Ive noticed a pattern. And this is whats been happening. It could be a coincidence. Lets go to the macarthur maze and start there. People have been trying to get into the city early. And theres been a big rush at this time. And look at all the slow traffic around the macarthur maze. In the last few days weve noticed that 8 30 or 8 45 the bay bridge is empty. People get in early because they are afraid of all the traffic if they have to go to the city and drive around. Not a bad idea. And now the idea has caught on. More people are taking the ferry into the city as we take a live look at northbound 101. And its been light so far. More people are taking the ferry. 6000 more People Per Day on bart according to bart officials and thats just the change after the whole super bowl city, embarcadero closure, and the financial district has been rough the last few days. Lets talk about the peninsula. Traffic is looking good if youre driving from the airport to the south bay. Santa clara valley. It looks good. Your commute is off to a nice start. And no major problems. 6 03 and lets go back to the desk. We begin with a developing story. A shootout between an oregon militia and the fbi. A story weve been following. And now the leader of the Militia Group and some of his top supporters are in custody. Allie rasmus is follow thanksgiving from the newsroom. New information on the arrest and the federal charges that they now face. Reporter thats right, pam. One person was killed and one injured and a total of eight people arrested following a shootout on oregons highway 395. Well show you the booking photos. On the left is ammon bundy and his brother pictured alongside of the other members. The group calls itself citizens for constitutional freedom. Theyve occupied the wildlife refuge for the last month. They face federal conspiracy chargings for impeding officers of the United States through the use of force, intimidation, or threats. The hospital in the town of burns was placed on lockdown out of concern that other members of the militia may cause a disturbance after the injured militia member was brought to the hospital. Yesterday around 4 30 in the afternoon, the members were arrested along the highway. They had driven outside of the refuge to meet with a community in a nearby town. They never arrived and were stopped and arrested on the way there. Pictures on social media show Law Enforcement officers and vehicles parked on the roadway. During the course of the arrest, shots were fired and thats apparently when one of the members of the group were killed. There are reports that the man killed was lavoy finicum, a spokesman for the group. The bundys and others have been camped out since the beginning of the month. And they were upset they claim because they say that the federal government has illegally taken away land from private ranchers over the past several decades. And they said they would not leave until the land was turned over to local control. The standoff is not over. The fbi is supposed to have a press conference to talk about the shooting and the arrest and the circumstances surrounding it. Thats set to happen at 7 30 our time. And well be monitoring that for the latest information. Thank you for the update. Its confirmed that a body found on a beach near santa cruz was that of a missing College Student who was swept into the ocean by a wave. 19yearold Shireen Ahsan of palo alto was swept away by a big wave at bonny doon beach. The body was found 5 miles away from where she was swept away. The other individual is still listed as missing. Two base jumpers are believed to have died after they parachuted off a bridge near big sur. We have video from a monterey tv station. The woman and the man jumped from the bixby bridge last wednesday. And it took us to determine they were missing. Video from a helmet cam has been recovered and they are not making that public. That video shows the woman parachuting and landing in the surf below. The man goes in after her, lands on the beach, and apparently tried to rescue her. Authorities now believe both were washed out to sea. An 85yearold woman hit by a suspected drunk driver in santa rosa has died. Jackie simon was walking with a friend on the sidewalk in the oakmont village retirement community. And 77yearold gail gray hit the two women. Gray was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and faces vehicular manslaughter charges and the other woman suffered nonlife threatening injuries. A taxi driver is accused of driving with a toddler in the backseat and being under the influence. Is it toddler was not in a car seat and was strapped in a seat belt that ended up around his neck. The boy was taken to Child Protective Services and the driver was booked for driving under the influence and felony child endangerment. Two recent tour bus crashes in San Francisco. A tour bus hit and killed an 82 yearold man on january 16th near japantown. The driver was cited for misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. And last november a runaway tour bus injured 20 people. Norman ye wants agencies including the mta, the police, and the Highway Patrol to present some solutions to increase tour bus safety. New this morning, hundreds of Sonoma County workers are expected to rally for higher wages. The Sonoma County leaders are gathering at the double tree for an annual report on the state of the county. The union says workers salaries have stalled and they want county supervisors to hear their concerns and bargain a fair contract. They also say automatic pay increases and benefits for