem and to make some fixes. But, ben, i mean is he kind of being made a scapegoat here . This report suggests that this problem has existed for quite some time and has spread throughout the entire system. Right. Well, he has been in charge of the v. A. Since 2009 so critics say he has had plenty of time to institute some changes. Those who have supported him say the system is broken. The i. G. Report interim i. Dwchlt report that came out wednesday indicate that there are systemic problems at the v. A. Right now, the latest number 42 facilities, the Inspector General is looking at. And theres been indications that theres been schedule manipulation, wait time problems tinkering with the software thats used to make appointments for patients nationwide, and those fixes are not going to those fixes arent going to happen just by getting rid of the secretary. Its been interesting to hear him say he thought the problem was limited and he really was too trusting of some people. How are veterans responding to this decision . Well the major Veterans Groups throughout all of this have essentially supported him. The largest Veterans Group in the United States, the American Legion legion, was the only group that called for him to resign. All of the ogroups gave him support. And one of the reasons they did that is they were worried that as soon as he resigned all the news would focus elsewhere and nobody would be paying attention to the systemic problems, and, you know as of right now, there are two holes in the v. A. Leadership. So secretary shinseki is gone and one of his top aides, dr. Robert petzel stepped down about two weeks ago. So the key leaders on the hospital side and the top of the v. A. Have left and those are two gaps that remain right now. So, ben, what does the v. A. Do to solve its problems that point . Well, thats a big question. Not really sure where they go from here. Theyll have to find new leadership. So one of the questions that the Obama Administration is trying to figure out is where do you get the next leader for the v. A. . Does it come from is it a fourstar general again . An admiral . Is it somebody who comes from the Business World . How do you find the right person to fix some of these systemic issues that the v. A. Has. Thank you so much. Thank you. It will be a major topic of discussion tomorrow morning on face the nation. Bob schieffers guests will include john mccain,. Now to the scrap over the nba los angeles clippers. The league wants half opener Donald Sterling out but he refuses to sell and is now sueing the league for at least 1 billion. The coowner and wife shellie has a deal to sell the team for 2 billion to Steve Ballmer. Ben tracy picks up the story. One strategy one team. Reporter Steve Ballmer is going to pay the 2 billion in cash. After all, hes worth 20 billion. Were told he believes buying a Pro Sports Team in los angeles is a, quote, onceinalifetime opportunity. So its a simple law of supply and demand. Ray katz. I think he wants to be an owner of a team and of a Tremendous League in the market and can afford to do that. Reporter balmer broke the deal with shelly sterling. But not Donald Sterling. Hes vowing to fight the sale of his team. Max bleacher is his attorney. He has not agreed to accept mr. Balmers bid or any other bid, period. Reporter but a source close to shellie sterling says she now has sole control on the clippers after her husband was diagnosed with alzheimers after being diagnosed earlier this month. There is no proof of that. Hes calling it vast overstatement and that the 80yearold only has a modest mental impairment and is slowing down. I asked about his health on thursday. Is Donald Sterling stable . Absolutely. I dont see any evidence to the contrary. The 2 billion price tag will make this the second highest price ever paid for a sports team in history. For cbs this morning saturday, ben tracy, los angeles. Time magazines Senior Sports writer Shaun Gregory has been covering the clippers story from the beginning. Good morning. Good morning, anthony. We said it was going get messy, and now it is. Now theres this hail mary lawsuit. I dont think its going to stop. The language unconstitutional oppressive. It seems like he would have to stop the second suit. I think i like the roast america dont get Donald Sterling. What exactly is his motivation at this point . You think at this point, 2 billion offer. He bought it for what did you tell us . 1 2 12. 5 million. Maybe hes trying to clear his name. Maybe hes trying to use this as leverage. I will lift the lifetime ban, i want go to games, and then maybe ill withdraw the other suits. First it was worth a half a billion dollars and now a 2 billion bid . Sterlings attorney is saying its an antitrust deal. I would argue the opposite. This is like a prestige premium. 2 billion. People were running in to buy it quickly. How did he manage to do this because i read there were superior bids from people like grant hill. What did he offer that was different to shelly . I think he offers to the league and to shelly hes going to get approved. Hes a former c. O. Of microsoft. The 2000s wasnt the greatest for microsoft. Hes kind of an entertainer which i didnt know. If youre the head of the commission, adam silver what do you do here . I think you let it play out. With the suit you talk to him, see whats going on. The meeting to kick sterling out of the game has been canceled right now because the sale seems to be going through, but again, a lastminute lawsuit to block the sale might change that. I think if youre silver, you sit back and watch. So far, so good. Immediately after the announcement Magic Johnson took to twitter and said this is great idea. What do you think . Hes been involved. This is something hes wanted. After running a company like microsoft, running a Basketball Team seems like a it comes with its unique challenges burke hes a very good manager. Shaun gregory thanks for all the messy details. The miami heat are returns to the finals for the fourth year in a row. If you look at those markets, other half of the sales, all cash aurs. Miami, all sales. 