Kron4s jeff pierce was at San Franciscos science march rally where he spoke to some of the people marching. jeff pierce thousands of marchers in support of the Scientific Community gathered saturday morning in San Francisco to answer the threat they see as the politicizing of what should be established scientific fact. Though some people would ask us to believe differently science is not an idealogy. The threats are to the scientists themselves, having their work questioned, denied their integrity, theyre being called liars and frauds. That is a line we cannot stand. The fear is that the questioning of science by the Political Climate in the Current Administration in washington will result in serious cutbacks in scientific research. The cuts that we are talking about will really have a major impact on the progress and the speed of science. My research relies on funding from nih and there are a lot of concerns about that budget being cut which would have a big impact of the science i do focused on autism. What happens when we start to erode the funding or the trust we have in scientific institutions. The fact that were even having a debate about the climate changing is still surprising. Those speaking at the rally hoped to transcend idealogy and rely on scientific fact. Even their rallying chants were an attempt to rise above partisan politics. What do we want, evidence based science. When do we want it . After peer review. During the das investigation, the Santa Cruz CountySheriffs Office created a serious incidient review board. Tasked with improving its response to critical incidents. Resisting the war on science is central to the survival of our democracy. Act up fight back. Resist. What youve seen here and in hundreds of cities across the world including two hundred International Cities gives me plenty of hope that the will is there. Its the next steps that we have to fill in. After the rally the thousands of science supporters marched up Market Street to join those already gathering at civic center celebrating earth day. Kron fours Spencer Blake spoke with that attorney has the latest in the back and forth between both sides. Follow along closely. The past several days have seen uc berkeley cancel the planned april 27th speech by ann coulter citing safety concerns then reverse course and offer may second as an option. That was soon followed by the threat of litigation from the Berkeley College republicans or bcr , which was followed by a University Statement friday saying the groups attorney had factual errors in the discussion. They didnt point out any and i pointed out specific emails and documents that blow their story out of the water. Thats attorney harmeet dhillon, whose latest response on asaturday laid out a trail of emails dating back to march 17th in which she says the b cr discussed with the school the invitation they extended to coulter. The university claims it didnt know about such an invitationuntil officials read about it in a newspaper article. What really upsets dhillon is what she calls a secret rule the university laid out on march first about highprofile visitors having to speak before three pm for safety reasons. She says the policy was unpublishedand also apparently didnt apply to people like former mexican president vicente fox, who spoke in the evening at uc berkeley. They have a due process obligation as a Government Entity to apply rules equally and fairly. Some students we talked to feel like the scheduling issues for such a Large University and a wellknown speaker may be legitimatebut everyone we talked to said coulter should be allowed to speak. If we dont allow her to speak then we dont have the opportunity to engage with her and challenge her opinions or try to understand where she comes from. I dont agree with what she says bit that doesnt really matter. Well known liberals like comedian bill maher and Bernie Sanders have made statements defending coulters right to speak on campus. Nats of shootingjeff rosell Santa Cruz County district attorneythis is an absolute tragedy and our hearts go out to the family of luke smith. But our hearts also go out to our entire community that a 15 year old lost his life during this incident. During the das investigation, the Santa Cruz CountySheriffs Office created a serious incidient review board. Tasked with improving its response to critical incidents. Though not all were because of the smith case. The five findings and 15 recommendations were released on friday. Some of the findings improve supervision at critical incidents. Manage the use of a k9. The use of a rifle should be monitored. And improved training. The smith family contributed to those findings their biggest concern was making sure lifesaving efforts werent delayed. Deputy chief craig wilson scsowhen we examined that what we found in all cases is that its not necessary to either handcuff or retain the handcuffs on if its going to cause a delay in life saving efforts. In smiths case, he wasnt handcuffed after he was shot but he was Still Holding a knife. Thats when officers used nonlethal force for about a minute before he was given emergency medical care. Its those lessons the Sheriffs Office says its already putting into practice. Sheriff jim hart scsonobody feels good about this case. We dont ever want a call for sevice to end this way, this case has taken a tremendous toll on the family, its taken a toll on the community and its taken a toll on the sos and no body wins in these types of tragic cases. will live look outside.