supervisors are four times higher than the average worker in sonoma. Apple is expanding into the bay areas largest city. The San Jose City council has approved a plan to let the tech giant build another new campus near the airport. This is big. Janine de la vega is in san jose now and this paves the way for thousands of workers to head to san jose, good morning, janine. Initially were hearing that a thousand employees would move into existing buildings on the new campus site. But looking long term, this could be jobs for 16 to 20,000 employees. Lets go to a map of what this new apple campus where its going to be located. North of highway 101 near the 87 interchange along orchard parkway. Its an Industrial Area with some office complexes. For the most part. Theres a lot of vacant land. Apple could build 4 million square feet of office space. And they can expand for the next 15 years. The size of it could exceed the apple spaceship in cupertino. Officials would love for apple to move the headquarters, but thats not the plan. Its a research and development facility. Tim cook expects a slower pace of growth for the company and lower iphone sales. Analysts are watching with interest. Apple is going to continue to be a huge, profitable, important company, but theres a lot of questions about what they can do next to continue the kind of growth theyve enjoyed. City leaders are excited about having apple move in. It means millions of dollars. Theyve been working on attracting Tech Companies in North San Jose and theyve been pretty successful. The bay area is calling for plans for better advising. There are new efforts to bring music programs back in the bay area schools and that means finding more music teacher. They are looking for students who want to make a career of teaching music. Local educators say music should be a part of every childs classroom experience. When were teaching were actually asking the people we interact with to open themselves up to the possibility of all that music can be. Cal state is considering creating a pipeline with bay area high schools to get students interested in music to consider a career as a teacher. Fascinating. The bay bridge and getting to it has been slow. But i want to mention something. Theres a truck accident on eastbound 80. And highway 4 is slow through the pittsburg and bay point. Yesterday 580 was a mess. It was terrible all morning long. This morning its better. We havent seen the backups yet. 680 is slow out of pleasanton. I mentioned the bay bridge and the camera is kind of funky right now. But its backed up to the macarthur maze. 6 19 and lets go to steve. May i add something from a friend of mine who takes 580, 680. The backup is not the sunol grade its back to the 580, 680 split. Its a mess from the stone ridge mall all the way to bernal road. Its terrible. Thats what he says. And if youre leaving Half Moon Bay, do not use highway 92. Its west of skyline and blocking both directions. Getting from 280 to Half Moon Bay or the other way around is a no go. Chp has not arrived yet. San mateo county sheriff is on the scene. And this is bad news for you if you live on the coast and want to get to 280. I would say use highway 1 through pacifica. And if youre a pacifica driver, more of your friends will be joining you on the commute up to and the daly city route or woodside. 92 is not passable. Youll just get caught in a bunch of slow traffic. Its blocking both directions off highway 92. A big mess in san mateo county. I want to go to highway 4 which is normal and 160, the antioch bridge is blocked by a stalled big rig. Northbound 160 is completely blocked and southbound is a mess as well. So if you use that bridge youll be in a bunch of slow traffic. Lets go to the san mateo bridge and that traffic is okay getting to the peninsula if youre heading south to palo alto. Its moderate or north into San Francisco. Getting to San Francisco from oakland right now is a big mess coming around the bay bridge toll plaza. Its jam packed. San francisco has been a mess downtown because of super bowl city closures, and its going to be that way. A lot of people are trying to get into the city early. Its not an original area. 6 34. And back to the desk. The Berkeley Police department is about to change the way it handles public protests. This is all in response to the way the 2014 black lives matter protest really got out of hand. Alex savidge has been following this with the recommendations that will be put in place. Alex reporter good morning to you guys. The Police Review commission in berkeley took a close look at the demonstration two years ago. And they came up with ways that officers could have better handled the large crowd that was on hand. And last night the Berkeley City Council adopted the commissions report. [yelling] and this was protest in question that prompted this review in the first play. You may remember on december 6th of 2014 people demonstrated against Police Killings of unarmed black men nationwide. And the situation quickly turned chaotic. And stores were looted and officers clashed with protesters, and eventually, police disbussed tear gas. The commission is recommending improved crowd control and the use of less than lethal weapons as well. But the police chief here in berkeley disagrees with some of the recommendations, especially one that discourages the use of helicopters to try to figure out which way a crowd is moving. Those who have been pushing for Police Accountability in this situation believe these are simply common sense recommendations that are going to be adopted by the Berkeley Police department and some critics dont believe the recommendations really go far enough to make the changes necessary in the city. Youll have an ongoing debate as the City Council Adopts the changes. 