It is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States and the nations worst terror attack since 9 11. Tonight were learning more about the gunman. Dianne gallagher reports. Reporter the man who carried out the worst mass shooting in American History wanted to be a police officer. In the short marriage to his ex wife she says he became violent. When he would get in his temper he would express hate toward thing and everything at the moment when he was an emotional. He would turn totally different. Reporter they say early sunday morning he opened fire inside a nightclub. People started screaming and shots were ringing out. You know it is not a show anymore and you have to do what you have to do. Reporter some sent frantic messages for help. After several hours swatting officers took down a door. Officers shot mateen dead. He was a american living in florida. The fbi interviewed him twice for potential ties to extremist, but those investigations were close. During the shooting he called 911 to pledge allegiance to isis. Something his neighbors find difficult to believe. Families wait desperately to get any information on their loved ones. You cannot describe it. All the waiting, to find out if your son is okay. It is horrible. I dont wish this on anyone. This list will continue to get longer. This is the name of some of the victims. As of now six of the dead have been identified and their families have been notified of their loss. The victims range in age from 20 to 36 years old. We are learning a little bit more about them. Stanley mother called her come son son kind and family members are remembering another as caring. Another attended college at the university of Central Florida and just came out to his family two years ago. The pain for those lost in the massacre has reached the castro. A candlelight vigil is taking place tonight. Kate cagle has more from harvey milk plaza and how the community is reacting. Reporter 2 00 a. M. He was placing flowers on this corner. He was adding to a memorial for a friend who committed suicide when he heard the news. A shooting at a gay nightclub on the other side of the country. It is difficult. It is like, not again. Reporter he has been adding roses one by one ever sense. Now many others are adding to his work. Eden stopped by the corner during her run from the sun site district. She went to college in orlando where she was president of the equal. My mom called me at 7 00 in the morning and she was screaming and crying and told me to call all my friends. I have the idea. Reporter pulse was a weekly spot for her. She knows the bartenders and bouncers. So far her friends are all alive. I had 152 of my friends across orlando that checked in as safe on facebook. I remember i wanted to make sure everyone was okay. Reporter with 100 people shot and half of them dead she is prepared for the fact that new more bad news could be on the way. As the names of the dead trickle out she is added them to a sign on this corner. There is no idea where people have to hate each other. Reporter to her the massacre to him it reminds him of 1959 which led to greater rights for gays and lesbians. This will make us stronger. The safety of San Franciscos pride parade came under question today. Alecia read tells us police will step up patrols next weekend at head of the parade. Reporter authorities are stepping up patrols after the mass shooting in orlando left 50 people dead and dozens more injured. These murders plus the man arrested in santa monica who police say was on the way to the pride parade with weapons and explosives all come at a particularly concerning time. San franciscos pride celebration is june 25 and 26. Police will get into specific security protocol, but just like with any large event, patrols will be heightened for the pride parade. Officers in santa monica arrested a heavily armed man who told them he was on his way to the gay pride parade in los angeles. He said he intended to cause harm. Officers recovered three Assault Rifle is, ammunition and chemicals that could have been used to make an explosive. Police say he drove down to Southern California from indiana. Authorities do not know if there is any connection between this arrest and the mass shooting at the gay nightclub in orlando. We have some fog filling in on the coastline overnight and into early tomorrow. You getting up with some patchy fog and then lots of sunshine. Temperatures in the 70s and 80s inland and 60s along the coastline. The next couple of days the temperatures will drop off. Early this morning a gunman entered a day nightclub in florida called pulse and opened fire. 50 people were killed and 53 others injured as gunfire rang out. Here is what we learned about him. He has been identified as 29 yearold omar mateen a us citizen born in new york but his parents from afghanistan. He was not under surveillance but in 2014 they discovered he had ties to an american suicide bomber. Authorities say he purchased two firearms within the last two weeks or so. We are also seen lots of vigils across the country in new york, texas everyone holding a moment of silence to remember the victims. And certainly everyone giving respect on social media. I know you have seen that as well. We have to stay vigilant you never go. That is the scary thing about this. It seemed like such a random act. It is disheartening.
