Has been working the story for us. The Vallejo Police chief expressing relief he did not lose two of his own. Reporter they are counting their blessings. On a coffee break when they were confronted by a man with an salt weapon hours after his 2yearold son accidentally shot himself at a home. The Surveillance Video is chilling. The police say this is 41year old adam powell calmly walked into the front door on of the starbucks off of i80. He is wearing body armor and has an Assault Rifle with a 70 round magazine. He pointed the gun at two officers at 8 45 sunday night. When he tried to fire the gun jammed. He tried to clear it while running away. A man with a riffel decided to am ambush us at the starbucks. The two officers chased him for a block and shot him three times when he allegedly, again, tried to clear his gun. He was carried a loaded handgun. He is in critical condition. The police say he drove passed the starbucks six minutes before the confrontation. We presume it was a premeditated ambush on our officer. Reporter a motive is not known. The Police Wanted to ask him about the accidental shooting of his 2yearold son earlier that day. He left the home before the police arrived. The boy is treated for a gunshot wound to the upper body. So, the suspect still being treated for his injuries at the hospital and be sides the soft body armor he had on he was carrying a handgun. They are trying to figure out what motivated him in the first place. We know he had a sorted past. A convicted fell on. Did that have anything to do with why he may of done this in the first place, allegedly . Reporter the police say his son accidentally shot himself. Maybe the suspect was overcome with guilt and concerned because he was a felon with weapon storage issues. It is all possible. We are hearing from the family he may of tried to force that confrontation. Amazing when you think how close this really, really was. It could have been the lead story everywhere. All right, thank you, hen. We now learned the name of a man shot to death as he fired at officers. The medical examiner says the 26yearold from pacifica died from his injuries yesterday. The shooting happened on friday night. His officers responded to calls about a person causing a disturbance and making threats at the Lakeshore Shopping Center there in the sunset district. The police say that he shot at officers hitting one of them in the head before he was shot. The Officials Say the wounded officer, downs, is now partially paralyzed on one side of his body. He is, though, expected to survive. The police say an officer had no choice but to open fire when a suspect charged at the police with a metal rake and refused to listen to commands. It happened at a home on chase street. Residents called with a upon report of someone banging on their doors and windows screaming they wanted to kill everyone in the house. When the officers arrived on the scene they got the 32year old suspect away from the house and on to the street. The police say the man then came at the officers with the metal rake and would not stop despite several attempts with a taser. Officers lives threatened in this. The suspect continued to charge the officer. Continued to move forward and threaten the officers with a weapon that he would not put down. A women who lives at the house telling us that he had known the man since he young and saying the Mental Health system and the police let him down. The police say all of their officers go through Mental Health training. The District Attorneys Office is leading the investigation. Now, the police are searching for a man who, they say, ran over and killed a worker at a local business. They responded to True World Foods there on william street at 11 45 this morning. The investigators say that someone driving a light colored pick up truck pulled into that employee parking lot. It appears the truck driver may have been trying to steal wooden palettes from the business when he was interrupted by the victim. There was some sort of altercation and the driver ran over and killed the worker. The police are hoping that Surveillance Video will help track down that driver. We will be reviewing that trying to figure it all out and hoping that it is located or aimed in an area that captured the entire incident that will be Critical Evidence in this case. The victims name has not been released while his family is notified. They are looking also at Surveillance Videos from businesses around the area. Jury selection is underway in a trial of a man accused of kidnapping and killing lamar. Her family has been waiting four years to get it started. Reporter cameras were not allowed inside of the courtroom. What i can tell you it was packed. One of the first things the judge told perspective jurors is that this trial is expected to last through april of 2017. He looks different than he has in the past. Her body never found. Today, the judge warned 90 potential jurors from this moment on they were not to look at media reports or research the history of the case or talk to anyone about it. More than half told the judge it was a hardship and tried to get dismissed the other his to fill out this 31 page packet asking jurors questions about their personal history, viewpoints on dna and searched for sierra in the past. The latest on the efforts when we come back e back investigators say a man shot in a home was stalking a womaned in of that house. Now, that shooting happened on friday on oak noll circle. The 43yearold man, from georgia, forced his wayed in of the home and opened fire his way inside of the home and opened fire before he was shot by one of the occupants. He was located outside of the home. Emergency crew took him to the hospital where he underwent surgery. He faces charges including attempted murder. The police are looking for a driver that struck and killed a 73yearold woman walking in a cross walk. The woman was hit around 7 00 on saturday night. Todays coroners official identified the woman as lilian garcia. 