70 . 70 . Isnt that a phenomenal number . Is it happening in metro areas nationwide. Its also happening in rural heartland across america. Theyre getting these discounts of about 13 . 13 below market value. What i found fascinating is when i hear the words cash offer, it sounds like all cash. But people are being recreative. Theyre looking for other forms to find cash. Yes. Theyre getting in there. Like norm and miami. California, for example. If youre dangling the cash youre going to get in there and get the home you want. What are the all ter gnatternate forms . They maybe can qualify for a mortgage but they dont want to go through all the steps. You really have to make a clean competitive offer. They have to go above the offers if you want to stay in the mix. Clean, competitive, no contingencies ideally and i would suggest you find out whats motivating the seller. They may not care. At the end of the day, money is money. They just want an offer thats going to go through, hasslefree, moneyfree, get their mon and. Are these cash offers also going to pull back . Right. The Distressed Properties we are seeing fewer and fewer of them which is why the investors are being thrown out of the game theyre still finding good deals. The biggest take home is that 37 of the worlds adults are overweight or obese. Its particularly dramatic in the state, even though were only 5 of the worlds population, we make up 13 of the worlds overweight or oh beans population, but really what the study showed us is its another an american problem. Its a worldwide one. Was it surprising in terms of where obesity is becoming most prevalent . One of the most striking findings is even though its increasing everywhere its increasing fastest in developed country. The thought is as we become more modernized, theres greater access to processed foods and with less activity our waistlines are expanding. Is there any country thats decreasing obesity . Not one single country. Thats discouraging. Given the dismal outlook as holly calls it here, where do you go from here . Back to the drawing board, increasingly realizeing you have to change the environment so that people trip over healthy environmentals. Thats starting at the schools but that doesnt help if you go home and dont exercise and have unhealthy behaviors. Theres something thats promising. In minnesota a whole town got together, lets make it healthier. The schools made the lunches better, the restaurants had healthier choices and the mayors made sure there were walking paths and bike riding paths and it was importantly successful. They had decrease in obeseityobesity. This has now been expanded to the beach communities outside los angeles and think this is ultimately going to be a very effective way. Change the environment. And in a related story the Cancer Institute released a new warning about indoor tanning. Whats the story, holly . Our risk for melanoma goes up 59 for anybody who used a tang bed. This was really impactful. In fact, a lot of people use tanning beds hoping to get a base so they dont get a sun burn. This study shows whether or not you get a sun burn using the tanning bed or outside yausing it increase your chances of getting melanoma. This week there are new regulations. What are they . Theyre now going to have a black box warning kind of like what we see on cigarette boxes. People under 18 shouldnt use them and theyre also going to put in regulations where the beds have timer and there are limits on the uv levels that you can be exposed to. You mentioned under 18. Why are they so focused on younger people . With tanning beds, the earlier the start and the longer you use them the risk goes up. Now to the still unfolding health care scandals at the Veterans Affairs administration. Theyve forced out Eric Shinseki and if some lawmakers get their way, theres more to come including possible criminal charges. Mark albert is at the white house. Good morn mark. Reporter good morning. Shinseki had been one of the president s original members. He praised the fourstar general to reduce homelessness among veterans and to slash the backlog of disability claims but the secretary became embroiled in a scandal over whether secret waiting listing kept veterans from getting care they need and were covered up. Yesterday he spoke to a Veterans Group saying he had been mislead. Moments later he arrived at the white house and offered president obama his resignation. Seniors in congress including republican leernd democratic majority leader agree the problems are systemic and agree that just replacing shinseki wont be enough. Theyre now calling for the department of justice to investigate whether criminal charges should be charged against any v. A. Staffers found guilty of fast fig any records. Thanks mark. A v. A. That we need to put in make the wait time zero wait time to make it seem like the patients didnt have to wait that long. To demonstrate she showed us how the manipulation is done in the v. A. Sotystem called vista. Scamming the system. They hide the wait time of 13 days she changes the veterans desired date to the date of the appointment. When she alters the desired date to june 10 the computer reports 0 days. Several tell us this is how wait times of three to six months have been routinely conceal eded. We were told verbally. Do you think his dealt was a result of another being seen sooner . Yes. I think they are doing the followups in a timely manner and if they did them in a timely manner hed be alive today. I absolutely believe that. They would have caught that. They would have caught it sooner. Reporter the whistle blower tells us the order to conceal the delays came from multiple supervisors who qualified for bonuses in part by reporting low wait times. The v. The Financial Times reports that next week apple will annoy a new way to connect you to what techies call the internet of things. Your i phone would gain the power to control your home lights appliances, security, and so on. Dan is here with a preview. Good morning. Good morning. What are you expecting apple to tell us next week . Its