This will be a very active first half of january, very active in the bay area. Rainfall totals today, not everybody picked up rainfall. The focus was up in the north bay. See the numbers out toward guerneville, 0. 33. Santa rosa around a quarter of an inch. Sebastopol, tapering off. San francisco only reporting 0. 01, barely measurable. That was the first wave pushing on shore early this morning and into portions of the afternoon. On the satellite, radar right now, another batch of rainfall just offshore. In fact, right now, closer look, you see the yellows showing up near the Santa Cruz County coastline. With that, organized rainfall here for parts of the bay area and well work this map up to the north and the coverage increasing as well. In fact, the distance from ocean beach, as we take a look at that, within about 10 miles or so. That is actually beginning to move closer to the bay area. From ocean beach, around 18, 19 miles, closing in on the bay area shoreline. More rain in the forecast for later tonight and into early monday morning. Heres our live camera looking toward the golden gate. Im looking for wet roadways, nothing showing up just yet. But this is the key headline over the next few days. A very active weather pattern developing. First system pretty weak for tonight. Another one later in the day monday into tuesday. Once again into wednesday and thursday. A couple of sightings of the 78 yearold woman, including the possibility she made it to oakland from her neighborhood here, 20 miles away. Relatives of gladys ganter rushed to the greyhound terminal in oakland this afternoon, hoping their hours of worry were over. Because she is so frail. Shes an elderly woman. Its cold. Very cold. And for an older lady, very cold. Reporter ganter lives with her daughter and grandson and slipped out of the house without explanation after everyone went to bed. Her loved ones say she has alzheimers. They last saw her in her room at around midnight reading. They went to bed, got up and checked on her at about 2 20, 2 30 in the morning and she was gone at that time. Reporter search and rescue volunteers organized canvass of the neighborhood. They were encouraged when a bus driver reported seeing ganter outside a bart station. I went to el cerrito bart. They said she was seen earlier today, have pictures and everything. Reporter but still, they couldnt find her. At 3 00, a woman matching her description reportedly tried to buy a Greyhound Bus ticket, so the search shifted there. But still, no sign of ganter. She wanted to go to mississippi because thats where were from. She is she was asking yesterday about her daughter to see she wanted to see her mom and dad, which both are deceased now. Shes a sporty woman. She is very classy. I called her diva. Thats how she remembers who i am. Reporter gladys ganter has her purse and id, some cash, not enough to get her to mississippi, and no cell phone. Im told she has taken off before, but her family managed to find her within an hour. This time, she is wearing just a sweater and a fleece jacket, certainly not bundled up for the cold, especially with the rain moving in. Certainly the weather is going to impact the search there. Deb, thank you. Firefighters in san jose are trying to figure out what sparked a threealarm fire this afternoon. Three people were inside the home on south ten street when the fire broke out around 12 15. Two were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Another person was treated at the scene. Officials say the fire appears to have started in the back of the house. One firefighter fell through a staircase while battling the flames, but was not injured. Authorities are looking for answers tonight after a body was found in marin county. A park Spokesman Says the body of a man believed to be in his sixties was discovered at Point Reyes National sea shore around 11 30 this morning. It may be that of a hiker reported missing by his family yesterday. About 80 people from various bay area search and rescue agencies have been searching for that man. The body was taken to the marin county Coroners Office for identification. It has been a busy day at bay area airports, as travelers returned home from the holiday break. This is what it looked like this morning at sfo terminal 2. Poor weather conditions caused some delays this morning, but they were all over by this afternoon. One traveler headed to the airport before daybreak to try to beat the rush. There was no traffic. It was excellent, really, because i was early in the morning. By 4 00 in the afternoon, probably been a different story. Sfo duty managers tell ktvu they estimate 68,000 arriving passengers and roughly the same number of departing passengers will pass through that airport today alone. Thats considered fairly heavy volume. The largest container ship ever to visit the United States is getting ready to leave the bay area. The cma Benjamin Franklin will depart from the port of oakland tomorrow afternoon for asia. The ship arrived in the bay area thursday morning. Its 20 stories tall, 1300 feet long, longer than a superaircraft carrier. It can also carry 18,000 shipping containers. The port of oakland is one of the few u. S. Ports that can handle a vessel this large. Gilroy police are asking for the publics help tonight finding a suspected purse thief. Authorities say this woman seen here on Surveillance Video stole four purses from the Michael Kors Outlet store in gilroy. They say the four purses cost more than 1100. Anyone with information is asked to call gilroy police. We have developing news were following right now. Its happening in san rafael, where the Police Station has been evacuated because of a suspicious device, possibly grenade. Authorities are telling ktvu that the Marin County Sheriffs Office is taking over the 911 dispatch system while police investigate. The church at antioch started accepting donations for this giveaway during the fall and names started pouring in, but one letter stood out above all the others. Every animal has been medically screened, vaccinated, micro chipped and spayed or neutered. We checked and 259 animals found new loving homes this year. The agency says donations are on track to match last years total of 90,000. With