5 vehicles were in the area at the time of the crash. Including this one you see here. A white full sized chevy pick up truck with a camper shell. A second photo shows a white toyota pick up truck with a king cab here. They are potential witness vehicles here. They are asking the drivers of the cars or anyone who may have seen the crash to contact them. The faa is investigating a near miss with Virgin America flag. The officials are saying it happened at noon yesterday. 8 miles east of sfo. No word on how close those air crafts were to colliding. However, each flag did land safely. A navy man is facing dui charges after he drove his pick up truck off of a san diego bridge over the weekend going into a crowded park below. Four people were killed and nine others were injured. The others say that the 25year old was alone in that truck on saturday when he lost control of the vehicle and dropped 60 feet below where hundreds gathered for a festival. Investigators said that he remains hospitalized with major injuries. He is expected to survive but facing dui charges. It has been 27 years since the earthquake. Hard to believe but the 27th anniversary of the earthquake is today. The quake left widespread damage to the bay area after the lo ma prieta quake. We made changes since include getting a new bay bridge. The question is, how prepared are we now, though . The director of the ntsb and Security Center at the Transportation Institute joins us live via skype. Thank you for joining us. My pleasure. Everyone says it is not a matter of when that quake will come, if that quake will come, i mean, but when. How much was this quake a part of preparing. The quake was one of the first really big urban earthquakes in a state that had efforts made to prepare. We had building concodes that were intended to protect us and we certainly thought our engineered infrastructure was in good condition. However, we discovered the bay bridge collapse, the structures collapse, so caltrans undertook a statewide effort to retrofit all of the freeways and they completed the project and built a new bay bridge for us and quite a bit of roadwork on state highways. Here in the bay area we have a lot of publicly owned streets. We dont have enough money to keep them in good condition. If you look at the upon report card that we get from the Civil Engineers for our infrastructure we are only doing about a d plus level. So we feed to be willing to invest more we need to be willing to invest more money in repairing our city roadways, county roadways, those are the ones we use every day. We have come a long way, dont you think . Oh, yes, the caltrans retrofit enhanced our safety. B. A. R. T has done an excellent job of retrofitting their facilities and most of the transit agencies have takes Emergency Preparedness seriously and prepared both training for their employees and retrofitting of their structures. Everybody in the bay has has to take personal responsibility for being prepared when the big one hits. Now, i know you did a study on the rail system in japan after their big quake in 2011 that took out the nuclear plant. What did you think from their light rail system after that big quake . Well, they have a high speed rail system where they installed a complex system that allows them to sense earthquakes very quickly and give people a few seconds to a minute notice when they are coming. So the high speed rail train was traveling 200 miles an hour when the first wave hit the centers. By the time the shaking waves hit the track they were able to slow the train down to only 60 miles an hour. So we know it this Technology Works very well. High spread rail system for california is being designed they are studying the kind of system they will build for our train. In terms of early worning we are talking about a matter of seconds. It can safp so lane might haves. Early Warning System we are talking about a matter of seconds. It can be greatly used here. A laboratory in los angeles and university of berkeley class have been partnering to create a system for us and during the napa earthquake a couple years ago it performed very well. It gave 8 seconds notice to b. A. R. T, 9 seconds to San Francisco officer of Emergency Services and as you point out a few seconds like that is enough time to stop surgeries, to stop working with Hazardous Material and give people an opportunity to duck and cover in their office space or wherever they might be. Great value to the system. But it is expensive to install system that is large enough to cover the entire bay area. I think funding is probably one of the Biggest Challenges at the moment.