usually focused on software and concepts and one of the concepts is apple getting into the smartphone. Thats a big thank that google is interested in. Weve gotten so used to the conferences, hearing the results of them, changing to our phone, to our computers. Youre telling us the next big thing is in our home things well be able to control from our i phone. As apple says were going to set up a smartphone system and others are invited in to make it work. Google has already taken steps in this area havent they . They bought something called net labs. Thats a cold favorite they make a remote controlled thermostat. Definitely a first step and its google getting into the hardware of smartphones so ple has got to be looking at that and saying we have to make sure were up front with google in this. It seems for so long apple has resisted putting their software in anybodys hardware business. Thats a good question. Apple would rather have companies that make refridge raters and stoves and Home Security systems and wash mag cheens make stuff thats apple apravged and if you do that, maybe you can get into the apple store and they want everybody to get the approved by apple check box on them. If we have this sort of Home Invasion do you think this is something Consumers Want or are going to embrace . Its something people have wanted since the world fair and the jetsons. It might be cool when your refrigerator tells you what you need. Even though we have programs that do that it seems like untouched territory. Samsung made some of these things for year bus they dont have the helpth to get rid of everything. Once you get the Big Technology groups like apple or google you may thing about it. You think this is the next frontier of it then . Its one of them. Its like can you get everybody to Work Together . Thats always the key. I would be nas nated if someone doesnt want this technology. I think its amazing. People resisted for a long time. Eventually eventually even your mom has a smartphone. She texts poorly but she has one. Thank you so much. For a lot of people summer is the time when you have time to read a book and this summer there are plenty of pageturners to choose from. Sara, good morning. Hi. I want to get this out of the way. Amazon is under fire from publishers, i thinking the books are unfairly listed. Does that affect you . No. Its a very large company. We have a team of seven. I know its going to sound onerous, but we read for a living. We read a lot of books. Choose the best books of the month, the season, the year and interview a lot of authors. By our choice were the curators and we have nothing to do with the business of amazon. Lets get to the list. At the top of the list and this book is very highly anticipated. This is Hillary Clintons memoir called hard choices. Have you read it yet in. I know a little bit about it. Its primary will i the last 15 years. She already wrote a book that was a traditional memoir from childhood on up. Its about the hard choices she made in life. Hers specifically were to run for president to run against obama and then to work with him and then the choices she made during the time she was secretary of state. We should mention the book is published by Simon Schuster which is a division of cbs. Yes. Her book will come out tuesday. Her last book was hugely successful and shes obviously a very important person. A lot of people want to read on the chapter on bengay city. Lets goo forward. This book is based on the life of an anthropologist. Its based loosely on anthropologist margaret meade. But if its it sound wonky, its not. Its about a woman who goes in the jungle with one husband and comes out with two. I dont think i need to say more. The other is a book of unknown americans. This is a book that sort of snuck up on us at amazon but its a novel told in many voices of latin americas people who come in this country and live in one Apartment Building in delaware. The love affairs and really about what it means to be an american and what it means to have come here and what it cost them, what you get. I think it could be a sleeper hit. Another one is war of the whales. Its about the environmental battle in the ocean. Yes. Its sort of an environmental whodunit and there a lot of experiments that the government is doing, the navy is doing in the water that seems to be affecting sea life and so its there are no bad guys but there are sort of good guys and other people who think theyre good guys and how what theyre doing thats going to affect our world. In the young adult category you like we were liars. Right. There are no vampires zombies. Its about an ordinarily messed up family a wealthy family that summers in nantucket and secrets. The truth about harry quebair . Itsen the academic environment. Its about an author who goes to try to solve a mystery in involving his former teacher, and its like a big comic book but in a good fun way. Our beach bags are going to be full. Theres a lot of reading there. Sara nelson thanks for being with us. Thank you. Up next the original Rebel Without a cause, james dean was as cool is that really come ochlt what does that mean . A new approach for defining cool. Next on cbs this morning. [ brian ] in a race, its about getting to the finish line. In life, its how you get there that matters most. Its important to know the difference. Like when i found out i had a blood clot in my leg. My doctor said that it could travel to my lungs and become an even bigger problem. And that i had to take action. So he talked to me about xarelto®. [ male announcer ] xarelto® is the first oral prescription blood thinner proven to treat and help prevent dvt and pe that doesnt require regular blood monitoring or changes to your diet. [ brian ] for a prior dvt i took warfarin which required routine blood testing and dietary restrictions. Not this time. While i was taking xarelto® i still had to stop racing but i didnt have to deal with that blood monitoring routine. You made great time. I found another way. [ male announcer ] dont stop taking xarelto®, rivaroxaban, unless your doctor tells you