6 36 is the time. The San Francisco board of supervisors voted in favor of making july 22nd mario woods Remembrance Day despite objections from Police Officers. Board approved the proposal in a unanimous vote yesterday. Supervisor david campos is meant to honor woods and serve as a symbol of police reform. Woods mother said it was an emotional moment. I have to live my life without him and all the hopes i had for him and all my dreams. Yeah, they can, they can have a day for my baby. Reporter police say woods had just stabbed someone and refused to drop his knife when he was fatally shot by officers. The president of the Police Officers association criticized the supervisors decision saying woods was to sigh on drugs that nonlethal weapons had no effect on him. And having a Remembrance Day for an excon is offensive to officers who have died in the line of duty and never had a day. A woman is accused of drowning her 12yearold son in a bathtub this month. She found her son partially floating face up in the tub. Paramedics rushed the child to the hospital and he was pronounced dead two hours later. At first according to police she claimed the drowning was an accident. And later she confessed to it. She is due in court february 1st. A family in the north bay considers themselves luckily after a hoverboard fire damaged but did not destroy their home. A hoverboard was charging in a bed room and petaluma. Her father heard a hissing sound and in the smoke he dodged flaming projectiles. This whole area lit up wright orange. And the light was coming from my daughters room around the corner. Parts of this machine were ricocheting off the walls and doors and applying right past me here. Someone from the Consumer ProductsSafety Commission is expected to come out today to look at the hoverboard and inspect the damage. Today jackie spear and pacifica officials will be talking about how to keel with the problems of the crumbling cliffsides. The hillside over the ocean is crumbling. Apartment buildings are teetering feet away from the edge of the cliff. And now that there are yellow tags on the building at 310 esplanade, the people who live there can only go inside to pack up their things. Many get Government Housing assistance and have had problems getting the county to give them the paperwork so they can start looking for a new place to live. Even if the Housing Authority comes down and gives me the paperwork, im starting the apartment hunt and search all over again with no resources or any sort of help. And theres a lot of people getting Israeli Soldiers placed and becoming homeless. Others are going to defy the yellow tags and continue to stay interest. At least one person is filing a court appeal of the evacuation order. Time is 6 40 and theres a plan to install new lighting at a high school stadium. And coming in 20 minutes, it could help athletes, but neighbors dont want it. And the south side of delores park is reopening after the renovation. Very interesting. Some West VirginiaNational Guardsmen are being called heroes after rescuing a man in weve over the weekend. He needed dialysis. The picture of the rescue has picked up 10s of thousands of shares on facebook. Look at the amount of snow they are walking through. After the soldiers helped him down the snowy slope, they waited until the dialysis was complete to bring him back home. And the National Guard wrote this is what its all about. It is. A photo from a tennessee chickfila restaurant is getting attention today. A father took his daughter for the usual lunch at chickfila and caught this moment. A homeless man came in the restaurant and wanted some leftover food. The store manager offered him a hot meal. And he had one requirement. He just wanted to pray with him. We have a problem on highway 92 between upper sky line and 280. Theres a problem with the commute because of a crash. At first we thought office a jackknifed truck. And apparently its just a regular crash. And also moving up to the east bay. Theres a crash blocking three lanes involving a big rig. Westbound traffic is also affected in the area. And if you are driving this morning out to some of the roads, well get live pictures for you. Bay bridge, big backup at the toll plaza. Its been an early pattern since the super bowl city closures. And were looking at san jose, northbound 280 getting a little bit slow coming around the corner up to highway 17. 6 38 and lets go to steve. Can we talk about delores park in San Francisco again and that big renovation. Lets go back to brian flores who is out there. And the neighborhood is excited about the huge reopening. You can see the gates around the park. Later on this afternoon, those will come down and theres going to be a Celebration Party and delores park will fully reopen. The grand reopening was supposed to happen two weeks ago. But because of the recent el nino storms, it was pushed back. The renovation includes new grasses, new benches, and bathrooms tucked underneath aillside. And an off leash dog park. Many locals anticipating the big opening. The public is invited to a lightup the new delores park ceremony. People are encouraged to bring flashlights or awayer glow in the dark clothing or l. E. D. Accessories. The one thing people are not federal judged to bring are glow sticks because they installed the grass, and if the glow sticks leak, thats going to kill the grass.
