A couple of earlier wrecks. Nothing major but traffic will be slow. Is also slow on 680. 680 looks good from danville down to san ramon. In san jose, northbound 280 looks good. It is light so far in the south bay. The wildfire burning south of carmel in Monterey County has grown to more than 16,000 acres. Firefight is far from over. Janine de la vega is live from the firefighters race camp in salinas with an update. Reporter crews are just starting to arrive. In about an hour they will be meeting to discuss how to attack this fire today. There is a marine layer right now here in celina. You cant see the smoke that it is there. We are about 45 minutes from the fire. We were told by cal fire that ash was falling here yesterday. What is going to make a huge difference is being able to fly aircrafts so water can be dumped on the soberanes fire. The helicopters and air tankers were grounded yesterday because of low visibility. Ground crews cleared brush and late hose and worked on making containment lines so the buyer would not spread. The latest update we have here is that the fire is only 10 contained. It has been burning since friday in an area near garrapata state park, south of carmel. There are 1400 firefighters working to get this under control. 1000 more are on the way. A big challenge here is the low humidity and the heat. With this fire, five years of drought like we talked about, the bark beetle and the infestation, all of the mortality of the trees and of course the brush you need to understand that there is a lot of fuel out there. Reporter people who live in the affected area packed the meeting held by cal fire last night. They are concerned about their homes. So far, 20 have been destroyed and more than 1600 are threatened. Some wanted to know when they could go back. Containment could take at least a week. A temporary red cross shelter is at carmel middle school. There could be more evacuation orders today. It depends on the weather. We should be able to learn more at this briefing that starts at 7 am. They will update us on how many more acres this has spread and if theres any more containment. The last update we got was as of last night. There is good news to report from the fire lines in los angeles county. Most of the people forced to evacuate due to the fire burning in the Santa Clarita valley have been allowed to return. The battle against the sand fire is far from over. It is 10 contained. Firefighters are working to keep flames away from hundreds of threatened homes. The sand fire has burned more than 35,000 acres and has destroyed 18 homes since it started on friday. Isis has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack at a church in northern france. Two men armed with nice enter the church during mass and stabbed to death and 84year old priest and took a four hostages. Two nuns and two worshipers. One of the hostages was injured in the assault. French police shot and killed the attackers. Isis is calling them to other soldiers. Muslim leaders say one of the men had gone to turkey and was known to french security. We are at the skillman street on ramp, eastbound, excuse me, westbound interstate 80 going with the flow of traffic. Were talking about these changes youll notice if you drive this particular stretch of freeway. You will see changes. Let me show you one of the big changes you will notice. These new metering light that have been put in at all the entrances, all the on ramps between the carquinez bridge and the bay bridge. About a 20 mile stretch. They have put in these metering light. He will notice they turned on this morning at 5 am. This is part of the smart highway project. We will show you video we shot last week. They did a test run on all of this. The lights were turned on for the first time last week. Today is the real deal. They are on for good now. Along with metering lights some of what you will also notice is electronic signs about the freeway that can adjust the speed limit based on the current traffic conditions. There are also signs ahead that can alert drivers to a close lane so drivers have some awareness and they know ahead of time about closed lanes and they can get over. We spoke to commuters this morning. They are hoping these changes will make a difference. Im glad. Its good. I dont know what to say but im open to it. Im glad. Something needs to be done. I dont know if thats it but will see. We will see. Reporter these changes are part of a 79 million overhaul of this part of the interstate 80 corridor. This is between the carquinez bridge and the bay bridge area. This is called the smart corridor project. Two teenage boys arrested in connection with the fire in millbrae last week that destroyed the community center. This started last thursday morning. Investigators say tips from the public and social media led them to the arrest of a 16 and 17yearold suspect. Both from millbrae. County fire Officials Say the boys admitted lying with fire in the park but say they did not need to set the building on fire. Right now there is information that suggests this incident was due to negligence. It was not intentional. The teenagers are now facing arson charges and are in a juvenile detention center. Millbrae city officials will meet next week to talk about rebuilding the community center. Struck the Oakland Police sergeant shot at last saturday night is out of the hospital this morning. She was a on patrol when she was involved in a car crash with another vehicle. That crash sent her suv onto the sidewalk. That is when someone approached her and started shooting at her. I just got shot at. I cant get out of the car she used her police radio to call for help. The sergeant was not hit by the gunfire. She was taken to Highland Hospital and treated for injuries from the crash. We have an individual who walked up to that car unprovoked , very intentional, and fired a round into a marked police car with an officer in full uniform inside that car. The sergeant was able to provide a description of the shooter who is not been caught. Investigators are looking for a motive. Struck hundreds of clarkson Santa Clara County are threatened to go on strike next month. The clerks for the county superior court system say they have gone for years without a raise and a threatening to walk off the job. Experienced clerks make about 55,000 per year, expressed clerks. Northbound 280 is on the right. You can see cars heading away from us and up toward cupertino. We are heating up. Temperatures inland will go well above the 90s, perhaps 100 degrees are so. The hottest spots may see 102. I will show you that in the afternoon highs in a moment. The oakland estuary. Many folks will be close to the water today because that is where we will be comfortable. 70s and 80s for our bayside communities. At the coast, cloudy and cool, mid60s for Half Moon Bay in pacifica. You can see that monsoonal moisture bubbling up around there. Southern california could see some of that. What that will do is turn off our sea breeze. Not completely but it will be very light. At the coast and just inside the bay. Inland communities will not get any relief as we get into the next few days. A northerly flow there. It will also cut off the southerly flow. For folks to the north of the fire, over monterey, you will see smoke and hayes again today. For the bay area it should not be is widespread.