to. While taking xarelto® you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. Xarelto® may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. Xarelto® can cause serious bleeding, and in rare cases, may be fatal. Get help right away if you develop unexpected bleeding unusual bruising or tingling. If you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto® watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. Do not take xarelto® if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. Tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. Before starting xarelto® tell your doctor about any conditions such as kidney, liver, or bleeding problems. Xarelto® is proven to reduce the risk of dvt and pe. With xarelto® there is no regular blood monitoring and no known dietary restrictions. Treatment with xarelto® was the right move for me. [ male announcer ] ask your doctor about xarelto® today. For more information including savings options, download the xarelto® Patient Center app, call 1888xarelto, or visit teamxarelto. Com. Hey. Im ted and this is rudy. Say hi rudy. [ barks ] [ chuckles ] id do anything to keep this guy happy and healthy. Thats why im so excited about these new milkbone brushing chews. Whoa im not the only one. Its a brilliant new way to take care of his teeth. Clinically proven as effective as brushing. Ok, here you go. Have you ever seen a dog brush his own teeth . The twist and nub design cleans all the way down to the gum line, even reaching the back teeth. They taste like a treat but they clean like a toothbrush. Nothing says you care like a milkbone brushing chew. [ barks ] i know what youre thinking. Did he fire six shots or five. The question you have to ask yourself do you feel lucky, punk . His character was very cool. But what did it mean to be cool . Generations of americans have used the term but theres been no accepted universe at definition. Now that may be about to change. Derek thompson is editor good morning. Good morning. I hesitate to define cool because that almost seems uncool. But they have attempted to do that in the study. Yes. Its like beauty or humor. Everyone has their own definition. What this study did is they said if were going to study coolness, we have to define it. Its a violation of the norm. What does it mean . Theres like specific rules. You have to break a rule that you think is repressive in some ways right . Thats exactly right. Coolness is a rebellion. The question is are you rebelling against something thats illegitimate. You look at Butch Cassidy and the sundance kid. Why are most considered degenerates but theyre considered cool . They werent robbing mothers or single children. They were robbing banks. Theyre monoliths that arent particularly cool. You see right there the definition theyre using is really useful. A measured act of rebellion. How can that translate say, in corporate culture. So you look at a company like gap. A lot of companies are trying to reinvent themselves and seem cool when they dont have that reputation. So what gap did they essentially said, look we understand our demographic to be a lot of jen x moms. They put Lenny Kravitz and Sayre Ka Jessica park never their ads and suddenly people associate them, not with faceless gap but a new face that can be interesting and rebellious. Its so obvious to see why being cool in marketplace is beneficial because it makes you want to buy a brand. Can you look at bland and be turned off . Yes. You look at a brand like abercrombie. I think whats happening is youre saying something really interests about about brands. So if im making a choice about what tooth paste to use, i have no idea which one works on my enamel enamel. I buy anything with a c. Where do i go to buy this yep, amazon. The power of the brand is diluted. Brand is more powerful when there are lesser environments. I think youre cool. Appreciate it. So heartfelt. Coming up in hollywood, summer means playing it for laughs. Thats so weird. Is anything else missing . No. Why would they just break in and steal i dont know. Therell be plenty more where that came from. Youre watching cbs this morning saturday. Angela is fourth four years in a row. Why is she not on the cover . Scorned hookers, hungry animals major and minor jeerinjuries, the weather. See those guys . They literally die from their own farts. This is just one of 15 rrated comedies due out this summer. So are family comedies d. O. A. In hollywood . Matt good morning. I feel like we went from all action to rrated. What behind this . Its a nice change. Theyre all pg and pg13 and those are designed to appeal to the widest audience. They wind up being very tame. They want to do it in a costeffective way. Neighbors is about the tenth of the most recent x men movie. This is supposed to get our danger now. You saw a million ways to die in the west. How raunchy was it . Its so raunchy i cant define anything define anything in it or we would be fined by the fcc. Theres profanity, vul garrity, sexual sexuality, nudity and bathroom humor. My sons going to enjoy that. I normally like adam sandler moves but when i saw the commercials it didnt seem that funny and it didnt do well. Has it shifted . I think might have shift add little bit. In the case of blended, that may be adam and ler. Sandler. If we changed the channel, we might see pgrated comedy. In that world its harold to release a pg movie because this is a generation thats been raised on the edge of your stuff. Is that why you think hollywood is headed in this direction . I do. I think thats exactly why. How do you compete in this marketplace where there is youre going up against the big blockbusters. If youre only going to one movie you going to see the big blockbuster or the little adam sandler movie . Its a tough market to be in. The rrated comedy can tap into this audience. Theres a couple coming out. Lets start off with cami. Jenny mccarthy and susan sarandon. There you see a woman played by melissa mccarthy. Just looking at her makes me laugh. Thats a good sign. Shes one of the queens of this rrated Comedy Movement with bridesmaid and this.