the holidays now behind us, all thats left is the cleanup. Recology is picking up Christmas Trees in a curbside pickup. Reporter hundreds of thousands of Christmas Trees gathered from all around San Francisco will make their way here to recologys recycling center. Its a great tradition in San Francisco. Put your tree out so it can be recycled. Reporter San Francisco residents can put their trees curbside from now until mid january for crews to collect. The city encourages everyone to put their Christmas Tree out with their recycling. Well pick it up on your regular collection day. Reporter those trees are gathered up, brought inside the 44acre facility, hoisted and eventually dropped into a giant grinder. Trees go into one side, chips the size of toothpicks come out the other. Because the trees are so full of pine tar, they are not destined for compost. Were grinding up these trees to use as mulch in city parks to help suppress weeds around picnic areas, on pathways. Reporter the same acidic sap that works so well as a weed preventer also makes the groundup trees a great source of energy. In biomass facilities, you can take this resource and turn it into energy. You can actually turn it into electricity to heat your home, to turn lights on, to power your computer. Reporter experts say they understand there are a few stragglers out there. Saudi arabia will face, quote, unquote, divine revenge for the execution and compared the sunniled country to isis. U. S. Officials have been calling for restraint, but keep in mind that both countries have had a very Divisive Political history. They are on opposite sides of the fighting in iraq, syria and yemen. Whether or not this is just tough talk from saudi arabia is unclear. What is clear is things have taken a very dangerous political turn. Protesters in oregon are on day two of their occupation of a government building. The group has taken over a Federal Building at a National Wildlife refuge in support of ranchers facing prison time for setting fires on federal land. Prosecutors say the fires were set to hide poaching, but two men say it was try to stop invasive plants. The protest took an unusual turn in bundy joined in. It is the peoples facility, owned by the people, and it has been provided for us to be able to come together and unite and making a hard stand against this overreach, this taking of the peoples land and resources. The hammonds say they didnt ask for the bundys help and dont want it. Both hammonds are set to report to federal prison in san pedro tomorrow. President obama and his family are back from hawaii following holiday vacation. One of his first steps is possible executive action on gun control. President obama will meet with attorney general Loretta Lynch tomorrow to discuss what options he has to enact Gun Control Reforms through executive orders. Specifically, the white house is looking at stricter requirements for small scale gun sellers and background checks. The president again defended his use of executive powers in his weekly address by blaming inaction from congress. We know we cant stop every act of violence, but what if we tried to stop even one . What if congress did something, anything, to protect our kids from gun violence . Reporter the white house says the president will even be hitting the campaign trail again to build support for his bucket list, starting with a town hall meeting on gun control this thursday. Another glaring item on the president s todo list is closing the Detention Center on guantanamo bay. Its something hes vowed to do since he came into office seven years ago. Theres been plenty of resistance in congress, but the white house says its waiting on a final plan for closing the center from the pentagon and will present that plan to congress before considering additional executive action on that issue. Speaking of congress, starting this week, well start to see some of the bold agenda new House Speaker paul ryan promised when he took over. Right out of the gate, Congressional Republicans will be sending a bill to president obama that repeals major parts of the Affordable Care act and defunds planned parenthood. The president said hell veto the bill, so republicans scheduled a veto override vote for january 22. The San Bernardino offices where terrorists killed 14 people last month will reopen tomorrow. 600 employees are expected to return to work at the inland regional center. The facility has been closed since december 2, after syed farook and Tashfeen Malik went on a shooting rampage. While two buildings on the campus will reopen today, the Conference Center where the shooting happened will remain closed indefinitely. Counselors will be on hand and there will also be more security. You can pick out all the coverage, but changes within the past hour. Youll see more coverage in terms of rain showers just offshore. Here you go with the clouds and the rain approaching the Santa Cruz County coastline, also parts of the San Mateo County coastline as well, a bit closer to Half Moon Bay at last check, working up to the north. Im sure this will fill in a bit over the next hour or so with rain chances on the increase. Now, whenever i break out the calendar, it gives us an idea well have an extended period of something. That something will be rain. You can see a pretty active week coming up. Not only this week, but also into next week as well. Well be measuring rainfall in terms of inches. So tonight, we have the first storm system. Second one on the approach for tomorrow, as you can see, with gusty winds into monday, periods of rain. The timing with the heaviest rain, and we are expecting heavy rain, that moves in monday evening into early tuesday morning. Definitely a snowproducer up in the sierra. Winter storm watch begins monday afternoon. Snowfall could be on the order of 10 to 20 inches. Heres our forecast model for tonight. Rain showers on the increase, primarily for the western half of the bay area into early monday morning. You will see scattered rain showers for the monday morning commute. More breaks in the activity later in the day monday, but then by 5 00, we have a band of rain pushing onshore. Look what happens. This will be the heavy rain monday night and into tuesday morning.
